ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
Guramukh Viralaa Cheenai Koee ||
गुरमुखि विरला चीनै कोई ॥
Only a few, as Gurmukh, remembered the Lord.
ਦੁਇ ਪਗ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਰੇ ਧਰਣੀਧਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਿਥਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Dhue Pag Dhharam Dhharae Dhharaneedhhar Guramukh Saach Thithhaaee Hae ||8||
दुइ पग धरमु धरे धरणीधर गुरमुखि साचु तिथाई हे ॥८॥
Dharmic faith, which upholds and supports the earth, had only two feet; Truth was revealed to the Gurmukhs. ||8||
ਰਾਜੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥
Raajae Dhharam Karehi Parathhaaeae ||
राजे धरमु करहि परथाए ॥
The kings acted righteously only out of self-interest.
ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
Aasaa Bandhhae Dhaan Karaaeae ||
आसा बंधे दानु कराए ॥
Tied to hopes of reward, they gave to charities.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Raam Naam Bin Mukath N Hoee Thhaakae Karam Kamaaee Hae ||9||
राम नाम बिनु मुकति न होई थाके करम कमाई हे ॥९॥
Without the Lord's Name, liberation did not come, although they grew weary of performing rituals. ||9||
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੰਗਾਹੀ ॥
Karam Dhharam Kar Mukath Mangaahee ||
करम धरम करि मुकति मंगाही ॥
Practicing religious rituals, they sought liberation,
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥
Mukath Padhaarathh Sabadh Salaahee ||
मुकति पदारथु सबदि सलाही ॥
But the treasure of liberation comes only by praising the Shabad.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Bin Gur Sabadhai Mukath N Hoee Parapanch Kar Bharamaaee Hae ||10||
बिनु गुर सबदै मुकति न होई परपंचु करि भरमाई हे ॥१०॥
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, liberation is not obtained; practicing hypocrisy, they wander around confused. ||10||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
Maaeiaa Mamathaa Shhoddee N Jaaee ||
माइआ ममता छोडी न जाई ॥
Love and attachment to Maya cannot be abandoned.
ਸੇ ਛੂਟੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
Sae Shhoottae Sach Kaar Kamaaee ||
से छूटे सचु कार कमाई ॥
They alone find release, who practice deeds of Truth.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
Ahinis Bhagath Rathae Veechaaree Thaakur Sio Ban Aaee Hae ||11||
अहिनिसि भगति रते वीचारी ठाकुर सिउ बणि आई हे ॥११॥
Day and night, the devotees remain imbued with contemplative meditation; they become just like their Lord and Master. ||11||
ਇਕਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥
Eik Jap Thap Kar Kar Theerathh Naavehi ||
इकि जप तप करि करि तीरथ नावहि ॥
Some chant and practice intensive meditation, and take cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jio Thudhh Bhaavai Thivai Chalaavehi ||
जिउ तुधु भावै तिवै चलावहि ॥
They walk as You will them to walk.
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਪਤੀਜੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Hath Nigrehi Apatheej N Bheejai Bin Har Gur Kin Path Paaee Hae ||12||
हठि निग्रहि अपतीजु न भीजै बिनु हरि गुर किनि पति पाई हे ॥१२॥
By stubborn rituals of self-suppression, the Lord is not pleased. No one has ever obtained honor, without the Lord, without the Guru. ||12||
ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ ॥
Kalee Kaal Mehi Eik Kal Raakhee ||
कली काल महि इक कल राखी ॥
In the Iron Age, the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, only one power remains.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥
Bin Gur Poorae Kinai N Bhaakhee ||
बिनु गुर पूरे किनै न भाखी ॥
Without the Perfect Guru, no one has even described it.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
Manamukh Koorr Varathai Varathaaraa Bin Sathigur Bharam N Jaaee Hae ||13||
मनमुखि कूड़ु वरतै वरतारा बिनु सतिगुर भरमु न जाई हे ॥१३॥
The self-willed manmukhs have staged the show of falsehood. Without the True Guru, doubt does not depart. ||13||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ॥
Sathigur Vaeparavaahu Sirandhaa ||
सतिगुरु वेपरवाहु सिरंदा ॥
The True Guru is the Creator Lord, independent and carefree.
ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਛੰਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ॥
Naa Jam Kaan N Shhandhaa Bandhaa ||
ना जम काणि न छंदा बंदा ॥
He does not fear death, and He is not dependent on mortal men.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Jo This Saevae So Abinaasee Naa This Kaal Santhaaee Hae ||14||
जो तिसु सेवे सो अबिनासी ना तिसु कालु संताई हे ॥१४॥
Whoever serves Him becomes immortal and imperishable, and will not be tortured by death. ||14||
ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥
Gur Mehi Aap Rakhiaa Karathaarae ||
गुर महि आपु रखिआ करतारे ॥
The Creator Lord has enshrined Himself within the Guru.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
Guramukh Kott Asankh Oudhhaarae ||
गुरमुखि कोटि असंख उधारे ॥
The Gurmukh saves countless millions.
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
Sarab Jeeaa Jagajeevan Dhaathaa Nirabho Mail N Kaaee Hae ||15||
सरब जीआ जगजीवनु दाता निरभउ मैलु न काई हे ॥१५॥
The Life of the World is the Great Giver of all beings. The Fearless Lord has no filth at all. ||15||
ਸਗਲੇ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥
Sagalae Jaachehi Gur Bhanddaaree ||
सगले जाचहि गुर भंडारी ॥
Everyone begs from the Guru, God's Treasurer.
ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥
Aap Niranjan Alakh Apaaree ||
आपि निरंजनु अलख अपारी ॥
He Himself is the immaculate, unknowable, infinite Lord.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੪॥
Naanak Saach Kehai Prabh Jaachai Mai Dheejai Saach Rajaaee Hae ||16||4||
नानकु साचु कहै प्रभ जाचै मै दीजै साचु रजाई हे ॥१६॥४॥
Nanak speaks the Truth; he begs from God. Please bless me with the Truth, by Your Will. ||16||4||

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਸਾਚੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Saachai Maelae Sabadh Milaaeae ||
साचै मेले सबदि मिलाए ॥
The True Lord unites with those who are united with the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
Jaa This Bhaanaa Sehaj Samaaeae ||
जा तिसु भाणा सहजि समाए ॥
When it pleases Him, we intuitively merge with Him.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
Thribhavan Joth Dhharee Paramaesar Avar N Dhoojaa Bhaaee Hae ||1||
त्रिभवण जोति धरी परमेसरि अवरु न दूजा भाई हे ॥१॥
The Light of the Transcendent Lord pervades the three worlds; there is no other at all, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
Jis Kae Chaakar This Kee Saevaa ||
जिस के चाकर तिस की सेवा ॥
I am His servant; I serve Him.
ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥
Sabadh Patheejai Alakh Abhaevaa ||
सबदि पतीजै अलख अभेवा ॥
He is unknowable and mysterious; He is pleased by the Shabad.
ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Bhagathaa Kaa Gunakaaree Karathaa Bakhas Leae Vaddiaaee Hae ||2||
भगता का गुणकारी करता बखसि लए वडिआई हे ॥२॥
The Creator is the Benefactor of His devotees. He forgives them - such is His greatness. ||2||
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
Dhaedhae Thott N Aavai Saachae ||
देदे तोटि न आवै साचे ॥
The True Lord gives and gives; His blessings never run short.
ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਉਦੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥
Lai Lai Mukar Poudhae Kaachae ||
लै लै मुकरि पउदे काचे ॥
The false ones receive, and then deny having received.
ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨ ਰੀਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Mool N Boojhehi Saach N Reejhehi Dhoojai Bharam Bhulaaee Hae ||3||
मूलु न बूझहि साचि न रीझहि दूजै भरमि भुलाई हे ॥३॥
They do not understand their origins, they are not pleased with the Truth, and so they wander in duality and doubt. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
Guramukh Jaag Rehae Dhin Raathee ||
गुरमुखि जागि रहे दिन राती ॥
The Gurmukhs remain awake and aware, day and night.
ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
Saachae Kee Liv Guramath Jaathee ||
साचे की लिव गुरमति जाती ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, they know the Love of the True Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਸੇ ਲੂਟੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Manamukh Soe Rehae Sae Loottae Guramukh Saabath Bhaaee Hae ||4||
मनमुख सोइ रहे से लूटे गुरमुखि साबतु भाई हे ॥४॥
The self-willed manmukhs remain asleep, and are plundered. The Gurmukhs remain safe and sound, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||
ਕੂੜੇ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
Koorrae Aavai Koorrae Jaavai ||
कूड़े आवै कूड़े जावै ॥
The false come, and the false go;
ਕੂੜੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Koorrae Raathee Koorr Kamaavai ||
कूड़े राती कूड़ु कमावै ॥
Imbued with falsehood, they practice only falsehood.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
Sabadh Milae Sae Dharageh Paidhhae Guramukh Surath Samaaee Hae ||5||
सबदि मिले से दरगह पैधे गुरमुखि सुरति समाई हे ॥५॥
Those who are imbued with the Shabad are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord; the Gurmukhs focus their consciousness on Him. ||5||
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਠਗੀ ਠਗਵਾੜੀ ॥
Koorr Muthee Thagee Thagavaarree ||
कूड़ि मुठी ठगी ठगवाड़ी ॥
The false are cheated, and robbed by the robbers.
ਜਿਉ ਵਾੜੀ ਓਜਾੜਿ ਉਜਾੜੀ ॥
Jio Vaarree Oujaarr Oujaarree ||
जिउ वाड़ी ओजाड़ि उजाड़ी ॥
The garden is laid waste, like the rough wilderness.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਦਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Naam Binaa Kishh Saadh N Laagai Har Bisariai Dhukh Paaee Hae ||6||
नाम बिना किछु सादि न लागै हरि बिसरिऐ दुखु पाई हे ॥६॥
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, nothing tastes sweet; forgetting the Lord, they suffer in sorrow. ||6||
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਘਾਈ ॥
Bhojan Saach Milai Aaghaaee ||
भोजनु साचु मिलै आघाई ॥
Receiving the food of Truth, one is satisfied.
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
Naam Rathan Saachee Vaddiaaee ||
नाम रतनु साची वडिआई ॥
True is the glorious greatness of the jewel of the Name.
ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
Cheenai Aap Pashhaanai Soee Jothee Joth Milaaee Hae ||7||
चीनै आपु पछाणै सोई जोती जोति मिलाई हे ॥७॥
One who understands his own self, realizes the Lord. His light merges into the Light. ||7||
