मः ३ ॥
Third Mehl:
ਬਾਬੀਹਾ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨ ॥
Baabeehaa Baenathee Karae Kar Kirapaa Dhaehu Jeea Dhaan ||
बाबीहा बेनती करे करि किरपा देहु जीअ दान ॥
The rainbird prays: O Lord, grant Your Grace, and bless me with the gift of the life of the soul.
ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਸ ਨ ਊਤਰੈ ਛੁਟਕਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ॥
Jal Bin Piaas N Ootharai Shhuttak Jaanhi Maerae Praan ||
जल बिनु पिआस न ऊतरै छुटकि जांहि मेरे प्रान ॥
Without the water, my thirst is not quenched, and my breath of life is ended and gone.
ਤੂ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਨੇਧਾਨੁ ॥
Thoo Sukhadhaathaa Baeanth Hai Gunadhaathaa Naedhhaan ||
तू सुखदाता बेअंतु है गुणदाता नेधानु ॥
You are the Giver of peace, O Infinite Lord God; You are the Giver of the treasure of virtue.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਅੰਤਿ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Guramukh Bakhas Leae Anth Baelee Hoe Bhagavaan ||2||
नानक गुरमुखि बखसि लए अंति बेली होइ भगवानु ॥२॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is forgiven; in the end, the Lord God shall be your only friend. ||2||

Pauree:
ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਗੁਣ ਅਉਗਣ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Aapae Jagath Oupaae Kai Gun Aougan Karae Beechaar ||
आपे जगतु उपाइ कै गुण अउगण करे बीचारु ॥
He created the world; He considers the merits and demerits of the mortals.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Thrai Gun Sarab Janjaal Hai Naam N Dhharae Piaar ||
त्रै गुण सरब जंजालु है नामि न धरे पिआरु ॥
Those who are entangled in the three gunas - the three dispositions - do not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਹੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
Gun Shhodd Aougan Kamaavadhae Dharageh Hohi Khuaar ||
गुण छोडि अउगण कमावदे दरगह होहि खुआरु ॥
Forsaking virtue, they practice evil; they shall be miserable in the Court of the Lord.
ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਤਿਨੀ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
Jooai Janam Thinee Haariaa Kith Aaeae Sansaar ||
जूऐ जनमु तिनी हारिआ कितु आए संसारि ॥
They lose their life in the gamble; why did they even come into the world?
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
Sachai Sabadh Man Maariaa Ahinis Naam Piaar ||
सचै सबदि मनु मारिआ अहिनिसि नामि पिआरि ॥
But those who conquer and subdue their minds, through the True Word of the Shabad - night and day, they love the Naam.
ਜਿਨੀ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
Jinee Purakhee Our Dhhaariaa Sachaa Alakh Apaar ||
जिनी पुरखी उरि धारिआ सचा अलख अपारु ॥
Those people enshrine the True, Invisible and Infinite Lord in their hearts.
ਤੂ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਹਿ ਅਸੀ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰ ॥
Thoo Gunadhaathaa Nidhhaan Hehi Asee Avaganiaar ||
तू गुणदाता निधानु हहि असी अवगणिआर ॥
You, O Lord, are the Giver, the Treasure of virtue; I am unvirtuous and unworthy.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਸੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧੩॥
Jis Bakhasae So Paaeisee Gur Sabadhee Veechaar ||13||
जिसु बखसे सो पाइसी गुर सबदी वीचारु ॥१३॥
He alone finds You, whom You bless and forgive, and inspire to contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||13||

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਵਿਹਾਵੀ ਸਾਕਤਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
Raath N Vihaavee Saakathaan Jinhaa Visarai Naao ||
राति न विहावी साकतां जिन्हा विसरै नाउ ॥
The faithless cynics forget the Name of the Lord; the night of their lives does not pass in peace.
ਰਾਤੀ ਦਿਨਸ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਉ ॥੧॥
Raathee Dhinas Suhaeleeaa Naanak Har Gun Gaano ||1||
राती दिनस सुहेलीआ नानक हरि गुण गांउ ॥१॥
Their days and nights become comfortable, O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕਾ ਹਭੇ ਮਣੀ ਮਥੰਨਿ ॥
Rathan Javaehar Maanakaa Habhae Manee Mathhann ||
रतन जवेहर माणका हभे मणी मथंनि ॥
All sorts of jewels and gems, diamonds and rubies, shine forth from their foreheads.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਣਿਆ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹੰਨਿ ॥੨॥
Naanak Jo Prabh Bhaaniaa Sachai Dhar Sohann ||2||
नानक जो प्रभि भाणिआ सचै दरि सोहंनि ॥२॥
O Nanak, those who are pleasing to God, look beautiful in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

Pauree:
ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
Sachaa Sathigur Saev Sach Samhaaliaa ||
सचा सतिगुरु सेवि सचु सम्हालिआ ॥
Serving the True Guru, I dwell on the True Lord.
ਅੰਤਿ ਖਲੋਆ ਆਇ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਘਾਲਿਆ ॥
Anth Khaloaa Aae J Sathigur Agai Ghaaliaa ||
अंति खलोआ आइ जि सतिगुर अगै घालिआ ॥
The work you have done for the True Guru shall be very useful in the end.
ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਿਆ ॥
Pohi N Sakai Jamakaal Sachaa Rakhavaaliaa ||
पोहि न सकै जमकालु सचा रखवालिआ ॥
The Messenger of Death cannot even touch that person who is protected by the True Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾਇ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲਿਆ ॥
Gur Saakhee Joth Jagaae Dheevaa Baaliaa ||
गुर साखी जोति जगाइ दीवा बालिआ ॥
Lighting the lamp of the Guru's Teachings, my awareness has been awakened.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ॥
Manamukh Vin Naavai Koorriaar Firehi Baethaaliaa ||
मनमुख विणु नावै कूड़िआर फिरहि बेतालिआ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are false; without the Name, they wander around like demons.
ਪਸੂ ਮਾਣਸ ਚੰਮਿ ਪਲੇਟੇ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਕਾਲਿਆ ॥
Pasoo Maanas Chanm Palaettae Andharahu Kaaliaa ||
पसू माणस चमि पलेटे अंदरहु कालिआ ॥
They are nothing more than beasts, wrapped up in human skin; they are black-hearted within.
ਸਭੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
Sabho Varathai Sach Sachai Sabadh Nihaaliaa ||
सभो वरतै सचु सचै सबदि निहालिआ ॥
The True Lord is pervading all; through the True Word of the Shabad, He is seen.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥੧੪॥
Naanak Naam Nidhhaan Hai Poorai Gur Dhaekhaaliaa ||14||
नानक नामु निधानु है पूरै गुरि देखालिआ ॥१४॥
O Nanak, the Naam is the greatest treasure. The Perfect Guru has revealed it to me. ||14||

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਬਾਬੀਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
Baabeehai Hukam Pashhaaniaa Gur Kai Sehaj Subhaae ||
बाबीहै हुकमु पछाणिआ गुर कै सहजि सुभाइ ॥
The rainbird realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command with intuitive ease through the Guru.
ਮੇਘੁ ਵਰਸੈ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਗੂੜੀ ਛਹਬਰ ਲਾਇ ॥
Maegh Varasai Dhaeiaa Kar Goorree Shhehabar Laae ||
मेघु वरसै दइआ करि गूड़ी छहबर लाइ ॥
The clouds mercifully burst forth, and the rain pours down in torrents.
ਬਾਬੀਹੇ ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
Baabeehae Kook Pukaar Rehi Gee Sukh Vasiaa Man Aae ||
बाबीहे कूक पुकार रहि गई सुखु वसिआ मनि आइ ॥
The cries and wailings of the rainbird have ceased, and peace has come to abide in its mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਆ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
Naanak So Saalaaheeai J Dhaenadhaa Sabhanaan Jeeaa Rijak Samaae ||1||
नानक सो सालाहीऐ जि देंदा सभनां जीआ रिजकु समाइ ॥१॥
O Nanak, praise that Lord, who reaches out and gives sustenance to all beings and creatures. ||1||

ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਤੂ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਿਖਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਪੀਤੈ ਤਿਖ ਜਾਇ ॥
Chaathrik Thoo N Jaanehee Kiaa Thudhh Vich Thikhaa Hai Kith Peethai Thikh Jaae ||
चात्रिक तू न जाणही किआ तुधु विचि तिखा है कितु पीतै तिख जाइ ॥
O rainbird, you do not know what thirst is within you, or what you can drink to quench it.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰੰਮਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
Dhoojai Bhaae Bharanmiaa Anmrith Jal Palai N Paae ||
दूजै भाइ भरमिआ अम्रित जलु पलै न पाइ ॥
You wander in the love of duality, and you do not obtain the Ambrosial Water.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
Nadhar Karae Jae Aapanee Thaan Sathigur Milai Subhaae ||
नदरि करे जे आपणी तां सतिगुरु मिलै सुभाइ ॥
When God casts His Glance of Grace, then the mortal automatically meets the True Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
Naanak Sathigur Thae Anmrith Jal Paaeiaa Sehajae Rehiaa Samaae ||2||
नानक सतिगुर ते अम्रित जलु पाइआ सहजे रहिआ समाइ ॥२॥
O Nanak, the Ambrosial Water is obtained from the True Guru, and then the mortal remains merged in the Lord with intuitive ease. ||2||

ਇਕਿ ਵਣ ਖੰਡਿ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਦੁ ਨ ਦੇਵਹੀ ॥
Eik Van Khandd Baisehi Jaae Sadh N Dhaevehee ||
इकि वण खंडि बैसहि जाइ सदु न देवही ॥
Some go and sit in the forest realms, and do not answer any calls.
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਕਰੁ ਭੰਨਿ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਜਲੁ ਹੇਂਵਹੀ ॥
Eik Paalaa Kakar Bhann Seethal Jal Haenavehee ||
इकि पाला ककरु भंनि सीतलु जलु हेंवही ॥
Some, in the dead of winter, break the ice and immerse themselves in freezing water.
ਇਕਿ ਭਸਮ ਚੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਗਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਧੋਵਹੀ ॥
Eik Bhasam Charrhaavehi Ang Mail N Dhhovehee ||
इकि भसम चड़्हावहि अंगि मैलु न धोवही ॥
Some rub ashes on their bodies, and never wash off their dirt.
ਇਕਿ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਕੁਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਖੋਵਹੀ ॥
Eik Jattaa Bikatt Bikaraal Kul Ghar Khovehee ||
इकि जटा बिकट बिकराल कुलु घरु खोवही ॥
Some look hideous, with their uncut hair matted and dishevelled. They bring dishonor to their family and ancestry.
