ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਵਹਿ ॥
Bhagath Karehi Moorakh Aap Janaavehi ||
भगति करहि मूरख आपु जणावहि ॥
The fools perform devotional worship by showing off;
ਨਚਿ ਨਚਿ ਟਪਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
Nach Nach Ttapehi Bahuth Dhukh Paavehi ||
नचि नचि टपहि बहुतु दुखु पावहि ॥
They dance and dance and jump all around, but they only suffer in terrible pain.
ਨਚਿਐ ਟਪਿਐ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Nachiai Ttapiai Bhagath N Hoe ||
नचिऐ टपिऐ भगति न होइ ॥
By dancing and jumping, devotional worship is not performed.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
Sabadh Marai Bhagath Paaeae Jan Soe ||3||
सबदि मरै भगति पाए जनु सोइ ॥३॥
But one who dies in the Word of the Shabad, obtains devotional worship. ||3||
ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥
Bhagath Vashhal Bhagath Karaaeae Soe ||
भगति वछलु भगति कराए सोइ ॥
The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He inspires them to perform devotional worship.
ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਖੋਇ ॥
Sachee Bhagath Vichahu Aap Khoe ||
सची भगति विचहु आपु खोइ ॥
True devotional worship consists of eliminating selfishness and conceit from within.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Maeraa Prabh Saachaa Sabh Bidhh Jaanai ||
मेरा प्रभु साचा सभ बिधि जाणै ॥
My True God knows all ways and means.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੨੪॥

नानक बखसे नामु पछाणै ॥४॥४॥२४॥
O Nanak, He forgives those who recognize the Naam. ||4||4||24||

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਧਾਤੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
Man Maarae Dhhaath Mar Jaae ||
मनु मारे धातु मरि जाइ ॥
When someone kills and subdues his own mind, his wandering nature is also subdued.
ਬਿਨੁ ਮੂਏ ਕੈਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
Bin Mooeae Kaisae Har Paae ||
बिनु मूए कैसे हरि पाइ ॥
Without such a death, how can one find the Lord?
ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Man Marai Dhaaroo Jaanai Koe ||
मनु मरै दारू जाणै कोइ ॥
Only a few know the medicine to kill the mind.
ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
Man Sabadh Marai Boojhai Jan Soe ||1||
मनु सबदि मरै बूझै जनु सोइ ॥१॥
One whose mind dies in the Word of the Shabad, understands Him. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
Jis No Bakhasae Dhae Vaddiaaee ||
जिस नो बखसे दे वडिआई ॥
He grants greatness to those whom He forgives.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादि हरि वसै मनि आई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
By Guru's Grace, the Lord comes to dwell within the mind. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Guramukh Karanee Kaar Kamaavai ||
गुरमुखि करणी कार कमावै ॥
The Gurmukh practices doing good deeds;
ਤਾ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Thaa Eis Man Kee Sojhee Paavai ||
ता इसु मन की सोझी पावै ॥
Thus he comes to understand this mind.
ਮਨੁ ਮੈ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਗਲ ਮਿਕਦਾਰਾ ॥
Man Mai Math Maigal Mikadhaaraa ||
मनु मै मतु मैगल मिकदारा ॥
The mind is like an elephant, drunk with wine.
ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Gur Ankas Maar Jeevaalanehaaraa ||2||
गुरु अंकसु मारि जीवालणहारा ॥२॥
The Guru is the rod which controls it, and shows it the way. ||2||
ਮਨੁ ਅਸਾਧੁ ਸਾਧੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
Man Asaadhh Saadhhai Jan Koe ||
मनु असाधु साधै जनु कोइ ॥
The mind is uncontrollable; how rare are those who subdue it.
ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Achar Charai Thaa Niramal Hoe ||
अचरु चरै ता निरमलु होइ ॥
Those who move the immovable become pure.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਇਆ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
Guramukh Eihu Man Laeiaa Savaar ||
गुरमुखि इहु मनु लइआ सवारि ॥
The Gurmukhs embellish and beautify this mind.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਤਜੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੩॥
Houmai Vichahu Thajae Vikaar ||3||
हउमै विचहु तजे विकार ॥३॥
They eradicate egotism and corruption from within. ||3||
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਅਨੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
Jo Dhhur Raakhian Mael Milaae ||
जो धुरि राखिअनु मेलि मिलाइ ॥
Those who, by pre-ordained destiny, are united in the Lord's Union,
ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Kadhae N Vishhurrehi Sabadh Samaae ||
कदे न विछुड़हि सबदि समाइ ॥
Are never separated from Him again; they are absorbed in the Shabad.
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
Aapanee Kalaa Aapae Hee Jaanai ||
आपणी कला आपे ही जाणै ॥
He Himself knows His Own Almighty Power.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੫॥੨੫॥

नानक गुरमुखि नामु पछाणै ॥४॥५॥२५॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||5||25||

हउमै विचि सभु जगु बउराना ॥
The entire world has gone insane in egotism.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥
Dhoojai Bhaae Bharam Bhulaanaa ||
दूजै भाइ भरमि भुलाना ॥
In the love of duality, it wanders deluded by doubt.
ਬਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
Bahu Chinthaa Chithavai Aap N Pashhaanaa ||
बहु चिंता चितवै आपु न पछाना ॥
The mind is distracted by great anxiety; no one recognizes one's own self.
ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਵਿਹਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
Dhhandhhaa Karathiaa Anadhin Vihaanaa ||1||
धंधा करतिआ अनदिनु विहाना ॥१॥
Occupied with their own affairs, their nights and days are passing away. ||1||
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਮਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
Hiradhai Raam Ramahu Maerae Bhaaee ||
हिरदै रामु रमहु मेरे भाई ॥
Meditate on the Lord in your hearts, O my Siblings of Destiny.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि रसना हरि रसन रसाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The Gurmukh's tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
Guramukh Hiradhai Jin Raam Pashhaathaa ||
गुरमुखि हिरदै जिनि रामु पछाता ॥
The Gurmukhs recognize the Lord in their own hearts;
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
Jagajeevan Saev Jug Chaarae Jaathaa ||
जगजीवनु सेवि जुग चारे जाता ॥
They serve the Lord, the Life of the World. They are famous throughout the four ages.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
Houmai Maar Gur Sabadh Pashhaathaa ||
हउमै मारि गुर सबदि पछाता ॥
They subdue egotism, and realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
Kirapaa Karae Prabh Karam Bidhhaathaa ||2||
क्रिपा करे प्रभ करम बिधाता ॥२॥
God, the Architect of Destiny, showers His Mercy upon them. ||2||
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Sae Jan Sachae Jo Gur Sabadh Milaaeae ||
से जन सचे जो गुर सबदि मिलाए ॥
True are those who merge into the Word of the Guru's Shabad;
ਧਾਵਤ ਵਰਜੇ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhhaavath Varajae Thaak Rehaaeae ||
धावत वरजे ठाकि रहाए ॥
They restrain their wandering mind and keep it steady.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥
Naam Nav Nidhh Gur Thae Paaeae ||
नामु नव निधि गुर ते पाए ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the nine treasures. It is obtained from the Guru.
ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥੩॥
Har Kirapaa Thae Har Vasai Man Aaeae ||3||
हरि किरपा ते हरि वसै मनि आए ॥३॥
By the Lord's Grace, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind. ||3||
ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
Raam Raam Karathiaa Sukh Saanth Sareer ||
राम राम करतिआ सुखु सांति सरीर ॥
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, the body becomes peaceful and tranquil.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਮ ਪੀਰ ॥
Anthar Vasai N Laagai Jam Peer ||
अंतरि वसै न लागै जम पीर ॥
He dwells deep within - the pain of death does not touch Him.
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਜੀਰ ॥
Aapae Saahib Aap Vajeer ||
आपे साहिबु आपि वजीर ॥
He Himself is our Lord and Master; He is His Own Advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੪॥੬॥੨੬॥
Naanak Saev Sadhaa Har Gunee Geheer ||4||6||26||
नानक सेवि सदा हरि गुणी गहीर ॥४॥६॥२६॥
O Nanak, serve the Lord forever; He is the treasure of glorious virtue. ||4||6||26||

सो किउ विसरै सभ माहि समाना ॥
Why forget Him, who is all-pervading?
ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
Jith Saeviai Dharageh Path Paravaanaa ||1||
जितु सेविऐ दरगह पति परवाना ॥१॥
Serving Him, one is honored and accepted in the Court of the Lord. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
Har Kae Naam Vittahu Bal Jaao ||
हरि के नाम विटहु बलि जाउ ॥
I am a sacrifice to the Name of the Lord.
ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਤਦਿ ਹੀ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thoon Visarehi Thadh Hee Mar Jaao ||1|| Rehaao ||
तूं विसरहि तदि ही मरि जाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
If I were to forget You, at that very instant, I would die. ||1||Pause||
ਤਿਨ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਜਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
Thin Thoon Visarehi J Thudhh Aap Bhulaaeae ||
तिन तूं विसरहि जि तुधु आपि भुलाए ॥
Those whom You Yourself have led astray, forget You.
