जन नानक कै वलि होआ मेरा सुआमी हरि सजण पुरखु सुजानु ॥
My Lord and Master is on the side of servant Nanak. The All-powerful and All-knowing Lord God is my Best Friend.
ਪਉਦੀ ਭਿਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਸਭਿ ਆਇ ਪਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਲਾਹਿਓਨੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਿਅਹੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੦॥
Poudhee Bhith Dhaekh Kai Sabh Aae Peae Sathigur Kee Pairee Laahioun Sabhanaa Kiahu Manahu Gumaan ||10||
पउदी भिति देखि कै सभि आइ पए सतिगुर की पैरी लाहिओनु सभना किअहु मनहु गुमानु ॥१०॥
Seeing the food being distributed, everyone came and fell at the feet of the True Guru, who cleansed the minds of all of their egotistical pride. ||10||

Shalok, First Mehl:
ਕੋਈ ਵਾਹੇ ਕੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ਖਲਿਹਾਨਿ ॥
Koee Vaahae Ko Lunai Ko Paaeae Khalihaan ||
कोई वाहे को लुणै को पाए खलिहानि ॥
One plants the seed, another harvests the crop, and still another beats the grain from the chaff.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਇ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੧॥

नानक एव न जापई कोई खाइ निदानि ॥१॥
O Nanak, it is not known, who will ultimately eat the grain. ||1||

He alone is carried across, within whose mind the Lord abides.

पारब्रहमि दइआलि सागरु तारिआ ॥
The Merciful Supreme Lord God has carried me across the world-ocean.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
Gur Poorai Miharavaan Bharam Bho Maariaa ||
गुरि पूरै मिहरवानि भरमु भउ मारिआ ॥
The compassionate perfect Guru has eradicated my doubts and fears.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਕਰਾਲੁ ਦੂਤ ਸਭਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
Kaam Krodhh Bikaraal Dhooth Sabh Haariaa ||
काम क्रोधु बिकरालु दूत सभि हारिआ ॥
Unsatisfied sexual desire and unresolved anger, the horrible demons, have been totally destroyed.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥
Anmrith Naam Nidhhaan Kanth Our Dhhaariaa ||
अम्रित नामु निधानु कंठि उरि धारिआ ॥
I have enshrined the treasure of the Ambrosial Naam within my throat and heart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੧॥

नानक साधू संगि जनमु मरणु सवारिआ ॥११॥
O Nanak, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, my birth and death have been adorned and redeemed. ||11||

ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਕੂੜੇ ਕਹਣ ਕਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Jinhee Naam Visaariaa Koorrae Kehan Kehannih ||
जिन्ही नामु विसारिआ कूड़े कहण कहंन्हि ॥
Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are said to be false.
ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਤਿਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Panch Chor Thinaa Ghar Muhanih Houmai Andhar Sannih ||
पंच चोर तिना घरु मुहन्हि हउमै अंदरि संन्हि ॥
The five thieves plunder their homes, and egotism breaks in.
ਸਾਕਤ ਮੁਠੇ ਦੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Saakath Muthae Dhuramathee Har Ras N Jaanannih ||
साकत मुठे दुरमती हरि रसु न जाणंन्हि ॥
The faithless cynics are defrauded by their own evil-mindedness; they do not know the sublime essence of the Lord.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਲੁਟਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਸਿਉ ਰਚਹਿ ਰਚੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Jinhee Anmrith Bharam Luttaaeiaa Bikh Sio Rachehi Rachannih ||
जिन्ही अम्रितु भरमि लुटाइआ बिखु सिउ रचहि रचंन्हि ॥
Those who lose the Ambrosial Nectar through doubt, remain engrossed and entangled in corruption.
ਦੁਸਟਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ਕਰੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Dhusattaa Saethee Pireharree Jan Sio Vaadh Karannih ||
दुसटा सेती पिरहड़ी जन सिउ वादु करंन्हि ॥
They make friends with the wicked, and argue with the humble servants of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਜਮਿ ਬਧੇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
Naanak Saakath Narak Mehi Jam Badhhae Dhukh Sehannih ||
नानक साकत नरक महि जमि बधे दुख सहंन्हि ॥
O Nanak, the faithless cynics are bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death, and suffer agony in hell.
ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਜਿਵ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਵੈ ਰਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧॥
Paeiai Kirath Kamaavadhae Jiv Raakhehi Thivai Rehannih ||1||
पइऐ किरति कमावदे जिव राखहि तिवै रहंन्हि ॥१॥
They act according to the karma of the actions they committed before; as the Lord keeps them, so do they live. ||1||

ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਾਣੁ ਨਿਤਾਣੇ ਤਿਸੁ ॥

जिन्ही सतिगुरु सेविआ ताणु निताणे तिसु ॥
Those who serve the True Guru, are transformed from powerless into powerful.
ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
Saas Giraas Sadhaa Man Vasai Jam Johi N Sakai This ||
सासि गिरासि सदा मनि वसै जमु जोहि न सकै तिसु ॥
With every breath and morsel of food, the Lord abides in their minds forever, and the Messenger of Death cannot even see them.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਕਵਲਾ ਸੇਵਕਿ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
Hiradhai Har Har Naam Ras Kavalaa Saevak This ||
हिरदै हरि हरि नाम रसु कवला सेवकि तिसु ॥
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, fills their hearts, and Maya is their servant.
ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
Har Dhaasaa Kaa Dhaas Hoe Param Padhaarathh This ||
हरि दासा का दासु होइ परम पदारथु तिसु ॥
One who becomes the slave of the Lord's slaves, obtains the greatest treasure.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਤਿਸੁ ॥
Naanak Man Than Jis Prabh Vasai Ho Sadh Kurabaanai This ||
नानक मनि तनि जिसु प्रभु वसै हउ सद कुरबाणै तिसु ॥
O Nanak, I am forever a sacrifice to that one, within whose mind and body God dwells.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਰਸੁ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੨॥
Jinh Ko Poorab Likhiaa Ras Santh Janaa Sio This ||2||
जिन्ह कउ पूरबि लिखिआ रसु संत जना सिउ तिसु ॥२॥
One who has such pre-ordained destiny, he alone is in love with the humble Saints. ||2||

जो बोले पूरा सतिगुरू सो परमेसरि सुणिआ ॥
Whatever the Perfect True Guru says, the Transcendent Lord hears.
ਸੋਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਗਤ ਮਹਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਣਿਆ ॥
Soee Varathiaa Jagath Mehi Ghatt Ghatt Mukh Bhaniaa ||
सोई वरतिआ जगत महि घटि घटि मुखि भणिआ ॥
It pervades and permeates the whole world, and it is on the mouth of each and every being.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੈ ਨਹ ਜਾਹੀ ਗਣੀਆ ॥
Bahuth Vaddiaaeeaa Saahibai Neh Jaahee Ganeeaa ||
बहुतु वडिआईआ साहिबै नह जाही गणीआ ॥
So numerous are the great glories of the Lord, they cannot even be counted.
ਸਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਅਨਦੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਿ ਸਚੀ ਗੁਰ ਮਣੀਆ ॥
Sach Sehaj Anadh Sathiguroo Paas Sachee Gur Maneeaa ||
सचु सहजु अनदु सतिगुरू पासि सची गुर मणीआ ॥
Truth, poise and bliss rest in the True Guru; the Guru bestows the jewel of Truth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਉ ਬਣਿਆ ॥੧੨॥
Naanak Santh Savaarae Paarabreham Sachae Jio Baniaa ||12||
नानक संत सवारे पारब्रहमि सचे जिउ बणिआ ॥१२॥
O Nanak, the Supreme Lord God embellishes the Saints, who become like the True Lord. ||12||

अपणा आपु न पछाणई हरि प्रभु जाता दूरि ॥
He does not understand himself; he believes the Lord God to be far away.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
Gur Kee Saevaa Visaree Kio Man Rehai Hajoor ||
गुर की सेवा विसरी किउ मनु रहै हजूरि ॥
He forgets to serve the Guru; how can his mind remain in the Lord's Presence?
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਕੂਰਿ ॥
Manamukh Janam Gavaaeiaa Jhoothai Laalach Koor ||
मनमुखि जनमु गवाइआ झूठै लालचि कूरि ॥
The self-willed manmukh wastes away his life in worthless greed and falsehood.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥
Naanak Bakhas Milaaeian Sachai Sabadh Hadhoor ||1||
नानक बखसि मिलाइअनु सचै सबदि हदूरि ॥१॥
O Nanak, the Lord forgives, and blends them with Himself; through the True Word of the Shabad, He is ever-present. ||1||

हरि प्रभु सचा सोहिला गुरमुखि नामु गोविंदु ॥
True is the Praise of the Lord God; the Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord of the Universe.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥
Anadhin Naam Salaahanaa Har Japiaa Man Aanandh ||
अनदिनु नामु सलाहणा हरि जपिआ मनि आनंदु ॥
Praising the Naam night and day, and meditating on the Lord, the mind becomes blissful.
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥
Vaddabhaagee Har Paaeiaa Pooran Paramaanandh ||
वडभागी हरि पाइआ पूरनु परमानंदु ॥
By great good fortune, I have found the Lord, the perfect embodiment of supreme bliss.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ॥੨॥
Jan Naanak Naam Salaahiaa Bahurr N Man Than Bhang ||2||
जन नानक नामु सलाहिआ बहुड़ि न मनि तनि भंगु ॥२॥
Servant Nanak praises the Naam; his mind and body shall never again be shattered. ||2||
