O my Lord, I am so foolish; save me, O my Lord God!

ਮੰਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
Mandhar Ghar Aanandh Har Har Jas Man Bhaavai ||
मंदरि घरि आनंदु हरि हरि जसु मनि भावै ॥
Those whose minds are pleased by the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, are joyful in the palaces of their own homes.
ਸਭ ਰਸ ਮੀਠੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
Sabh Ras Meethae Mukh Lagehi Jaa Har Gun Gaavai ||
सभ रस मीठे मुखि लगहि जा हरि गुण गावै ॥
Their mouths savor all the sweet delicacies when they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ਸਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਇਕੀਹ ਕੁਲੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
Har Jan Paravaar Sadhhaar Hai Eikeeh Kulee Sabh Jagath Shhaddaavai ||2||
हरि जनु परवारु सधारु है इकीह कुली सभु जगतु छडावै ॥२॥
The Lord's humble servants are the saviors of their families; they save their families for twenty-one generations - they save the entire world! ||2||
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
Jo Kishh Keeaa So Har Keeaa Har Kee Vaddiaaee ||
जो किछु कीआ सो हरि कीआ हरि की वडिआई ॥
Whatever has been done, has been done by the Lord; it is the Glorious Greatness of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
Har Jeea Thaerae Thoon Varathadhaa Har Pooj Karaaee ||
हरि जीअ तेरे तूं वरतदा हरि पूज कराई ॥
O Lord, in Your creatures, You are pervading; You inspire them to worship You.
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਲਹਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਾਈ ॥੩॥
Har Bhagath Bhanddaar Lehaaeidhaa Aapae Varathaaee ||3||
हरि भगति भंडार लहाइदा आपे वरताई ॥३॥
The Lord leads us to the treasure of devotional worship; He Himself bestows it. ||3||
ਲਾਲਾ ਹਾਟਿ ਵਿਹਾਝਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
Laalaa Haatt Vihaajhiaa Kiaa This Chathuraaee ||
लाला हाटि विहाझिआ किआ तिसु चतुराई ॥
I am a slave, purchased in Your market; what clever tricks do I have?
ਜੇ ਰਾਜਿ ਬਹਾਲੇ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਲਾਮੁ ਘਾਸੀ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਢਾਈ ॥
Jae Raaj Behaalae Thaa Har Gulaam Ghaasee Ko Har Naam Kadtaaee ||
जे राजि बहाले ता हरि गुलामु घासी कउ हरि नामु कढाई ॥
If the Lord were to set me upon a throne, I would still be His slave. If I were a grass-cutter, I would still chant the Lord's Name.
ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੮॥੪੬॥

ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ਕਰੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਜੀਉ ਲਾਇ ॥
Kirasaanee Kirasaan Karae Lochai Jeeo Laae ||
किरसाणी किरसाणु करे लोचै जीउ लाइ ॥
The farmers love to work their farms;
ਹਲੁ ਜੋਤੈ ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁਤੁ ਧੀ ਖਾਇ ॥
Hal Jothai Oudham Karae Maeraa Puth Dhhee Khaae ||
हलु जोतै उदमु करे मेरा पुतु धी खाइ ॥
They plow and work the fields, so that their sons and daughters may eat.
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੧॥
Thio Har Jan Har Har Jap Karae Har Anth Shhaddaae ||1||
तिउ हरि जनु हरि हरि जपु करे हरि अंति छडाइ ॥१॥
In just the same way, the Lord's humble servants chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and in the end, the Lord shall save them. ||1||
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
Mai Moorakh Kee Gath Keejai Maerae Raam ||
मै मूरख की गति कीजै मेरे राम ॥
I am foolish - save me, O my Lord!
ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇ ਹਮ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Gur Sathigur Saevaa Har Laae Ham Kaam ||1|| Rehaao ||
गुर सतिगुर सेवा हरि लाइ हम काम ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
O Lord, enjoin me to work and serve the Guru, the True Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਲੈ ਤੁਰੇ ਸਉਦਾਗਰੀ ਸਉਦਾਗਰੁ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
Lai Thurae Soudhaagaree Soudhaagar Dhhaavai ||
लै तुरे सउदागरी सउदागरु धावै ॥
The traders buy horses, planning to trade them.
ਧਨੁ ਖਟੈ ਆਸਾ ਕਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਵੈ ॥
Dhhan Khattai Aasaa Karai Maaeiaa Mohu Vadhhaavai ||
धनु खटै आसा करै माइआ मोहु वधावै ॥
They hope to earn wealth; their attachment to Maya increases.
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
Thio Har Jan Har Har Bolathaa Har Bol Sukh Paavai ||2||
तिउ हरि जनु हरि हरि बोलता हरि बोलि सुखु पावै ॥२॥
In just the same way, the Lord's humble servants chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; chanting the Lord's Name, they find peace. ||2||
ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਹਟਵਾਣੀਆ ਬਹਿ ਹਾਟਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
Bikh Sanchai Hattavaaneeaa Behi Haatt Kamaae ||
बिखु संचै हटवाणीआ बहि हाटि कमाइ ॥
The shop-keepers collect poison, sitting in their shops, carrying on their business.
ਮੋਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਝੂਠ ਕਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
Moh Jhooth Pasaaraa Jhooth Kaa Jhoothae Lapattaae ||
मोह झूठु पसारा झूठ का झूठे लपटाइ ॥
Their love is false, their displays are false, and they are engrossed in falsehood.
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
Thio Har Jan Har Dhhan Sanchiaa Har Kharach Lai Jaae ||3||
तिउ हरि जनि हरि धनु संचिआ हरि खरचु लै जाइ ॥३॥
In just the same way, the Lord's humble servants gather the wealth of the Lord's Name; they take the Lord's Name as their supplies. ||3||
ਇਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਫਾਸ ॥
Eihu Maaeiaa Moh Kuttanb Hai Bhaae Dhoojai Faas ||
इहु माइआ मोह कुट्मबु है भाइ दूजै फास ॥
This emotional attachment to Maya and family, and the love of duality, is a noose around the neck.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਤਰੈ ਜੋ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ॥
Guramathee So Jan Tharai Jo Dhaasan Dhaas ||
गुरमती सो जनु तरै जो दासनि दास ॥
Following the Guru's Teachings, the humble servants are carried across; they become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.
ਜਨਿ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਾਸ ॥੪॥੩॥੯॥੪੭॥

जनि नानकि नामु धिआइआ गुरमुखि परगास ॥४॥३॥९॥४७॥
Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam; the Gurmukh is enlightened. ||4||3||9||47||

ਨਿਤ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਰਮੈ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
Nith Dhinas Raath Laalach Karae Bharamai Bharamaaeiaa ||
नित दिनसु राति लालचु करे भरमै भरमाइआ ॥
Continuously, day and night, they are gripped by greed and deluded by doubt.
ਵੇਗਾਰਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਵੇਗਾਰੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਇਆ ॥
Vaegaar Firai Vaegaareeaa Sir Bhaar Outhaaeiaa ||
वेगारि फिरै वेगारीआ सिरि भारु उठाइआ ॥
The slaves labor in slavery, carrying the loads upon their heads.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਜਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
Jo Gur Kee Jan Saevaa Karae So Ghar Kai Kanm Har Laaeiaa ||1||
जो गुर की जनु सेवा करे सो घर कै कमि हरि लाइआ ॥१॥
That humble being who serves the Guru is put to work by the Lord in His Home. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਤੋੜਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
Maerae Raam Thorr Bandhhan Maaeiaa Ghar Kai Kanm Laae ||
मेरे राम तोड़ि बंधन माइआ घर कै कमि लाइ ॥
O my Lord, please break these bonds of Maya, and put me to work in Your Home.
ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Nith Har Gun Gaaveh Har Naam Samaae ||1|| Rehaao ||
नित हरि गुण गावह हरि नामि समाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
I continuously sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; I am absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||
ਨਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰੇ ਨਰਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਰਥਿ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Nar Praanee Chaakaree Karae Narapath Raajae Arathh Sabh Maaeiaa ||
नरु प्राणी चाकरी करे नरपति राजे अरथि सभ माइआ ॥
Mortal men work for kings, all for the sake of wealth and Maya.
ਕੈ ਬੰਧੈ ਕੈ ਡਾਨਿ ਲੇਇ ਕੈ ਨਰਪਤਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
Kai Bandhhai Kai Ddaan Laee Kai Narapath Mar Jaaeiaa ||
कै बंधै कै डानि लेइ कै नरपति मरि जाइआ ॥
But the king either imprisons them, or fines them, or else dies himself.
ਧੰਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Dhhann Dhhan Saevaa Safal Sathiguroo Kee Jith Har Har Naam Jap Har Sukh Paaeiaa ||2||
धंनु धनु सेवा सफल सतिगुरू की जितु हरि हरि नामु जपि हरि सुखु पाइआ ॥२॥
Blessed, rewarding and fruitful is the service of the True Guru; through it, I chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and I have found peace. ||2||
ਨਿਤ ਸਉਦਾ ਸੂਦੁ ਕੀਚੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥
Nith Soudhaa Soodh Keechai Bahu Bhaath Kar Maaeiaa Kai Thaaee ||
नित सउदा सूदु कीचै बहु भाति करि माइआ कै ताई ॥
Everyday, people carry on their business, with all sorts of devices to earn interest, for the sake of Maya.
ਜਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਦੇਇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨੇ ਤੋਟੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
Jaa Laahaa Dhaee Thaa Sukh Manae Thottai Mar Jaaee ||
जा लाहा देइ ता सुखु मने तोटै मरि जाई ॥
If they earn a profit, they are pleased, but their hearts are broken by losses.
ਜੋ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
Jo Gun Saajhee Gur Sio Karae Nith Nith Sukh Paaee ||3||
जो गुण साझी गुर सिउ करे नित नित सुखु पाई ॥३॥
One who is worthy, becomes a partner with the Guru, and finds a lasting peace forever. ||3||
