अपराधी मतिहीनु निरगुनु अनाथु नीचु ॥
I am a sinner, devoid of wisdom, worthless, destitute and vile.
ਸਠ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਕੁਲਹੀਨੁ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਮੋਹ ਕੀਚੁ ॥

सठ कठोरु कुलहीनु बिआपत मोह कीचु ॥
I am deceitful, hard-hearted, lowly and entangled in the mud of emotional attachment.
ਮਲ ਭਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਅਹੰ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥
Mal Bharam Karam Ahan Mamathaa Maran Cheeth N Aaveae ||
मल भरम करम अहं ममता मरणु चीति न आवए ॥
I am stuck in the filth of doubt and egotistical actions, and I try not to think of death.
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਲਪਟਾਵਏ ॥
Banithaa Binodh Anandh Maaeiaa Agiaanathaa Lapattaaveae ||
बनिता बिनोद अनंद माइआ अगिआनता लपटावए ॥
In ignorance, I cling to the pleasures of woman and the joys of Maya.
ਖਿਸੈ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਬਧੈ ਜਰੂਆ ਦਿਨ ਨਿਹਾਰੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੀਚੁ ॥
Khisai Joban Badhhai Jarooaa Dhin Nihaarae Sang Meech ||
खिसै जोबनु बधै जरूआ दिन निहारे संगि मीचु ॥
My youth is wasting away, old age is approaching, and Death, my companion, is counting my days.
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਰਾਖੁ ਨੀਚੁ ॥੨॥

बिनवंति नानक आस तेरी सरणि साधू राखु नीचु ॥२॥
Prays Nanak, my hope is in You, Lord; please preserve me, the lowly one, in the Sanctuary of the Holy. ||2||
ਭਰਮੇ ਜਨਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਸੰਕਟ ਮਹਾ ਜੋਨ ॥

भरमे जनम अनेक संकट महा जोन ॥
I have wandered through countless incarnations, suffering terrible pain in these lives.
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੀਠੇ ਭੋਗ ਸੋਨ ॥
Lapatt Rehiou Thih Sang Meethae Bhog Son ||
लपटि रहिओ तिह संगि मीठे भोग सोन ॥
I am entangled in sweet pleasures and gold.
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਭਾਰ ਅਗਨਤ ਆਇਓ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸਹ ਧਾਇਓ ॥
Bhramath Bhaar Aganath Aaeiou Bahu Pradhaeseh Dhhaaeiou ||
भ्रमत भार अगनत आइओ बहु प्रदेसह धाइओ ॥
After wandering around with such great loads of sin, I have come, after wandering through so many foreign lands.
ਅਬ ਓਟ ਧਾਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇਓ ॥
Ab Outt Dhhaaree Prabh Muraaree Sarab Sukh Har Naaeiou ||
अब ओट धारी प्रभ मुरारी सरब सुख हरि नाइओ ॥
Now, I have taken the protection of God, and I have found total peace in the Name of the Lord.
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਹੋਨ ॥
Raakhanehaarae Prabh Piaarae Mujh Thae Kashhoo N Hoaa Hon ||
राखनहारे प्रभ पिआरे मुझ ते कछू न होआ होन ॥
God, my Beloved, is my protector; nothing was done, or will ever be done, by myself alone.
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਰੈ ਭਉਨ ॥੩॥

सूख सहज आनंद नानक क्रिपा तेरी तरै भउन ॥३॥
I have found peace, poise and bliss, O Nanak; by Your mercy, I swim across the world-ocean. ||3||
ਨਾਮ ਧਾਰੀਕ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਭਗਤਹ ਸੰਸਾ ਕਉਨ ॥
Naam Dhhaareek Oudhhaarae Bhagatheh Sansaa Koun ||
नाम धारीक उधारे भगतह संसा कउन ॥
You saved those who only pretended to believe, so what doubts should Your true devotees have?
ਜੇਨ ਕੇਨ ਪਰਕਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ॥
Jaen Kaen Parakaarae Har Har Jas Sunahu Sravan ||
जेन केन परकारे हरि हरि जसु सुनहु स्रवन ॥
By every means possible, listen to the Praises of the Lord with your ears.
ਸੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਬਾਨੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ਪਾਵਹੇ ॥
Sun Sravan Baanee Purakh Giaanee Man Nidhhaanaa Paavehae ||
सुनि स्रवन बानी पुरख गिआनी मनि निधाना पावहे ॥
Listen with your ears to the Word of the Lord's Bani, the hymns of spiritual wisdom; thus you shall obtain the treasure in your mind.
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਧਾਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੇ ॥
Har Rang Raathae Prabh Bidhhaathae Raam Kae Gun Gaavehae ||
हरि रंगि राते प्रभ बिधाते राम के गुण गावहे ॥
Attuned to the Love of the Lord God, the Architect of Destiny, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਬਸੁਧ ਕਾਗਦ ਬਨਰਾਜ ਕਲਮਾ ਲਿਖਣ ਕਉ ਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਪਵਨ ॥
Basudhh Kaagadh Banaraaj Kalamaa Likhan Ko Jae Hoe Pavan ||
बसुध कागद बनराज कलमा लिखण कउ जे होइ पवन ॥
The earth is the paper, the forest is the pen and the wind is the writer,
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਇਆ ਗਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਣ ਸਰਨ ॥੪॥੫॥੮॥
Baeanth Anth N Jaae Paaeiaa Gehee Naanak Charan Saran ||4||5||8||
बेअंत अंतु न जाइ पाइआ गही नानक चरण सरन ॥४॥५॥८॥
But still, the end of the endless Lord cannot be found. O Nanak, I have taken to the Sanctuary of His lotus feet. ||4||5||8||

पुरख पते भगवान ता की सरणि गही ॥
The Primal Lord is the Lord God of all beings. I have taken to His Sanctuary.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭਏ ਪਰਾਨ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਗਲ ਲਹੀ ॥
Nirabho Bheae Paraan Chinthaa Sagal Lehee ||
निरभउ भए परान चिंता सगल लही ॥
My life has become fearless, and all my anxieties have been removed.
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਸੁਰਿਜਨ ਇਸਟ ਬੰਧਪ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
Maath Pithaa Suth Meeth Surijan Eisatt Bandhhap Jaaniaa ||
मात पिता सुत मीत सुरिजन इसट बंधप जाणिआ ॥
I know the Lord as my mother, father, son, friend, well-wisher and close relative.
ਗਹਿ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਜਸੁ ਬਿਮਲ ਸੰਤ ਵਖਾਣਿਆ ॥
Gehi Kanth Laaeiaa Gur Milaaeiaa Jas Bimal Santh Vakhaaniaa ||
गहि कंठि लाइआ गुरि मिलाइआ जसु बिमल संत वखाणिआ ॥
The Guru has led me to embrace Him; the Saints chant His Pure Praises.
ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਕਹੀ ॥
Baeanth Gun Anaek Mehimaa Keemath Kashhoo N Jaae Kehee ||
बेअंत गुण अनेक महिमा कीमति कछू न जाइ कही ॥
His Glorious Virtues are infinite, and His greatness is unlimited. His value cannot be described at all.

The world is a pool of nectar, when the Lord becomes our helper.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਹਾਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਕੇ ਦਿਵਸ ਗਏ ॥

राम नामु उर हारु बिखु के दिवस गए ॥
One who wears the necklace of the Lord's Name - his days of suffering are ended.
ਗਤੁ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਜੋਨਿ ਆਵਣ ਸਭ ਰਹੇ ॥
Gath Bharam Moh Bikaar Binasae Jon Aavan Sabh Rehae ||
गतु भरम मोह बिकार बिनसे जोनि आवण सभ रहे ॥
His state of doubt, attachment and sin is erased, and the cycle of reincarnation into the womb is totally ended.
ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਏ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਾਧ ਅੰਚਲ ਗਹਿ ਰਹੇ ॥
Agan Saagar Bheae Seethal Saadhh Anchal Gehi Rehae ||
अगनि सागर भए सीतल साध अंचल गहि रहे ॥
The ocean of fire becomes cool, when one grasps the hem of the robe of the Holy Saint.
ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਰਿ ਜੈ ਜਏ ॥
Govindh Gupaal Dhaeiaal Sanmrithh Bol Saadhhoo Har Jai Jeae ||
गोविंद गुपाल दइआल सम्रिथ बोलि साधू हरि जै जए ॥
The Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of the World, the merciful all-powerful Lord - the Holy Saints proclaim the victory of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥੨॥
Naanak Naam Dhhiaae Pooran Saadhhasang Paaee Param Gathae ||2||
नानक नामु धिआइ पूरन साधसंगि पाई परम गते ॥२॥
O Nanak, meditating on the Naam, in the perfect Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I have obtained the supreme status. ||2||
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥
Jeh Dhaekho Theh Sang Eaeko Rav Rehiaa ||
जह देखउ तह संगि एको रवि रहिआ ॥
Wherever I look, there I find the One Lord permeating and pervading all.
ਘਟ ਘਟ ਵਾਸੀ ਆਪਿ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਲਹਿਆ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Vaasee Aap Viralai Kinai Lehiaa ||
घट घट वासी आपि विरलै किनै लहिआ ॥
In each and every heart, He Himself dwells, but how rare is that person who realizes this.
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
Jal Thhal Meheeal Poor Pooran Keett Hasath Samaaniaa ||
जलि थलि महीअलि पूरि पूरन कीट हसति समानिआ ॥
The Lord is permeating and pervading the water, the land and the sky; He is contained in the ant and the elephant.
ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਮਧਿ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
Aadh Anthae Madhh Soee Gur Prasaadhee Jaaniaa ||
आदि अंते मधि सोई गुर प्रसादी जानिआ ॥
In the beginning, in the middle and in the end, He exists. By Guru's Grace, He is known.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲੀਲਾ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ॥
Breham Pasariaa Breham Leelaa Govindh Gun Nidhh Jan Kehiaa ||
ब्रहमु पसरिआ ब्रहम लीला गोविंद गुण निधि जनि कहिआ ॥
God created the expanse of the universe, God created the play of the world. His humble servants call Him the Lord of the Universe, the treasure of virtue.

सिमरि सुआमी अंतरजामी हरि एकु नानक रवि रहिआ ॥३॥
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord Master, the Searcher of hearts; O Nanak, He is the One, pervading and permeating all. ||3||
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੜੀ ਆਈ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰੇ ॥
Dhin Rain Suhaavarree Aaee Simarath Naam Harae ||
दिनु रैणि सुहावड़ी आई सिमरत नामु हरे ॥
Day and night, become beauteous by remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
