Parabath Sueinaa Rupaa Hovai Heerae Laal Jarraao ||
परबतु सुइना रुपा होवै हीरे लाल जड़ाउ ॥
If the mountains became gold and silver, studded with gems and jewels
ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੧॥
Bhee Thoonhai Saalaahanaa Aakhan Lehai N Chaao ||1||
भी तूंहै सालाहणा आखण लहै न चाउ ॥१॥

Bhaar Athaareh Maevaa Hovai Garurraa Hoe Suaao ||
भार अठारह मेवा होवै गरुड़ा होइ सुआउ ॥
If all the eighteen loads of vegetation became fruits,
ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥
Chandh Sooraj Dhue Firadhae Rakheeahi Nihachal Hovai Thhaao ||
चंदु सूरजु दुइ फिरदे रखीअहि निहचलु होवै थाउ ॥
And the growing grass became sweet rice; if I were able to stop the sun and the moon in their orbits and hold them perfectly steady

Jae Dhaehai Dhukh Laaeeai Paap Gareh Dhue Raahu ||
जे देहै दुखु लाईऐ पाप गरह दुइ राहु ॥
If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars;
ਰਤੁ ਪੀਣੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਿਰੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਭਾਉ ॥
Rath Peenae Raajae Sirai Oupar Rakheeahi Eaevai Jaapai Bhaao ||
रतु पीणे राजे सिरै उपरि रखीअहि एवै जापै भाउ ॥
And if the blood-sucking kings were to hold power over me
ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੩॥

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਾਉ ॥
Agee Paalaa Kaparr Hovai Khaanaa Hovai Vaao ||
अगी पाला कपड़ु होवै खाणा होवै वाउ ॥
If fire and ice were my clothes, and the wind was my food;
ਸੁਰਗੈ ਦੀਆ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਇਸਤਰੀਆ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੋ ਜਾਉ ॥
Suragai Dheeaa Mohaneeaa Eisathareeaa Hovan Naanak Sabho Jaao ||
सुरगै दीआ मोहणीआ इसतरीआ होवनि नानक सभो जाउ ॥
And even if the enticing heavenly beauties were my wives, O Nanak-all this shall pass away!

ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਗੈਬਾਨਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ॥
Badhafailee Gaibaanaa Khasam N Jaanee ||
बदफैली गैबाना खसमु न जाणई ॥
The foolish demon, who does evil deeds, does not know his Lord and Master.
ਸੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ॥
So Keheeai Dhaevaanaa Aap N Pashhaanee ||
सो कहीऐ देवाना आपु न पछाणई ॥
Call him a mad-man, if he does not understand himself.
ਕਲਹਿ ਬੁਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਵਾਦੇ ਖਪੀਐ ॥
Kalehi Buree Sansaar Vaadhae Khapeeai ||
कलहि बुरी संसारि वादे खपीऐ ॥
The strife of this world is evil; these struggles are consuming it.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਪਚੀਐ ॥
Vin Naavai Vaekaar Bharamae Pacheeai ||
विणु नावै वेकारि भरमे पचीऐ ॥
Without the Lord's Name, life is worthless. Through doubt, the people are being destroyed.
ਰਾਹ ਦੋਵੈ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਝਸੀ ॥
Raah Dhovai Eik Jaanai Soee Sijhasee ||
राह दोवै इकु जाणै सोई सिझसी ॥
One who recognizes that all spiritual paths lead to the One shall be emancipated.
ਕੁਫਰ ਗੋਅ ਕੁਫਰਾਣੈ ਪਇਆ ਦਝਸੀ ॥
Kufar Goa Kufaraanai Paeiaa Dhajhasee ||
कुफर गोअ कुफराणै पइआ दझसी ॥
One who speaks lies shall fall into hell and burn.
ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
Sabh Dhuneeaa Subehaan Sach Samaaeeai ||
सभ दुनीआ सुबहानु सचि समाईऐ ॥
In all the world, the most blessed and sanctified are those who remain absorbed in Truth.
ਸਿਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਵਾਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੯॥
Sijhai Dhar Dheevaan Aap Gavaaeeai ||9||
सिझै दरि दीवानि आपु गवाईऐ ॥९॥
One who eliminates selfishness and conceit is redeemed in the Court of the Lord. ||9||

ਸੋ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
So Jeeviaa Jis Man Vasiaa Soe ||
सो जीविआ जिसु मनि वसिआ सोइ ॥
They alone are truly alive, whose minds are filled with the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Naanak Avar N Jeevai Koe ||
नानक अवरु न जीवै कोइ ॥
O Nanak, no one else is truly alive;
ਜੇ ਜੀਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਲਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jae Jeevai Path Lathhee Jaae ||
जे जीवै पति लथी जाइ ॥
Those who merely live shall depart in dishonor;
ਸਭੁ ਹਰਾਮੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
Sabh Haraam Jaethaa Kishh Khaae ||
सभु हरामु जेता किछु खाइ ॥
Everything they eat is impure.
ਰਾਜਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਲਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
Raaj Rang Maal Rang ||
राजि रंगु मालि रंगु ॥
Intoxicated with power and thrilled with wealth,
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਨਚੈ ਨੰਗੁ ॥
Rang Rathaa Nachai Nang ||
रंगि रता नचै नंगु ॥
They delight in their pleasures, and dance about shamelessly.
ਨਾਨਕ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
Naanak Thagiaa Muthaa Jaae ||
नानक ठगिआ मुठा जाइ ॥
O Nanak, they are deluded and defrauded.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥

विणु नावै पति गइआ गवाइ ॥१॥
Without the Lord's Name, they lose their honor and depart. ||1||

ਜਾ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

जा मनि नाही सचा सोइ ॥
If the True Lord does not abide within the mind?
ਕਿਆ ਮੇਵਾ ਕਿਆ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੈਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਸੁ ॥
Kiaa Maevaa Kiaa Ghio Gurr Mithaa Kiaa Maidhaa Kiaa Maas ||
किआ मेवा किआ घिउ गुड़ु मिठा किआ मैदा किआ मासु ॥
What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?
ਕਿਆ ਕਪੜੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ॥
Kiaa Kaparr Kiaa Saej Sukhaalee Keejehi Bhog Bilaas ||
किआ कपड़ु किआ सेज सुखाली कीजहि भोग बिलास ॥
What good are clothes, and what good is a soft bed, to enjoy pleasures and sensual delights?
ਕਿਆ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਿਆ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਆਵੈ ਮਹਲੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
Kiaa Lasakar Kiaa Naeb Khavaasee Aavai Mehalee Vaas ||
किआ लसकर किआ नेब खवासी आवै महली वासु ॥
What good is an army, and what good are soldiers, servants and mansions to live in?
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੇ ਟੋਲ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Sachae Naam Vin Sabhae Ttol Vinaas ||2||
नानक सचे नाम विणु सभे टोल विणासु ॥२॥
O Nanak, without the True Name, all this paraphernalia shall disappear. ||2||

जाती दै किआ हथि सचु परखीऐ ॥
What good is social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within.
ਮਹੁਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਚਖੀਐ ॥
Mahuraa Hovai Hathh Mareeai Chakheeai ||
महुरा होवै हथि मरीऐ चखीऐ ॥
Pride in one's status is like poison-holding it in your hand and eating it, you shall die.
ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
Sachae Kee Sirakaar Jug Jug Jaaneeai ||
सचे की सिरकार जुगु जुगु जाणीऐ ॥
The True Lord's Sovereign Rule is known throughout the ages.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣੀਐ ॥
Hukam Mannae Siradhaar Dhar Dheebaaneeai ||
हुकमु मंने सिरदारु दरि दीबाणीऐ ॥
One who respects the Hukam of the Lord's Command is honored and respected in the Court of the Lord.
ਫੁਰਮਾਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਾਰ ਖਸਮਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ॥
Furamaanee Hai Kaar Khasam Pathaaeiaa ||
फुरमानी है कार खसमि पठाइआ ॥
By the Order of our Lord and Master, we have been brought into this world.
ਤਬਲਬਾਜ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

तबलबाज बीचार सबदि सुणाइआ ॥

Some have mounted their horses in response, and others are saddling up.
ਇਕਨੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ਇਕਨਾ ਤਾਖਤੀ ॥੧੦॥
Eikanee Badhhae Bhaar Eikanaa Thaakhathee ||10||
इकनी बधे भार इकना ताखती ॥१०॥
Some have tied up their bridles, and others have already ridden off. ||10||

ਜਾ ਪਕਾ ਤਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਰਹੀ ਸੁ ਪਲਰਿ ਵਾੜਿ ॥
Jaa Pakaa Thaa Kattiaa Rehee S Palar Vaarr ||
जा पका ता कटिआ रही सु पलरि वाड़ि ॥
When the crop is ripe, then it is cut down; only the stalks are left standing.
ਸਣੁ ਕੀਸਾਰਾ ਚਿਥਿਆ ਕਣੁ ਲਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਝਾੜਿ ॥
San Keesaaraa Chithhiaa Kan Laeiaa Than Jhaarr ||
सणु कीसारा चिथिआ कणु लइआ तनु झाड़ि ॥
The corn on the cob is put into the thresher, and the kernels are separated from the cobs.
ਦੁਇ ਪੁੜ ਚਕੀ ਜੋੜਿ ਕੈ ਪੀਸਣ ਆਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥
Dhue Purr Chakee Jorr Kai Peesan Aae Behith ||
दुइ पुड़ चकी जोड़ि कै पीसण आइ बहिठु ॥
Placing the kernels between the two mill-stones, people sit and grind the corn.
ਜੋ ਦਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਜਬੁ ਡਿਠੁ ॥੧॥
Jo Dhar Rehae S Oubarae Naanak Ajab Ddith ||1||
जो दरि रहे सु उबरे नानक अजबु डिठु ॥१॥
Those kernels which stick to the central axle are spared-Nanak has seen this wonderful vision! ||1||
