ਨੰਗਾ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਦਿਸੈ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥
Nangaa Dhojak Chaaliaa Thaa Dhisai Kharaa Ddaraavanaa ||
नंगा दोजकि चालिआ ता दिसै खरा डरावणा ॥
He goes to hell naked, and he looks hideous then.
ਕਰਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੧੪॥

करि अउगण पछोतावणा ॥१४॥
He regrets the sins he committed. ||14||

ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਤੁ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤੁ ਵਟੁ ॥
Dhaeiaa Kapaah Santhokh Sooth Jath Gandtee Sath Vatt ||
दइआ कपाह संतोखु सूतु जतु गंढी सतु वटु ॥
Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist.
ਏਹੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤੁ ॥
Eaehu Janaeoo Jeea Kaa Hee Th Paaddae Ghath ||
एहु जनेऊ जीअ का हई त पाडे घतु ॥
This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.
ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਨ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Naa Eaehu Thuttai Naa Mal Lagai Naa Eaehu Jalai N Jaae ||
ना एहु तुटै न मलु लगै ना एहु जलै न जाइ ॥
It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥
Dhhann S Maanas Naanakaa Jo Gal Chalae Paae ||
धंनु सु माणस नानका जो गलि चले पाइ ॥
Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks.
ਚਉਕੜਿ ਮੁਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਬਹਿ ਚਉਕੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Choukarr Mul Anaaeiaa Behi Choukai Paaeiaa ||
चउकड़ि मुलि अणाइआ बहि चउकै पाइआ ॥
You buy the thread for a few shells, and seated in your enclosure, you put it on.
ਸਿਖਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਚੜਾਈਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਥਿਆ ॥
Sikhaa Kann Charraaeeaa Gur Braahaman Thhiaa ||
सिखा कंनि चड़ाईआ गुरु ब्राहमणु थिआ ॥
Whispering instructions into others' ears, the Brahmin becomes a guru.
ਓਹੁ ਮੁਆ ਓਹੁ ਝੜਿ ਪਇਆ ਵੇਤਗਾ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥
Ouhu Muaa Ouhu Jharr Paeiaa Vaethagaa Gaeiaa ||1||
ओहु मुआ ओहु झड़ि पइआ वेतगा गइआ ॥१॥
But he dies, and the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it. ||1||

ਲਖ ਚੋਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਲਖ ਗਾਲਿ ॥
Lakh Choreeaa Lakh Jaareeaa Lakh Koorreeaa Lakh Gaal ||
लख चोरीआ लख जारीआ लख कूड़ीआ लख गालि ॥
He commits thousands of robberies, thousands of acts of adultery, thousands of falsehoods and thousands of abuses.
ਲਖ ਠਗੀਆ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
Lakh Thageeaa Pehinaameeaa Raath Dhinas Jeea Naal ||
लख ठगीआ पहिनामीआ राति दिनसु जीअ नालि ॥
He practices thousands of deceptions and secret deeds, night and day, against his fellow beings.
ਤਗੁ ਕਪਾਹਹੁ ਕਤੀਐ ਬਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਣੁ ਵਟੇ ਆਇ ॥
Thag Kapaahahu Katheeai Baamhan Vattae Aae ||
तगु कपाहहु कतीऐ बाम्हणु वटे आइ ॥
The thread is spun from cotton, and the Brahmin comes and twists it.
ਕੁਹਿ ਬਕਰਾ ਰਿੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
Kuhi Bakaraa Rinnih Khaaeiaa Sabh Ko Aakhai Paae ||
कुहि बकरा रिंन्हि खाइआ सभु को आखै पाइ ॥
The goat is killed, cooked and eaten, and everyone then says, ""Put on the sacred thread.""
ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਸੁਟੀਐ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
Hoe Puraanaa Sutteeai Bhee Fir Paaeeai Hor ||
होइ पुराणा सुटीऐ भी फिरि पाईऐ होरु ॥
When it wears out, it is thrown away, and another one is put on.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਤਗਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਰੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Thag N Thuttee Jae Thag Hovai Jor ||2||
नानक तगु न तुटई जे तगि होवै जोरु ॥२॥
O Nanak, the thread would not break, if it had any real strength. ||2||

नाइ मंनिऐ पति ऊपजै सालाही सचु सूतु ॥
Believing in the Name, honor is obtained. The Lord's Praise is the true sacred thread.
ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥
Dharageh Andhar Paaeeai Thag N Thoottas Pooth ||3||
दरगह अंदरि पाईऐ तगु न तूटसि पूत ॥३॥
Such a sacred thread is worn in the Court of the Lord; it shall never break. ||3||

There is no sacred thread for the sexual organ, and no thread for woman.
ਭਲਕੇ ਥੁਕ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਦਾੜੀ ॥
Bhalakae Thhuk Pavai Nith Dhaarree ||
भलके थुक पवै नित दाड़ी ॥
The man's beard is spat upon daily.
ਤਗੁ ਨ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਹਥੀ ॥
Thag N Pairee Thag N Hathhee ||
तगु न पैरी तगु न हथी ॥
There is no sacred thread for the feet, and no thread for the hands;
ਤਗੁ ਨ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਅਖੀ ॥
Thag N Jihavaa Thag N Akhee ||
तगु न जिहवा तगु न अखी ॥
No thread for the tongue, and no thread for the eyes.
ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥
Vaethagaa Aapae Vathai ||
वेतगा आपे वतै ॥
The Brahmin himself goes to the world hereafter without a sacred thread.
ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥
Vatt Dhhaagae Avaraa Ghathai ||
वटि धागे अवरा घतै ॥
Twisting the threads, he puts them on others.
ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥
Lai Bhaarr Karae Veeaahu ||
लै भाड़ि करे वीआहु ॥
He takes payment for performing marriages;
ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲੁ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥
Kadt Kaagal Dhasae Raahu ||
कढि कागलु दसे राहु ॥
Reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way.
ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ॥
Sun Vaekhahu Lokaa Eaehu Viddaan ||
सुणि वेखहु लोका एहु विडाणु ॥
Hear, and see, O people, this wondrous thing.
ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪॥
Man Andhhaa Naao Sujaan ||4||
मनि अंधा नाउ सुजाणु ॥४॥
He is mentally blind, and yet his name is wisdom. ||4||

Saahib Hoe Dhaeiaal Kirapaa Karae Thaa Saaee Kaar Karaaeisee ||
साहिबु होइ दइआलु किरपा करे ता साई कार कराइसी ॥
One, upon whom the Merciful Lord bestows His Grace, performs His service.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ॥
So Saevak Saevaa Karae Jis No Hukam Manaaeisee ||
सो सेवकु सेवा करे जिस नो हुकमु मनाइसी ॥
That servant, whom the Lord causes to obey the Order of His Will, serves Him.
ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
Hukam Manniai Hovai Paravaan Thaa Khasamai Kaa Mehal Paaeisee ||
हुकमि मंनिऐ होवै परवाणु ता खसमै का महलु पाइसी ॥
Obeying the Order of His Will, he becomes acceptable, and then, he obtains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਹੁ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
Khasamai Bhaavai So Karae Manahu Chindhiaa So Fal Paaeisee ||
खसमै भावै सो करे मनहु चिंदिआ सो फलु पाइसी ॥
One who acts to please His Lord and Master, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires.
ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥੧੫॥
Thaa Dharageh Paidhhaa Jaaeisee ||15||
ता दरगह पैधा जाइसी ॥१५॥
Then, he goes to the Court of the Lord, wearing robes of honor. ||15||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਗਊ ਬਿਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਉ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਰਿ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
Goo Biraahaman Ko Kar Laavahu Gobar Tharan N Jaaee ||
गऊ बिराहमण कउ करु लावहु गोबरि तरणु न जाई ॥
They tax the cows and the Brahmins, but the cow-dung they apply to their kitchen will not save them.
ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਧਾਨੁ ਮਲੇਛਾਂ ਖਾਈ ॥
Dhhothee Ttikaa Thai Japamaalee Dhhaan Malaeshhaan Khaaee ||
धोती टिका तै जपमाली धानु मलेछां खाई ॥
They wear their loin cloths, apply ritual frontal marks to their foreheads, and carry their rosaries, but they eat food with the Muslims.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਰਕਾ ਭਾਈ ॥
Anthar Poojaa Parrehi Kathaebaa Sanjam Thurakaa Bhaaee ||
अंतरि पूजा पड़हि कतेबा संजमु तुरका भाई ॥
O Siblings of Destiny, you perform devotional worship indoors, but read the Islamic sacred texts, and adopt the Muslim way of life.
ਛੋਡੀਲੇ ਪਾਖੰਡਾ ॥

छोडीले पाखंडा ॥
Renounce your hypocrisy!
ਨਾਮਿ ਲਇਐ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ॥੧॥
Naam Laeiai Jaahi Tharandhaa ||1||
नामि लइऐ जाहि तरंदा ॥१॥
Taking the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you shall swim across. ||1||

ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥

The man-eaters say their prayers.
ਛੁਰੀ ਵਗਾਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗ ॥
Shhuree Vagaaein Thin Gal Thaag ||
छुरी वगाइनि तिन गलि ताग ॥
Those who wield the knife wear the sacred thread around their necks.
ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥
Thin Ghar Brehaman Poorehi Naadh ||
तिन घरि ब्रहमण पूरहि नाद ॥
In their homes, the Brahmins sound the conch.
ਉਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਭਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਓਈ ਸਾਦ ॥
Ounhaa Bh Aavehi Ouee Saadh ||
उन्हा भि आवहि ओई साद ॥
They too have the same taste.
ਕੂੜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
Koorree Raas Koorraa Vaapaar ||
कूड़ी रासि कूड़ा वापारु ॥
False is their capital, and false is their trade.
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥
Koorr Bol Karehi Aahaar ||
कूड़ु बोलि करहि आहारु ॥
Speaking falsehood, they take their food.
ਸਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
Saram Dhharam Kaa Ddaeraa Dhoor ||
सरम धरम का डेरा दूरि ॥
The home of modesty and Dharma is far from them.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
Naanak Koorr Rehiaa Bharapoor ||
नानक कूड़ु रहिआ भरपूरि ॥
O Nanak, they are totally permeated with falsehood.
ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੇੜਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਖਾਈ ॥
Mathhai Ttikaa Thaerr Dhhothee Kakhaaee ||
मथै टिका तेड़ि धोती कखाई ॥
The sacred marks are on their foreheads, and the saffron loin-cloths are around their waists;
ਹਥਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਸਾਈ ॥
Hathh Shhuree Jagath Kaasaaee ||
हथि छुरी जगत कासाई ॥
In their hands they hold the knives - they are the butchers of the world!
