Naavahu Bhulee Chottaa Khaaeae ||
नावहु भुली चोटा खाए ॥
Wandering from the Name, he endures beatings.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥
Bahuth Siaanap Bharam N Jaaeae ||
बहुतु सिआणप भरमु न जाए ॥
Even great cleverness does not dispel doubt.
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Pach Pach Mueae Achaeth N Chaethehi Ajagar Bhaar Ladhaaee Hae ||8||
पचि पचि मुए अचेत न चेतहि अजगरि भारि लदाई हे ॥८॥
The unconscious fool does not remain conscious of the Lord; he putrifies and rots away to death, carrying his heavy load of sin. ||8||
ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦ ਬਿਰੋਧਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Bin Baadh Birodhhehi Koee Naahee ||
बिनु बाद बिरोधहि कोई नाही ॥
No one is free of conflict and strife.
ਮੈ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
Mai Dhaekhaalihu This Saalaahee ||
मै देखालिहु तिसु सालाही ॥
Show me anyone who is, and I will praise him.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Man Than Arap Milai Jagajeevan Har Sio Banath Banaaee Hae ||9||
मनु तनु अरपि मिलै जगजीवनु हरि सिउ बणत बणाई हे ॥९॥
Dedicating mind and body to God, one meets the Lord, the Life of the World, and becomes just like Him. ||9||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Prabh Kee Gath Mith Koe N Paavai ||
प्रभ की गति मिति कोइ न पावै ॥
No one knows the state and extent of God.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਵਡਾ ਕਹਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
Jae Ko Vaddaa Kehaae Vaddaaee Khaavai ||
जे को वडा कहाइ वडाई खावै ॥
Whoever calls himself great, will be eaten by his greatness.
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਦਾਤੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Saachae Saahib Thott N Dhaathee Sagalee Thinehi Oupaaee Hae ||10||
साचे साहिब तोटि न दाती सगली तिनहि उपाई हे ॥१०॥
There is no lack of gifts of our True Lord and Master. He created all. ||10||
ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
Vaddee Vaddiaaee Vaeparavaahae ||
वडी वडिआई वेपरवाहे ॥
Great is the glorious greatness of the independent Lord.
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ॥
Aap Oupaaeae Dhaan Samaahae ||
आपि उपाए दानु समाहे ॥
He Himself created, and gives sustanance to all.
ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
Aap Dhaeiaal Dhoor Nehee Dhaathaa Miliaa Sehaj Rajaaee Hae ||11||
आपि दइआलु दूरि नही दाता मिलिआ सहजि रजाई हे ॥११॥
The Merciful Lord is not far away; the Great Giver spontaneously unites with Himself, by His Will. ||11||
ਇਕਿ ਸੋਗੀ ਇਕਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
Eik Sogee Eik Rog Viaapae ||
इकि सोगी इकि रोगि विआपे ॥
Some are sad, and some are afflicted with disease.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
Jo Kishh Karae S Aapae Aapae ||
जो किछु करे सु आपे आपे ॥
Whatever God does, He does by Himself.
ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Bhagath Bhaao Gur Kee Math Pooree Anehadh Sabadh Lakhaaee Hae ||12||
भगति भाउ गुर की मति पूरी अनहदि सबदि लखाई हे ॥१२॥
Through loving devotion, and the Perfect Teachings of the Guru, the unstruck sound current of the Shabad is realized. ||12||
ਇਕਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭਵਹਿ ਭਵਾਏ ॥
Eik Naagae Bhookhae Bhavehi Bhavaaeae ||
इकि नागे भूखे भवहि भवाए ॥
Some wander and roam around, hungry and naked.
ਇਕਿ ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
Eik Hath Kar Marehi N Keemath Paaeae ||
इकि हठु करि मरहि न कीमति पाए ॥
Some act in stubbornness and die, but do not know the value of God.
ਗਤਿ ਅਵਿਗਤ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
Gath Avigath Kee Saar N Jaanai Boojhai Sabadh Kamaaee Hae ||13||
गति अविगत की सार न जाणै बूझै सबदु कमाई हे ॥१३॥
They do not know the difference between good and bad; this is understood only through the practice of the Word of the Shabad. ||13||
ਇਕਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥
Eik Theerathh Naavehi Ann N Khaavehi ||
इकि तीरथि नावहि अंनु न खावहि ॥
Some bathe at sacred shrines and refuse to eat.
ਇਕਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ਦੇਹ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Eik Agan Jalaavehi Dhaeh Khapaavehi ||
इकि अगनि जलावहि देह खपावहि ॥
Some torment their bodies in burning fire.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Raam Naam Bin Mukath N Hoee Kith Bidhh Paar Langhaaee Hae ||14||
राम नाम बिनु मुकति न होई कितु बिधि पारि लंघाई हे ॥१४॥
Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained; how can anyone cross over? ||14||
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
Guramath Shhoddehi Oujharr Jaaee ||
गुरमति छोडहि उझड़ि जाई ॥
Abandoning the Guru's Teachings, some wander in the wilderness.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਾਈ ॥
Manamukh Raam N Japai Avaaee ||
मनमुखि रामु न जपै अवाई ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are destitute; they do not meditate on the Lord.
ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
Pach Pach Booddehi Koorr Kamaavehi Koorr Kaal Bairaaee Hae ||15||
पचि पचि बूडहि कूड़ु कमावहि कूड़ि कालु बैराई हे ॥१५॥
They are ruined, destroyed and drowned from practicing falsehood; death is the enemy of the false. ||15||
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
Hukamae Aavai Hukamae Jaavai ||
हुकमे आवै हुकमे जावै ॥
By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, they come, and by the Hukam of His Command, they go.
ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
Boojhai Hukam So Saach Samaavai ||
बूझै हुकमु सो साचि समावै ॥
One who realizes His Hukam, merges in the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥
Naanak Saach Milai Man Bhaavai Guramukh Kaar Kamaaee Hae ||16||5||
नानक साचु मिलै मनि भावै गुरमुखि कार कमाई हे ॥१६॥५॥
O Nanak, he merges in the True Lord, and his mind is pleased with the Lord. The Gurmukhs do His work. ||16||5||

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥
Aapae Karathaa Purakh Bidhhaathaa ||
आपे करता पुरखु बिधाता ॥
He Himself is the Creator Lord, the Architect of Destiny.
ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
Jin Aapae Aap Oupaae Pashhaathaa ||
जिनि आपे आपि उपाइ पछाता ॥
He evaluates those whom He Himself has created.
ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
Aapae Sathigur Aapae Saevak Aapae Srisatt Oupaaee Hae ||1||
आपे सतिगुरु आपे सेवकु आपे स्रिसटि उपाई हे ॥१॥
He Himself is the True Guru, and He Himself is the servant; He Himself created the Universe. ||1||
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
Aapae Naerrai Naahee Dhoorae ||
आपे नेड़ै नाही दूरे ॥
He is near at hand, not far away.
ਬੂਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
Boojhehi Guramukh Sae Jan Poorae ||
बूझहि गुरमुखि से जन पूरे ॥
The Gurmukhs understand Him; perfect are those humble beings.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਏਹ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Thin Kee Sangath Ahinis Laahaa Gur Sangath Eaeh Vaddaaee Hae ||2||
तिन की संगति अहिनिसि लाहा गुर संगति एह वडाई हे ॥२॥
Associating with them night and day is profitable. This is the glorious greatness of associating with the Guru. ||2||
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
Jug Jug Santh Bhalae Prabh Thaerae ||
जुगि जुगि संत भले प्रभ तेरे ॥
Throughout the ages, Your Saints are holy and sublime, O God.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸੇਰੇ ॥
Har Gun Gaavehi Rasan Rasaerae ||
हरि गुण गावहि रसन रसेरे ॥
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, savoring it with their tongues.
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Ousathath Karehi Parehar Dhukh Dhaaladh Jin Naahee Chinth Paraaee Hae ||3||
उसतति करहि परहरि दुखु दालदु जिन नाही चिंत पराई हे ॥३॥
They chant His Praises, and their pain and poverty are taken away; they are not afraid of anyone else. ||3||
ਓਇ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤੇ ਦੀਸਹਿ ॥
Oue Jaagath Rehehi N Soothae Dheesehi ||
ओइ जागत रहहि न सूते दीसहि ॥
They remain awake and aware, and do not appear to sleep.
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਸਹਿ ॥
Sangath Kul Thaarae Saach Pareesehi ||
संगति कुल तारे साचु परीसहि ॥
They serve up Truth, and so save their companions and relatives.
ਕਲਿਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਓਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Kalimal Mail Naahee Thae Niramal Oue Rehehi Bhagath Liv Laaee Hae ||4||
कलिमल मैलु नाही ते निरमल ओइ रहहि भगति लिव लाई हे ॥४॥
They are not stained with the filth of sins; they are immaculate and pure, and remain absorbed in loving devotional worship. ||4||
ਬੂਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
Boojhahu Har Jan Sathigur Baanee ||
बूझहु हरि जन सतिगुर बाणी ॥
O humble servants of the Lord, understand the Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਏਹੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥
Eaehu Joban Saas Hai Dhaeh Puraanee ||
एहु जोबनु सासु है देह पुराणी ॥
This youth, breath and body shall pass away.
ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
Aaj Kaal Mar Jaaeeai Praanee Har Jap Jap Ridhai Dhhiaaee Hae ||5||
आजु कालि मरि जाईऐ प्राणी हरि जपु जपि रिदै धिआई हे ॥५॥
O mortal, you shall die today or tomorrow; chant, and meditate on the Lord within your heart. ||5||
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕੂੜ ਕਬਾੜਾ ॥
Shhoddahu Praanee Koorr Kabaarraa ||
छोडहु प्राणी कूड़ कबाड़ा ॥
O mortal, abandon falsehood and your worthless ways.
ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਉਛਾਹਾੜਾ ॥
Koorr Maarae Kaal Oushhaahaarraa ||
कूड़ु मारे कालु उछाहाड़ा ॥
Death viciously kills the false beings.
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Saakath Koorr Pachehi Man Houmai Dhuhu Maarag Pachai Pachaaee Hae ||6||
साकत कूड़ि पचहि मनि हउमै दुहु मारगि पचै पचाई हे ॥६॥
The faithless cynic is ruined through falsehood and his egotistical mind.On the path of duality, he rots away and decomposes. ||6||
