महा पतित मुगध लोभी फुनि करत पाप अब हारा ॥
I am a great sinner, foolish and greedy; but now, at last, I have grown weary of committing sins.
ਭੈ ਮਰਬੇ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਤਿਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
Bhai Marabae Ko Bisarath Naahin Thih Chinthaa Than Jaaraa ||1||
भै मरबे को बिसरत नाहिन तिह चिंता तनु जारा ॥१॥
I cannot forget the fear of dying; this anxiety is consuming my body. ||1||
ਕੀਏ ਉਪਾਵ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥

कीए उपाव मुकति के कारनि दह दिसि कउ उठि धाइआ ॥
I have been trying to liberate myself, running around in the ten directions.
ਘਟ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

घट ही भीतरि बसै निरंजनु ता को मरमु न पाइआ ॥२॥
The pure, immaculate Lord abides deep within my heart, but I do not understand the secret of His mystery. ||2||
ਨਾਹਿਨ ਗੁਨੁ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਕਛੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਅਬ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

नाहिन गुनु नाहिन कछु जपु तपु कउनु करमु अब कीजै ॥
I have no merit, and I know nothing about meditation or austerities; what should I do now?

जा कउ जोगी खोजत हारे पाइओ नाहि तिह पारा ॥
The Yogis are tired of searching for Him, but they have not found His limit.
ਸੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੁਮ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਪਛਾਨੋ ਰੂਪ ਰੇਖ ਤੇ ਨਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥

सो सुआमी तुम निकटि पछानो रूप रेख ते निआरा ॥१॥
You must understand that the Lord and Master is near at hand, but He has no form or feature. ||1||

I have been wandering around, searching for that enticing, sweet Beloved.
ਤਿਸੁ ਦਸਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਿਰੁ ਧਰੀ ਉਤਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਭੋਰੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

तिसु दसि पिआरे सिरु धरी उतारे इक भोरी दरसनु दीजै ॥
Whoever leads me to my Beloved - I would cut off my head and offer it to him, even if I were granted the Blessed Vision of His Darshan for just an instant.
ਨੈਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗਾਰੇ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੀ ਨਾ ਧੀਰੀਜੈ ॥
Nain Hamaarae Pria Rang Rangaarae Eik Thil Bhee Naa Dhheereejai ||
नैन हमारे प्रिअ रंग रंगारे इकु तिलु भी ना धीरीजै ॥
My eyes are drenched with the Love of my Beloved; without Him, I do not have even a moment's peace.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਲੀਨਾ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮੀਨਾ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਿਵੈ ਤਿਸੰਤੀਆ ॥
Prabh Sio Man Leenaa Jio Jal Meenaa Chaathrik Jivai Thisantheeaa ||
प्रभ सिउ मनु लीना जिउ जल मीना चात्रिक जिवै तिसंतीआ ॥
My mind is attached to the Lord, like the fish to the water, and the rainbird, thirsty for the raindrops.

यार वे प्रिअ हभे सखीआ मू कही न जेहीआ ॥
O intimate friend, my Beloved has all these loving companions; I cannot compare to any of them.
ਯਾਰ ਵੇ ਹਿਕ ਡੂੰ ਹਿਕਿ ਚਾੜੈ ਹਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਚਿਤੇਹੀਆ ॥
Yaar Vae Hik Ddoon Hik Chaarrai Ho Kis Chithaeheeaa ||
यार वे हिक डूं हिकि चाड़ै हउ किसु चितेहीआ ॥
O intimate friend, each of them is more beautiful than the others; who could consider me?
ਹਿਕ ਦੂੰ ਹਿਕਿ ਚਾੜੇ ਅਨਿਕ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ॥
Hik Dhoon Hik Chaarrae Anik Piaarae Nith Karadhae Bhog Bilaasaa ||
हिक दूं हिकि चाड़े अनिक पिआरे नित करदे भोग बिलासा ॥
Each of them is more beautiful than the others; countless are His lovers, constantly enjoying bliss with Him.
ਤਿਨਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਉਠੰਦਾ ਹਉ ਕਦਿ ਪਾਈ ਗੁਣਤਾਸਾ ॥
Thinaa Dhaekh Man Chaao Outhandhaa Ho Kadh Paaee Gunathaasaa ||
तिना देखि मनि चाउ उठंदा हउ कदि पाई गुणतासा ॥
Beholding them, desire wells up in my mind; when will I obtain the Lord, the treasure of virtue?
ਜਿਨੀ ਮੈਡਾ ਲਾਲੁ ਰੀਝਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਮਨੁ ਡੇਂਹੀਆ ॥

Says Nanak, hear my prayer, O happy soul-brides; tell me, what does my Husband Lord look like? ||2||
