हरि पड़ीऐ हरि बुझीऐ गुरमती नामि उधारा ॥
Study the Lord's Name, and understand the Lord's Name; follow the Guru's Teachings, and through the Naam, you shall be saved.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
Gur Poorai Pooree Math Hai Poorai Sabadh Beechaaraa ||
गुरि पूरै पूरी मति है पूरै सबदि बीचारा ॥
Perfect are the Teachings of the Perfect Guru; contemplate the Perfect Word of the Shabad.
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

अठसठि तीरथ हरि नामु है किलविख काटणहारा ॥२॥
The Lord's Name is the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and the Eradicator of sins. ||2||
ਜਲੁ ਬਿਲੋਵੈ ਜਲੁ ਮਥੈ ਤਤੁ ਲੋੜੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਅਗਿਆਨਾ ॥
Jal Bilovai Jal Mathhai Thath Lorrai Andhh Agiaanaa ||
जलु बिलोवै जलु मथै ततु लोड़ै अंधु अगिआना ॥
The blind ignorant mortal stirs the water and churns the water, wishing to obtain butter.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਦਧਿ ਮਥੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
Guramathee Dhadhh Mathheeai Anmrith Paaeeai Naam Nidhhaanaa ||
गुरमती दधि मथीऐ अम्रितु पाईऐ नामु निधाना ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, one churns the cream, and the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam is obtained.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਪਸੂ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
Manamukh Thath N Jaananee Pasoo Maahi Samaanaa ||3||
मनमुख ततु न जाणनी पसू माहि समाना ॥३॥
The self-willed manmukh is a beast; he does not know the essence of reality that is contained within himself. ||3||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਰੀ ਮਰੁ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
Houmai Maeraa Maree Mar Mar Janmai Vaaro Vaar ||
हउमै मेरा मरी मरु मरि जमै वारो वार ॥
Dying in egotism and self-conceit, one dies, and dies again, only to be reincarnated over and over again.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
Gur Kai Sabadhae Jae Marai Fir Marai N Dhoojee Vaar ||
गुर कै सबदे जे मरै फिरि मरै न दूजी वार ॥
But when he dies in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, then he does not die, ever again.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭਿ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥
Guramathee Jagajeevan Man Vasai Sabh Kul Oudhhaaranehaar ||4||
गुरमती जगजीवनु मनि वसै सभि कुल उधारणहार ॥४॥
When he follows the Guru's Teachings, and enshrines the Lord, the Life of the World, within his mind, he redeems all his generations. ||4||
ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
Sachaa Vakhar Naam Hai Sachaa Vaapaaraa ||
सचा वखरु नामु है सचा वापारा ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the true object, the true commodity.
ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
Laahaa Naam Sansaar Hai Guramathee Veechaaraa ||
लाहा नामु संसारि है गुरमती वीचारा ॥
The Naam is the only true profit in this world. Follow the Guru's Teachings, and contemplate it.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਨਿਤ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
Dhoojai Bhaae Kaar Kamaavanee Nith Thottaa Saisaaraa ||5||
दूजै भाइ कार कमावणी नित तोटा सैसारा ॥५॥
To work in the love of duality, brings constant loss in this world. ||5||
ਸਾਚੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਾ ॥
Saachee Sangath Thhaan Sach Sachae Ghar Baaraa ||
साची संगति थानु सचु सचे घर बारा ॥
True is one's association, true is one's place,
ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
Sachaa Bhojan Bhaao Sach Sach Naam Adhhaaraa ||
सचा भोजनु भाउ सचु सचु नामु अधारा ॥
And true is one's hearth and home, when one has the support of the Naam.
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
Sachee Baanee Santhokhiaa Sachaa Sabadh Veechaaraa ||6||
सची बाणी संतोखिआ सचा सबदु वीचारा ॥६॥
Contemplating the True Word of the Guru's Bani, and the True Word of the Shabad, one becomes content. ||6||
ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਘਾਰਾ ॥
Ras Bhogan Paathisaaheeaa Dhukh Sukh Sanghaaraa ||
रस भोगण पातिसाहीआ दुख सुख संघारा ॥
Enjoying princely pleasures, one shall be destroyed in pain and pleasure.
ਮੋਟਾ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਾਈਐ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
Mottaa Naao Dhharaaeeai Gal Aougan Bhaaraa ||
मोटा नाउ धराईऐ गलि अउगण भारा ॥
Adopting a name of greatness, one strings heavy sins around his neck.
ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
Maanas Dhaath N Hovee Thoo Dhaathaa Saaraa ||7||
माणस दाति न होवई तू दाता सारा ॥७॥
Mankind cannot give gifts; You alone are the Giver of everything. ||7||
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਅਵਿਗਤੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
Agam Agochar Thoo Dhhanee Avigath Apaaraa ||
अगम अगोचरु तू धणी अविगतु अपारा ॥
You are inaccessible and unfathomable; O Lord, You are imperishable and infinite.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਦਰੁ ਜੋਈਐ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
Gur Sabadhee Dhar Joeeai Mukathae Bhanddaaraa ||
गुर सबदी दरु जोईऐ मुकते भंडारा ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, seeking at the Lord's Door, one finds the treasure of liberation.

बिखु बोहिथा लादिआ दीआ समुंद मंझारि ॥
The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.
ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
Kandhhee Dhis N Aavee Naa Ouravaar N Paar ||
कंधी दिसि न आवई ना उरवारु न पारु ॥
The shore cannot be seen on this side, nor on the shore beyond.
ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥
Vanjhee Haathh N Khaevattoo Jal Saagar Asaraal ||1||
वंझी हाथि न खेवटू जलु सागरु असरालु ॥१॥
There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||
ਬਾਬਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਾਲਿ ॥
Baabaa Jag Faathhaa Mehaa Jaal ||
बाबा जगु फाथा महा जालि ॥
O Baba, the world is caught in the great noose.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Sathiguroo Hai Bohithhaa Sabadh Langhaavanehaar ||
सतिगुरू है बोहिथा सबदि लंघावणहारु ॥
The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across.
ਤਿਥੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
Thithhai Pavan N Paavako Naa Jal Naa Aakaar ||
तिथै पवणु न पावको ना जलु ना आकारु ॥
There is neither wind nor fire, neither water nor form there.
ਤਿਥੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Thithhai Sachaa Sach Naae Bhavajal Thaaranehaar ||2||
तिथै सचा सचि नाइ भवजल तारणहारु ॥२॥
The True Name of the True Lord is there; it carries them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
Guramukh Langhae Sae Paar Peae Sachae Sio Liv Laae ||
गुरमुखि लंघे से पारि पए सचे सिउ लिव लाइ ॥
The Gurmukhs reach the shore beyond, lovingly focusing on the True Lord.
ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
Aavaa Goun Nivaariaa Jothee Joth Milaae ||
आवा गउणु निवारिआ जोती जोति मिलाइ ॥
Their comings and goings are ended, and their light merges into the Light.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
Guramathee Sehaj Oopajai Sachae Rehai Samaae ||3||
गुरमती सहजु ऊपजै सचे रहै समाइ ॥३॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, intuitive peace wells up within them, and they remain merged in the True Lord. ||3||
ਸਪੁ ਪਿੜਾਈ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ॥
Sap Pirraaee Paaeeai Bikh Anthar Man Ros ||
सपु पिड़ाई पाईऐ बिखु अंतरि मनि रोसु ॥
The snake may be locked in a basket, but it is still poisonous, and the anger within its mind remains.
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੀਜੈ ਦੋਸੁ ॥
Poorab Likhiaa Paaeeai Kis No Dheejai Dhos ||
पूरबि लिखिआ पाईऐ किस नो दीजै दोसु ॥
One obtains what is pre-ordained; why does he blame others?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਰੜੁ ਜੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੰਤੋਸੁ ॥੪॥
Guramukh Gaararr Jae Sunae Mannae Naao Santhos ||4||
गुरमुखि गारड़ु जे सुणे मंने नाउ संतोसु ॥४॥
If one, as Gurmukh, hears and believes in the Name, the charm against poison, his mind becomes content. ||4||
ਮਾਗਰਮਛੁ ਫਹਾਈਐ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਵਤਾਇ ॥
Maagaramashh Fehaaeeai Kunddee Jaal Vathaae ||
मागरमछु फहाईऐ कुंडी जालु वताइ ॥
The crocodile is caught by the hook and line;
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਥਾ ਫਾਹੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ ॥
Dhuramath Faathhaa Faaheeai Fir Fir Pashhothaae ||
दुरमति फाथा फाहीऐ फिरि फिरि पछोताइ ॥
Caught in the trap of evil-mindedness, he regrets and repents, again and again.
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
Janman Maran N Sujhee Kirath N Maettiaa Jaae ||5||
जमण मरणु न सुझई किरतु न मेटिआ जाइ ॥५॥
He does not understand birth and death; the inscription of one's past actions cannot be erased. ||5||
ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Houmai Bikh Paae Jagath Oupaaeiaa Sabadh Vasai Bikh Jaae ||
हउमै बिखु पाइ जगतु उपाइआ सबदु वसै बिखु जाइ ॥
Injecting the poison of egotism, the world was created; with the Shabad enshrined within, the poison is eliminated.
ਜਰਾ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
Jaraa Johi N Sakee Sach Rehai Liv Laae ||
जरा जोहि न सकई सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥
Old age cannot torment one who remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord.
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
Jeevan Mukath So Aakheeai Jis Vichahu Houmai Jaae ||6||
जीवन मुकतु सो आखीऐ जिसु विचहु हउमै जाइ ॥६॥
He alone is called Jivan-Mikta, liberated while yet alive, from within whom egotism is eradicated. ||6||
