Kar Kirapaa Prabh Paar Outhaaree ||
करि किरपा प्रभि पारि उतारी ॥
God grants His Grace, and carries him across to the other side.
ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਗਹਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
Agan Paanee Saagar Ath Geharaa Gur Sathigur Paar Outhaaraa Hae ||2||
अगनि पाणी सागरु अति गहरा गुरु सतिगुरु पारि उतारा हे ॥२॥
The ocean is very deep, filled with fiery water; the Guru, the True Guru, carries us across to the other side. ||2||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Manamukh Andhhulae Sojhee Naahee ||
मनमुख अंधुले सोझी नाही ॥
The blind, self-willed manmukh does not understand.
ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
Aavehi Jaahi Marehi Mar Jaahee ||
आवहि जाहि मरहि मरि जाही ॥
He comes and goes in reincarnation, dying, and dying again.
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
Poorab Likhiaa Laekh N Mittee Jam Dhar Andhh Khuaaraa Hae ||3||
पूरबि लिखिआ लेखु न मिटई जम दरि अंधु खुआरा हे ॥३॥
The primal inscription of destiny cannot be erased. The spiritually blind suffer terribly at Death's door. ||3||
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Eik Aavehi Jaavehi Ghar Vaas N Paavehi ||
इकि आवहि जावहि घरि वासु न पावहि ॥
Some come and go, and do not find a home in their own heart.
ਕਿਰਤ ਕੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
Kirath Kae Baadhhae Paap Kamaavehi ||
किरत के बाधे पाप कमावहि ॥
Bound by their past actions, they commit sins.
ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
Andhhulae Sojhee Boojh N Kaaee Lobh Buraa Ahankaaraa Hae ||4||
अंधुले सोझी बूझ न काई लोभु बुरा अहंकारा हे ॥४॥
The blind ones have no understanding, no wisdom; they are trapped and ruined by greed and egotism. ||4||
ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਨ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
Pir Bin Kiaa This Dhhan Seegaaraa ||
पिर बिनु किआ तिसु धन सीगारा ॥
Without her Husband Lord, what good are the soul-bride's decorations?
ਪਰ ਪਿਰ ਰਾਤੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥
Par Pir Raathee Khasam Visaaraa ||
पर पिर राती खसमु विसारा ॥
She has forgotten her Lord and Master, and is infatuated with another's husband.
ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਬਾਪੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
Jio Baesuaa Pooth Baap Ko Keheeai Thio Fokatt Kaar Vikaaraa Hae ||5||
जिउ बेसुआ पूत बापु को कहीऐ तिउ फोकट कार विकारा हे ॥५॥
Just as no one knows who is the father of the prostitute's son, such are the worthless, useless deeds that are done. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਦੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
Praeth Pinjar Mehi Dhookh Ghanaerae ||
प्रेत पिंजर महि दूख घनेरे ॥
The ghost, in the body-cage, suffers all sorts of afflictions.
ਨਰਕਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰੇ ॥
Narak Pachehi Agiaan Andhhaerae ||
नरकि पचहि अगिआन अंधेरे ॥
Those who are blind to spiritual wisdom, putrefy in hell.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
Dhharam Raae Kee Baakee Leejai Jin Har Kaa Naam Visaaraa Hae ||6||
धरम राइ की बाकी लीजै जिनि हरि का नामु विसारा हे ॥६॥
The Righteous Judge of Dharma collects the balance due on the account, of those who forget the Name of the Lord. ||6||
ਸੂਰਜੁ ਤਪੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝਾਲਾ ॥
Sooraj Thapai Agan Bikh Jhaalaa ||
सूरजु तपै अगनि बिखु झाला ॥
The scorching sun blazes with flames of poison.
ਅਪਤੁ ਪਸੂ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
Apath Pasoo Manamukh Baethaalaa ||
अपतु पसू मनमुखु बेताला ॥
The self-willed manmukh is dishonored, a beast, a demon.
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਬੁਰਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
Aasaa Manasaa Koorr Kamaavehi Rog Buraa Buriaaraa Hae ||7||
आसा मनसा कूड़ु कमावहि रोगु बुरा बुरिआरा हे ॥७॥
Trapped by hope and desire, he practices falsehood, and is afflicted by the terrible disease of corruption. ||7||
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਕਲਰ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
Masathak Bhaar Kalar Sir Bhaaraa ||
मसतकि भारु कलर सिरि भारा ॥
He carries the heavy load of sins on his forehead and head.
ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥
Kio Kar Bhavajal Langhas Paaraa ||
किउ करि भवजलु लंघसि पारा ॥
How can he cross the terrifying world-ocean?
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
Sathigur Bohithh Aadh Jugaadhee Raam Naam Nisathaaraa Hae ||8||
सतिगुरु बोहिथु आदि जुगादी राम नामि निसतारा हे ॥८॥
From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, the True Guru has been the boat; through the Lord's Name, He carries us across. ||8||
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਜਗਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
Puthr Kalathr Jag Haeth Piaaraa ||
पुत्र कलत्र जगि हेतु पिआरा ॥
The love of one's children and spouse is so sweet in this world.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
Maaeiaa Mohu Pasariaa Paasaaraa ||
माइआ मोहु पसरिआ पासारा ॥
The expansive expanse of the Universe is attachment to Maya.
ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
Jam Kae Faahae Sathigur Thorrae Guramukh Thath Beechaaraa Hae ||9||
जम के फाहे सतिगुरि तोड़े गुरमुखि ततु बीचारा हे ॥९॥
The True Guru snaps the noose of Death, for that Gurmukh who contemplates the essence of reality. ||9||
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਰਾਹੀ ॥
Koorr Muthee Chaalai Bahu Raahee ||
कूड़ि मुठी चालै बहु राही ॥
Cheated by falsehood, the self-willed manmukh walks along many paths;
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦਾਝੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਹੀ ॥
Manamukh Dhaajhai Parr Parr Bhaahee ||
मनमुखु दाझै पड़ि पड़ि भाही ॥
He may be highly educated, but he burns in the fire.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
Anmrith Naam Guroo Vadd Dhaanaa Naam Japahu Sukh Saaraa Hae ||10||
अम्रित नामु गुरू वड दाणा नामु जपहु सुख सारा हे ॥१०॥
The Guru is the Great Giver of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. Chanting the Naam, sublime peace is obtained. ||10||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥

सतिगुरु तुठा सचु द्रिड़ाए ॥
The True Guru, in His Mercy, implants Truth within.

सभि दुख मेटे मारगि पाए ॥
All suffering is eradicated, and one is placed on the Path.

Kanddaa Paae N Gaddee Moolae Jis Sathigur Raakhanehaaraa Hae ||11||
कंडा पाइ न गडई मूले जिसु सतिगुरु राखणहारा हे ॥११॥
Not even a thorn ever pierces the foot of one who has the True Guru as his Protector. ||11||
ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲੈ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
Khaehoo Khaeh Ralai Than Shheejai ||
खेहू खेह रलै तनु छीजै ॥
Dust mixes with dust, when the body wastes away.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਪਾਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
Manamukh Paathhar Sail N Bheejai ||
मनमुखु पाथरु सैलु न भीजै ॥
The self-willed manmukh is like a stone slab, which is impervious to water.
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
Karan Palaav Karae Bahuthaerae Narak Surag Avathaaraa Hae ||12||
करण पलाव करे बहुतेरे नरकि सुरगि अवतारा हे ॥१२॥
He cries out and weeps and wails; he is reincarnated into heaven and then hell. ||12||
ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
Maaeiaa Bikh Bhueiangam Naalae ||
माइआ बिखु भुइअंगम नाले ॥
They live with the poisonous snake of Maya.
ਇਨਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
Ein Dhubidhhaa Ghar Bahuthae Gaalae ||
इनि दुबिधा घर बहुते गाले ॥
This duality has ruined so many homes.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
Sathigur Baajhahu Preeth N Oupajai Bhagath Rathae Patheeaaraa Hae ||13||
सतिगुर बाझहु प्रीति न उपजै भगति रते पतीआरा हे ॥१३॥
Without the True Guru, love does not well up. Imbued with devotional worship, the soul is satisfied. ||13||
ਸਾਕਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
Saakath Maaeiaa Ko Bahu Dhhaavehi ||
साकत माइआ कउ बहु धावहि ॥
The faithless cynics chase after Maya.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Naam Visaar Kehaa Sukh Paavehi ||
नामु विसारि कहा सुखु पावहि ॥
Forgetting the Naam, how can they find peace?
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਖਪਹਿ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
Thrihu Gun Anthar Khapehi Khapaavehi Naahee Paar Outhaaraa Hae ||14||
त्रिहु गुण अंतरि खपहि खपावहि नाही पारि उतारा हे ॥१४॥
In the three qualities, they are destroyed; they cannot cross over to the other side. ||14||
ਕੂਕਰ ਸੂਕਰ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
Kookar Sookar Keheeahi Koorriaaraa ||
कूकर सूकर कहीअहि कूड़िआरा ॥
The false are called pigs and dogs.
ਭਉਕਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਹਾਰਾ ॥
Bhouk Marehi Bho Bho Bho Haaraa ||
भउकि मरहि भउ भउ भउ हारा ॥
They bark themselves to death; they bark and bark and howl in fear.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
Man Than Jhoothae Koorr Kamaavehi Dhuramath Dharageh Haaraa Hae ||15||
मनि तनि झूठे कूड़ु कमावहि दुरमति दरगह हारा हे ॥१५॥
False in mind and body, they practice falsehood; through their evil-mindedness, they lose out in the Court of the Lord. ||15||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਨੂਆ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
Sathigur Milai Th Manooaa Ttaekai ||
सतिगुरु मिलै त मनूआ टेकै ॥
Meeting the True Guru, the mind is stabilized.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਕੈ ॥
Raam Naam Dhae Saran Paraekai ||
राम नामु दे सरणि परेकै ॥
One who seeks His Sanctuary is blessed with the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
Har Dhhan Naam Amolak Dhaevai Har Jas Dharageh Piaaraa Hae ||16||
हरि धनु नामु अमोलकु देवै हरि जसु दरगह पिआरा हे ॥१६॥
They are given the priceless wealth of the Lord's Name; singing His Praises, they are His beloveds in His court. ||16||
