ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Ik Oankaar Sath Naam Karathaa Purakh Nirabho Niravair Akaal Moorath Ajoonee Saibhan Gur Prasaadh ||
ੴ सति नामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुर प्रसादि ॥

ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
Bho Much Bhaaraa Vaddaa Thol ||
भउ मुचु भारा वडा तोलु ॥
The Fear of God is overpowering, and so very heavy,
ਮਨ ਮਤਿ ਹਉਲੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
Man Math Houlee Bolae Bol ||
मन मति हउली बोले बोलु ॥
While the intellect is lightweight, as is the speech one speaks.
ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ ਸਹੀਐ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
Sir Dhhar Chaleeai Seheeai Bhaar ||
सिरि धरि चलीऐ सहीऐ भारु ॥
So place the Fear of God upon your head, and bear that weight;
ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
Nadharee Karamee Gur Beechaar ||1||
नदरी करमी गुर बीचारु ॥१॥
By the Grace of the Merciful Lord, contemplate the Guru. ||1||
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
Bhai Bin Koe N Langhas Paar ||
भै बिनु कोइ न लंघसि पारि ॥
Without the Fear of God, no one crosses over the world-ocean.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

भै भउ राखिआ भाइ सवारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
This Fear of God adorns the Love of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
Bhai Than Agan Bhakhai Bhai Naal ||
भै तनि अगनि भखै भै नालि ॥
The fire of fear within the body is burnt away by the Fear of God.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
Bhai Bho Gharreeai Sabadh Savaar ||
भै भउ घड़ीऐ सबदि सवारि ॥
Through this Fear of God, we are adorned with the Word of the Shabad.
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥
Bhai Bin Ghaarrath Kach Nikach ||
भै बिनु घाड़त कचु निकच ॥
Without the Fear of God, all that is fashioned is false.
ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥
Andhhaa Sachaa Andhhee Satt ||2||
अंधा सचा अंधी सट ॥२॥
Useless is the mold, and useless are the hammer-strokes on the mold. ||2||
ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
Budhhee Baajee Oupajai Chaao ||
बुधी बाजी उपजै चाउ ॥
The desire for the worldly drama arises in the intellect,
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥
Sehas Siaanap Pavai N Thaao ||
सहस सिआणप पवै न ताउ ॥
But even with thousands of clever mental tricks, the heat of the Fear of God does not come into play.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਵਾਉ ॥
Naanak Manamukh Bolan Vaao ||
नानक मनमुखि बोलणु वाउ ॥
O Nanak, the speech of the self-willed manmukh is just wind.
ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥
Andhhaa Akhar Vaao Dhuaao ||3||1||
अंधा अखरु वाउ दुआउ ॥३॥१॥
His words are worthless and empty, like the wind. ||3||1||

ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Ddar Ghar Ghar Ddar Ddar Ddar Jaae ||
डरि घरु घरि डरु डरि डरु जाइ ॥
Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away.
ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
So Ddar Kaehaa Jith Ddar Ddar Paae ||
सो डरु केहा जितु डरि डरु पाइ ॥
What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears?
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
Thudhh Bin Dhoojee Naahee Jaae ||
तुधु बिनु दूजी नाही जाइ ॥
Without You, I have other place of rest at all.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
Jo Kishh Varathai Sabh Thaeree Rajaae ||1||
जो किछु वरतै सभ तेरी रजाइ ॥१॥
Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1||
ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
Ddareeai Jae Ddar Hovai Hor ||
डरीऐ जे डरु होवै होरु ॥
Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God.
ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

डरि डरि डरणा मन का सोरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
Naa Jeeo Marai N Ddoobai Tharai ||
ना जीउ मरै न डूबै तरै ॥
The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
Jin Kishh Keeaa So Kishh Karai ||
जिनि किछु कीआ सो किछु करै ॥
The One who created everything does everything.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
Hukamae Aavai Hukamae Jaae ||
हुकमे आवै हुकमे जाइ ॥
By the Hukam of His Command we come, and by the Hukam of His Command we go.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
Aagai Paashhai Hukam Samaae ||2||
आगै पाछै हुकमि समाइ ॥२॥
Before and after, His Command is pervading. ||2||
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
Hans Haeth Aasaa Asamaan ||
हंसु हेतु आसा असमानु ॥
Cruelty, attachment, desire and egotism
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
This Vich Bhookh Bahuth Nai Saan ||
तिसु विचि भूख बहुतु नै सानु ॥
There is great hunger in these, like the raging torrent of a wild stream.
ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
Bho Khaanaa Peenaa Aadhhaar ||
भउ खाणा पीणा आधारु ॥
Let the Fear of God be your food, drink and support.
ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
Vin Khaadhhae Mar Hohi Gavaar ||3||
विणु खाधे मरि होहि गवार ॥३॥
Without doing this, the fools simply die. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
Jis Kaa Koe Koee Koe Koe ||
जिस का कोइ कोई कोइ कोइ ॥
If anyone really has anyone else - how rare is that person!
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
Sabh Ko Thaeraa Thoon Sabhanaa Kaa Soe ||
सभु को तेरा तूं सभना का सोइ ॥
All are Yours - You are the Lord of all.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
Jaa Kae Jeea Janth Dhhan Maal ||
जा के जीअ जंत धनु मालु ॥
All beings and creatures, wealth and property belong to Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
Naanak Aakhan Bikham Beechaar ||4||2||
नानक आखणु बिखमु बीचारु ॥४॥२॥
O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him. ||4||2||

ਮਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥

माता मति पिता संतोखु ॥
Let wisdom be your mother, and contentment your father.
ਸਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
Sath Bhaaee Kar Eaehu Visaekh ||1||
सतु भाई करि एहु विसेखु ॥१॥
Let Truth be your brother - these are your best relatives. ||1||
ਕਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Kehanaa Hai Kishh Kehan N Jaae ||
कहणा है किछु कहणु न जाइ ॥
He has been described, but He cannot be described at all.
ਤਉ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
