आइआ गइआ मुइआ नाउ ॥
He came and he went, and now, even his name has died.
ਪਿਛੈ ਪਤਲਿ ਸਦਿਹੁ ਕਾਵ ॥

पिछै पतलि सदिहु काव ॥
After he left, food was offered on leaves, and the birds were called to come and eat.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

नानक मनमुखि अंधु पिआरु ॥
O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs love the darkness.
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਡੁਬਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Baajh Guroo Ddubaa Sansaar ||2||
बाझु गुरू डुबा संसारु ॥२॥
Without the Guru, the world is drowning. ||2||

ਦਸ ਬਾਲਤਣਿ ਬੀਸ ਰਵਣਿ ਤੀਸਾ ਕਾ ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
Dhas Baalathan Bees Ravan Theesaa Kaa Sundhar Kehaavai ||
दस बालतणि बीस रवणि तीसा का सुंदरु कहावै ॥
At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.
ਚਾਲੀਸੀ ਪੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਪਚਾਸੀ ਪਗੁ ਖਿਸੈ ਸਠੀ ਕੇ ਬੋਢੇਪਾ ਆਵੈ ॥
Chaaleesee Pur Hoe Pachaasee Pag Khisai Sathee Kae Bodtaepaa Aavai ||
चालीसी पुरु होइ पचासी पगु खिसै सठी के बोढेपा आवै ॥
At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him.
ਸਤਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਅਸੀਹਾਂ ਕਾ ਵਿਉਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Sathar Kaa Mathiheen Aseehaan Kaa Viouhaar N Paavai ||
सतरि का मतिहीणु असीहां का विउहारु न पावै ॥
At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.
ਨਵੈ ਕਾ ਸਿਹਜਾਸਣੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਪ ਬਲੁ ॥
Navai Kaa Sihajaasanee Mool N Jaanai Ap Bal ||
नवै का सिहजासणी मूलि न जाणै अप बलु ॥
At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.
ਢੰਢੋਲਿਮੁ ਢੂਢਿਮੁ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗੁ ਧੂਏ ਕਾ ਧਵਲਹਰੁ ॥੩॥
Dtandtolim Dtoodtim Ddith Mai Naanak Jag Dhhooeae Kaa Dhhavalehar ||3||
ढंढोलिमु ढूढिमु डिठु मै नानक जगु धूए का धवलहरु ॥३॥
After seeking and searching for such a long time, O Nanak, I have seen that the world is just a mansion of smoke. ||3||

Thoon Karathaa Purakh Aganm Hai Aap Srisatt Oupaathee ||
तूं करता पुरखु अगमु है आपि स्रिसटि उपाती ॥
You, O Creator Lord, are Unfathomable. You Yourself created the Universe,
ਰੰਗ ਪਰੰਗ ਉਪਾਰਜਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਤੀ ॥
Rang Parang Oupaarajanaa Bahu Bahu Bidhh Bhaathee ||
रंग परंग उपारजना बहु बहु बिधि भाती ॥
Its colors, qualities and varieties, in so many ways and forms.
ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈਐ ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਮਾਤੀ ॥
Thoon Jaanehi Jin Oupaaeeai Sabh Khael Thumaathee ||
तूं जाणहि जिनि उपाईऐ सभु खेलु तुमाती ॥
You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play.
ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥
Eik Aavehi Eik Jaahi Outh Bin Naavai Mar Jaathee ||
इकि आवहि इकि जाहि उठि बिनु नावै मरि जाती ॥
Some come, and some arise and depart; but without the Name, all are bound to die.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਿਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥
Guramukh Rang Chalooliaa Rang Har Rang Raathee ||
गुरमुखि रंगि चलूलिआ रंगि हरि रंगि राती ॥
The Gurmukhs are imbued with the deep crimson color of the poppy; they are dyed in the color of the Lord's Love.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਸਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤੀ ॥
So Saevahu Sath Niranjano Har Purakh Bidhhaathee ||
सो सेवहु सति निरंजनो हरि पुरखु बिधाती ॥
So serve the True and Pure Lord, the Supremely Powerful Architect of Destiny.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਵਡਾਤੀ ॥
Thoon Aapae Aap Sujaan Hai Vadd Purakh Vaddaathee ||
तूं आपे आपि सुजाणु है वड पुरखु वडाती ॥
You Yourself are All-knowing. O Lord, You are the Greatest of the Great!
ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਚਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੧॥
Jo Man Chith Thudhh Dhhiaaeidhae Maerae Sachiaa Bal Bal Ho Thin Jaathee ||1||
जो मनि चिति तुधु धिआइदे मेरे सचिआ बलि बलि हउ तिन जाती ॥१॥
O my True Lord, I am a sacrifice, a humble sacrifice, to those who meditate on You within their conscious mind. ||1||

ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਰਖਿਆ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥
Jeeo Paae Than Saajiaa Rakhiaa Banath Banaae ||
जीउ पाइ तनु साजिआ रखिआ बणत बणाइ ॥
He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created.
ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Akhee Dhaekhai Jihavaa Bolai Kannee Surath Samaae ||
अखी देखै जिहवा बोलै कंनी सुरति समाइ ॥
With their eyes, they see, and with their tongues, they speak; with their ears, they bring the mind to awareness.
ਪੈਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਹਥੀ ਕਰਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੈਨੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
Pairee Chalai Hathhee Karanaa Dhithaa Painai Khaae ||
पैरी चलै हथी करणा दिता पैनै खाइ ॥
With their feet, they walk, and with their hands, they work; they wear and eat whatever is given.
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
Jin Rach Rachiaa Thisehi N Jaanai Andhhaa Andhh Kamaae ||
जिनि रचि रचिआ तिसहि न जाणै अंधा अंधु कमाइ ॥
They do not know the One who created the Creation. The blind fools do their dark deeds.
ਜਾ ਭਜੈ ਤਾ ਠੀਕਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾੜਤ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jaa Bhajai Thaa Theekar Hovai Ghaarrath Gharree N Jaae ||
जा भजै ता ठीकरु होवै घाड़त घड़ी न जाइ ॥
When the pitcher of the body breaks and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
Naanak Gur Bin Naahi Path Path Vin Paar N Paae ||1||
नानक गुर बिनु नाहि पति पति विणु पारि न पाइ ॥१॥
O Nanak, without the Guru, there is no honor; without honor, no one is carried across. ||1||

ਦੇਂਦੇ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਐਸਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
Dhaenadhae Thhaavahu Dhithaa Changaa Manamukh Aisaa Jaaneeai ||
देंदे थावहु दिता चंगा मनमुखि ऐसा जाणीऐ ॥
They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the self-willed manmukhs.
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
Surath Math Chathuraaee Thaa Kee Kiaa Kar Aakh Vakhaaneeai ||
सुरति मति चतुराई ता की किआ करि आखि वखाणीऐ ॥
What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness?
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
Anthar Behi Kai Karam Kamaavai So Chahu Kunddee Jaaneeai ||
अंतरि बहि कै करम कमावै सो चहु कुंडी जाणीऐ ॥
The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one's own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions.
ਜੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਰਮ ਨਾਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਪਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
Jo Dhharam Kamaavai This Dhharam Naao Hovai Paap Kamaanai Paapee Jaaneeai ||
जो धरमु कमावै तिसु धरम नाउ होवै पापि कमाणै पापी जाणीऐ ॥
One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
Thoon Aapae Khael Karehi Sabh Karathae Kiaa Dhoojaa Aakh Vakhaaneeai ||
तूं आपे खेल करहि सभि करते किआ दूजा आखि वखाणीऐ ॥
You Yourself enact the entire play, O Creator. Why should we speak of any other?
ਜਿਚਰੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੋਤੀ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿਹੁ ਦਿਖਾ ਸਿਆਣੀਐ ॥
Jichar Thaeree Joth Thichar Jothee Vich Thoon Bolehi Vin Jothee Koee Kishh Karihu Dhikhaa Siaaneeai ||
जिचरु तेरी जोति तिचरु जोती विचि तूं बोलहि विणु जोती कोई किछु करिहु दिखा सिआणीऐ ॥
As long as Your Light is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? Show me any such cleverness!
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨॥
Naanak Guramukh Nadharee Aaeiaa Har Eiko Sugharr Sujaaneeai ||2||
नानक गुरमुखि नदरी आइआ हरि इको सुघड़ु सुजाणीऐ ॥२॥
O Nanak, the Lord alone is Perfect and All-knowing; He is revealed to the Gurmukh. ||2||

Thudhh Aapae Jagath Oupaae Kai Thudhh Aapae Dhhandhhai Laaeiaa ||
तुधु आपे जगतु उपाइ कै तुधु आपे धंधै लाइआ ॥
You Yourself created the world, and You Yourself put it to work.
ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥
Moh Thagoulee Paae Kai Thudhh Aapahu Jagath Khuaaeiaa ||
मोह ठगउली पाइ कै तुधु आपहु जगतु खुआइआ ॥
Administering the drug of emotional attachment, You Yourself have led the world astray.
ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਹੈ ਨਹ ਤਿਪਤੈ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਿਹਾਇਆ ॥
Thisanaa Andhar Agan Hai Neh Thipathai Bhukhaa Thihaaeiaa ||
तिसना अंदरि अगनि है नह तिपतै भुखा तिहाइआ ॥
The fire of desire is deep within; unsatisfied, people remain hungry and thirsty.
ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
Sehasaa Eihu Sansaar Hai Mar Janmai Aaeiaa Jaaeiaa ||
सहसा इहु संसारु है मरि जमै आइआ जाइआ ॥
This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਸਭਿ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
Bin Sathigur Mohu N Thuttee Sabh Thhakae Karam Kamaaeiaa ||
बिनु सतिगुर मोहु न तुटई सभि थके करम कमाइआ ॥
Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸੁਖਿ ਰਜਾ ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
Guramathee Naam Dhhiaaeeai Sukh Rajaa Jaa Thudhh Bhaaeiaa ||
गुरमती नामु धिआईऐ सुखि रजा जा तुधु भाइआ ॥
Those who follow the Guru's Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will.
ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Kul Oudhhaarae Aapanaa Dhhann Janaedhee Maaeiaa ||
कुलु उधारे आपणा धंनु जणेदी माइआ ॥
They save their families and ancestors; blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them.
