ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
Chaar Padhaarathh Lai Jag Aaeiaa ||
चारि पदारथ लै जगि आइआ ॥
He came into the world to obtain the four great blessings.
ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Siv Sakathee Ghar Vaasaa Paaeiaa ||
सिव सकती घरि वासा पाइआ ॥
He came to dwell in the home of the Shiva and Shakti, energy and matter.
ਏਕੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਹਾਰੇ ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Eaek Visaarae Thaa Pirr Haarae Andhhulai Naam Visaaraa Hae ||6||
एकु विसारे ता पिड़ हारे अंधुलै नामु विसारा हे ॥६॥
But he forgot the One Lord, and he has lost the game. The blind person forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||
ਬਾਲਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਬਾਲਕ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥
Baalak Marai Baalak Kee Leelaa ||
बालकु मरै बालक की लीला ॥
The child dies in his childish games.
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਬਾਲੁ ਰੰਗੀਲਾ ॥
Kehi Kehi Rovehi Baal Rangeelaa ||
कहि कहि रोवहि बालु रंगीला ॥
They cry and mourn, saying that he was such a playful child.
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਾ ਸੋ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਲੀਆ ਭੂਲਾ ਰੋਵਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
Jis Kaa Saa So Thin Hee Leeaa Bhoolaa Rovanehaaraa Hae ||7||
जिस का सा सो तिन ही लीआ भूला रोवणहारा हे ॥७॥
The Lord who owns him has taken him back. Those who weep and mourn are mistaken. ||7||
ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
Bhar Joban Mar Jaahi K Keejai ||
भरि जोबनि मरि जाहि कि कीजै ॥
What can they do, if he dies in his youth?
ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਰੋਵੀਜੈ ॥
Maeraa Maeraa Kar Roveejai ||
मेरा मेरा करि रोवीजै ॥
They cry out, ""His is mine, he is mine!""
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਰੋਇ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Maaeiaa Kaaran Roe Vigoochehi Dhhrig Jeevan Sansaaraa Hae ||8||
माइआ कारणि रोइ विगूचहि ध्रिगु जीवणु संसारा हे ॥८॥
They cry for the sake of Maya, and are ruined; their lives in this world are cursed. ||8||
ਕਾਲੀ ਹੂ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਉਲੇ ਆਏ ॥
Kaalee Hoo Fun Dhhoulae Aaeae ||
काली हू फुनि धउले आए ॥
Their black hair eventually turns grey.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗਥੁ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
Vin Naavai Gathh Gaeiaa Gavaaeae ||
विणु नावै गथु गइआ गवाए ॥
Without the Name, they lose their wealth, and then leave.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਰੋਇ ਪੂਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Dhuramath Andhhulaa Binas Binaasai Moothae Roe Pookaaraa Hae ||9||
दुरमति अंधुला बिनसि बिनासै मूठे रोइ पूकारा हे ॥९॥
They are evil-minded and blind - they are totally ruined; they are plundered, and cry out in pain. ||9||
ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਨ ਰੋਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
Aap Veechaar N Rovai Koee ||
आपु वीचारि न रोवै कोई ॥
One who understands himself, does not cry.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
Sathigur Milai Th Sojhee Hoee ||
सतिगुरु मिलै त सोझी होई ॥
When he meets the True Guru, then he understands.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਨ ਖੂਲਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Bin Gur Bajar Kapaatt N Khoolehi Sabadh Milai Nisathaaraa Hae ||10||
बिनु गुर बजर कपाट न खूलहि सबदि मिलै निसतारा हे ॥१०॥
Without the Guru, the heavy, hard doors are not opened. Obtaining the Word of the Shabad, one is emancipated. ||10||
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
Biradhh Bhaeiaa Than Shheejai Dhaehee ||
बिरधि भइआ तनु छीजै देही ॥
The body grows old, and is beaten out of shape.
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥
Raam N Japee Anth Sanaehee ||
रामु न जपई अंति सनेही ॥
But he does not meditate on the Lord, His only friend, even at the end.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
Naam Visaar Chalai Muhi Kaalai Dharageh Jhooth Khuaaraa Hae ||11||
नामु विसारि चलै मुहि कालै दरगह झूठु खुआरा हे ॥११॥
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he departs with his face blackened. The false are humiliated in the Court of the Lord. ||11||
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੋ ॥
Naam Visaar Chalai Koorriaaro ||
नामु विसारि चलै कूड़िआरो ॥
Forgetting the Naam, the false ones depart.
ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਪੜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਰੋ ॥
Aavath Jaath Parrai Sir Shhaaro ||
आवत जात पड़ै सिरि छारो ॥
Coming and going, dust falls on their heads.
ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Saahurarrai Ghar Vaas N Paaeae Paeeearrai Sir Maaraa Hae ||12||
साहुरड़ै घरि वासु न पाए पेईअड़ै सिरि मारा हे ॥१२॥
The soul-bride finds no home in her in-laws' home, the world hereafter; she suffers in agony in this world of her parents' home. ||12||
ਖਾਜੈ ਪੈਝੈ ਰਲੀ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
Khaajai Paijhai Ralee Kareejai ||
खाजै पैझै रली करीजै ॥
She eats, dresses and plays joyfully,
ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਭਗਤੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
Bin Abh Bhagathee Baadh Mareejai ||
बिनु अभ भगती बादि मरीजै ॥
But without loving devotional worship of the Lord, she dies uselessly.
ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
Sar Apasar Kee Saar N Jaanai Jam Maarae Kiaa Chaaraa Hae ||13||
सर अपसर की सार न जाणै जमु मारे किआ चारा हे ॥१३॥
One who does not distinguish between good and evil, is beaten by the Messenger of Death; how can anyone escape this? ||13||
ਪਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
Paravirathee Naravirath Pashhaanai ||
परविरती नरविरति पछाणै ॥
One who realizes what he has to possess, and what he has to abandon,
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Gur Kai Sang Sabadh Ghar Jaanai ||
गुर कै संगि सबदि घरु जाणै ॥
Associating with the Guru, comes to know the Word of the Shabad, within the home of his own self.
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਖਰਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Kis Hee Mandhaa Aakh N Chalai Sach Kharaa Sachiaaraa Hae ||14||
किस ही मंदा आखि न चलै सचि खरा सचिआरा हे ॥१४॥
Do not call anyone else bad; follow this way of life. Those who are true are judged to be genuine by the True Lord. ||14||
ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਦਰਿ ਸਿਝੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Saach Binaa Dhar Sijhai N Koee ||
साच बिना दरि सिझै न कोई ॥
Without Truth, no one succeeds in the Court of the Lord.
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
Saach Sabadh Paijhai Path Hoee ||
साच सबदि पैझै पति होई ॥
Through the True Shabad, one is robed in honor.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
Aapae Bakhas Leae This Bhaavai Houmai Garab Nivaaraa Hae ||15||
आपे बखसि लए तिसु भावै हउमै गरबु निवारा हे ॥१५॥
He forgives those with whom He is pleased; they silence their egotism and pride. ||15||
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
Gur Kirapaa Thae Hukam Pashhaanai ||
गुर किरपा ते हुकमु पछाणै ॥
One who realizes the Hukam of God's Command, by the Grace of the Guru,
ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Jugeh Juganthar Kee Bidhh Jaanai ||
जुगह जुगंतर की बिधि जाणै ॥
Comes to know the lifestyle of the ages.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੭॥
Naanak Naam Japahu Thar Thaaree Sach Thaarae Thaaranehaaraa Hae ||16||1||7||
नानक नामु जपहु तरु तारी सचु तारे तारणहारा हे ॥१६॥१॥७॥
O Nanak, chant the Naam, and cross over to the other side. The True Lord will carry you across. ||16||1||7||

ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

हरि सा मीतु नाही मै कोई ॥
I have no other friend like the Lord.
ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ॥
Jin Than Man Dheeaa Surath Samoee ||
जिनि तनु मनु दीआ सुरति समोई ॥
He gave me body and mind, and infused consciousness into my being.
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
Sarab Jeeaa Prathipaal Samaalae So Anthar Dhaanaa Beenaa Hae ||1||
सरब जीआ प्रतिपालि समाले सो अंतरि दाना बीना हे ॥१॥
He cherishes and cares for all beings; He is deep within, the wise, all-knowing Lord. ||1||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Gur Saravar Ham Hans Piaarae ||
गुरु सरवरु हम हंस पिआरे ॥
The Guru is the sacred pool, and I am His beloved swan.
ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
Saagar Mehi Rathan Laal Bahu Saarae ||
सागर महि रतन लाल बहु सारे ॥
In the ocean, there are so many jewels and rubies.
ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Mothee Maanak Heeraa Har Jas Gaavath Man Than Bheenaa Hae ||2||
मोती माणक हीरा हरि जसु गावत मनु तनु भीना हे ॥२॥
The Lord's Praises are pearls, gems and diamonds. Singing His Praises, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
Har Agam Agaahu Agaadhh Niraalaa ||
हरि अगम अगाहु अगाधि निराला ॥
The Lord is inaccessible, inscrutable, unfathomable and unattached.
ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥
Har Anth N Paaeeai Gur Gopaalaa ||
हरि अंतु न पाईऐ गुर गोपाला ॥
The Lord's limits cannot be found; the Guru is the Lord of the World.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Sathigur Math Thaarae Thaaranehaaraa Mael Leae Rang Leenaa Hae ||3||
सतिगुर मति तारे तारणहारा मेलि लए रंगि लीना हे ॥३॥
Through the Teachings of the True Guru, the Lord carries us across to the other side. He unites in His Union those who are colored by His Love. ||3||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ॥
Sathigur Baajhahu Mukath Kinaehee ||
सतिगुर बाझहु मुकति किनेही ॥
Without the True Guru, how can anyone be liberated?
ਓਹੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥
Ouhu Aadh Jugaadhee Raam Sanaehee ||
ओहु आदि जुगादी राम सनेही ॥
He has been the Friend of the Lord, from the very beginning of time, and all throughout the ages.
ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Dharageh Mukath Karae Kar Kirapaa Bakhasae Avagun Keenaa Hae ||4||
दरगह मुकति करे करि किरपा बखसे अवगुण कीना हे ॥४॥
By His Grace, He grants liberation in His Court; He forgives them for their sins. ||4||
