गुरमुखि होवै सु सोझी पाए ॥
One who becomes Gurmukh understands.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
Houmai Maaeiaa Bharam Gavaaeae ||
हउमै माइआ भरमु गवाए ॥
He rids himself of egotism, Maya and doubt.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਊਤਮ ਊਚੀ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
Gur Kee Pourree Ootham Oochee Dhar Sachai Har Gun Gaaeidhaa ||7||
गुर की पउड़ी ऊतम ऊची दरि सचै हरि गुण गाइदा ॥७॥
He ascends the sublime, exalted ladder of the Guru, and he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord at His True Door. ||7||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
Guramukh Sach Sanjam Karanee Saar ||
गुरमुखि सचु संजमु करणी सारु ॥
The Gurmukh practices true self-control, and acts in excellence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
Guramukh Paaeae Mokh Dhuaar ||
गुरमुखि पाए मोख दुआरु ॥
The Gurmukh obtains the gate of salvation.
ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
Bhaae Bhagath Sadhaa Rang Raathaa Aap Gavaae Samaaeidhaa ||8||
भाइ भगति सदा रंगि राता आपु गवाइ समाइदा ॥८॥
Through loving devotion, he remains forever imbued with the Lord's Love; eradicating self-conceit, he merges in the Lord. ||8||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
Guramukh Hovai Man Khoj Sunaaeae ||
गुरमुखि होवै मनु खोजि सुणाए ॥
One who becomes Gurmukh examines his own mind, and instructs others.
ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
Sachai Naam Sadhaa Liv Laaeae ||
सचै नामि सदा लिव लाए ॥
He is lovingly attuned to the True Name forever.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਚੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥
Jo This Bhaavai Soee Karasee Jo Sachae Man Bhaaeidhaa ||9||
जो तिसु भावै सोई करसी जो सचे मनि भाइदा ॥९॥
They act in harmony with the Mind of the True Lord. ||9||
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Jaa This Bhaavai Sathiguroo Milaaeae ||
जा तिसु भावै सतिगुरू मिलाए ॥
As it pleases His Will, He unites us with the True Guru.
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
Jaa This Bhaavai Thaa Mann Vasaaeae ||
जा तिसु भावै ता मंनि वसाए ॥
As it pleases His Will, He comes to dwell within the mind.
ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
Aapanai Bhaanai Sadhaa Rang Raathaa Bhaanai Mann Vasaaeidhaa ||10||
आपणै भाणै सदा रंगि राता भाणै मंनि वसाइदा ॥१०॥
As it pleases His Will, He imbues us with His Love; as it pleases His Will, He comes to dwell in the mind. ||10||
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
Manehath Karam Karae So Shheejai ||
मनहठि करम करे सो छीजै ॥
Those who act stubborn-mindedly are destroyed.
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
Bahuthae Bhaekh Karae Nehee Bheejai ||
बहुते भेख करे नही भीजै ॥
Wearing all sorts of religious robes, they do not please the Lord.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
Bikhiaa Raathae Dhukh Kamaavehi Dhukhae Dhukh Samaaeidhaa ||11||
बिखिआ राते दुखु कमावहि दुखे दुखि समाइदा ॥११॥
Tinged by corruption, they earn only pain; they are immersed in pain. ||11||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
Guramukh Hovai S Sukh Kamaaeae ||
गुरमुखि होवै सु सुखु कमाए ॥
One who becomes Gurmukh earns peace.
ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
Maran Jeevan Kee Sojhee Paaeae ||
मरण जीवण की सोझी पाए ॥
He comes to understand death and birth.
ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਜੋ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
Maran Jeevan Jo Sam Kar Jaanai So Maerae Prabh Bhaaeidhaa ||12||
मरणु जीवणु जो सम करि जाणै सो मेरे प्रभ भाइदा ॥१२॥
One who looks alike upon death and birth, is pleasing to my God. ||12||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਹਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
Guramukh Marehi S Hehi Paravaan ||
गुरमुखि मरहि सु हहि परवाणु ॥
The Gurmukh, while remaining dead, is respected and approved.
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
Aavan Jaanaa Sabadh Pashhaan ||
आवण जाणा सबदु पछाणु ॥
He realizes that coming and going are according to God's Will.
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
Marai N Janmai Naa Dhukh Paaeae Man Hee Manehi Samaaeidhaa ||13||
मरै न जमै ना दुखु पाए मन ही मनहि समाइदा ॥१३॥
He does not die, he is not reborn, and he does not suffer in pain; his mind merges in the Mind of God. ||13||
ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Sae Vaddabhaagee Jinee Sathigur Paaeiaa ||
से वडभागी जिनी सतिगुरु पाइआ ॥
Very fortunate are those who find the True Guru.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
Houmai Vichahu Mohu Chukaaeiaa ||
हउमै विचहु मोहु चुकाइआ ॥
They eradicate egotism and attachment from within.
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
Man Niramal Fir Mail N Laagai Dhar Sachai Sobhaa Paaeidhaa ||14||
मनु निरमलु फिरि मैलु न लागै दरि सचै सोभा पाइदा ॥१४॥
Their minds are immaculate, and they are never again stained with filth. They are honored at the Door of the True Court. ||14||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ॥
Aapae Karae Karaaeae Aapae ||
आपे करे कराए आपे ॥
He Himself acts, and inspires all to act.
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥
Aapae Vaekhai Thhaap Outhhaapae ||
आपे वेखै थापि उथापे ॥
He Himself watches over all; He establishes and disestablishes.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
Guramukh Saevaa Maerae Prabh Bhaavai Sach Sun Laekhai Paaeidhaa ||15||
गुरमुखि सेवा मेरे प्रभ भावै सचु सुणि लेखै पाइदा ॥१५॥
The service of the Gurmukh is pleasing to my God; one who listens to the Truth is approved. ||15||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Guramukh Sacho Sach Kamaavai ||
गुरमुखि सचो सचु कमावै ॥
The Gurmukh practices Truth, and only Truth.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
Guramukh Niramal Mail N Laavai ||
गुरमुखि निरमलु मैलु न लावै ॥
The Gurmukh is immaculate; no filth attaches to him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੫॥
Naanak Naam Rathae Veechaaree Naamae Naam Samaaeidhaa ||16||1||15||
नानक नामि रते वीचारी नामे नामि समाइदा ॥१६॥१॥१५॥
O Nanak, those who contemplate the Naam are imbued with it. They merge in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||16||1||15||

ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀ ॥
Aapae Srisatt Hukam Sabh Saajee ||
आपे स्रिसटि हुकमि सभ साजी ॥
He Himself fashioned the Universe, through the Hukam of His Command.
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੀ ॥
Aapae Thhaap Outhhaap Nivaajee ||
आपे थापि उथापि निवाजी ॥
He Himself establishes and disestablishes, and embellishes with grace.
ਆਪੇ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
Aapae Niaao Karae Sabh Saachaa Saachae Saach Milaaeidhaa ||1||
आपे निआउ करे सभु साचा साचे साचि मिलाइदा ॥१॥
The True Lord Himself administers all justice; through Truth, we merge in the True Lord. ||1||
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥
Kaaeiaa Kott Hai Aakaaraa ||
काइआ कोटु है आकारा ॥
The body takes the form of a fortress.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
Maaeiaa Mohu Pasariaa Paasaaraa ||
माइआ मोहु पसरिआ पासारा ॥
Emotional attachment to Maya has expanded throughout its expanse.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਸਮੈ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
Bin Sabadhai Bhasamai Kee Dtaeree Khaehoo Khaeh Ralaaeidhaa ||2||
बिनु सबदै भसमै की ढेरी खेहू खेह रलाइदा ॥२॥
Without the Word of the Shabad, the body is reduced to a pile of ashes; in the end, dust mingles with dust. ||2||
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
Kaaeiaa Kanchan Kott Apaaraa ||
काइआ कंचन कोटु अपारा ॥
The body is the infinite fortress of gold;
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
Jis Vich Raviaa Sabadh Apaaraa ||
जिसु विचि रविआ सबदु अपारा ॥
It is permeated by the Infinite Word of the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
Guramukh Gaavai Sadhaa Gun Saachae Mil Preetham Sukh Paaeidhaa ||3||
गुरमुखि गावै सदा गुण साचे मिलि प्रीतम सुखु पाइदा ॥३॥
The Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord forever; meeting his Beloved, he finds peace. ||3||
ਕਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
Kaaeiaa Har Mandhar Har Aap Savaarae ||
काइआ हरि मंदरु हरि आपि सवारे ॥
The body is the temple of the Lord; the Lord Himself embellishes it.
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਸੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
This Vich Har Jeeo Vasai Muraarae ||
तिसु विचि हरि जीउ वसै मुरारे ॥
The Dear Lord dwells within it.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਣਜਨਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Vanajan Vaapaaree Nadharee Aap Milaaeidhaa ||4||
गुर कै सबदि वणजनि वापारी नदरी आपि मिलाइदा ॥४॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the merchants trade, and in His Grace, the Lord merges them with Himself. ||4||
ਸੋ ਸੂਚਾ ਜਿ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
So Soochaa J Karodhh Nivaarae ||
सो सूचा जि करोधु निवारे ॥
He alone is pure, who eradicates anger.
ਸਬਦੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
Sabadhae Boojhai Aap Savaarae ||
सबदे बूझै आपु सवारे ॥
He realizes the Shabad, and reforms himself.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
Aapae Karae Karaaeae Karathaa Aapae Mann Vasaaeidhaa ||5||
आपे करे कराए करता आपे मंनि वसाइदा ॥५॥
The Creator Himself acts, and inspires all to act; He Himself abides in the mind. ||5||
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥
Niramal Bhagath Hai Niraalee ||
निरमल भगति है निराली ॥
Pure and unique is devotional worship.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
Man Than Dhhovehi Sabadh Veechaaree ||
मनु तनु धोवहि सबदि वीचारी ॥
The mind and body are washed clean, contemplating the Shabad.
