Sanniaasee Bibhooth Laae Dhaeh Savaaree ||
संनिआसी बिभूत लाइ देह सवारी ॥
The Sannyaasee smears his body with ashes;
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਤਿਆਗੁ ਕਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰੀ ॥
Par Thria Thiaag Karee Brehamachaaree ||
पर त्रिअ तिआगु करी ब्रहमचारी ॥
Renouncing other men's women, he practices celibacy.
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

मै मूरख हरि आस तुमारी ॥२॥
I am just a fool, Lord; I place my hopes in You! ||2||
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਤਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Khathree Karam Karae Soorathan Paavai ||
खत्री करम करे सूरतणु पावै ॥
The Kh'shaatriya acts bravely, and is recognized as a warrior.
ਸੂਦੁ ਵੈਸੁ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Soodh Vais Par Kirath Kamaavai ||
सूदु वैसु पर किरति कमावै ॥
The Shoodra and the Vaisha work and slave for others;
ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
Mai Moorakh Har Naam Shhaddaavai ||3||
मै मूरख हरि नामु छडावै ॥३॥
I am just a fool - I am saved by the Lord's Name. ||3||
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
Sabh Thaeree Srisatt Thoon Aap Rehiaa Samaaee ||
सभ तेरी स्रिसटि तूं आपि रहिआ समाई ॥
The entire Universe is Yours; You Yourself permeate and pervade it.

भजु मिलि साधू संगति जन की ॥
Vibrate on it, meditate on it, and join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

Cross over the terrifying world-ocean, listening to the Unspoken Speech of the Lord. ||1||

गोबिंद सतसंगति मेलाइ ॥
O Lord of the Universe, unite me with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

Thin Dhaasan Dhaas Karahu Ham Raamaa ||
तिन दासनि दास करहु हम रामा ॥
Please make me the slave of their slaves, Lord.
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਊਤਮ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੨॥
Jan Kee Saevaa Ootham Kaamaa ||2||
जन की सेवा ऊतम कामा ॥२॥
Serving Your slaves is the ultimate good deed. ||2||
ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
Jo Har Kee Har Kathhaa Sunaavai ||
जो हरि की हरि कथा सुणावै ॥
One who chants the Speech of the Lord
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
So Jan Hamarai Man Chith Bhaavai ||
सो जनु हमरै मनि चिति भावै ॥
That humble servant is pleasing to my conscious mind.
ਜਨ ਪਗ ਰੇਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
Jan Pag Raen Vaddabhaagee Paavai ||3||
जन पग रेणु वडभागी पावै ॥३॥
Those who are blessed with great good fortune obtain the dust of the feet of the humble. ||3||
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥

संत जना सिउ प्रीति बनि आई ॥
Those who are blessed with such pre-ordained destiny

जिन कउ लिखतु लिखिआ धुरि पाई ॥
Are in love with the humble Saints.

मीने प्रीति भई जलि नाइ ॥
The fish loves to bathe in the water.

As the cow shows her love to her strayed calf when she finds it,
ਕਾਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
Kaaman Preeth Jaa Pir Ghar Aavai ||
कामनि प्रीति जा पिरु घरि आवै ॥
And as the bride shows her love for her husband when he returns home,
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

हरि जन प्रीति जा हरि जसु गावै ॥२॥

The rainbird loves the rainwater, falling in torrents;

नरपति प्रीति माइआ देखि पसारा ॥
The king loves to see his wealth on display.

The hungry person loves to eat food.

Meeting her Beloved, all her pains are left behind.

Its heart blossoms forth upon seeing its mother.

होरु सभ प्रीति माइआ मोहु काचा ॥
All other loves and emotional attachment to Maya are false.
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੂਰਾ ਕਚੁ ਪਾਚਾ ॥
Binas Jaae Kooraa Kach Paachaa ||
बिनसि जाइ कूरा कचु पाचा ॥
They shall pass away, like false and transitory decorations.
