Maaeiaa Mohi Sudhh N Kaaee ||
माइआ मोहि सुधि न काई ॥
In love and attachment to Maya, he has no understanding at all.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Manamukh Andhhae Kishhoo N Soojhai Guramath Naam Pragaasee Hae ||14||
मनमुख अंधे किछू न सूझै गुरमति नामु प्रगासी हे ॥१४॥
The blind, self-willed manmukh sees nothing; through the Guru's Teachings, the Naam is gloriously revealed. ||14||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੂਤੇ ॥
Manamukh Houmai Maaeiaa Soothae ||
मनमुख हउमै माइआ सूते ॥
The manmukhs are asleep in egotism and Maya.
ਅਪਣਾ ਘਰੁ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੂਤੇ ॥
Apanaa Ghar N Samaalehi Anth Vigoothae ||
अपणा घरु न समालहि अंति विगूते ॥
They do not watch over their own homes, and are ruined in the end.
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੈ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
Par Nindhaa Karehi Bahu Chinthaa Jaalai Dhukhae Dhukh Nivaasee Hae ||15||
पर निंदा करहि बहु चिंता जालै दुखे दुखि निवासी हे ॥१५॥
They slander others, and burn in great anxiety; they dwell in pain and suffering. ||15||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
Aapae Karathai Kaar Karaaee ||
आपे करतै कार कराई ॥
The Creator Himself has created the creation.
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
Aapae Guramukh Dhaee Bujhaaee ||
आपे गुरमुखि देइ बुझाई ॥
He blesses the Gurmukh with understanding.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥
Naanak Naam Rathae Man Niramal Naamae Naam Nivaasee Hae ||16||5||
नानक नामि रते मनु निरमलु नामे नामि निवासी हे ॥१६॥५॥
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam - their minds become immaculate; they dwell in the Naam, and only the Naam. ||16||5||

Maaroo, Third Mehl:
ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
Eaeko Saevee Sadhaa Thhir Saachaa ||
एको सेवी सदा थिरु साचा ॥
I serve the One Lord, who is eternal, stable and True.
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਚਾ ॥
Dhoojai Laagaa Sabh Jag Kaachaa ||
दूजै लागा सभु जगु काचा ॥
Attached to duality, the whole world is false.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
Guramathee Sadhaa Sach Saalaahee Saachae Hee Saach Patheejai Hae ||1||
गुरमती सदा सचु सालाही साचे ही साचि पतीजै हे ॥१॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, I praise the True Lord forever, pleased with the Truest of the True. ||1||
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
Thaerae Gun Bahuthae Mai Eaek N Jaathaa ||
तेरे गुण बहुते मै एकु न जाता ॥
Your Glorious Virtues are so many, Lord; I do not know even one.
ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ॥
Aapae Laae Leae Jagajeevan Dhaathaa ||
आपे लाइ लए जगजीवनु दाता ॥
The Life of the world, the Great Giver, attaches us to himself.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Aapae Bakhasae Dhae Vaddiaaee Guramath Eihu Man Bheejai Hae ||2||
आपे बखसे दे वडिआई गुरमति इहु मनु भीजै हे ॥२॥
He Himself forgives, and bestows glorious greatness. Following the Guru's Teachings, this mind is delighted. ||2||
ਮਾਇਆ ਲਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
Maaeiaa Lehar Sabadh Nivaaree ||
माइआ लहरि सबदि निवारी ॥
The Word of the Shabad has subdued the waves of Maya.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
Eihu Man Niramal Houmai Maaree ||
इहु मनु निरमलु हउमै मारी ॥
Egotism has been conquered, and this mind has become immaculate.
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Sehajae Gun Gaavai Rang Raathaa Rasanaa Raam Raveejai Hae ||3||
सहजे गुण गावै रंगि राता रसना रामु रवीजै हे ॥३॥
I intuitively sing His Glorious Praises, imbued with the Lord's Love. My tongue chants and savors the Lord's Name. ||3||
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥
Maeree Maeree Karath Vihaanee ||
मेरी मेरी करत विहाणी ॥
Crying out, ""Mine, mine!"" he spends his life.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਫਿਰੈ ਇਆਣੀ ॥
Manamukh N Boojhai Firai Eiaanee ||
मनमुखि न बूझै फिरै इआणी ॥
The self-willed manmukh does not understand; he wanders around in ignorance.
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਆਰਜਾ ਛੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Jamakaal Gharree Muhath Nihaalae Anadhin Aarajaa Shheejai Hae ||4||
जमकालु घड़ी मुहतु निहाले अनदिनु आरजा छीजै हे ॥४॥
The Messenger of Death watches over him every moment, every instant; night and day, his life is wasting away. ||4||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
Anthar Lobh Karai Nehee Boojhai ||
अंतरि लोभु करै नही बूझै ॥
He practices greed within, and does not understand.
ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
Sir Oopar Jamakaal N Soojhai ||
सिर ऊपरि जमकालु न सूझै ॥
He does not see the Messenger of Death hovering over his head.
ਐਥੈ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਆਇਆ ਅੰਤਕਾਲਿ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
Aithhai Kamaanaa S Agai Aaeiaa Anthakaal Kiaa Keejai Hae ||5||
ऐथै कमाणा सु अगै आइआ अंतकालि किआ कीजै हे ॥५॥
Whatever one does in this world, will come to face him in the hereafter; what can he do at that very last moment? ||5||
ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
Jo Sach Laagae Thin Saachee Soe ||
जो सचि लागे तिन साची सोइ ॥
Those who are attached to the Truth are true.
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰੋਇ ॥
Dhoojai Laagae Manamukh Roe ||
दूजै लागे मनमुखि रोइ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs, attached to duality, weep and wail.
ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Dhuhaa Siriaa Kaa Khasam Hai Aapae Aapae Gun Mehi Bheejai Hae ||6||
दुहा सिरिआ का खसमु है आपे आपे गुण महि भीजै हे ॥६॥
He is the Lord and Master of both worlds; He Himself delights in virtue. ||6||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Sadhaa Jan Sohai ||
गुर कै सबदि सदा जनु सोहै ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, His humble servant is exalted forever.
ਨਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥
Naam Rasaaein Eihu Man Mohai ||
नाम रसाइणि इहु मनु मोहै ॥
This mind is enticed by the Naam, the source of nectar.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
Maaeiaa Moh Mail Pathang N Laagai Guramathee Har Naam Bheejai Hae ||7||
माइआ मोह मैलु पतंगु न लागै गुरमती हरि नामि भीजै हे ॥७॥
It is not stained at all by the dirt of attachment to Maya; through the Guru's Teachings, it is pleased and saturated with the Lord's Name. ||7||
ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Sabhanaa Vich Varathai Eik Soee ||
सभना विचि वरतै इकु सोई ॥
The One Lord is contained within all.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Paragatt Hoee ||
गुर परसादी परगटु होई ॥
By Guru's Grace, He is revealed.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਇ ਸਾਚੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Houmai Maar Sadhaa Sukh Paaeiaa Naae Saachai Anmrith Peejai Hae ||8||
हउमै मारि सदा सुखु पाइआ नाइ साचै अम्रितु पीजै हे ॥८॥
One who subdues his ego, finds lasting peace; he drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name. ||8||
ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
Kilabikh Dhookh Nivaaranehaaraa ||
किलबिख दूख निवारणहारा ॥
God is the Destroyer of sin and pain.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
Guramukh Saeviaa Sabadh Veechaaraa ||
गुरमुखि सेविआ सबदि वीचारा ॥
The Gurmukh serves Him, and contemplates the Word of the Shabad.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Sabh Kishh Aapae Aap Varathai Guramukh Than Man Bheejai Hae ||9||
सभु किछु आपे आपि वरतै गुरमुखि तनु मनु भीजै हे ॥९॥
He Himself is pervading everything. The Gurmukh's body and mind are saturated and pleased. ||9||
ਮਾਇਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
Maaeiaa Agan Jalai Sansaarae ||
माइआ अगनि जलै संसारे ॥
The world is burning in the fire of Maya.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
Guramukh Nivaarai Sabadh Veechaarae ||
गुरमुखि निवारै सबदि वीचारे ॥
The Gurmukh extinguishes this fire, by contemplating the Shabad.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Anthar Saanth Sadhaa Sukh Paaeiaa Guramathee Naam Leejai Hae ||10||
अंतरि सांति सदा सुखु पाइआ गुरमती नामु लीजै हे ॥१०॥
Deep within are peace and tranquility, and lasting peace is obtained. Following the Guru's Teachings, one is blessed with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||10||
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Eindhr Eindhraasan Baithae Jam Kaa Bho Paavehi ||
इंद्र इंद्रासणि बैठे जम का भउ पावहि ॥
Even Indra, seated upon his throne, is caught in the fear of death.
ਜਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jam N Shhoddai Bahu Karam Kamaavehi ||
जमु न छोडै बहु करम कमावहि ॥
The Messenger of Death will not spare them, even though they try all sorts of things.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਪੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
Sathigur Bhaettai Thaa Mukath Paaeeai Har Har Rasanaa Peejai Hae ||11||
सतिगुरु भेटै ता मुकति पाईऐ हरि हरि रसना पीजै हे ॥११॥
When one meets with the True Guru, one is liberated, drinking in and savoring the sublime essence of the Lord, Har, Har. ||11||
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Manamukh Anthar Bhagath N Hoee ||
मनमुखि अंतरि भगति न होई ॥
There is no devotion within the self-willed manmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
Guramukh Bhagath Saanth Sukh Hoee ||
गुरमुखि भगति सांति सुखु होई ॥
Through devotional worship, the Gurmukh obtains peace and tranquility.
ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਵਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Pavithr Paavan Sadhaa Hai Baanee Guramath Anthar Bheejai Hae ||12||
पवित्र पावन सदा है बाणी गुरमति अंतरु भीजै हे ॥१२॥
Forever pure and sanctified is the Word of the Guru's Bani; following the Guru's Teachings, one's inner being is drenched in it. ||12||
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
Brehamaa Bisan Mehaes Veechaaree ||
ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु वीचारी ॥
I have considered Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਧਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ॥
Thrai Gun Badhhak Mukath Niraaree ||
त्रै गुण बधक मुकति निरारी ॥
They are bound by the three qualities - the three gunas; they are far away from liberation.
