ਛੋਡਿਹੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ॥
Shhoddihu Nindhaa Thaath Paraaee ||
छोडिहु निंदा ताति पराई ॥
Abandon slander and envy of others.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
Parr Parr Dhajhehi Saath N Aaee ||
पड़ि पड़ि दझहि साति न आई ॥
Reading and studying, they burn, and do not find tranquility.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
Mil Sathasangath Naam Salaahahu Aatham Raam Sakhaaee Hae ||7||
मिलि सतसंगति नामु सलाहहु आतम रामु सखाई हे ॥७॥
Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord, the Supreme Soul, shall be your helper and companion. ||7||
ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥
Shhoddahu Kaam Krodhh Buriaaee ||
छोडहु काम क्रोधु बुरिआई ॥
Abandon sexual desire, anger and wickedness.
ਹਉਮੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਲੰਪਟਾਈ ॥
Houmai Dhhandhh Shhoddahu Lanpattaaee ||
हउमै धंधु छोडहु ल्मपटाई ॥
Abandon your involvement in egotistical affairs and conflicts.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹੁ ਇਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Sathigur Saran Parahu Thaa Oubarahu Eio Thareeai Bhavajal Bhaaee Hae ||8||
सतिगुर सरणि परहु ता उबरहु इउ तरीऐ भवजलु भाई हे ॥८॥
If you seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru, then you shall be saved. In this way you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8||
ਆਗੈ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝੇਲਾ ॥
Aagai Bimal Nadhee Agan Bikh Jhaelaa ||
आगै बिमल नदी अगनि बिखु झेला ॥
In the hereafter, you shall have to cross over the fiery river of poisonous flames.
ਤਿਥੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥
Thithhai Avar N Koee Jeeo Eikaelaa ||
तिथै अवरु न कोई जीउ इकेला ॥
No one else will be there; your soul shall be all alone.
ਭੜ ਭੜ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇ ਲਹਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Bharr Bharr Agan Saagar Dhae Leharee Parr Dhajhehi Manamukh Thaaee Hae ||9||
भड़ भड़ अगनि सागरु दे लहरी पड़ि दझहि मनमुख ताई हे ॥९॥
The ocean of fire spits out waves of searing flames; the self-willed manmukhs fall into it, and are roasted there. ||9||
ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
Gur Pehi Mukath Dhaan Dhae Bhaanai ||
गुर पहि मुकति दानु दे भाणै ॥
Liberation comes from the Guru; He grants this blessing by the Pleasure of His Will.
ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Jin Paaeiaa Soee Bidhh Jaanai ||
जिनि पाइआ सोई बिधि जाणै ॥
He alone knows the way, who obtains it.
ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Jin Paaeiaa Thin Pooshhahu Bhaaee Sukh Sathigur Saev Kamaaee Hae ||10||
जिन पाइआ तिन पूछहु भाई सुखु सतिगुर सेव कमाई हे ॥१०॥
So ask one who has obtained it, O Siblings of Destiny. Serve the True Guru, and find peace. ||10||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬੇਕਾਰਾ ॥
Gur Bin Ourajh Marehi Baekaaraa ||
गुर बिनु उरझि मरहि बेकारा ॥
Without the Guru, he dies entangled in sin and corruption.
ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥
Jam Sir Maarae Karae Khuaaraa ||
जमु सिरि मारे करे खुआरा ॥
The Messenger of Death smashes his head and humiliates him.
ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਨਿੰਦ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
Baadhhae Mukath Naahee Nar Nindhak Ddoobehi Nindh Paraaee Hae ||11||
बाधे मुकति नाही नर निंदक डूबहि निंद पराई हे ॥११॥
The slanderous person is not freed of his bonds; he is drowned, slandering others. ||11||
ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥
Bolahu Saach Pashhaanahu Andhar ||
बोलहु साचु पछाणहु अंदरि ॥
So speak the Truth, and realize the Lord deep within.
ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਨੰਦਰਿ ॥
Dhoor Naahee Dhaekhahu Kar Nandhar ||
दूरि नाही देखहु करि नंदरि ॥
He is not far away; look, and see Him.
ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਇਉ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Bighan Naahee Guramukh Thar Thaaree Eio Bhavajal Paar Langhaaee Hae ||12||
बिघनु नाही गुरमुखि तरु तारी इउ भवजलु पारि लंघाई हे ॥१२॥
No obstacles shall block your way; become Gurmukh, and cross over to the other side. This is the way to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12||
ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥
Dhaehee Andhar Naam Nivaasee ||
देही अंदरि नामु निवासी ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the body.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
Aapae Karathaa Hai Abinaasee ||
आपे करता है अबिनासी ॥
The Creator Lord is eternal and imperishable.
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
Naa Jeeo Marai N Maariaa Jaaee Kar Dhaekhai Sabadh Rajaaee Hae ||13||
ना जीउ मरै न मारिआ जाई करि देखै सबदि रजाई हे ॥१३॥
The soul does not die, and it cannot be killed; God creates and watches over all. Through the Word of the Shabad, His Will is manifest. ||13||
ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥
Ouhu Niramal Hai Naahee Andhhiaaraa ||
ओहु निरमलु है नाही अंधिआरा ॥
He is immaculate, and has no darkness.
ਓਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
Ouhu Aapae Thakhath Behai Sachiaaraa ||
ओहु आपे तखति बहै सचिआरा ॥
The True Lord Himself sits upon His throne.
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਈ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Saakath Koorrae Bandhh Bhavaaeeahi Mar Janamehi Aaee Jaaee Hae ||14||
साकत कूड़े बंधि भवाईअहि मरि जनमहि आई जाई हे ॥१४॥
The faithless cynics are bound and gagged, and forced to wander in reincarnation. They die, and are reborn, and continue coming and going. ||14||
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
Gur Kae Saevak Sathigur Piaarae ||
गुर के सेवक सतिगुर पिआरे ॥
The Guru's servants are the Beloveds of the True Guru.
ਓਇ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
Oue Baisehi Thakhath S Sabadh Veechaarae ||
ओइ बैसहि तखति सु सबदु वीचारे ॥
Contemplating the Shabad, they sit upon His throne.
ਤਤੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
Thath Lehehi Antharagath Jaanehi Sathasangath Saach Vaddaaee Hae ||15||
ततु लहहि अंतरगति जाणहि सतसंगति साचु वडाई हे ॥१५॥
They realize the essence of reality, and know the state of their inner being. This is the true glorious greatness of those who join the Sat Sangat. ||15||
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
Aap Tharai Jan Pitharaa Thaarae ||
आपि तरै जनु पितरा तारे ॥
He Himself saves His humble servant, and saves his ancestors as well.
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
Sangath Mukath S Paar Outhaarae ||
संगति मुकति सु पारि उतारे ॥
His companions are liberated; He carries them across.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥
Naanak This Kaa Laalaa Golaa Jin Guramukh Har Liv Laaee Hae ||16||6||
नानकु तिस का लाला गोला जिनि गुरमुखि हरि लिव लाई हे ॥१६॥६॥
Nanak is the servant and slave of that Gurmukh who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Lord. ||16||6||

ਕੇਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਵਰਤੇ ਗੁਬਾਰੈ ॥

केते जुग वरते गुबारै ॥
For many ages, only darkness prevailed;
ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥
Thaarree Laaee Apar Apaarai ||
ताड़ी लाई अपर अपारै ॥
The infinite, endless Lord was absorbed in the primal void.
ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
Dhhundhhookaar Niraalam Baithaa Naa Thadh Dhhandhh Pasaaraa Hae ||1||
धुंधूकारि निरालमु बैठा ना तदि धंधु पसारा हे ॥१॥
He sat alone and unaffected in absolute darkness; the world of conflict did not exist. ||1||
ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਤਿਨੈ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥
Jug Shhatheeh Thinai Varathaaeae ||
जुग छतीह तिनै वरताए ॥
Thirty-six ages passed like this.
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
Jio This Bhaanaa Thivai Chalaaeae ||
जिउ तिसु भाणा तिवै चलाए ॥
He causes all to happen by the Pleasure of His Will.
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Thisehi Sareek N Dheesai Koee Aapae Apar Apaaraa Hae ||2||
तिसहि सरीकु न दीसै कोई आपे अपर अपारा हे ॥२॥
No rival of His can be seen. He Himself is infinite and endless. ||2||
ਗੁਪਤੇ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਚਤੁਆਰੇ ॥
Gupathae Boojhahu Jug Chathuaarae ||
गुपते बूझहु जुग चतुआरे ॥
God is hidden throughout the four ages - understand this well.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰੇ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Varathai Oudhar Majhaarae ||
घटि घटि वरतै उदर मझारे ॥
He pervades each and every heart, and is contained within the belly.
ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕਾ ਏਕੀ ਵਰਤੈ ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Jug Jug Eaekaa Eaekee Varathai Koee Boojhai Gur Veechaaraa Hae ||3||
जुगु जुगु एका एकी वरतै कोई बूझै गुर वीचारा हे ॥३॥
The One and Only Lord prevails throughout the ages. How rare are those who contemplate the Guru, and understand this. ||3||
ਬਿੰਦੁ ਰਕਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਰੀਆ ॥
Bindh Rakath Mil Pindd Sareeaa ||
बिंदु रकतु मिलि पिंडु सरीआ ॥
From the union of the sperm and the egg, the body was formed.
ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੀਆ ॥
Poun Paanee Aganee Mil Jeeaa ||
पउणु पाणी अगनी मिलि जीआ ॥
From the union of air, water and fire, the living being is made.
ਆਪੇ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Aapae Choj Karae Rang Mehalee Hor Maaeiaa Moh Pasaaraa Hae ||4||
आपे चोज करे रंग महली होर माइआ मोह पसारा हे ॥४॥
He Himself plays joyfully in the mansion of the body; all the rest is just attachment to Maya's expanse. ||4||
ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਧਿਆਨੀ ॥
Garabh Kunddal Mehi Ouradhh Dhhiaanee ||
गरभ कुंडल महि उरध धिआनी ॥
Within the mother's womb, upside-down, the mortal meditated on God.
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
Aapae Jaanai Antharajaamee ||
आपे जाणै अंतरजामी ॥
The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything.
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
Saas Saas Sach Naam Samaalae Anthar Oudhar Majhaaraa Hae ||5||
सासि सासि सचु नामु समाले अंतरि उदर मझारा हे ॥५॥
With each and every breath, he contemplated the True Name, deep within himself, within the womb. ||5||
