मन मेरे गहु हरि नाम का ओला ॥
What is the human? What power does he have?
ਤੁਝੈ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾਤਾ ਝੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The hot winds shall never even touch you. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਉ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
Jio Bohithh Bhai Saagar Maahi ||
जिउ बोहिथु भै सागर माहि ॥
Like a boat in the ocean of fear;
ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਦੀਪਕ ਦੀਪਾਹਿ ॥
Andhhakaar Dheepak Dheepaahi ||
अंधकार दीपक दीपाहि ॥
Like a lamp which illumines the darkness;
ਅਗਨਿ ਸੀਤ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਸਿ ਦੂਖ ॥
Agan Seeth Kaa Laahas Dhookh ||
अगनि सीत का लाहसि दूख ॥
Like fire which takes away the pain of cold
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੂਖ ॥੨॥
Naam Japath Man Hovath Sookh ||2||
नामु जपत मनि होवत सूख ॥२॥
- just so, chanting the Name, the mind becomes peaceful. ||2||
ਉਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
Outhar Jaae Thaerae Man Kee Piaas ||
उतरि जाइ तेरे मन की पिआस ॥
The thirst of your mind shall be quenched,
ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਗਲੀ ਆਸ ॥
Pooran Hovai Sagalee Aas ||
पूरन होवै सगली आस ॥
And all hopes shall be fulfilled.
ਡੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
Ddolai Naahee Thumaraa Cheeth ||
डोलै नाही तुमरा चीतु ॥
Your consciousness shall not waver.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੀਤ ॥੩॥
Anmrith Naam Jap Guramukh Meeth ||3||
अम्रित नामु जपि गुरमुखि मीत ॥३॥
Meditate on the Ambrosial Naam as Gurmukh, O my friend. ||3||
ਨਾਮੁ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Naam Aoukhadhh Soee Jan Paavai ||
नामु अउखधु सोई जनु पावै ॥
He alone receives the panacea, the medicine of the Naam,
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਵੈ ॥
Kar Kirapaa Jis Aap Dhivaavai ||
करि किरपा जिसु आपि दिवावै ॥
Unto whom the Lord, in His Grace, bestows it.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸੈ ॥
Har Har Naam Jaa Kai Hiradhai Vasai ||
हरि हरि नामु जा कै हिरदै वसै ॥
One whose heart is filled with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har
ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਸੈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੭੯॥
Dhookh Dharadh Thih Naanak Nasai ||4||10||79||
दूखु दरदु तिह नानक नसै ॥४॥१०॥७९॥
- O Nanak, his pains and sorrows are eliminated. ||4||10||79||

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਰਬੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਅਘਾਨਾ ॥
Bahuth Dharab Kar Man N Aghaanaa ||
बहुतु दरबु करि मनु न अघाना ॥
Even with vast sums of wealth, the mind is not satisfied.
ਅਨਿਕ ਰੂਪ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਹ ਪਤੀਆਨਾ ॥
Anik Roop Dhaekh Neh Patheeaanaa ||
अनिक रूप देखि नह पतीआना ॥
Gazing upon countless beauties, the man is not satisfied.
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਉਰਝਿਓ ਜਾਨਿ ਮੇਰੀ ॥
Puthr Kalathr Ourajhiou Jaan Maeree ||
पुत्र कलत्र उरझिओ जानि मेरी ॥
He is so involved with his wife and sons - he believes that they belong to him.
ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਓਇ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
Ouh Binasai Oue Bhasamai Dtaeree ||1||
ओह बिनसै ओइ भसमै ढेरी ॥१॥
That wealth shall pass away, and those relatives shall be reduced to ashes. ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਨ ਦੇਖਉ ਬਿਲਲਾਤੇ ॥
Bin Har Bhajan Dhaekho Bilalaathae ||
बिनु हरि भजन देखउ बिललाते ॥
Without meditating and vibrating on the Lord, they are crying out in pain.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਨੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Dhhrig Than Dhhrig Dhhan Maaeiaa Sang Raathae ||1|| Rehaao ||
ध्रिगु तनु ध्रिगु धनु माइआ संगि राते ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Their bodies are cursed, and their wealth is cursed - they are imbued with Maya. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਉ ਬਿਗਾਰੀ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੀਜਹਿ ਦਾਮ ॥
Jio Bigaaree Kai Sir Dheejehi Dhaam ||
जिउ बिगारी कै सिरि दीजहि दाम ॥
The servant carries the bags of money on his head,
ਓਇ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਉਨ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਮ ॥
Oue Khasamai Kai Grihi Oun Dhookh Sehaam ||
ओइ खसमै कै ग्रिहि उन दूख सहाम ॥
Remember, remember, remember Him in meditation; He is the treasure of excellence. ||3||
ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਸਤ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
Jio Supanai Hoe Baisath Raajaa ||
जिउ सुपनै होइ बैसत राजा ॥
The man sits as a king in his dreams,
ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਪਸਾਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਾਰਥ ਕਾਜਾ ॥੨॥
Naethr Pasaarai Thaa Niraarathh Kaajaa ||2||
नेत्र पसारै ता निरारथ काजा ॥२॥
But when he opens his eyes, he sees that it was all in vain. ||2||
ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਾ ਖੇਤ ਊਪਰਿ ਪਰਾਏ ॥
Jio Raakhaa Khaeth Oopar Paraaeae ||
जिउ राखा खेत ऊपरि पराए ॥
The watchman oversees the field of another,
ਖੇਤੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
Khaeth Khasam Kaa Raakhaa Outh Jaaeae ||
खेतु खसम का राखा उठि जाए ॥
But the field belongs to his master, while he must get up and depart.
ਉਸੁ ਖੇਤ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਰਾਖਾ ਕੜੈ ॥
Ous Khaeth Kaaran Raakhaa Karrai ||
उसु खेत कारणि राखा कड़ै ॥
He works so hard, and suffers for that field,
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਪਾਲੈ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਪੜੈ ॥੩॥
This Kai Paalai Kashhoo N Parrai ||3||
तिस कै पालै कछू न पड़ै ॥३॥
But still, nothing comes into his hands. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਰਾਜੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥
Jis Kaa Raaj Thisai Kaa Supanaa ||
जिस का राजु तिसै का सुपना ॥
The dream is His, and the kingdom is His;
ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਨੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਲਾਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ॥
Jin Maaeiaa Dheenee Thin Laaee Thrisanaa ||
जिनि माइआ दीनी तिनि लाई त्रिसना ॥
He who has given the wealth of Maya, has infused the desire for it.
ਆਪਿ ਬਿਨਾਹੇ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
Aap Binaahae Aap Karae Raas ||
आपि बिनाहे आपि करे रासि ॥
He Himself annihilates, and He Himself restores.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਗੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੮੦॥
Naanak Prabh Aagai Aradhaas ||4||11||80||
नानक प्रभ आगै अरदासि ॥४॥११॥८०॥

ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੇਖੀ ॥
Bahu Rang Maaeiaa Bahu Bidhh Paekhee ||
बहु रंग माइआ बहु बिधि पेखी ॥
I have gazed upon the many forms of Maya, in so many ways.
ਕਲਮ ਕਾਗਦ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਲੇਖੀ ॥
Kalam Kaagadh Siaanap Laekhee ||
कलम कागद सिआनप लेखी ॥
With pen and paper, I have written clever things.
ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਹੋਇ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਖਾਨ ॥
Mehar Malook Hoe Dhaekhiaa Khaan ||
महर मलूक होइ देखिआ खान ॥
I have seen what it is to be a chief, a king, and an emperor,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨ ॥੧॥
Thaa Thae Naahee Man Thripathaan ||1||
ता ते नाही मनु त्रिपतान ॥१॥
But they do not satisfy the mind. ||1||
ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਸੰਤ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ॥
So Sukh Mo Ko Santh Bathaavahu ||
सो सुखु मो कउ संत बतावहु ॥
Show me that peace, O Saints,
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Thrisanaa Boojhai Man Thripathaavahu ||1|| Rehaao ||
त्रिसना बूझै मनु त्रिपतावहु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Which will quench my thirst and satisfy my mind. ||1||Pause||
ਅਸੁ ਪਵਨ ਹਸਤਿ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ॥
As Pavan Hasath Asavaaree ||
असु पवन हसति असवारी ॥
You may have horses as fast as the wind, elephants to ride on,
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
Choaa Chandhan Saej Sundhar Naaree ||
चोआ चंदनु सेज सुंदरि नारी ॥
Sandalwood oil, and beautiful women in bed,
ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਆਖਾਰੇ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
Natt Naattik Aakhaarae Gaaeiaa ||
नट नाटिक आखारे गाइआ ॥
Actors in dramas, singing in theaters
ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Thaa Mehi Man Santhokh N Paaeiaa ||2||
ता महि मनि संतोखु न पाइआ ॥२॥
- but even with them, the mind does not find contentment. ||2||
ਤਖਤੁ ਸਭਾ ਮੰਡਨ ਦੋਲੀਚੇ ॥
Thakhath Sabhaa Manddan Dholeechae ||
तखतु सभा मंडन दोलीचे ॥
You may have a throne at the royal court, with beautiful decorations and soft carpets,
ਸਗਲ ਮੇਵੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਾਗੀਚੇ ॥
Sagal Maevae Sundhar Baageechae ||
सगल मेवे सुंदर बागीचे ॥
All sorts of luscious fruits and beautiful gardens,
ਆਖੇੜ ਬਿਰਤਿ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥
Aakhaerr Birath Raajan Kee Leelaa ||
आखेड़ बिरति राजन की लीला ॥
The excitement of the chase and princely pleasures
ਮਨੁ ਨ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਹੀਲਾ ॥੩॥
Man N Suhaelaa Parapanch Heelaa ||3||
मनु न सुहेला परपंचु हीला ॥३॥
- but still, the mind is not made happy by such illusory diversions. ||3||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਚੁ ਕਹਿਆ ॥
Kar Kirapaa Santhan Sach Kehiaa ||
करि किरपा संतन सचु कहिआ ॥
In their kindness, the Saints have told me of the True One,
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਇਹੁ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਲਹਿਆ ॥
Sarab Sookh Eihu Aanandh Lehiaa ||
सरब सूख इहु आनंदु लहिआ ॥
And so I have obtained all comforts and joy.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
Saadhhasang Har Keerathan Gaaeeai ||
साधसंगि हरि कीरतनु गाईऐ ॥
By all sorts of efforts, people do not find salvation.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥
Kahu Naanak Vaddabhaagee Paaeeai ||4||
कहु नानक वडभागी पाईऐ ॥४॥
Says Nanak, through great good fortune, I have found this. ||4||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
Jaa Kai Har Dhhan Soee Suhaelaa ||
जा कै हरि धनु सोई सुहेला ॥
One who obtains the wealth of the Lord becomes happy.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੨॥੮੧॥
