ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਾ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jaa Thudhh Bhaavehi Thaa Karehi Bibhoothaa Sinn(g)ee Naadh Vajaavehi ||
जा तुधु भावहि ता करहि बिभूता सिंङी नादु वजावहि ॥
When it pleases You, we smear our bodies with ashes, and blow the horn and the conch shell.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਮੁਲਾ ਸੇਖ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jaa Thudhh Bhaavai Thaa Parrehi Kathaebaa Mulaa Saekh Kehaavehi ||
जा तुधु भावै ता पड़हि कतेबा मुला सेख कहावहि ॥
When it pleases You, we read the Islamic Scriptures, and are acclaimed as Mullahs and Shaykhs.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jaa Thudhh Bhaavai Thaa Hovehi Raajae Ras Kas Bahuth Kamaavehi ||
जा तुधु भावै ता होवहि राजे रस कस बहुतु कमावहि ॥
When it pleases You, we become kings, and enjoy all sorts of tastes and pleasures.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਰ ਮੁੰਡੀ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jaa Thudhh Bhaavai Thaeg Vagaavehi Sir Munddee Katt Jaavehi ||
जा तुधु भावै तेग वगावहि सिर मुंडी कटि जावहि ॥
When it pleases You, we wield the sword, and cut off the heads of our enemies.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
Jaa Thudhh Bhaavai Jaahi Dhisanthar Sun Galaa Ghar Aavehi ||
जा तुधु भावै जाहि दिसंतरि सुणि गला घरि आवहि ॥
When it pleases You, we go out to foreign lands; hearing news of home, we come back again.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਇ ਰਚਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
Jaa Thudhh Bhaavai Naae Rachaavehi Thudhh Bhaanae Thoon Bhaavehi ||
जा तुधु भावै नाइ रचावहि तुधु भाणे तूं भावहि ॥
When it pleases You, we are attuned to the Name, and when it pleases You, we become pleasing to You.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
Naanak Eaek Kehai Baenanthee Hor Sagalae Koorr Kamaavehi ||1||
नानकु एक कहै बेनंती होरि सगले कूड़ु कमावहि ॥१॥
Nanak utters this one prayer; everything else is just the practice of falsehood. ||1||

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਵਡਾ ਸਭਿ ਵਡਿਆਂਈਆ ਚੰਗੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
Jaa Thoon Vaddaa Sabh Vaddiaaaneeaa Changai Changaa Hoee ||
जा तूं वडा सभि वडिआंईआ चंगै चंगा होई ॥
You are so Great-all Greatness flows from You. You are So Good-Goodness radiates from You.
ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਕੂੜਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Jaa Thoon Sachaa Thaa Sabh Ko Sachaa Koorraa Koe N Koee ||
जा तूं सचा ता सभु को सचा कूड़ा कोइ न कोई ॥
You are True-all that flows from You is True. Nothing at all is false.
ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਚਲਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
Aakhan Vaekhan Bolan Chalan Jeevan Maranaa Dhhaath ||
आखणु वेखणु बोलणु चलणु जीवणु मरणा धातु ॥
Talking, seeing, speaking, walking, living and dying-all these are transitory.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥
Hukam Saaj Hukamai Vich Rakhai Naanak Sachaa Aap ||2||
हुकमु साजि हुकमै विचि रखै नानक सचा आपि ॥२॥
By the Hukam of His Command, He creates, and in His Command, He keeps us. O Nanak, He Himself is True. ||2||

Serve the True Guru fearlessly, and your doubt shall be dispelled.

सतिगुरु आखै कार सु कार कमाईऐ ॥
Do that work which the True Guru asks you to do.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
Sathigur Hoe Dhaeiaal Th Naam Dhhiaaeeai ||
सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु त नामु धिआईऐ ॥
When the True Guru becomes merciful, we meditate on the Naam.
ਲਾਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Laahaa Bhagath S Saar Guramukh Paaeeai ||
लाहा भगति सु सारु गुरमुखि पाईऐ ॥
The profit of devotional worship is excellent. It is obtained by the Gurmukh.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
Manamukh Koorr Gubaar Koorr Kamaaeeai ||
मनमुखि कूड़ु गुबारु कूड़ु कमाईऐ ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are trapped in the darkness of falsehood; they practice nothing but falsehood.
ਸਚੇ ਦੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਚਵਾਂਈਐ ॥
Sachae Dhai Dhar Jaae Sach Chavaaneeai ||
सचे दै दरि जाइ सचु चवांईऐ ॥
Go to the Gate of Truth, and speak the Truth.
ਸਚੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥
Sachai Andhar Mehal Sach Bulaaeeai ||
सचै अंदरि महलि सचि बुलाईऐ ॥
The True Lord calls the true ones to the Mansion of His Presence.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੧੫॥

नानक सचु सदा सचिआरु सचि समाईऐ ॥१५॥
O Nanak, the true ones are forever true; they are absorbed in the True Lord. ||15||

Kal Kaathee Raajae Kaasaaee Dhharam Pankh Kar Ouddariaa ||
कलि काती राजे कासाई धरमु पंख करि उडरिआ ॥
The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the knife, and the kings are butchers; righteousness has sprouted wings and flown away.
ਕੂੜੁ ਅਮਾਵਸ ਸਚੁ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹ ਚੜਿਆ ॥
Koorr Amaavas Sach Chandhramaa Dheesai Naahee Keh Charriaa ||
कूड़ु अमावस सचु चंद्रमा दीसै नाही कह चड़िआ ॥
In this dark night of falsehood, the moon of Truth is not visible anywhere.
ਹਉ ਭਾਲਿ ਵਿਕੁੰਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
Ho Bhaal Vikunnee Hoee ||
हउ भालि विकुंनी होई ॥
I have searched in vain, and I am so confused;
ਆਧੇਰੈ ਰਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Aadhhaerai Raahu N Koee ||
आधेरै राहु न कोई ॥
In this darkness, I cannot find the path.
ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਈ ॥
Vich Houmai Kar Dhukh Roee ||
विचि हउमै करि दुखु रोई ॥
In egotism, they cry out in pain.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਨਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

कहु नानक किनि बिधि गति होई ॥१॥

कलि कीरति परगटु चानणु संसारि ॥
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise has appeared as a Light in the world.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਉਤਰੈ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
Guramukh Koee Outharai Paar ||
गुरमुखि कोई उतरै पारि ॥
How rare are those few Gurmukhs who swim across to the other side!
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥
Jis No Nadhar Karae This Dhaevai ||
जिस नो नदरि करे तिसु देवै ॥
The Lord bestows His Glance of Grace;
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੋ ਲੇਵੈ ॥੨॥
Naanak Guramukh Rathan So Laevai ||2||
नानक गुरमुखि रतनु सो लेवै ॥२॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh receives the jewel. ||2||

भगता तै सैसारीआ जोड़ु कदे न आइआ ॥
Between the Lord's devotees and the people of the world, there can never be any true alliance.
ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਦਾ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
Karathaa Aap Abhul Hai N Bhulai Kisai Dhaa Bhulaaeiaa ||
करता आपि अभुलु है न भुलै किसै दा भुलाइआ ॥
The Creator Himself is infallible. He cannot be fooled; no one can fool Him.
ਭਗਤ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
Bhagath Aapae Maelian Jinee Sacho Sach Kamaaeiaa ||
भगत आपे मेलिअनु जिनी सचो सचु कमाइआ ॥
He blends His devotees with Himself; they practice Truth, and only Truth.
ਸੈਸਾਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
Saisaaree Aap Khuaaeian Jinee Koorr Bol Bol Bikh Khaaeiaa ||
सैसारी आपि खुआइअनु जिनी कूड़ु बोलि बोलि बिखु खाइआ ॥
The Lord Himself leads the people of the world astray; they tell lies, and by telling lies, they eat poison.
ਚਲਣ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਵਿਸੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
Chalan Saar N Jaananee Kaam Karodhh Vis Vadhhaaeiaa ||
चलण सार न जाणनी कामु करोधु विसु वधाइआ ॥
They do not recognize the ultimate reality, that we all must go; they continue to cultivate the poisons of sexual desire and anger.
ਭਗਤ ਕਰਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
Bhagath Karan Har Chaakaree Jinee Anadhin Naam Dhhiaaeiaa ||
भगत करनि हरि चाकरी जिनी अनदिनु नामु धिआइआ ॥
The devotees serve the Lord; night and day, they meditate on the Naam.
ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜਿਨੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
Dhaasan Dhaas Hoe Kai Jinee Vichahu Aap Gavaaeiaa ||
दासनि दास होइ कै जिनी विचहु आपु गवाइआ ॥
Becoming the slaves of the Lord's slaves, they eradicate selfishness and conceit from within.
ਓਨਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
Ounaa Khasamai Kai Dhar Mukh Oujalae Sachai Sabadh Suhaaeiaa ||16||
ओना खसमै कै दरि मुख उजले सचै सबदि सुहाइआ ॥१६॥
In the Court of their Lord and Master, their faces are radiant; they are embellished and exalted with the True Word of the Shabad. ||16||

ਸਬਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ॥
Sabaahee Saalaah Jinee Dhhiaaeiaa Eik Man ||
सबाही सालाह जिनी धिआइआ इक मनि ॥
Those who praise the Lord in the early hours of the morning and meditate on Him single-mindedly,
ਸੇਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਹ ਵਖਤੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਲੜਿ ਮੁਏ ॥
Saeee Poorae Saah Vakhathai Oupar Larr Mueae ||
सेई पूरे साह वखतै उपरि लड़ि मुए ॥
Are the perfect kings; at the right time, they die fighting.
ਦੂਜੈ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਰਾਹ ਮਨ ਕੀਆ ਮਤੀ ਖਿੰਡੀਆ ॥
Dhoojai Bahuthae Raah Man Keeaa Mathee Khinddeeaa ||
दूजै बहुते राह मन कीआ मती खिंडीआ ॥
In the second watch, the focus of the mind is scattered in all sorts of ways.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਏ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਹਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ॥
Bahuth Peae Asagaah Gothae Khaahi N Nikalehi ||
बहुतु पए असगाह गोते खाहि न निकलहि ॥
So many fall into the bottomless pit; they are dragged under, and they cannot get out again.
