चारे वरन आखै सभु कोई ॥
Everyone says that there are four castes, four social classes.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
Breham Bindh Thae Sabh Oupath Hoee ||2||
ब्रहमु बिंद ते सभ ओपति होई ॥२॥
They all emanate from the drop of God's Seed. ||2||
ਮਾਟੀ ਏਕ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
Maattee Eaek Sagal Sansaaraa ||
माटी एक सगल संसारा ॥
The entire universe is made of the same clay.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਘੜੈ ਕੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
Bahu Bidhh Bhaanddae Gharrai Kumhaaraa ||3||
बहु बिधि भांडे घड़ै कुम्हारा ॥३॥
The Potter has shaped it into all sorts of vessels. ||3||
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਕਾ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥
Panch Thath Mil Dhaehee Kaa Aakaaraa ||
पंच ततु मिलि देही का आकारा ॥
The five elements join together, to make up the form of the human body.
ਘਟਿ ਵਧਿ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
Ghatt Vadhh Ko Karai Beechaaraa ||4||
घटि वधि को करै बीचारा ॥४॥
Who can say which is less, and which is more? ||4||
ਕਹਤੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਕਰਮ ਬੰਧੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

कहतु नानक इहु जीउ करम बंधु होई ॥
Says Nanak, this soul is bound by its actions.

जोगी ग्रिही पंडित भेखधारी ॥
The Yogis, the householders, the Pandits, the religious scholars, and the beggars in religious robes
ਏ ਸੂਤੇ ਅਪਣੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
Eae Soothae Apanai Ahankaaree ||1||
ए सूते अपणै अहंकारी ॥१॥
- they are all asleep in egotism. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
Maaeiaa Madh Maathaa Rehiaa Soe ||
माइआ मदि माता रहिआ सोइ ॥
They are asleep, intoxicated with the wine of Maya.
ਜਾਗਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਮੂਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जागतु रहै न मूसै कोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Only those who remain awake and aware are not robbed. ||1||Pause||
ਸੋ ਜਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
So Jaagai Jis Sathigur Milai ||
सो जागै जिसु सतिगुरु मिलै ॥
One who has met the True Guru, remains awake and aware.
ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਓਹੁ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਕਰੈ ॥੨॥
Panch Dhooth Ouhu Vasagath Karai ||2||
पंच दूत ओहु वसगति करै ॥२॥
Such a person overpowers the five thieves. ||2||
ਸੋ ਜਾਗੈ ਜੋ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
So Jaagai Jo Thath Beechaarai ||
सो जागै जो ततु बीचारै ॥
One who contemplates the essence of reality remains awake and aware.
ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਅਵਰਾ ਨਹ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
Aap Marai Avaraa Neh Maarai ||3||
आपि मरै अवरा नह मारै ॥३॥
He kills his self-conceit, and does not kill anyone else. ||3||
ਸੋ ਜਾਗੈ ਜੋ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
So Jaagai Jo Eaeko Jaanai ||
सो जागै जो एको जाणै ॥
One who knows the One Lord remains awake and aware.
ਪਰਕਿਰਤਿ ਛੋਡੈ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥
Parakirath Shhoddai Thath Pashhaanai ||4||
परकिरति छोडै ततु पछाणै ॥४॥
He abandons the service of others, and realizes the essence of reality. ||4||
ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Chahu Varanaa Vich Jaagai Koe ||
चहु वरना विचि जागै कोइ ॥
Of the four castes, whoever remains awake and aware
ਜਮੈ ਕਾਲੈ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
Jamai Kaalai Thae Shhoottai Soe ||5||
जमै कालै ते छूटै सोइ ॥५॥
Is released from birth and death. ||5||
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

Whoever the Lord keeps in His Sanctuary,
ਸਾਚੇ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
Saachae Laagai Saachaa Fal Paaee ||1||
साचे लागै साचा फलु पाई ॥१॥
Is attached to the Truth, and receives the fruit of Truth. ||1||
ਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਸਿਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥

रे जन कै सिउ करहु पुकारा ॥
O mortal, unto whom will you complain?

हुकमे होआ हुकमे वरतारा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

एहु आकारु तेरा है धारा ॥
This Creation was established by You.
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਰਤ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Khin Mehi Binasai Karath N Laagai Baaraa ||2||
खिन महि बिनसै करत न लागै बारा ॥२॥
In an instant You destroy it, and You create it again without a moment's delay. ||2||
ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਇਕੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

करि प्रसादु इकु खेलु दिखाइआ ॥
By His Grace, He has staged this Play.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
Gur Kirapaa Thae Param Padh Paaeiaa ||3||
गुर किरपा ते परम पदु पाइआ ॥३॥
By the Guru's Merciful Grace, I have obtained the supreme status. ||3||
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਸੋਇ ॥

जेहा कराए तेहा करी सीगारु ॥१॥
As He inspires me, I adorn myself. ||1||

उसतति निंदा करे किआ कोई ॥
How can anyone praise or slander anyone else?
ਜਾਂ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥

जां आपे वरतै एको सोई ॥२॥
The One Lord Himself is pervading and permeating all. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਿਰਮ ਕਸਾਈ ॥

गुर परसादी पिरम कसाई ॥
By Guru's Grace, I am attracted by His Love.
ਮਿਲਉਗੀ ਦਇਆਲ ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਵਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
Milougee Dhaeiaal Panch Sabadh Vajaaee ||3||
मिलउगी दइआल पंच सबद वजाई ॥३॥
I shall meet with my Merciful Lord, and vibrate the Panch Shabad, the Five Primal Sounds. ||3||

He alone is a silent sage, who subdues his mind's duality.
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
Dhubidhhaa Maar Breham Beechaarae ||1||
दुबिधा मारि ब्रहमु बीचारे ॥१॥
Subduing his duality, he contemplates God. ||1||
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਖੋਜਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
Eis Man Ko Koee Khojahu Bhaaee ||
इसु मन कउ कोई खोजहु भाई ॥
Let each person examine his own mind, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਮਨੁ ਖੋਜਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मनु खोजत नामु नउ निधि पाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

The Creator created the world, upon the foundation of worldly love and attachment.
ਮਮਤਾ ਲਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Mamathaa Laae Bharam Bhuolaaeiaa ||2||
ममता लाइ भरमि भोलाइआ ॥२॥
Attaching it to possessiveness, He has led it into confusion with doubt. ||2||
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਪਿੰਡ ਪਰਾਣਾ ॥
Eis Man Thae Sabh Pindd Paraanaa ||
इसु मन ते सभ पिंड पराणा ॥
From this Mind come all bodies, and the breath of life.
ਮਨ ਕੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥੩॥
Man Kai Veechaar Hukam Bujh Samaanaa ||3||
मन कै वीचारि हुकमु बुझि समाणा ॥३॥
By mental contemplation, the mortal realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command, and merges in Him. ||3||
