ਉਜਲੁ ਕੈਹਾ ਚਿਲਕਣਾ ਘੋਟਿਮ ਕਾਲੜੀ ਮਸੁ ॥
Oujal Kaihaa Chilakanaa Ghottim Kaalarree Mas ||
उजलु कैहा चिलकणा घोटिम कालड़ी मसु ॥
Bronze is bright and shiny, but when it is rubbed, its blackness appears.
ਧੋਤਿਆ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਾ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੧॥
Dhhothiaa Jooth N Outharai Jae So Dhhovaa This ||1||
धोतिआ जूठि न उतरै जे सउ धोवा तिसु ॥१॥
Washing it, its impurity is not removed, even if it is washed a hundred times. ||1||
ਸਜਣ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੈ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Sajan Saeee Naal Mai Chaladhiaa Naal Chalannih ||
सजण सेई नालि मै चलदिआ नालि चलंन्हि ॥
They alone are my friends, who travel along with me;
ਜਿਥੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਖੜੇ ਦਿਸੰਨਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jithhai Laekhaa Mangeeai Thithhai Kharrae Dhisann ||1|| Rehaao ||
जिथै लेखा मंगीऐ तिथै खड़े दिसंनि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
And in that place, where the accounts are called for, they appear standing with me. ||1||Pause||
ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਚਿਤਵੀਆਹਾ ॥
Kothae Manddap Maarreeaa Paasahu Chithaveeaahaa ||
कोठे मंडप माड़ीआ पासहु चितवीआहा ॥
There are houses, mansions and tall buildings, painted on all sides;
ਢਠੀਆ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਖਣੀਆਹਾ ॥੨॥
Dtatheeaa Kanm N Aavanhee Vichahu Sakhaneeaahaa ||2||
ढठीआ कमि न आवन्ही विचहु सखणीआहा ॥२॥
But they are empty within, and they crumble like useless ruins. ||2||
ਬਗਾ ਬਗੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਵਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Bagaa Bagae Kaparrae Theerathh Manjh Vasannih ||
बगा बगे कपड़े तीरथ मंझि वसंन्हि ॥
The herons in their white feathers dwell in the sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਘੁਟਿ ਘੁਟਿ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਵਣੇ ਬਗੇ ਨਾ ਕਹੀਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੩॥
Ghutt Ghutt Jeeaa Khaavanae Bagae Naa Keheeanih ||3||
घुटि घुटि जीआ खावणे बगे ना कहीअन्हि ॥३॥
They tear apart and eat the living beings, and so they are not called white. ||3||
ਸਿੰਮਲ ਰੁਖੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਮੈ ਮੈਜਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੁਲੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Sinmal Rukh Sareer Mai Maijan Dhaekh Bhulannih ||
सिमल रुखु सरीरु मै मैजन देखि भुलंन्हि ॥
My body is like the simmal tree; seeing me, other people are fooled.
ਸੇ ਫਲ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੪॥
Sae Fal Kanm N Aavanhee Thae Gun Mai Than Hannih ||4||
से फल कमि न आवन्ही ते गुण मै तनि हंन्हि ॥४॥
Its fruits are useless - just like the qualities of my body. ||4||
ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਇਆ ਡੂਗਰ ਵਾਟ ਬਹੁਤੁ ॥
Andhhulai Bhaar Outhaaeiaa Ddoogar Vaatt Bahuth ||
अंधुलै भारु उठाइआ डूगर वाट बहुतु ॥
The blind man is carrying such a heavy load, and his journey through the mountains is so long.
ਅਖੀ ਲੋੜੀ ਨਾ ਲਹਾ ਹਉ ਚੜਿ ਲੰਘਾ ਕਿਤੁ ॥੫॥
Akhee Lorree Naa Lehaa Ho Charr Langhaa Kith ||5||
अखी लोड़ी ना लहा हउ चड़ि लंघा कितु ॥५॥
My eyes can see, but I cannot find the Way. How can I climb up and cross over the mountain? ||5||
ਚਾਕਰੀਆ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਿਤੁ ॥
Chaakareeaa Changiaaeeaa Avar Siaanap Kith ||
चाकरीआ चंगिआईआ अवर सिआणप कितु ॥
What good does it do to serve, and be good, and be clever?
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥੬॥੧॥੩॥
Naanak Naam Samaal Thoon Badhhaa Shhuttehi Jith ||6||1||3||
नानक नामु समालि तूं बधा छुटहि जितु ॥६॥१॥३॥
O Nanak, contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be released from bondage. ||6||1||3||

Soohee, First Mehl:
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ਬੇੜੁਲਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲੰਘਹਿ ਵਹੇਲਾ ॥
Jap Thap Kaa Bandhh Baerrulaa Jith Langhehi Vehaelaa ||
जप तप का बंधु बेड़ुला जितु लंघहि वहेला ॥
Build the raft of meditation and self-discipline, to carry you across the river.
ਨਾ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਨਾ ਊਛਲੈ ਐਸਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੧॥
Naa Saravar Naa Ooshhalai Aisaa Panthh Suhaelaa ||1||
ना सरवरु ना ऊछलै ऐसा पंथु सुहेला ॥१॥
There will be no ocean, and no rising tides to stop you; this is how comfortable your path shall be. ||1||
ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਜੀਠੜਾ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਸਦ ਰੰਗ ਢੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thaeraa Eaeko Naam Manjeetharraa Rathaa Maeraa Cholaa Sadh Rang Dtolaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
तेरा एको नामु मंजीठड़ा रता मेरा चोला सद रंग ढोला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Your Name alone is the color, in which the robe of my body is dyed. This color is permanent, O my Beloved. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਜਨ ਚਲੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਮੇਲਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
Saajan Chalae Piaariaa Kio Maelaa Hoee ||
साजन चले पिआरिआ किउ मेला होई ॥
My beloved friends have departed; how will they meet the Lord?
ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਗੰਠੜੀਐ ਮੇਲੇਗਾ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥
Jae Gun Hovehi Gantharreeai Maelaegaa Soee ||2||
जे गुण होवहि गंठड़ीऐ मेलेगा सोई ॥२॥
If they have virtue in their pack, the Lord will unite them with Himself. ||2||
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਜੇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥
Miliaa Hoe N Veeshhurrai Jae Miliaa Hoee ||
मिलिआ होइ न वीछुड़ै जे मिलिआ होई ॥
Once united with Him, they will not be separated again, if they are truly united.
ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
Aavaa Goun Nivaariaa Hai Saachaa Soee ||3||
आवा गउणु निवारिआ है साचा सोई ॥३॥
The True Lord brings their comings and goings to an end. ||3||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਸੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਚੋਲਾ ॥
Houmai Maar Nivaariaa Seethaa Hai Cholaa ||
हउमै मारि निवारिआ सीता है चोला ॥
One who subdues and eradicates egotism, sews the robe of devotion.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹ ਕੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬੋਲਾ ॥੪॥
Gur Bachanee Fal Paaeiaa Seh Kae Anmrith Bolaa ||4||
गुर बचनी फलु पाइआ सह के अम्रित बोला ॥४॥
Following the Word of the Guru's Teachings, she receives the fruits of her reward, the Ambrosial Words of the Lord. ||4||
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ਸਹੁ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
Naanak Kehai Sehaeleeho Sahu Kharaa Piaaraa ||
नानकु कहै सहेलीहो सहु खरा पिआरा ॥
Says Nanak, O soul-brides, our Husband Lord is so dear!
ਹਮ ਸਹ ਕੇਰੀਆ ਦਾਸੀਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੫॥੨॥੪॥
Ham Seh Kaereeaa Dhaaseeaa Saachaa Khasam Hamaaraa ||5||2||4||
हम सह केरीआ दासीआ साचा खसमु हमारा ॥५॥२॥४॥
We are the servants, the hand-maidens of the Lord; He is our True Lord and Master. ||5||2||4||

सूही महला १ ॥
Soohee, First Mehl:
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਭਾਉ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਵਾਰਸੀ ॥
Jin Ko Bhaanddai Bhaao Thinaa Savaarasee ||
जिन कउ भांडै भाउ तिना सवारसी ॥
Those whose minds are filled with love of the Lord, are blessed and exalted.
ਸੂਖੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਸਾਉ ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਸੀ ॥
Sookhee Karai Pasaao Dhookh Visaarasee ||
सूखी करै पसाउ दूख विसारसी ॥
They are blessed with peace, and their pains are forgotten.
ਸਹਸਾ ਮੂਲੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਤਾਰਸੀ ॥੧॥
Sehasaa Moolae Naahi Sarapar Thaarasee ||1||
सहसा मूले नाहि सरपर तारसी ॥१॥
He will undoubtedly, certainly save them. ||1||
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲੀਖਿਆ ॥
Thinhaa Miliaa Gur Aae Jin Ko Leekhiaa ||
तिन्हा मिलिआ गुरु आइ जिन कउ लीखिआ ॥
The Guru comes to meet those whose destiny is so pre-ordained.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੀਖਿਆ ॥
Anmrith Har Kaa Naao Dhaevai Dheekhiaa ||
अम्रितु हरि का नाउ देवै दीखिआ ॥
He blesses them with the Teachings of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.
ਚਾਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ਭਵਹਿ ਨ ਭੀਖਿਆ ॥੨॥
Chaalehi Sathigur Bhaae Bhavehi N Bheekhiaa ||2||
चालहि सतिगुर भाइ भवहि न भीखिआ ॥२॥
Those who walk in the Will of the True Guru, never wander begging. ||2||
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਮਹਲੁ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਿਵੈ ਕਿਸੁ ॥
Jaa Ko Mehal Hajoor Dhoojae Nivai Kis ||
जा कउ महलु हजूरि दूजे निवै किसु ॥
And one who lives in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, why should he bow down to any other?
ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵਾਣੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਮੂਲੇ ਪੁਛ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
Dhar Dharavaanee Naahi Moolae Pushh This ||
दरि दरवाणी नाहि मूले पुछ तिसु ॥
The gate-keeper at the Lord's Gate shall not stop him to ask any questions.
ਛੁਟੈ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਦਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ॥੩॥
Shhuttai Thaa Kai Bol Saahib Nadhar Jis ||3||
छुटै ता कै बोलि साहिब नदरि जिसु ॥३॥
And one who is blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace - by his words, others are emancipated as well. ||3||
ਘਲੇ ਆਣੇ ਆਪਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਮਤੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Ghalae Aanae Aap Jis Naahee Dhoojaa Mathai Koe ||
घले आणे आपि जिसु नाही दूजा मतै कोइ ॥
The Lord Himself sends out, and recalls the mortal beings; no one else gives Him advice.
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਸੋਇ ॥
Dtaahi Ousaarae Saaj Jaanai Sabh Soe ||
ढाहि उसारे साजि जाणै सभ सोइ ॥
He Himself demolishes, constructs and creates; He knows everything.
ਨਾਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥
Naao Naanak Bakhasees Nadharee Karam Hoe ||4||3||5||
नाउ नानक बखसीस नदरी करमु होइ ॥४॥३॥५॥
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord is the blessing, given to those who receive His Mercy, and His Grace. ||4||3||5||
