Nanak: chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; the Lord, the Uniter, shall unite you with Himself. ||17||3||9||

ਘਰਿ ਰਹੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੁਗਧ ਇਆਨੇ ॥

घरि रहु रे मन मुगध इआने ॥
Remain in your own home, O my foolish and ignorant mind.
ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥
Raam Japahu Antharagath Dhhiaanae ||
रामु जपहु अंतरगति धिआने ॥
Meditate on the Lord - concentrate deep within your being and meditate on Him.
ਲਾਲਚ ਛੋਡਿ ਰਚਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਇਉ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
Laalach Shhodd Rachahu Aparanpar Eio Paavahu Mukath Dhuaaraa Hae ||1||
लालच छोडि रचहु अपर्मपरि इउ पावहु मुकति दुआरा हे ॥१॥
Renounce your greed, and merge with the infinite Lord. In this way, you shall find the door of liberation. ||1||
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਣਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Jis Bisariai Jam Johan Laagai ||
जिसु बिसरिऐ जमु जोहणि लागै ॥
If you forget Him, the Messenger of Death will catch sight of you.
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਗੈ ॥
Sabh Sukh Jaahi Dhukhaa Fun Aagai ||
सभि सुख जाहि दुखा फुनि आगै ॥
All peace will be gone, and you will suffer in pain in the world hereafter.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

राम नामु जपि गुरमुखि जीअड़े एहु परम ततु वीचारा हे ॥२॥
Chant the Name of the Lord as Gurmukh, O my soul; this is the supreme essence of contemplation. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥

हरि हरि नामु जपहु रसु मीठा ॥
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, the sweetest essence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥
Guramukh Har Ras Anthar Ddeethaa ||
गुरमुखि हरि रसु अंतरि डीठा ॥
As Gurmukh, see the essence of the Lord deep within.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਏਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Ahinis Raam Rehahu Rang Raathae Eaehu Jap Thap Sanjam Saaraa Hae ||3||
अहिनिसि राम रहहु रंगि राते एहु जपु तपु संजमु सारा हे ॥३॥
Day and night, remain imbued with the Lord's Love. This is the essence of all chanting, deep meditation and self-discipline. ||3||

राम नामु गुर बचनी बोलहु ॥
Speak the Guru's Word, and the Name of the Lord.
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਟੋਲਹੁ ॥
Santh Sabhaa Mehi Eihu Ras Ttolahu ||
संत सभा महि इहु रसु टोलहु ॥
In the Society of the Saints, search for this essence.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Guramath Khoj Lehahu Ghar Apanaa Bahurr N Garabh Majhaaraa Hae ||4||
गुरमति खोजि लहहु घरु अपना बहुड़ि न गरभ मझारा हे ॥४॥
Follow the Guru's Teachings - seek and find the home of your own self, and you shall never be consigned to the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||
ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ॥
Sach Theerathh Naavahu Har Gun Gaavahu ||
सचु तीरथि नावहु हरि गुण गावहु ॥
Bathe at the sacred shrine of Truth, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹੁ ॥
Thath Veechaarahu Har Liv Laavahu ||
ततु वीचारहु हरि लिव लावहु ॥
Reflect upon the essence of reality, and lovingly focus your consciousness on the Lord.
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
Anth Kaal Jam Johi N Saakai Har Bolahu Raam Piaaraa Hae ||5||
अंत कालि जमु जोहि न साकै हरि बोलहु रामु पिआरा हे ॥५॥
At the very last moment, the Messenger of Death will not be able to touch you, if you chant the Name of the Beloved Lord. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ॥
Sathigur Purakh Dhaathaa Vadd Dhaanaa ||
सतिगुरु पुरखु दाता वड दाणा ॥
The True Guru, the Primal Being, the Great Giver, is all-knowing.
ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥
Jis Anthar Saach S Sabadh Samaanaa ||
जिसु अंतरि साचु सु सबदि समाणा ॥
Whoever has Truth within himself, merges in the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Jis Ko Sathigur Mael Milaaeae This Chookaa Jam Bhai Bhaaraa Hae ||6||
जिस कउ सतिगुरु मेलि मिलाए तिसु चूका जम भै भारा हे ॥६॥
One whom the True Guru unites in Union, is rid of the overpowering fear of death. ||6||
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
Panch Thath Mil Kaaeiaa Keenee ||
पंच ततु मिलि काइआ कीनी ॥
The body is formed from the union of the five elements.
ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਲੈ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
This Mehi Raam Rathan Lai Cheenee ||
तिस महि राम रतनु लै चीनी ॥
Know that the Lord's jewel is within it.
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
Aatham Raam Raam Hai Aatham Har Paaeeai Sabadh Veechaaraa Hae ||7||
आतम रामु रामु है आतम हरि पाईऐ सबदि वीचारा हे ॥७॥
The soul is the Lord, and the Lord is the soul; contemplating the Shabad, the Lord is found. ||7||
ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
Sath Santhokh Rehahu Jan Bhaaee ||
सत संतोखि रहहु जन भाई ॥
Abide in truth and contentment, O humble Siblings of Destiny.
ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
Khimaa Gehahu Sathigur Saranaaee ||
खिमा गहहु सतिगुर सरणाई ॥
Hold tight to compassion and the Sanctuary of the True Guru.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Aatham Cheen Paraatham Cheenahu Gur Sangath Eihu Nisathaaraa Hae ||8||
आतमु चीनि परातमु चीनहु गुर संगति इहु निसतारा हे ॥८॥
Know your soul, and know the Supreme Soul; associating with the Guru, you shall be emancipated. ||8||
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਪਟ ਮਹਿ ਟੇਕਾ ॥
Saakath Koorr Kapatt Mehi Ttaekaa ||
साकत कूड़ कपट महि टेका ॥
The faithless cynics are stuck in falsehood and deceit.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥
Ahinis Nindhaa Karehi Anaekaa ||
अहिनिसि निंदा करहि अनेका ॥
Day and night, they slander many others.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਨਰਕ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Bin Simaran Aavehi Fun Jaavehi Grabh Jonee Narak Majhaaraa Hae ||9||
बिनु सिमरन आवहि फुनि जावहि ग्रभ जोनी नरक मझारा हे ॥९॥
Without meditative remembrance, they come and then go, and are cast into the hellish womb of reincarnation. ||9||
ਸਾਕਤ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ॥
Saakath Jam Kee Kaan N Chookai ||
साकत जम की काणि न चूकै ॥
The faithless cynic is not rid of his fear of death.
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਮੂਕੈ ॥
Jam Kaa Ddandd N Kabehoo Mookai ||
जम का डंडु न कबहू मूकै ॥
The Messenger of Death's club is never taken away.
ਬਾਕੀ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Baakee Dhharam Raae Kee Leejai Sir Afariou Bhaar Afaaraa Hae ||10||
बाकी धरम राइ की लीजै सिरि अफरिओ भारु अफारा हे ॥१०॥
He has to answer to the Righteous Judge of Dharma for the account of his actions; the egotistical being carries the unbearable load. ||10||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
Bin Gur Saakath Kehahu Ko Thariaa ||
बिनु गुर साकतु कहहु को तरिआ ॥
Tell me: without the Guru, what faithless cynic has been saved?
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
Houmai Karathaa Bhavajal Pariaa ||
हउमै करता भवजलि परिआ ॥
Acting egotistically, he falls into the terrifying world-ocean.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
Bin Gur Paar N Paavai Koee Har Japeeai Paar Outhaaraa Hae ||11||
बिनु गुर पारु न पावै कोई हरि जपीऐ पारि उतारा हे ॥११॥
Without the Guru, no one is saved; meditating on the Lord, they are carried across to the other side. ||11||
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
Gur Kee Dhaath N Maettai Koee ||
गुर की दाति न मेटै कोई ॥
No one can erase the Guru's blessings.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
Jis Bakhasae This Thaarae Soee ||
जिसु बखसे तिसु तारे सोई ॥
The Lord carries across those whom He forgives.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Janam Maran Dhukh Naerr N Aavai Man So Prabh Apar Apaaraa Hae ||12||
जनम मरण दुखु नेड़ि न आवै मनि सो प्रभु अपर अपारा हे ॥१२॥
The pains of birth and death do not even approach those whose minds are filled with God, the infinite and endless. ||12||
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥
Gur Thae Bhoolae Aavahu Jaavahu ||
गुर ते भूले आवहु जावहु ॥
Those who forget the Guru come and go in reincarnation.
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥
Janam Marahu Fun Paap Kamaavahu ||
जनमि मरहु फुनि पाप कमावहु ॥
They are born, only to die again, and continue committing sins.
ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂੜ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
Saakath Moorr Achaeth N Chaethehi Dhukh Laagai Thaa Raam Pukaaraa Hae ||13||
साकत मूड़ अचेत न चेतहि दुखु लागै ता रामु पुकारा हे ॥१३॥
The unconscious, foolish, faithless cynic does not remember the Lord; but when he is stricken with pain, then he cries out for the Lord. ||13||
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ॥
Sukh Dhukh Purab Janam Kae Keeeae ||
सुखु दुखु पुरब जनम के कीए ॥
Pleasure and pain are the consequences of the actions of past lives.
ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਦੀਏ ॥
So Jaanai Jin Dhaathai Dheeeae ||
सो जाणै जिनि दातै दीए ॥
The Giver, who blesses us with these - He alone knows.
ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Kis Ko Dhos Dhaehi Thoo Praanee Sahu Apanaa Keeaa Karaaraa Hae ||14||
किस कउ दोसु देहि तू प्राणी सहु अपणा कीआ करारा हे ॥१४॥
So who can you blame, O mortal being? The hardships you suffer are from your own actions. ||14||
