लेखा इको आवहु जाहु ॥१॥
According to the account of our actions, we come and go in reincarnation. ||1||
ਕਾਹੇ ਜੀਅ ਕਰਹਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

काहे जीअ करहि चतुराई ॥
Why, O soul, do you try such clever tricks?
ਲੇਵੈ ਦੇਵੈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

लेवै देवै ढिल न पाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Taking away and giving back, God does not delay. ||1||Pause||
ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
Thaerae Jeea Jeeaa Kaa Thohi ||
तेरे जीअ जीआ का तोहि ॥
All beings belong to You; all beings are Yours. O Lord and Master,
ਕਿਤ ਕਉ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਵਹਿ ਰੋਹਿ ॥
Kith Ko Saahib Aavehi Rohi ||
कित कउ साहिब आवहि रोहि ॥
How can You become angry with them?
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਵਹਿ ਰੋਹਿ ॥
Jae Thoo Saahib Aavehi Rohi ||
जे तू साहिब आवहि रोहि ॥
Even if You, O Lord and Master, become angry with them,
ਤੂ ਓਨਾ ਕਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਓਹਿ ॥੨॥
Thoo Ounaa Kaa Thaerae Ouhi ||2||
तू ओना का तेरे ओहि ॥२॥
Still, You are theirs, and they are Yours. ||2||
ਅਸੀ ਬੋਲਵਿਗਾੜ ਵਿਗਾੜਹ ਬੋਲ ॥
Asee Bolavigaarr Vigaarreh Bol ||
असी बोलविगाड़ विगाड़ह बोल ॥
We are foul-mouthed; we spoil everything with our foul words.
ਤੂ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤੋਲਹਿ ਤੋਲ ॥
Thoo Nadharee Andhar Tholehi Thol ||
तू नदरी अंदरि तोलहि तोल ॥
You weigh us in the balance of Your Glance of Grace.
ਜਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਤਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ॥
Jeh Karanee Theh Pooree Math ||
जह करणी तह पूरी मति ॥
When one's actions are right, the understanding is perfect.
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ॥੩॥
Karanee Baajhahu Ghattae Ghatt ||3||
करणी बाझहु घटे घटि ॥३॥
Without good deeds, it becomes more and more deficient. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

प्रणवति नानक गिआनी कैसा होइ ॥
Prays Nanak, what is the nature of the spiritual people?
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Aap Pashhaanai Boojhai Soe ||
आपु पछाणै बूझै सोइ ॥
They are self-realized; they understand God.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Gur Parasaadh Karae Beechaar ||
गुर परसादि करे बीचारु ॥
By Guru's Grace, they contemplate Him;
ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੩੦॥
So Giaanee Dharageh Paravaan ||4||30||
सो गिआनी दरगह परवाणु ॥४॥३०॥
Such spiritual people are honored in His Court. ||4||30||

Thoo Dhareeaao Dhaanaa Beenaa Mai Mashhulee Kaisae Anth Lehaa ||
तू दरीआउ दाना बीना मै मछुली कैसे अंतु लहा ॥
You are the River, All-knowing and All-seeing. I am just a fish-how can I find Your limit?
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸੀ ਫੂਟਿ ਮਰਾ ॥੧॥
Jeh Jeh Dhaekhaa Theh Theh Thoo Hai Thujh Thae Nikasee Foott Maraa ||1||
जह जह देखा तह तह तू है तुझ ते निकसी फूटि मरा ॥१॥
Wherever I look, You are there. Outside of You, I would burst and die. ||1||
ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਜਾਲੀ ॥

न जाणा मेउ न जाणा जाली ॥
I do not know of the fisherman, and I do not know of the net.
ਜਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਸਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jaa Dhukh Laagai Thaa Thujhai Samaalee ||1|| Rehaao ||
जा दुखु लागै ता तुझै समाली ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
But when the pain comes, then I call upon You. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਮੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
Thoo Bharapoor Jaaniaa Mai Dhoor ||
तू भरपूरि जानिआ मै दूरि ॥
You are present everywhere. I had thought that You were far away.
ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕਰੀ ਸੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
Jo Kashh Karee S Thaerai Hadhoor ||
जो कछु करी सु तेरै हदूरि ॥
Whatever I do, I do in Your Presence.
ਤੂ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਹਉ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਾਉ ॥
Thoo Dhaekhehi Ho Mukar Paao ||
तू देखहि हउ मुकरि पाउ ॥
You see all my actions, and yet I deny them.
ਤੇਰੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
Thaerai Kanm N Thaerai Naae ||2||
तेरै कमि न तेरै नाइ ॥२॥
I have not worked for You, or Your Name. ||2||
ਜੇਤਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਹਉ ਖਾਉ ॥
Jaethaa Dhaehi Thaethaa Ho Khaao ||
जेता देहि तेता हउ खाउ ॥
Whatever You give me, that is what I eat.
ਬਿਆ ਦਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
Biaa Dhar Naahee Kai Dhar Jaao ||
बिआ दरु नाही कै दरि जाउ ॥
There is no other door-unto which door should I go?
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
Naanak Eaek Kehai Aradhaas ||
नानकु एक कहै अरदासि ॥
Nanak offers this one prayer:
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
Jeeo Pindd Sabh Thaerai Paas ||3||
जीउ पिंडु सभु तेरै पासि ॥३॥
This body and soul are totally Yours. ||3||
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਆਪੇ ਮੰਝਿ ਮਿਆਨ ॥
Aapae Naerrai Dhoor Aapae Hee Aapae Manjh Miaanuo ||
आपे नेड़ै दूरि आपे ही आपे मंझि मिआनो ॥
He Himself is near, and He Himself is far away; He Himself is in-between.
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਹਾਨ ॥
Aapae Vaekhai Sunae Aapae Hee Kudharath Karae Jehaanuo ||
आपे वेखै सुणे आपे ही कुदरति करे जहानो ॥
He Himself beholds, and He Himself listens. By His Creative Power, He created the world.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਨ ॥੪॥੩੧॥
Jo This Bhaavai Naanakaa Hukam Soee Paravaanuo ||4||31||
जो तिसु भावै नानका हुकमु सोई परवानो ॥४॥३१॥
Whatever pleases Him, O Nanak-that Command is acceptable. ||4||31||

Why should the created beings feel pride in their minds?
ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੇ ਕੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Dhaevanehaarae Kai Hathh Dhaan ||
देवणहारे कै हथि दानु ॥
The Gift is in the Hands of the Great Giver.
ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Bhaavai Dhaee N Dhaeee Soe ||
भावै देइ न देई सोइ ॥
As it pleases Him, He may give, or not give.
ਕੀਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਐ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
Keethae Kai Kehiai Kiaa Hoe ||1||
कीते कै कहिऐ किआ होइ ॥१॥
What can be done by the order of the created beings? ||1||
ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ॥
Aapae Sach Bhaavai This Sach ||
आपे सचु भावै तिसु सचु ॥
He Himself is True; Truth is pleasing to His Will.
ਅੰਧਾ ਕਚਾ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Andhhaa Kachaa Kach Nikach ||1|| Rehaao ||
अंधा कचा कचु निकचु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The spiritually blind are unripe and imperfect, inferior and worthless. ||1||Pause||
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਆਰਾਉ ॥
Jaa Kae Rukh Birakh Aaraao ||
जा के रुख बिरख आराउ ॥
The One who owns the trees of the forest and the plants of the garden
ਜੇਹੀ ਧਾਤੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਨਾਉ ॥
Jaehee Dhhaath Thaehaa Thin Naao ||
जेही धातु तेहा तिन नाउ ॥
According to their nature, He gives them all their names.
ਫੁਲੁ ਭਾਉ ਫਲੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇ ॥
Ful Bhaao Fal Likhiaa Paae ||
फुलु भाउ फलु लिखिआ पाइ ॥
The Flower and the Fruit of the Lord's Love are obtained by pre-ordained destiny.
ਆਪਿ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
Aap Beej Aapae Hee Khaae ||2||
आपि बीजि आपे ही खाइ ॥२॥
As we plant, so we harvest and eat. ||2||
ਕਚੀ ਕੰਧ ਕਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਜੁ ॥
Kachee Kandhh Kachaa Vich Raaj ||
कची कंध कचा विचि राजु ॥
The wall of the body is temporary, as is the soul-mason within it.
ਮਤਿ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
Math Aloonee Fikaa Saadh ||
मति अलूणी फिका सादु ॥
The flavor of the intellect is bland and insipid without the Salt.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਣੇ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
Naanak Aanae Aavai Raas ||
नानक आणे आवै रासि ॥
O Nanak, as He wills, He makes things right.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੩॥੩੨॥

विणु नावै नाही साबासि ॥३॥३२॥
Without the Name, no one is approved. ||3||32||

ਅਛਲ ਛਲਾਈ ਨਹ ਛਲੈ ਨਹ ਘਾਉ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਕੈ ॥
Ashhal Shhalaaee Neh Shhalai Neh Ghaao Kattaaraa Kar Sakai ||
अछल छलाई नह छलै नह घाउ कटारा करि सकै ॥
The Undeceiveable is not deceived by deception. He cannot be wounded by any dagger.
ਜਿਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਇਸੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਟਲ ਪਲੈ ॥੧॥
Jio Saahib Raakhai Thio Rehai Eis Lobhee Kaa Jeeo Ttal Palai ||1||
जिउ साहिबु राखै तिउ रहै इसु लोभी का जीउ टल पलै ॥१॥
As our Lord and Master keeps us, so do we exist. The soul of this greedy person is tossed this way and that. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਲ ਦੀਵਾ ਕਿਉ ਜਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Bin Thael Dheevaa Kio Jalai ||1|| Rehaao ||
बिनु तेल दीवा किउ जलै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Without the oil, how can the lamp be lit? ||1||Pause||
ਪੋਥੀ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
Pothhee Puraan Kamaaeeai ||
पोथी पुराण कमाईऐ ॥
Let the reading of your prayer book be the oil,
ਭਉ ਵਟੀ ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Bho Vattee Eith Than Paaeeai ||
भउ वटी इतु तनि पाईऐ ॥
And let the Fear of God be the wick for the lamp of this body.
ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝਣੁ ਆਣਿ ਜਲਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
Sach Boojhan Aan Jalaaeeai ||2||
सचु बूझणु आणि जलाईऐ ॥२॥
Light this lamp with the understanding of Truth. ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ਦੀਵਾ ਇਉ ਜਲੈ ॥
Eihu Thael Dheevaa Eio Jalai ||
इहु तेलु दीवा इउ जलै ॥
Use this oil to light this lamp.
ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤਉ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Kar Chaanan Saahib Tho Milai ||1|| Rehaao ||
करि चानणु साहिब तउ मिलै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Light it, and meet your Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||
ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਾਣੀਆ ॥
Eith Than Laagai Baaneeaa ||
इतु तनि लागै बाणीआ ॥
This body is softened with the Word of the Guru's Bani;
ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਣੀਆ ॥
Sukh Hovai Saev Kamaaneeaa ||
सुखु होवै सेव कमाणीआ ॥
You shall find peace, doing seva (selfless service).
