ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਧੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥
Manamukh Jaanai Aapanae Dhheeaa Pooth Sanjog ||
मनमुखु जाणै आपणे धीआ पूत संजोगु ॥
The self-willed manmukh looks upon his daughters, sons and relatives as his own.


ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
Naaree Dhaekh Vigaaseeahi Naalae Harakh S Sog ||
नारी देखि विगासीअहि नाले हरखु सु सोगु ॥
Gazing upon his wife, he is pleased. But along with happiness, they bring grief.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥੩॥
Guramukh Sabadh Rangaavalae Ahinis Har Ras Bhog ||3||
गुरमुखि सबदि रंगावले अहिनिसि हरि रसु भोगु ॥३॥
The Gurmukhs are attuned to the Word of the Shabad. Day and night, they enjoy the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||


ਚਿਤੁ ਚਲੈ ਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਵਣੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
Chith Chalai Vith Jaavano Saakath Ddol Ddolaae ||
चितु चलै वितु जावणो साकत डोलि डोलाइ ॥
The consciousness of the wicked, faithless cynics wanders around in search of transitory wealth, unstable and distracted.


ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥
Baahar Dtoondt Vigucheeai Ghar Mehi Vasath Suthhaae ||
बाहरि ढूंढि विगुचीऐ घर महि वसतु सुथाइ ॥
Searching outside of themselves, they are ruined; the object of their search is in that sacred place within the home of the heart.


ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥
Manamukh Houmai Kar Musee Guramukh Palai Paae ||4||
मनमुखि हउमै करि मुसी गुरमुखि पलै पाइ ॥४॥
The self-willed manmukhs, in their ego, miss it; the Gurmukhs receive it in their laps. ||4||


ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
Saakath Niraguniaariaa Aapanaa Mool Pashhaan ||
साकत निरगुणिआरिआ आपणा मूलु पछाणु ॥
You worthless, faithless cynic-recognize your own origin!


ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੋ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣੁ ॥
Rakath Bindh Kaa Eihu Thano Aganee Paas Piraan ||
रकतु बिंदु का इहु तनो अगनी पासि पिराणु ॥
This body is made of blood and semen. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end.


ਪਵਣੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੫॥
Pavanai Kai Vas Dhaehuree Masathak Sach Neesaan ||5||
पवणै कै वसि देहुरी मसतकि सचु नीसाणु ॥५॥
The body is under the power of the breath, according to the True Sign inscribed upon your forehead. ||5||


ਬਹੁਤਾ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮੁਆ ਨ ਲੋੜੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Bahuthaa Jeevan Mangeeai Muaa N Lorrai Koe ||
बहुता जीवणु मंगीऐ मुआ न लोड़ै कोइ ॥
Everyone begs for a long life-no one wishes to die.


ਸੁਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
Sukh Jeevan This Aakheeai Jis Guramukh Vasiaa Soe ||
सुख जीवणु तिसु आखीऐ जिसु गुरमुखि वसिआ सोइ ॥
A life of peace and comfort comes to that Gurmukh, within whom God dwells.


ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
Naam Vihoonae Kiaa Ganee Jis Har Gur Dharas N Hoe ||6||
नाम विहूणे किआ गणी जिसु हरि गुर दरसु न होइ ॥६॥
Without the Naam, what good those who do not have the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of the Lord and Guru? ||6||


ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Jio Supanai Nis Bhuleeai Jab Lag Nidhraa Hoe ||
जिउ सुपनै निसि भुलीऐ जब लगि निद्रा होइ ॥
In their dreams at night, people wander around as long as they sleep;


ਇਉ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥
Eio Sarapan Kai Vas Jeearraa Anthar Houmai Dhoe ||
इउ सरपनि कै वसि जीअड़ा अंतरि हउमै दोइ ॥
Just so, they are under the power of the snake Maya, as long as their hearts are filled with ego and duality.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੭॥
Guramath Hoe Veechaareeai Supanaa Eihu Jag Loe ||7||
गुरमति होइ वीचारीऐ सुपना इहु जगु लोइ ॥७॥
Through the Guru's Teachings, they come to understand and see that this world is just a dream. ||7||


ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੂਧੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
Agan Marai Jal Paaeeai Jio Baarik Dhoodhhai Maae ||
अगनि मरै जलु पाईऐ जिउ बारिक दूधै माइ ॥
As thirst is quenched with water, and the baby is satisfied with mother's milk,


ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਸੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮੀਨੁ ਮਰਾਇ ॥
Bin Jal Kamal S Naa Thheeai Bin Jal Meen Maraae ||
बिनु जल कमल सु ना थीऐ बिनु जल मीनु मराइ ॥
And as the lotus does not exist without water, and as the fish dies without water


ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
Naanak Guramukh Har Ras Milai Jeevaa Har Gun Gaae ||8||15||
नानक गुरमुखि हरि रसि मिलै जीवा हरि गुण गाइ ॥८॥१५॥
-O Nanak, so does the Gurmukh live, receiving the Sublime Essence of the Lord, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||15||

Siree Raag, First Mehl:


ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡਰੀਆਸੁ ॥
Ddoongar Dhaekh Ddaraavano Paeeearrai Ddareeaas ||
डूंगरु देखि डरावणो पेईअड़ै डरीआसु ॥
Beholding the terrifying mountain in this world of my father's home, I am terrified.


ਊਚਉ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਗਾਖੜੋ ਨਾ ਪਉੜੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
Oocho Parabath Gaakharro Naa Pourree Thith Thaas ||
ऊचउ परबतु गाखड़ो ना पउड़ी तितु तासु ॥
It is so difficult to climb this high mountain; there is no ladder which reaches up there.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਰੀਆਸੁ ॥੧॥
Guramukh Anthar Jaaniaa Gur Maelee Thareeaas ||1||
गुरमुखि अंतरि जाणिआ गुरि मेली तरीआसु ॥१॥
But as Gurmukh, I know that it is within my self; the Guru has brought me to Union, and so I cross over. ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਂਉ ॥
Bhaaee Rae Bhavajal Bikham Ddaraano ||
भाई रे भवजलु बिखमु डरांउ ॥
O Siblings of Destiny, the terrifying world-ocean is so difficult to cross-I am terrified!


ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Pooraa Sathigur Ras Milai Gur Thaarae Har Naao ||1|| Rehaao ||
पूरा सतिगुरु रसि मिलै गुरु तारे हरि नाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The Perfect True Guru, in His Pleasure, has met with me; the Guru has saved me, through the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||


ਚਲਾ ਚਲਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
Chalaa Chalaa Jae Karee Jaanaa Chalanehaar ||
चला चला जे करी जाणा चलणहारु ॥
I may say, ""I am going, I am going"", but I know that, in the end, I must really go.


ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
Jo Aaeiaa So Chalasee Amar S Gur Karathaar ||
जो आइआ सो चलसी अमरु सु गुरु करतारु ॥
Whoever comes must also go. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal.


ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
Bhee Sachaa Saalaahanaa Sachai Thhaan Piaar ||2||
भी सचा सालाहणा सचै थानि पिआरु ॥२॥
So praise the True One continually, and love His Place of Truth. ||2||


ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥
Dhar Ghar Mehalaa Sohanae Pakae Kott Hajaar ||
दर घर महला सोहणे पके कोट हजार ॥
Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts,


ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
Hasathee Ghorrae Paakharae Lasakar Lakh Apaar ||
हसती घोड़े पाखरे लसकर लख अपार ॥
Elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies


ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥
Kis Hee Naal N Chaliaa Khap Khap Mueae Asaar ||3||
किस ही नालि न चलिआ खपि खपि मुए असार ॥३॥
-none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet, the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ||3||


ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
Sueinaa Rupaa Sancheeai Maal Jaal Janjaal ||
सुइना रुपा संचीऐ मालु जालु जंजालु ॥
You may gather gold and sliver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.


ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
Sabh Jag Mehi Dhohee Faereeai Bin Naavai Sir Kaal ||
सभ जग महि दोही फेरीऐ बिनु नावै सिरि कालु ॥
You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head.


ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥
Pindd Parrai Jeeo Khaelasee Badhafailee Kiaa Haal ||4||
पिंडु पड़ै जीउ खेलसी बदफैली किआ हालु ॥४॥
When the body falls, the play of life is over; what shall be the condition of the evil-doers then? ||4||


ਪੁਤਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਐ ਨਾਰੀ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰ ॥
Puthaa Dhaekh Vigaseeai Naaree Saej Bhathaar ||
पुता देखि विगसीऐ नारी सेज भतार ॥
The husband is delighted seeing his sons, and his wife upon his bed.


ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
Choaa Chandhan Laaeeai Kaaparr Roop Seegaar ||
चोआ चंदनु लाईऐ कापड़ु रूपु सीगारु ॥
He applies sandalwood and scented oils, and dresses himself in his beautiful clothes.


ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
Khaehoo Khaeh Ralaaeeai Shhodd Chalai Ghar Baar ||5||
खेहू खेह रलाईऐ छोडि चलै घर बारु ॥५॥
But dust shall mix with dust, and he shall depart, leaving hearth and home behind. ||5||


ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਈਐ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਉ ਕਿ ਖਾਨੁ ॥
Mehar Malook Kehaaeeai Raajaa Raao K Khaan ||
महर मलूक कहाईऐ राजा राउ कि खानु ॥
He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord;


ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਉ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਜਲਿ ਬਲੀਐ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥
Choudhharee Raao Sadhaaeeai Jal Baleeai Abhimaan ||
चउधरी राउ सदाईऐ जलि बलीऐ अभिमान ॥
He may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.


ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥
Manamukh Naam Visaariaa Jio Ddav Dhadhhaa Kaan ||6||
मनमुखि नामु विसारिआ जिउ डवि दधा कानु ॥६॥
The self-willed manmukh has forgotten the Naam. He is like straw, burning in the forest fire. ||6||


ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
Houmai Kar Kar Jaaeisee Jo Aaeiaa Jag Maahi ||
हउमै करि करि जाइसी जो आइआ जग माहि ॥
Whoever comes into the world and indulges in ego, must depart.
