ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥
Sathigur Vaddaa Kar Saalaaheeai Jis Vich Vaddeeaa Vaddiaaeeaa ||
सतिगुरु वडा करि सालाहीऐ जिसु विचि वडीआ वडिआईआ ॥
Praise the Great True Guru; within Him is the greatest greatness.
ਸਹਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈਆ ॥
Sehi Maelae Thaa Nadharee Aaeeaa ||
सहि मेले ता नदरी आईआ ॥
When the Lord causes us to meet the Guru, then we come to see them.
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਆ ॥
Jaa This Bhaanaa Thaa Man Vasaaeeaa ||
जा तिसु भाणा ता मनि वसाईआ ॥
When it pleases Him, they come to dwell in our minds.
ਕਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢੀਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ॥
Kar Hukam Masathak Hathh Dhhar Vichahu Maar Kadteeaa Buriaaeeaa ||
करि हुकमु मसतकि हथु धरि विचहु मारि कढीआ बुरिआईआ ॥
By His Command, when He places His hand on our foreheads, wickedness departs from within.
ਸਹਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਆ ॥੧੮॥
Sehi Thuthai No Nidhh Paaeeaa ||18||
सहि तुठै नउ निधि पाईआ ॥१८॥
When the Lord is thoroughly pleased, the nine treasures are obtained. ||18||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੁਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਚੈ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥
Pehilaa Suchaa Aap Hoe Suchai Baithaa Aae ||
पहिला सुचा आपि होइ सुचै बैठा आइ ॥
First, purifying himself, the Brahmin comes and sits in his purified enclosure.
ਸੁਚੇ ਅਗੈ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਭਿਟਿਓ ਜਾਇ ॥
Suchae Agai Rakhioun Koe N Bhittiou Jaae ||
सुचे अगै रखिओनु कोइ न भिटिओ जाइ ॥
The pure foods, which no one else has touched, are placed before him.
ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜੇਵਿਆ ਲਗਾ ਪੜਣਿ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
Suchaa Hoe Kai Jaeviaa Lagaa Parran Salok ||
सुचा होइ कै जेविआ लगा पड़णि सलोकु ॥
Being purified, he takes his food, and begins to read his sacred verses.
ਕੁਹਥੀ ਜਾਈ ਸਟਿਆ ਕਿਸੁ ਏਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਦੋਖੁ ॥
Kuhathhee Jaaee Sattiaa Kis Eaehu Lagaa Dhokh ||
कुहथी जाई सटिआ किसु एहु लगा दोखु ॥
But it is then thrown into a filthy place - whose fault is this?
ਅੰਨੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਲੂਣੁ ਪੰਜਵਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਘਿਰਤੁ ॥
Ann Dhaevathaa Paanee Dhaevathaa Baisanthar Dhaevathaa Loon Panjavaa Paaeiaa Ghirath ||
अंनु देवता पाणी देवता बैसंतरु देवता लूणु पंजवा पाइआ घिरतु ॥
The corn is sacred, the water is sacred; the fire and salt are sacred as well; when the fifth thing, the ghee, is added,
ਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਪਾਕੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ॥
Thaa Hoaa Paak Pavith ||
ता होआ पाकु पवितु ॥
Then the food becomes pure and sanctified.
ਪਾਪੀ ਸਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਗਡਿਆ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਈਆ ਤਿਤੁ ॥
Paapee Sio Than Gaddiaa Thhukaa Peeaa Thith ||
पापी सिउ तनु गडिआ थुका पईआ तितु ॥
Coming into contact with the sinful human body, the food becomes so impure that is is spat upon.
ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਚਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰਸ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
Jith Mukh Naam N Oocharehi Bin Naavai Ras Khaahi ||
जितु मुखि नामु न ऊचरहि बिनु नावै रस खाहि ॥
That mouth which does not chant the Naam, and without the Name eats tasty foods
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
Naanak Eaevai Jaaneeai Thith Mukh Thhukaa Paahi ||1||
नानक एवै जाणीऐ तितु मुखि थुका पाहि ॥१॥
- O Nanak, know this: such a mouth is to be spat upon. ||1||

ਭੰਡਿ ਜੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਨਿੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਮੰਗਣੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥
Bhandd Janmeeai Bhandd Ninmeeai Bhandd Mangan Veeaahu ||
भंडि जमीऐ भंडि निमीऐ भंडि मंगणु वीआहु ॥
From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.
ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੰਡਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਰਾਹੁ ॥
Bhanddahu Hovai Dhosathee Bhanddahu Chalai Raahu ||
भंडहु होवै दोसती भंडहु चलै राहु ॥
Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come.
ਭੰਡੁ ਮੁਆ ਭੰਡੁ ਭਾਲੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੰਧਾਨੁ ॥
Bhandd Muaa Bhandd Bhaaleeai Bhandd Hovai Bandhhaan ||
भंडु मुआ भंडु भालीऐ भंडि होवै बंधानु ॥
When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥
So Kio Mandhaa Aakheeai Jith Janmehi Raajaan ||
सो किउ मंदा आखीऐ जितु जमहि राजान ॥
So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.
ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੀ ਭੰਡੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Bhanddahu Hee Bhandd Oopajai Bhanddai Baajh N Koe ||
भंडहु ही भंडु ऊपजै भंडै बाझु न कोइ ॥
From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
Naanak Bhanddai Baaharaa Eaeko Sachaa Soe ||
नानक भंडै बाहरा एको सचा सोइ ॥
O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman.
ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
Jith Mukh Sadhaa Saalaaheeai Bhaagaa Rathee Chaar ||
जितु मुखि सदा सालाहीऐ भागा रती चारि ॥
That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
Naanak Thae Mukh Oojalae Thith Sachai Dharabaar ||2||
नानक ते मुख ऊजले तितु सचै दरबारि ॥२॥
O Nanak, those faces shall be radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||2||

Pauree:
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੋ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢੀਐ ॥
Sabh Ko Aakhai Aapanaa Jis Naahee So Chun Kadteeai ||
सभु को आखै आपणा जिसु नाही सो चुणि कढीऐ ॥
All call You their own, Lord; one who does not own You, is picked up and thrown away.
ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਸੰਢੀਐ ॥
Keethaa Aapo Aapanaa Aapae Hee Laekhaa Sandteeai ||
कीता आपो आपणा आपे ही लेखा संढीऐ ॥
Everyone receives the rewards of his own actions; his account is adjusted accordingly.
ਜਾ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਐਤੁ ਜਗਿ ਤਾ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਗਾਰਬਿ ਹੰਢੀਐ ॥
Jaa Rehanaa Naahee Aith Jag Thaa Kaaeith Gaarab Handteeai ||
जा रहणा नाही ऐतु जगि ता काइतु गारबि हंढीऐ ॥
Since one is not destined to remain in this world anyway, why should he ruin himself in pride?
ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੜਿ ਅਖਰੁ ਏਹੋ ਬੁਝੀਐ ॥
Mandhaa Kisai N Aakheeai Parr Akhar Eaeho Bujheeai ||
मंदा किसै न आखीऐ पड़ि अखरु एहो बुझीऐ ॥
Do not call anyone bad; read these words, and understand.
ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥
Moorakhai Naal N Lujheeai ||19||
मूरखै नालि न लुझीऐ ॥१९॥
Don't argue with fools. ||19||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਨਾਨਕ ਫਿਕੈ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Naanak Fikai Boliai Than Man Fikaa Hoe ||
नानक फिकै बोलिऐ तनु मनु फिका होइ ॥
O Nanak, speaking insipid words, the body and mind become insipid.
ਫਿਕੋ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਦੀਐ ਫਿਕੇ ਫਿਕੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
Fiko Fikaa Sadheeai Fikae Fikee Soe ||
फिको फिका सदीऐ फिके फिकी सोइ ॥
He is called the most insipid of the insipid; the most insipid of the insipid is his reputation.
ਫਿਕਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਟੀਐ ਮੁਹਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਫਿਕੇ ਪਾਇ ॥
Fikaa Dharageh Satteeai Muhi Thhukaa Fikae Paae ||
फिका दरगह सटीऐ मुहि थुका फिके पाइ ॥
The insipid person is discarded in the Court of the Lord, and the insipid one's face is spat upon.
ਫਿਕਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਾਣਾ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
Fikaa Moorakh Aakheeai Paanaa Lehai Sajaae ||1||
फिका मूरखु आखीऐ पाणा लहै सजाइ ॥१॥
The insipid one is called a fool; he is beaten with shoes in punishment. ||1||

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਪੈਜ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਫੈਲੁ ॥
Andharahu Jhoothae Paij Baahar Dhuneeaa Andhar Fail ||
अंदरहु झूठे पैज बाहरि दुनीआ अंदरि फैलु ॥
Those who are false within, and honorable on the outside, are very common in this world.
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜੇ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈਲੁ ॥
Athasath Theerathh Jae Naavehi Outharai Naahee Mail ||
अठसठि तीरथ जे नावहि उतरै नाही मैलु ॥
Even though they may bathe at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, still, their filth does not depart.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪਟੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਗੁਦੜੁ ਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
Jinh Patt Andhar Baahar Gudharr Thae Bhalae Sansaar ||
जिन्ह पटु अंदरि बाहरि गुदड़ु ते भले संसारि ॥
Those who have silk on the inside and rags on the outside, are the good ones in this world.
ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਰਬ ਸੇਤੀ ਦੇਖਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
Thinh Naehu Lagaa Rab Saethee Dhaekhanhae Veechaar ||
तिन्ह नेहु लगा रब सेती देखन्हे वीचारि ॥
They embrace love for the Lord, and contemplate beholding Him.
ਰੰਗਿ ਹਸਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਚੁਪ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
Rang Hasehi Rang Rovehi Chup Bhee Kar Jaahi ||
रंगि हसहि रंगि रोवहि चुप भी करि जाहि ॥
In the Lord's Love, they laugh, and in the Lord's Love, they weep, and also keep silent.
ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਕੇਰੀ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਹ ॥
Paravaah Naahee Kisai Kaeree Baajh Sachae Naah ||
परवाह नाही किसै केरी बाझु सचे नाह ॥
They do not care for anything else, except their True Husband Lord.
ਦਰਿ ਵਾਟ ਉਪਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਮੰਗਾ ਜਬੈ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
Dhar Vaatt Oupar Kharach Mangaa Jabai Dhaee Th Khaahi ||
दरि वाट उपरि खरचु मंगा जबै देइ त खाहि ॥
Sitting, waiting at the Lord's Door, they beg for food, and when He gives to them, they eat.
ਦੀਬਾਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਕਲਮ ਏਕਾ ਹਮਾ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
Dheebaan Eaeko Kalam Eaekaa Hamaa Thumhaa Mael ||
दीबानु एको कलम एका हमा तुम्हा मेलु ॥
There is only One Court of the Lord, and He has only one pen; there, you and I shall meet.
ਦਰਿ ਲਏ ਲੇਖਾ ਪੀੜਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਉ ਤੇਲੁ ॥੨॥
Dhar Leae Laekhaa Peerr Shhuttai Naanakaa Jio Thael ||2||
दरि लए लेखा पीड़ि छुटै नानका जिउ तेलु ॥२॥
In the Court of the Lord, the accounts are examined; O Nanak, the sinners are crushed, like oil seeds in the press. ||2||
