ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Dhhandhhai Dhhaavath Jag Baadhhiaa Naa Boojhai Veechaar ||
धंधै धावत जगु बाधिआ ना बूझै वीचारु ॥
The world is chasing after worldly affairs; caught and bound, it does not understand contemplative meditation.
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥
Janman Maran Visaariaa Manamukh Mugadhh Gavaar ||
जमण मरणु विसारिआ मनमुख मुगधु गवारु ॥
The foolish, ignorant, self-willed manmukh has forgotten birth and death.
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
Gur Raakhae Sae Oubarae Sachaa Sabadh Veechaar ||7||
गुरि राखे से उबरे सचा सबदु वीचारि ॥७॥
Those whom the Guru has protected are saved, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. ||7||
ਸੂਹਟੁ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
Soohatt Pinjar Praem Kai Bolai Bolanehaar ||
सूहटु पिंजरि प्रेम कै बोलै बोलणहारु ॥
In the cage of divine love, the parrot, speaks.
ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਤ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ ॥
Sach Chugai Anmrith Peeai Ouddai Th Eaekaa Vaar ||
सचु चुगै अम्रितु पीऐ उडै त एका वार ॥
It pecks at the Truth, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar; it flies away, only once.

Sabadh Marai Thaa Maar Mar Bhaago Kis Pehi Jaao ||
सबदि मरै ता मारि मरु भागो किसु पहि जाउ ॥
One who dies in the Word of the Shabad conquers death; otherwise, where can you run?
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਡਰਿ ਭੈ ਭਾਗੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥
Jis Kai Ddar Bhai Bhaageeai Anmrith Thaa Ko Naao ||
जिस कै डरि भै भागीऐ अम्रितु ता को नाउ ॥
Through the Fear of God, fear runs away; His Name is Ambrosial Nectar.
ਮਾਰਹਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਬੀਜਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥
Maarehi Raakhehi Eaek Thoo Beejo Naahee Thhaao ||1||
मारहि राखहि एकु तू बीजउ नाही थाउ ॥१॥
You alone kill and protect; except for You, there is no place at all. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਕਾਚਉ ਮਤਿਹੀਨ ॥
Baabaa Mai Kucheel Kaacho Mathiheen ||
बाबा मै कुचीलु काचउ मतिहीन ॥
O Baba, I am filthy, shallow and totally without understanding.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੀਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Naam Binaa Ko Kashh Nehee Gur Poorai Pooree Math Keen ||1|| Rehaao ||
नाम बिना को कछु नही गुरि पूरै पूरी मति कीन ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Without the Naam, no one is anything; the Perfect Guru has made my intellect perfect. ||1||Pause||
ਅਵਗਣਿ ਸੁਭਰ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
Avagan Subhar Gun Nehee Bin Gun Kio Ghar Jaao ||
अवगणि सुभर गुण नही बिनु गुण किउ घरि जाउ ॥
I am full of faults, and I have no virtue at all. Without virtues, how can I go home?
ਸਹਜਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Sehaj Sabadh Sukh Oopajai Bin Bhaagaa Dhhan Naahi ||
सहजि सबदि सुखु ऊपजै बिनु भागा धनु नाहि ॥
Through the Word of the Shabad, intuitive peace wells up; without good destiny, the wealth is not obtained.
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
Jin Kai Naam N Man Vasai Sae Baadhhae Dhookh Sehaahi ||2||
जिन कै नामु न मनि वसै से बाधे दूख सहाहि ॥२॥
Those whose minds are not filled with the Naam are bound and gagged, and suffer in pain. ||2||
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
Jinee Naam Visaariaa Sae Kith Aaeae Sansaar ||
जिनी नामु विसारिआ से कितु आए संसारि ॥
Those who have forgotten the Naam - why have they even come into the world?
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਗਾਡੇ ਲਾਦੇ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
Aagai Paashhai Sukh Nehee Gaaddae Laadhae Shhaar ||
आगै पाछै सुखु नही गाडे लादे छारु ॥
Here and hereafter, they do not find any peace; they have loaded their carts with ashes.
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਾ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੩॥
Vishhurriaa Maelaa Nehee Dhookh Ghano Jam Dhuaar ||3||
विछुड़िआ मेला नही दूखु घणो जम दुआरि ॥३॥
Those who are separated, do not meet with the Lord; they suffer in terrible pain at Death's Door. ||3||
ਅਗੈ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੂ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥
Agai Kiaa Jaanaa Naahi Mai Bhoolae Thoo Samajhaae ||
अगै किआ जाणा नाहि मै भूले तू समझाइ ॥
I do not know what will happen in the world hereafter; I am so confused - please teach me, Lord!
ਭੂਲੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਜੋ ਦਸੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥
Bhoolae Maarag Jo Dhasae This Kai Laago Paae ||
भूले मारगु जो दसे तिस कै लागउ पाइ ॥
I am confused; I would fall at the feet of one who shows me the Way.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥
Gur Bin Dhaathaa Ko Nehee Keemath Kehan N Jaae ||4||
गुर बिनु दाता को नही कीमति कहणु न जाइ ॥४॥
Without the Guru, there is no giver at all; His value cannot be described. ||4||
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਠਾਇਓ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
Saajan Dhaekhaa Thaa Gal Milaa Saach Pathaaeiou Laekh ||
साजनु देखा ता गलि मिला साचु पठाइओ लेखु ॥
If I see my friend, then I will embrace Him; I have sent Him the letter of Truth.
ਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਮਾਣੈ ਧਨ ਖੜੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਦੇਖੁ ॥
Mukh Dhhimaanai Dhhan Kharree Guramukh Aakhee Dhaekh ||
मुखि धिमाणै धन खड़ी गुरमुखि आखी देखु ॥
His soul-bride stands waiting expectantly; as Gurmukh, I see Him with my eyes.
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੂ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੫॥
Thudhh Bhaavai Thoo Man Vasehi Nadharee Karam Visaekh ||5||
तुधु भावै तू मनि वसहि नदरी करमि विसेखु ॥५॥
By the Pleasure of Your Will, You abide in my mind, and bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||5||
ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸੋ ਜੇ ਭਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਗਉ ਦੇਇ ॥
Bhookh Piaaso Jae Bhavai Kiaa This Maago Dhaee ||
भूख पिआसो जे भवै किआ तिसु मागउ देइ ॥
One who is wandering hungry and thirsty - what can he give, and what can anyone ask from him?
ਬੀਜਉ ਸੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
Beejo Soojhai Ko Nehee Man Than Pooran Dhaee ||
बीजउ सूझै को नही मनि तनि पूरनु देइ ॥
I cannot conceive of any other, who can bless my mind and body with perfection.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੬॥
Jin Keeaa Thin Dhaekhiaa Aap Vaddaaee Dhaee ||6||
जिनि कीआ तिनि देखिआ आपि वडाई देइ ॥६॥
The One who created me takes care of me; He Himself blesses me with glory. ||6||
ਨਗਰੀ ਨਾਇਕੁ ਨਵਤਨੋ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਲੀਲ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
Nagaree Naaeik Navathano Baalak Leel Anoop ||
नगरी नाइकु नवतनो बालकु लील अनूपु ॥
In the body-village is my Lord and Master, whose body is ever-new, Innocent and child-like, incomparably playful.
ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਪੰਖਣੂ ਸਾਚਉ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥
Naar N Purakh N Pankhanoo Saacho Chathur Saroop ||
नारि न पुरखु न पंखणू साचउ चतुरु सरूपु ॥
He is neither a woman, nor a man, nor a bird; the True Lord is so wise and beautiful.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਤੂ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਤੂ ਧੂਪੁ ॥੭॥
Jo This Bhaavai So Thheeai Thoo Dheepak Thoo Dhhoop ||7||
जो तिसु भावै सो थीऐ तू दीपकु तू धूपु ॥७॥
Whatever pleases Him, happens; You are the lamp, and You are the incense. ||7||
ਗੀਤ ਸਾਦ ਚਾਖੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਬਾਦ ਸਾਦ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ॥
Geeth Saadh Chaakhae Sunae Baadh Saadh Than Rog ||
गीत साद चाखे सुणे बाद साद तनि रोगु ॥
He hears the songs and tastes the flavors, but these flavors are useless and insipid, and bring only disease to the body.
ਸਚੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਚਉ ਚਵੈ ਛੂਟੈ ਸੋਗ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥
Sach Bhaavai Saacho Chavai Shhoottai Sog Vijog ||
सचु भावै साचउ चवै छूटै सोग विजोगु ॥
One who loves the Truth and speaks the Truth, escapes from the sorrow of separation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
Naanak Naam N Veesarai Jo This Bhaavai S Hog ||8||3||
नानक नामु न वीसरै जो तिसु भावै सु होगु ॥८॥३॥
Nanak does not forget the Naam; whatever happens is by the Lord's Will. ||8||3||

साची कार कमावणी होरि लालच बादि ॥
Practice Truth - other greed and attachments are useless.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਾਦਿ ॥
Eihu Man Saachai Mohiaa Jihavaa Sach Saadh ||
इहु मनु साचै मोहिआ जिहवा सचि सादि ॥
The True Lord has fascinated this mind, and my tongue enjoys the taste of Truth.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
Bin Naavai Ko Ras Nehee Hor Chalehi Bikh Laadh ||1||
बिनु नावै को रसु नही होरि चलहि बिखु लादि ॥१॥
Without the Name, there is no juice; the others depart, loaded with poison. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੋ ਸੁਣਿ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
Aisaa Laalaa Maerae Laal Ko Sun Khasam Hamaarae ||
ऐसा लाला मेरे लाल को सुणि खसम हमारे ॥
I am such a slave of Yours, O my Beloved Lord and Master.
ਜਿਉ ਫੁਰਮਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਲ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jio Furamaavehi Thio Chalaa Sach Laal Piaarae ||1|| Rehaao ||
जिउ फुरमावहि तिउ चला सचु लाल पिआरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
I walk in harmony with Your Command, O my True, Sweet Beloved. ||1||Pause||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਲੇ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਗੋਲੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੀਰਾ ॥
Anadhin Laalae Chaakaree Golae Sir Meeraa ||
अनदिनु लाले चाकरी गोले सिरि मीरा ॥
Night and day, the slave works for his overlord.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥
Gur Bachanee Man Vaechiaa Sabadh Man Dhheeraa ||
गुर बचनी मनु वेचिआ सबदि मनु धीरा ॥
I have sold my mind for the Word of the Guru's Shabad; my mind is comforted and consoled by the Shabad.
