Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
Manamukh Parrehi Panddith Kehaavehi ||
मनमुख पड़हि पंडित कहावहि ॥
The self-willed manmukhs read and recite; they are called Pandits-spiritual scholars.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Dhoojai Bhaae Mehaa Dhukh Paavehi ||
दूजै भाइ महा दुखु पावहि ॥
But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
Bikhiaa Maathae Kishh Soojhai Naahee Fir Fir Joonee Aavaniaa ||1||
बिखिआ माते किछु सूझै नाही फिरि फिरि जूनी आवणिआ ॥१॥
Intoxicated with vice, they understand nothing at all. They are reincarnated, over and over again. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
Ho Vaaree Jeeo Vaaree Houmai Maar Milaavaniaa ||
हउ वारी जीउ वारी हउमै मारि मिलावणिआ ॥
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who subdue their ego, and unite with the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gur Saevaa Thae Har Man Vasiaa Har Ras Sehaj Peeaavaniaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
गुर सेवा ते हरि मनि वसिआ हरि रसु सहजि पीआवणिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
They serve the Guru, and the Lord dwells within their minds; they intuitively drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
Vaedh Parrehi Har Ras Nehee Aaeiaa ||
वेदु पड़हि हरि रसु नही आइआ ॥
The Pandits read the Vedas, but they do not obtain the Lord's essence.
ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Vaadh Vakhaanehi Mohae Maaeiaa ||
वादु वखाणहि मोहे माइआ ॥
Intoxicated with Maya, they argue and debate.
ਅਗਿਆਨਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
Agiaanamathee Sadhaa Andhhiaaraa Guramukh Boojh Har Gaavaniaa ||2||
अगिआनमती सदा अंधिआरा गुरमुखि बूझि हरि गावणिआ ॥२॥
The foolish intellectuals are forever in spiritual darkness. The Gurmukhs understand, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||
ਅਕਥੋ ਕਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥
Akathho Kathheeai Sabadh Suhaavai ||
अकथो कथीऐ सबदि सुहावै ॥
The Indescribable is described only through the beauteous Word of the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
Guramathee Man Sacho Bhaavai ||
गुरमती मनि सचो भावै ॥
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Truth becomes pleasing to the mind.
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਵਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
Sacho Sach Ravehi Dhin Raathee Eihu Man Sach Rangaavaniaa ||3||
सचो सचु रवहि दिनु राती इहु मनु सचि रंगावणिआ ॥३॥
Those who speak of the truest of the true, day and night-their minds are imbued with the Truth. ||3||
ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
Jo Sach Rathae Thin Sacho Bhaavai ||
जो सचि रते तिन सचो भावै ॥
Those who are attuned to Truth, love the Truth.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ ॥
Aapae Dhaee N Pashhothaavai ||
आपे देइ न पछोतावै ॥
The Lord Himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Sadhaa Sach Jaathaa Mil Sachae Sukh Paavaniaa ||4||
गुर कै सबदि सदा सचु जाता मिलि सचे सुखु पावणिआ ॥४॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the True Lord is known forever; meeting the True One, peace is found. ||4||
ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Koorr Kusath Thinaa Mail N Laagai ||
कूड़ु कुसतु तिना मैलु न लागै ॥
The filth of fraud and falsehood does not stick to those who,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Anadhin Jaagai ||
गुर परसादी अनदिनु जागै ॥
By Guru's Grace, remain awake and aware, night and day.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
Niramal Naam Vasai Ghatt Bheethar Jothee Joth Milaavaniaa ||5||
निरमल नामु वसै घट भीतरि जोती जोति मिलावणिआ ॥५॥
The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within their hearts; their light merges into the Light. ||5||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥
Thrai Gun Parrehi Har Thath N Jaanehi ||
त्रै गुण पड़हि हरि ततु न जाणहि ॥
They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality of the Lord.
ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥
Moolahu Bhulae Gur Sabadh N Pashhaanehi ||
मूलहु भुले गुर सबदु न पछाणहि ॥
They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਮੋਹ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
Moh Biaapae Kishh Soojhai Naahee Gur Sabadhee Har Paavaniaa ||6||
मोह बिआपे किछु सूझै नाही गुर सबदी हरि पावणिआ ॥६॥
They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||
ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Vaedh Pukaarai Thribidhh Maaeiaa ||
वेदु पुकारै त्रिबिधि माइआ ॥
The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
Manamukh N Boojhehi Dhoojai Bhaaeiaa ||
मनमुख न बूझहि दूजै भाइआ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
Thrai Gun Parrehi Har Eaek N Jaanehi Bin Boojhae Dhukh Paavaniaa ||7||
त्रै गुण पड़हि हरि एकु न जाणहि बिनु बूझे दुखु पावणिआ ॥७॥
They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7||
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Jaa This Bhaavai Thaa Aap Milaaeae ||
जा तिसु भावै ता आपि मिलाए ॥
When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
Gur Sabadhee Sehasaa Dhookh Chukaaeae ||
गुर सबदी सहसा दूखु चुकाए ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੦॥੩੧॥
Naanak Naavai Kee Sachee Vaddiaaee Naamo Mann Sukh Paavaniaa ||8||30||31||
नानक नावै की सची वडिआई नामो मंनि सुखु पावणिआ ॥८॥३०॥३१॥
O Nanak, True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31||

Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
Niragun Saragun Aapae Soee ||
निरगुणु सरगुणु आपे सोई ॥
The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well.
ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
Thath Pashhaanai So Panddith Hoee ||
ततु पछाणै सो पंडितु होई ॥
Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
Aap Tharai Sagalae Kul Thaarai Har Naam Mann Vasaavaniaa ||1||
आपि तरै सगले कुल तारै हरि नामु मंनि वसावणिआ ॥१॥
They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord's Name in the mind. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਖਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
Ho Vaaree Jeeo Vaaree Har Ras Chakh Saadh Paavaniaa ||
हउ वारी जीउ वारी हरि रसु चखि सादु पावणिआ ॥
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Har Ras Chaakhehi Sae Jan Niramal Niramal Naam Dhhiaavaniaa ||1|| Rehaao ||
हरि रसु चाखहि से जन निरमल निरमल नामु धिआवणिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਸੋ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
So Nihakaramee Jo Sabadh Beechaarae ||
सो निहकरमी जो सबदु बीचारे ॥
Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
Anthar Thath Giaan Houmai Maarae ||
अंतरि ततु गिआनि हउमै मारे ॥
They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being.
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
Naam Padhaarathh No Nidhh Paaeae Thrai Gun Maett Samaavaniaa ||2||
नामु पदारथु नउ निधि पाए त्रै गुण मेटि समावणिआ ॥२॥
They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
Houmai Karai Nihakaramee N Hovai ||
हउमै करै निहकरमी न होवै ॥
Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Houmai Khovai ||
गुर परसादी हउमै खोवै ॥
It is only by Guru's Grace that one is rid of ego.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
Anthar Bibaek Sadhaa Aap Veechaarae Gur Sabadhee Gun Gaavaniaa ||3||
अंतरि बिबेकु सदा आपु वीचारे गुर सबदी गुण गावणिआ ॥३॥
Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they sing the Lord's Glorious Praises. ||3||
ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Har Sar Saagar Niramal Soee ||
हरि सरु सागरु निरमलु सोई ॥
The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean.
ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
Santh Chugehi Nith Guramukh Hoee ||
संत चुगहि नित गुरमुखि होई ॥
The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean.
ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
Eisanaan Karehi Sadhaa Dhin Raathee Houmai Mail Chukaavaniaa ||4||
इसनानु करहि सदा दिनु राती हउमै मैलु चुकावणिआ ॥४॥
They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4||
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
Niramal Hansaa Praem Piaar ||
निरमल हंसा प्रेम पिआरि ॥
The pure swans, with love and affection,
ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
Har Sar Vasai Houmai Maar ||
हरि सरि वसै हउमै मारि ॥
Dwell in the Ocean of the Lord, and subdue their ego.
