The mind becomes pure, when the True Lord dwells within.
ਸਾਚਿ ਵਸਿਐ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ॥

साचि वसिऐ साची सभ कार ॥
When one dwells in Truth, all actions become true.
ਊਤਮ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥
Ootham Karanee Sabadh Beechaar ||3||
ऊतम करणी सबद बीचार ॥३॥
The ultimate action is to contemplate the Word of the Shabad. ||3||

गुर ते साची सेवा होइ ॥
Through the Guru, true service is performed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Guramukh Naam Pashhaanai Koe ||
गुरमुखि नामु पछाणै कोइ ॥
How rare is that Gurmukh who recognizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਜੀਵੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
Jeevai Dhaathaa Dhaevanehaar ||
जीवै दाता देवणहारु ॥
The Giver, the Great Giver, lives forever.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੨੧॥

गुर ते गिआनु पाए जनु कोइ ॥
Those who obtain spiritual wisdom from the Guru are very rare.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੀਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Gur Thae Boojhai Seejhai Soe ||
गुर ते बूझै सीझै सोइ ॥
Those who obtain this understanding from the Guru become acceptable.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Gur Thae Sehaj Saach Beechaar ||
गुर ते सहजु साचु बीचारु ॥
Through the Guru, we intuitively contemplate the True One.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥

गुर ते पाए मुकति दुआरु ॥१॥
Through the Guru, the Gate of Liberation is found. ||1||
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ॥
Poorai Bhaag Milai Gur Aae ||
पूरै भागि मिलै गुरु आइ ॥
Through perfect good destiny, we come to meet the Guru.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साचै सहजि साचि समाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The true ones are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
Gur Miliai Thrisanaa Agan Bujhaaeae ||
गुरि मिलिऐ त्रिसना अगनि बुझाए ॥
Meeting the Guru, the fire of desire is quenched.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥

गुर ते सांति वसै मनि आए ॥
Through the Guru, peace and tranquility come to dwell within the mind.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुर ते पवित पावन सुचि होइ ॥
Through the Guru, we become pure, holy and true.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
Gur Thae Sabadh Milaavaa Hoe ||2||
गुर ते सबदि मिलावा होइ ॥२॥
Through the Guru, we are absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||2||
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
Baajh Guroo Sabh Bharam Bhulaaee ||
बाझु गुरू सभ भरमि भुलाई ॥
Without the Guru, everyone wanders in doubt.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
Bin Naavai Bahuthaa Dhukh Paaee ||
बिनु नावै बहुता दुखु पाई ॥
Without the Name, they suffer in terrible pain.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
Guramukh Hovai S Naam Dhhiaaee ||
गुरमुखि होवै सु नामु धिआई ॥
Those who meditate on the Naam become Gurmukh.
ਦਰਸਨਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
Dharasan Sachai Sachee Path Hoee ||3||
दरसनि सचै सची पति होई ॥३॥
True honor is obtained through the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of the True Lord. ||3||
ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦਾਤਾ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Kis No Keheeai Dhaathaa Eik Soee ||
किस नो कहीऐ दाता इकु सोई ॥
Why speak of any other? He alone is the Giver.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
Kirapaa Karae Sabadh Milaavaa Hoee ||
किरपा करे सबदि मिलावा होई ॥
When He grants His Grace, union with the Shabad is obtained.
ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥

मिलि प्रीतम साचे गुण गावा ॥
Meeting with my Beloved, I sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.

True is that place, where the mind becomes pure.

सचि निवासु करे सचु सोइ ॥
True is the one who abides in Truth.
ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
Sachee Baanee Jug Chaarae Jaapai ||
सची बाणी जुग चारे जापै ॥
The True Bani of the Word is known throughout the four ages.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੈ ॥੧॥
Sabh Kishh Saachaa Aapae Aapai ||1||
सभु किछु साचा आपे आपै ॥१॥
The True One Himself is everything. ||1||
ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
Karam Hovai Sathasang Milaaeae ||
करमु होवै सतसंगि मिलाए ॥
Through the karma of good actions, one joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁ ਥਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Har Gun Gaavai Bais S Thhaaeae ||1|| Rehaao ||
हरि गुण गावै बैसि सु थाए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Sing the Glories of the Lord, sitting in that place. ||1||Pause||
ਜਲਉ ਇਹ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
Jalo Eih Jihavaa Dhoojai Bhaae ||
जलउ इह जिहवा दूजै भाइ ॥
Burn this tongue, which loves duality,
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਚਾਖੈ ਫੀਕਾ ਆਲਾਇ ॥
Har Ras N Chaakhai Feekaa Aalaae ||
हरि रसु न चाखै फीका आलाइ ॥
Which does not taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and which utters insipid words.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Bin Boojhae Than Man Feekaa Hoe ||
बिनु बूझे तनु मनु फीका होइ ॥
Without understanding, the body and mind become tasteless and insipid.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥
Bin Naavai Dhukheeaa Chaliaa Roe ||2||
बिनु नावै दुखीआ चलिआ रोइ ॥२॥
Without the Name, the miserable ones depart crying out in pain. ||2||
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
Rasanaa Har Ras Chaakhiaa Sehaj Subhaae ||
रसना हरि रसु चाखिआ सहजि सुभाइ ॥
One whose tongue naturally and intuitively tastes the Lord's sublime essence,
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Gur Kirapaa Thae Sach Samaae ||
गुर किरपा ते सचि समाइ ॥
By Guru's Grace, is absorbed in the True Lord.
ਸਾਚੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
Saachae Raathee Gur Sabadh Veechaar ||
साचे राती गुर सबदु वीचार ॥
Imbued with Truth, one contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਧਾਰ ॥੩॥
Anmrith Peevai Niramal Dhhaar ||3||
अम्रितु पीवै निरमल धार ॥३॥
And drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar, from the immaculate stream within. ||3||
ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਭਾਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Naam Samaavai Jo Bhaaddaa Hoe ||
नामि समावै जो भाडा होइ ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is collected in the vessel of the mind.
ਊਂਧੈ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Oonadhhai Bhaanddai Ttikai N Koe ||
ऊंधै भांडै टिकै न कोइ ॥
Nothing is collected if the vessel is upside-down.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥
Gur Sabadhee Man Naam Nivaas ||
गुर सबदी मनि नामि निवासु ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Naam abides within the mind.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੪॥੩॥੨੩॥
Naanak Sach Bhaanddaa Jis Sabadh Piaas ||4||3||23||
नानक सचु भांडा जिसु सबद पिआस ॥४॥३॥२३॥
O Nanak, True is that vessel of the mind, which thirsts for the Shabad. ||4||3||23||

Some sing on and on, but their minds do not find happiness.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
Houmai Vich Gaavehi Birathhaa Jaae ||
हउमै विचि गावहि बिरथा जाइ ॥
In egotism, they sing, but it is wasted uselessly.
ਗਾਵਣਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Gaavan Gaavehi Jin Naam Piaar ||
गावणि गावहि जिन नाम पिआरु ॥
Those who love the Naam, sing the song.
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

साची बाणी सबद बीचारु ॥१॥
They contemplate the True Bani of the Word, and the Shabad. ||1||
ਗਾਵਤ ਰਹੈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
Gaavath Rehai Jae Sathigur Bhaavai ||
गावत रहै जे सतिगुर भावै ॥
They sing on and on, if it pleases the True Guru.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Man Than Raathaa Naam Suhaavai ||1|| Rehaao ||
मनु तनु राता नामि सुहावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Their minds and bodies are embellished and adorned, attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਇਕਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇਹਿ ॥

इकि गावहि इकि भगति करेहि ॥
Some sing, and some perform devotional worship.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਸਨੇਹ ॥
Naam N Paavehi Bin Asanaeh ||
नामु न पावहि बिनु असनेह ॥
Without heart-felt love, the Naam is not obtained.
ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

सची भगति गुर सबद पिआरि ॥
True devotional worship consists of love for the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

अपना पिरु राखिआ सदा उरि धारि ॥२॥
