Sach Bin Bhavajal Jaae N Thariaa ||
सच बिनु भवजलु जाइ न तरिआ ॥
Without the Truth, the terrifying world-ocean cannot be crossed.
ਏਹੁ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਰਿਆ ॥
Eaehu Samundh Athhaahu Mehaa Bikh Bhariaa ||
एहु समुंदु अथाहु महा बिखु भरिआ ॥
This ocean is vast and unfathomable; it is overflowing with the worst poison.
ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
Rehai Atheeth Guramath Lae Oopar Har Nirabho Kai Ghar Paaeiaa ||6||
रहै अतीतु गुरमति ले ऊपरि हरि निरभउ कै घरि पाइआ ॥६॥
One who receives the Guru's Teachings, and remains aloof and detached, obtains a place in the home of the Fearless Lord. ||6||
ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗ ਹਿਤ ਕੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
Jhoothee Jag Hith Kee Chathuraaee ||
झूठी जग हित की चतुराई ॥
False is the cleverness of loving attachment to the world.
ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥
Bilam N Laagai Aavai Jaaee ||
बिलम न लागै आवै जाई ॥
In no time at all, it comes and goes.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਖਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
Naam Visaar Chalehi Abhimaanee Oupajai Binas Khapaaeiaa ||7||
नामु विसारि चलहि अभिमानी उपजै बिनसि खपाइआ ॥७॥
Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the proud egotistical people depart; in creation and destruction they are wasted away. ||7||
ਉਪਜਹਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧੇ ॥
Oupajehi Binasehi Bandhhan Bandhhae ||
उपजहि बिनसहि बंधन बंधे ॥
In creation and destruction, they are bound in bondage.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਗਲਿ ਫੰਧੇ ॥
Houmai Maaeiaa Kae Gal Fandhhae ||
हउमै माइआ के गलि फंधे ॥
The noose of egotism and Maya is around their necks.
ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
Jis Raam Naam Naahee Math Guramath So Jam Pur Bandhh Chalaaeiaa ||8||
जिसु राम नामु नाही मति गुरमति सो जम पुरि बंधि चलाइआ ॥८॥
Whoever does not accept the Guru's Teachings, and does not dwell upon the Lord's Name, is bound and bagged, and dragged into the City of Death. ||8||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Gur Bin Mokh Mukath Kio Paaeeai ||
गुर बिनु मोख मुकति किउ पाईऐ ॥
Without the Guru, how can anyone be emancipated or liberated?
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਉ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
Bin Gur Raam Naam Kio Dhhiaaeeai ||
बिनु गुर राम नामु किउ धिआईऐ ॥
Without the Guru, how can anyone meditate on the Lord's Name?
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਰਹੁ ਭਵ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
Guramath Laehu Tharahu Bhav Dhuthar Mukath Bheae Sukh Paaeiaa ||9||
गुरमति लेहु तरहु भव दुतरु मुकति भए सुखु पाइआ ॥९॥
Accepting the Guru's Teachings, cross over the arduous, terrifying world-ocean; you shall be emancipated, and find peace. ||9||

गुरमति लेहु परम पदु पाईऐ नानक गुरि भरमु चुकाइआ ॥१०॥
Accepting the Guru's Teachings, the supreme status is obtained; O Nanak, the Guru eradicates doubt. ||10||

O soul, remember the Lord within your heart.
ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
Jam Kae Faahae Kaattehi Har Jap Akul Niranjan Paaeiaa ||11||
जम के फाहे काटहि हरि जपि अकुल निरंजनु पाइआ ॥११॥
The noose of death is cut away, meditating on the Lord; you shall obtain the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. ||11||

Man Mukh Naam Japahu Jagajeevan Ridh Anthar Alakh Lakhaaeiaa ||12||
मनि मुखि नामु जपहु जगजीवन रिद अंतरि अलखु लखाइआ ॥१२॥
Chant the Naam with your mind and mouth; know the unknowable Lord, the Life of the World, deep within the nucleus of your heart. ||12||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥
Guramukh Boojhai Sabadh Patheejai ||
गुरमुखि बूझै सबदि पतीजै ॥
The Gurmukh understands, and is pleased with the Word of the Shabad.

उसतति निंदा किस की कीजै ॥
Who does he praise or slander?

चीनहु आपु जपहु जगदीसरु हरि जगंनाथु मनि भाइआ ॥१३॥
Know yourself, and meditate on the Lord of the Universe; let your mind be pleased with the Lord, the Master of the Universe. ||13||
ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਿ ਖੰਡਿ ਸੋ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥
Jo Brehamandd Khandd So Jaanahu ||
जो ब्रहमंडि खंडि सो जाणहु ॥
Know the One who pervades all the realms of the universe.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ॥
Guramukh Boojhahu Sabadh Pashhaanahu ||
गुरमुखि बूझहु सबदि पछाणहु ॥
As Gurmukh, understand and realize the Shabad.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗਣਹਾਰਾ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
Ghatt Ghatt Bhogae Bhoganehaaraa Rehai Atheeth Sabaaeiaa ||14||
घटि घटि भोगे भोगणहारा रहै अतीतु सबाइआ ॥१४॥
The Enjoyer enjoys each and every heart, and yet He remains detached from all. ||14||

Whoever listens to the Lord's Name, and the Word of His Bani, O Nanak, is imbued with the color of the Lord's Love. ||15||3||20||

लबु लोभु तजि होहु निचिंदा ॥
Renounce greed and possessiveness, and become carefree.

भ्रम का संगलु तोड़ि निराला हरि अंतरि हरि रसु पाइआ ॥१॥
Break the chains of doubt, and remain unattached; you shall find the Lord, and the Lord's sublime essence, deep within yourself.||1||
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਚਮਕਿ ਚੰਦਾਇਣੁ ਦੇਖੈ ॥

As one sees the flash of lightning in the night,

Obtaining the sublime ambrosial essence, desire and fear are dispelled.

अनभउ पदु पावै आपु गवाए ॥
The state of inspired illumination is obtained, and self-conceit is eradicated.

The lofty and exalted state, the highest of the high is obtained, practicing the immaculate Word of the Shabad. ||4||
