ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
Dhhaavath Raakhai Thaak Rehaaeae ||
धावतु राखै ठाकि रहाए ॥
The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place.
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥
Sachaa Naam Mann Vasaaeae ||4||
सचा नामु मंनि वसाए ॥४॥
The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4||
ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਦੀ ॥
Bisam Binodh Rehae Paramaadhee ||
बिसम बिनोद रहे परमादी ॥
The exciting and intoxicating worldly plays come to an end,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
Guramath Maaniaa Eaek Liv Laagee ||
गुरमति मानिआ एक लिव लागी ॥
For those who accept the Guru's Teachings, and become lovingly attuned to the One Lord.
ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਗੀ ॥
Dhaekh Nivaariaa Jal Mehi Aagee ||
देखि निवारिआ जल महि आगी ॥
Seeing this, the fire in the water is extinguished.
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੫॥
So Boojhai Hovai Vaddabhaagee ||5||
सो बूझै होवै वडभागी ॥५॥
They alone realize this, who are blessed by great good fortune. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
Sathigur Saevae Bharam Chukaaeae ||
सतिगुरु सेवे भरमु चुकाए ॥
Serving the True Guru, doubt is dispelled.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
Anadhin Jaagai Sach Liv Laaeae ||
अनदिनु जागै सचि लिव लाए ॥
Those who are lovingly attuned to the True Lord remain awake and aware night and day.
ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Eaeko Jaanai Avar N Koe ||
एको जाणै अवरु न कोइ ॥
They know the One Lord, and no other.
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
Sukhadhaathaa Saevae Niramal Hoe ||6||
सुखदाता सेवे निरमलु होइ ॥६॥
Serving the Giver of peace, they become immaculate. ||6||
ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
Saevaa Surath Sabadh Veechaar ||
सेवा सुरति सबदि वीचारि ॥
Selfless service and intuitive awareness come by reflecting upon the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
Jap Thap Sanjam Houmai Maar ||
जपु तपु संजमु हउमै मारि ॥
Chanting, intensive meditation and austere self-discipline come by subduing the ego.
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
Jeevan Mukath Jaa Sabadh Sunaaeae ||
जीवन मुकतु जा सबदु सुणाए ॥
One becomes Jivan-mukta - liberated while yet alive, by listening to the Shabad.
ਸਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
Sachee Rehath Sachaa Sukh Paaeae ||7||
सची रहत सचा सुखु पाए ॥७॥
Living a truthful way of life, one finds true peace. ||7||
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
Sukhadhaathaa Dhukh Maettanehaaraa ||
सुखदाता दुखु मेटणहारा ॥
The Giver of peace is the Eradicator of pain.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੀਜੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
Avar N Soojhas Beejee Kaaraa ||
अवरु न सूझसि बीजी कारा ॥
I cannot conceive of serving any other.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥
Than Man Dhhan Har Aagai Raakhiaa ||
तनु मनु धनु हरि आगै राखिआ ॥
I place my body, mind and wealth in offering before Him.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥

नानकु कहै महा रसु चाखिआ ॥८॥२॥
Says Nanak, I have tasted the supreme, sublime Essence of the Lord. ||8||2||

Nivalee Karam Bhuangam Bhaathee Raechak Poorak Kunbh Karai ||
निवली करम भुअंगम भाठी रेचक पूरक कु्मभ करै ॥
You may perform exercises of inner purification, and fire up the furnace of the Kundalini, inhaling and exhaling and holding the breath.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬੂਡਿ ਮਰੈ ॥
Bin Sathigur Kishh Sojhee Naahee Bharamae Bhoolaa Boodd Marai ||
बिनु सतिगुर किछु सोझी नाही भरमे भूला बूडि मरै ॥
Without the True Guru, you will not understand; deluded by doubt, you shall drown and die.
ਅੰਧਾ ਭਰਿਆ ਭਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਹੈ ॥
Andhhaa Bhariaa Bhar Bhar Dhhovai Anthar Kee Mal Kadhae N Lehai ||
अंधा भरिआ भरि भरि धोवै अंतर की मलु कदे न लहै ॥
The spiritually blind are filled with filth and pollution; they may wash, but the filth within shall never depart.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਫੋਕਟ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਜੀਗਰੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੈ ॥੧॥
Naam Binaa Fokatt Sabh Karamaa Jio Baajeegar Bharam Bhulai ||1||
नाम बिना फोकट सभि करमा जिउ बाजीगरु भरमि भुलै ॥१॥
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all their actions are useless, like the magician who deceives through illuions. ||1||
ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Khatt Karam Naam Niranjan Soee ||
खटु करम नामु निरंजनु सोई ॥
The merits of the six religious rituals are obtained through the Immaculate Naam.
ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਮੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तू गुण सागरु अवगुण मोही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
You, O Lord, are the Ocean of virtue; I am so unworthy. ||1||Pause||
ਮਾਇਆ ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਣੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
Maaeiaa Dhhandhhaa Dhhaavanee Dhuramath Kaar Bikaar ||
माइआ धंधा धावणी दुरमति कार बिकार ॥
Running around chasing the entanglements of Maya is an evil-minded act of corruption.
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇਦਾ ਬੂਝਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਾਰ ॥
Moorakh Aap Ganaaeidhaa Boojh N Sakai Kaar ||
मूरखु आपु गणाइदा बूझि न सकै कार ॥
The fool makes a show of his self-conceit; he does not know how to behave.
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲ ਖੁਆਰ ॥
Manasaa Maaeiaa Mohanee Manamukh Bol Khuaar ||
मनसा माइआ मोहणी मनमुख बोल खुआर ॥
The self-willed manmukh is enticed by his desires for Maya; his words are useless and empty.
ਮਜਨੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕਾ ਫੋਕਟ ਚਾਰ ਸੀਂਗਾਰ ॥੨॥
Majan Jhoothaa Chanddaal Kaa Fokatt Chaar Seenagaar ||2||
मजनु झूठा चंडाल का फोकट चार सींगार ॥२॥
The ritual cleansings of the sinner are fradulent; his rituals and decorations are useless and empty. ||2||
ਝੂਠੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਬਿਬਾਦੁ ॥
Jhoothee Man Kee Math Hai Karanee Baadh Bibaadh ||
झूठी मन की मति है करणी बादि बिबादु ॥
False is the wisdom of the mind; its actions inspire useless disputes.
ਝੂਠੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਹੰਕਰਣੁ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
Jhoothae Vich Ahankaran Hai Khasam N Paavai Saadh ||
झूठे विचि अहंकरणु है खसम न पावै सादु ॥
The false are filled with egotism; they do not obtain the sublime taste of their Lord and Master.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਫਿਕਾ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
Bin Naavai Hor Kamaavanaa Fikaa Aavai Saadh ||
बिनु नावै होरु कमावणा फिका आवै सादु ॥
Without the Name, whatever else they do is tasteless and insipid.
ਦੁਸਟੀ ਸਭਾ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਵਾਤੀ ਜੀਵਣ ਬਾਦਿ ॥੩॥
Dhusattee Sabhaa Vigucheeai Bikh Vaathee Jeevan Baadh ||3||
दुसटी सभा विगुचीऐ बिखु वाती जीवण बादि ॥३॥
Associating with their enemies, they are plundered and ruined. Their speech is poison, and their lives are useless. ||3||
ਏ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਮਰਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
Eae Bhram Bhoolae Marahu N Koee ||
ए भ्रमि भूले मरहु न कोई ॥
Do not be deluded by doubt; do not invite your own death.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
Sathigur Saev Sadhaa Sukh Hoee ||
सतिगुरु सेवि सदा सुखु होई ॥
Serve the True Guru, and you shall be at peace forever.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर मुकति किनै न पाई ॥
Without the True Guru, no one is liberated.
ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥
Aavehi Jaanhi Marehi Mar Jaaee ||4||
आवहि जांहि मरहि मरि जाई ॥४॥
They come and go in reincarnation; they die, only to be reborn and die again. ||4||
ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
Eaehu Sareer Hai Thrai Gun Dhhaath ||
एहु सरीरु है त्रै गुण धातु ॥
This body wanders, caught in the three dispositions.
ਇਸ ਨੋ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥
Eis No Viaapai Sog Santhaap ||
इस नो विआपै सोग संतापु ॥
It is afflicted by sorrow and suffering.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਾਈ ਨ ਬਾਪੁ ॥
So Saevahu Jis Maaee N Baap ||
सो सेवहु जिसु माई न बापु ॥
So serve the One who has no mother or father.
ਵਿਚਹੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਆਪੁ ॥੫॥
Vichahu Chookai Thisanaa Ar Aap ||5||
विचहु चूकै तिसना अरु आपु ॥५॥
Desire and selfishness shall depart from within. ||5||
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸੋਈ ॥
Jeh Jeh Dhaekhaa Theh Theh Soee ||
जह जह देखा तह तह सोई ॥
Wherever I look, I see Him.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
Bin Sathigur Bhaettae Mukath N Hoee ||
बिनु सतिगुर भेटे मुकति न होई ॥
Without meeting the True Guru, no one is liberated.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਏਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
Hiradhai Sach Eaeh Karanee Saar ||
हिरदै सचु एह करणी सारु ॥
Enshrine the True One in your heart; this is the most excellent action.
ਹੋਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਪੂਜ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੬॥
Hor Sabh Paakhandd Pooj Khuaar ||6||
होरु सभु पाखंडु पूज खुआरु ॥६॥
All other hypocritical actions and devotions bring only ruin. ||6||
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
Dhubidhhaa Chookai Thaan Sabadh Pashhaan ||
दुबिधा चूकै तां सबदु पछाणु ॥
When one is rid of duality, then he realizes the Word of the Shabad.
ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
Ghar Baahar Eaeko Kar Jaan ||
घरि बाहरि एको करि जाणु ॥
Inside and out, he knows the One Lord.
ਏਹਾ ਮਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
Eaehaa Math Sabadh Hai Saar ||
एहा मति सबदु है सारु ॥
This is the most Excellent Wisdom of the Shabad.
ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਥੈ ਪਵੈ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
Vich Dhubidhhaa Maathhai Pavai Shhaar ||7||
विचि दुबिधा माथै पवै छारु ॥७॥
Ashes fall on the heads of those who are in duality. ||7||
ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
Karanee Keerath Guramath Saar ||
करणी कीरति गुरमति सारु ॥
To praise the Lord through the Guru's Teachings is the most excellent action.
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Santh Sabhaa Gun Giaan Beechaar ||
संत सभा गुण गिआनु बीचारु ॥
In the Society of the Saints, contemplate the Glories of God and His spiritual wisdom.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
Man Maarae Jeevath Mar Jaan ||
मनु मारे जीवत मरि जाणु ॥
Whoever subdues his mind, knows the state of being dead while yet alive.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
Naanak Nadharee Nadhar Pashhaan ||8||3||
नानक नदरी नदरि पछाणु ॥८॥३॥
O Nanak, by His Grace, the Gracious Lord is realized. ||8||3||
