ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰਤਿ ਜਮਦੂਤਨਹ ॥੩੪॥
Keerathanan Saadhhasangaen Naanak Neh Dhrisattanth Jamadhoothaneh ||34||
कीरतनं साधसंगेण नानक नह द्रिसटंति जमदूतनह ॥३४॥
And sings the Kirtan of His Praises in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak, shall never see the Messenger of Death. ||34||
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਧਨੰ ਰੂਪੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਰਾਜਨਹ ॥
Nach Dhuralabhan Dhhanan Roopan Nach Dhuralabhan Svarag Raajaneh ||
नच दुरलभं धनं रूपं नच दुरलभं स्वरग राजनह ॥
Wealth and beauty are not so difficult to obtain. Paradise and royal power are not so difficult to obtain.
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਭੋਜਨੰ ਬਿੰਜਨੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸ੍ਵਛ ਅੰਬਰਹ ॥
Nach Dhuralabhan Bhojanan Binjanan Nach Dhuralabhan Svashh Anbareh ||
नच दुरलभं भोजनं बिंजनं नच दुरलभं स्वछ अ्मबरह ॥
Foods and delicacies are not so difficult to obtain. Elegant clothes are not so difficuilt to obtain.
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸੁਤ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸਹ ॥
Nach Dhuralabhan Suth Mithr Bhraath Baandhhav Nach Dhuralabhan Banithaa Bilaaseh ||
नच दुरलभं सुत मित्र भ्रात बांधव नच दुरलभं बनिता बिलासह ॥
Children, friends, siblings and relatives are not so difficult to obtain. The pleasures of woman are not so difficult to obtain.
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਣੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਚਤੁਰ ਚੰਚਲਹ ॥
Nach Dhuralabhan Bidhiaa Prabeenan Nach Dhuralabhan Chathur Chanchaleh ||
नच दुरलभं बिदिआ प्रबीणं नच दुरलभं चतुर चंचलह ॥
Knowledge and wisdom are not so difficult to obtain. Cleverness and trickery are not so difficult to obtain.
ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨਾਮਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਿੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੰ ॥੩੫॥
Dhuralabhan Eaek Bhagavaan Naameh Naanak Labadhhiyan Saadhhasang Kirapaa Prabhan ||35||
दुरलभं एक भगवान नामह नानक लबध्यिं साधसंगि क्रिपा प्रभं ॥३५॥
Only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is difficult to obtain. O Nanak, it is only obtained by God's Grace, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||35||
ਜਤ ਕਤਹ ਤਤਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਮਰਤ ਪਯਾਲ ਲੋਕਹ ॥
Jath Katheh Thatheh Dhrisattan Svarag Marath Payaal Lokeh ||
जत कतह ततह द्रिसटं स्वरग मरत पयाल लोकह ॥
Wherever I look, I see the Lord, whether in this world, in paradise, or the nether regions of the underworld.
ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਰਮਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥੩੬॥
Sarabathr Ramanan Gobindheh Naanak Laep Shhaep N Lipyathae ||36||
सरबत्र रमणं गोबिंदह नानक लेप छेप न लिप्यते ॥३६॥
The Lord of the Universe is All-pervading everywhere. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||36||
ਬਿਖਯਾ ਭਯੰਤਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੰ ਦ੍ਰੁਸਟਾਂ ਸਖਾ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥
Bikhayaa Bhayanth Anmrithan Dhraasattaan Sakhaa Svajaneh ||
बिखया भयंति अम्रितं द्रुसटां सखा स्वजनह ॥
Poison is transformed into nectar, and enemies into friends and companions.
ਦੁਖੰ ਭਯੰਤਿ ਸੁਖ੍ਯ੍ਯੰ ਭੈ ਭੀਤੰ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਯਹ ॥
Dhukhan Bhayanth Sukhyan Bhai Bheethan Th Nirabhayeh ||
दुखं भयंति सुख्यं भै भीतं त निरभयह ॥
Pain is changed into pleasure, and the fearful become fearless.
ਥਾਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਹ ॥੩੭॥
Thhaan Bihoon Bisraam Naaman Naanak Kirapaal Har Har Gureh ||37||
थान बिहून बिस्राम नामं नानक क्रिपाल हरि हरि गुरह ॥३७॥
Those who have no home or place find their place of rest in the Naam, O Nanak, when the Guru, the Lord, becomes Merciful. ||37||
ਸਰਬ ਸੀਲ ਮਮੰ ਸੀਲੰ ਸਰਬ ਪਾਵਨ ਮਮ ਪਾਵਨਹ ॥
Sarab Seel Maman Seelan Sarab Paavan Mam Paavaneh ||
सरब सील ममं सीलं सरब पावन मम पावनह ॥
He blesses all with humility; He has blessed me with humility as well. He purifies all, and He has purified me as well.
ਸਰਬ ਕਰਤਬ ਮਮੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥੩੮॥
Sarab Karathab Maman Karathaa Naanak Laep Shhaep N Lipyathae ||38||
सरब करतब ममं करता नानक लेप छेप न लिप्यते ॥३८॥
The Creator of all is the Creator of me as well. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||38||
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਵਹ ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨਹ ॥
Neh Seethalan Chandhr Dhaeveh Neh Seethalan Baavan Chandhaneh ||
नह सीतलं चंद्र देवह नह सीतलं बावन चंदनह ॥
The moon-god is not cool and calm, nor is the white sandalwood tree.
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸੀਤ ਰੁਤੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੩੯॥
Neh Seethalan Seeth Ruthaen Naanak Seethalan Saadhh Svajaneh ||39||
नह सीतलं सीत रुतेण नानक सीतलं साध स्वजनह ॥३९॥
The winter season is not cool; O Nanak, only the Holy friends, the Saints, are cool and calm. ||39||

Through the Mantra of the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, one meditates on the All-pervading Lord.
ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੰ ਸਮ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖੰ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਵੈਰਣਹ ॥
Gyaanan Sam Dhukh Sukhan Jugath Niramal Niravairaneh ||
ग्यानं सम दुख सुखं जुगति निरमल निरवैरणह ॥
Those who have the wisdom to look alike upon pleasure and pain, live the immaculate lifestyle, free of vengeance.
ਦਯਾਲੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਆ ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਵਰਜਿਤਹ ॥
Dhayaalan Sarabathr Jeeaa Panch Dhokh Bivarajitheh ||
दयालं सरबत्र जीआ पंच दोख बिवरजितह ॥
They are kind to all beings; they have overpowered the five thieves.
ਭੋਜਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਅਲਪ ਮਾਯਾ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਰਹਤਹ ॥
Bhojanan Gopaal Keerathanan Alap Maayaa Jal Kamal Rehatheh ||
भोजनं गोपाल कीरतनं अलप माया जल कमल रहतह ॥
They take the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise as their food; they remain untouched by Maya, like the lotus in the water.
ਉਪਦੇਸੰ ਸਮ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਵਨੀ ॥
Oupadhaesan Sam Mithr Sathreh Bhagavanth Bhagath Bhaavanee ||
उपदेसं सम मित्र सत्रह भगवंत भगति भावनी ॥
They share the Teachings with friend and enemy alike; they love the devotional worship of God.
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਹ ਸ੍ਰੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੰ ਆਪੁ ਤ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਰੇਣੁਕਹ ॥
Par Nindhaa Neh Sroth Sravanan Aap Thiyaag Sagal Raenukeh ||
पर निंदा नह स्रोति स्रवणं आपु ित्यागि सगल रेणुकह ॥
They do not listen to slander; renouncing self-conceit, they become the dust of all.
ਖਟ ਲਖ੍ਯ੍ਯਣ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੪੦॥
Khatt Lakhyan Pooranan Purakheh Naanak Naam Saadhh Svajaneh ||40||
खट लख्यण पूरनं पुरखह नानक नाम साध स्वजनह ॥४०॥
Whoever has these six qualities, O Nanak, is called a Holy friend. ||40||
ਅਜਾ ਭੋਗੰਤ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲੰ ਬਸੰਤੇ ਸਮੀਪਿ ਕੇਹਰਹ ॥
Ajaa Bhoganth Kandh Moolan Basanthae Sameep Kaehareh ||
अजा भोगंत कंद मूलं बसंते समीपि केहरह ॥
The goat enjoys eating fruits and roots, but if it lives near a tiger, it is always anxious.
ਤਤ੍ਰ ਗਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖੰ ਬਿਆਪਤੇ ॥੪੧॥
Thathr Gathae Sansaareh Naanak Sog Harakhan Biaapathae ||41||
तत्र गते संसारह नानक सोग हरखं बिआपते ॥४१॥
This is the condition of the world, O Nanak; it is afflicted by pleasure and pain. ||41||
ਛਲੰ ਛਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਘਨੰ ਅਪਰਾਧੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਮਲੰ ॥
Shhalan Shhidhran Kott Bighanan Aparaadhhan Kilabikh Malan ||
छलं छिद्रं कोटि बिघनं अपराधं किलबिख मलं ॥
Fraud, false accusations, millions of diseases, sins and the filthy residues of evil mistakes;
ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨੰ ਮਦੰ ਮਾਯਾ ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ ॥
Bharam Mohan Maan Apamaanan Madhan Maayaa Biaapithan ||
भरम मोहं मान अपमानं मदं माया बिआपितं ॥
Doubt, emotional attachment, pride, dishonor and intoxication with Maya
ਮ੍ਰਿਤ੍ਯ੍ਯੁ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮੰਤਿ ਨਰਕਹ ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵੰ ਨ ਸਿਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਤੇ ॥
Mrithya Janam Bhramanth Narakeh Anik Oupaavan N Sidhhyathae ||
म्रित्यु जनम भ्रमंति नरकह अनिक उपावं न सिध्यते ॥
These lead mortals to death and rebirth, wandering lost in hell. In spite of all sorts of efforts, salvation is not found.

तरण सरण सुआमी रमण सील परमेसुरह ॥
In the Sanctuary of the Kind-hearted Lord, our Transcendent Lord and Master, we are carried across.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥਹ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥

करण कारण समरथह दानु देत प्रभु पूरनह ॥
God is the Perfect, All-powerful Cause of causes; He is the Giver of gifts.
ਨਿਰਾਸ ਆਸ ਕਰਣੰ ਸਗਲ ਅਰਥ ਆਲਯਹ ॥
Niraas Aas Karanan Sagal Arathh Aalayeh ||
निरास आस करणं सगल अरथ आलयह ॥
He gives hope to the hopeless. He is the Source of all riches.
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਜਾਚਿਕਹ ॥੪੩॥
Gun Nidhhaan Simaranth Naanak Sagal Jaachanth Jaachikeh ||43||
गुण निधान सिमरंति नानक सगल जाचंत जाचिकह ॥४३॥
Nanak meditates in remembrance on the Treasure of Virtue; we are all beggars, begging at His Door. ||43||
ਦੁਰਗਮ ਸਥਾਨ ਸੁਗਮੰ ਮਹਾ ਦੂਖ ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖਣਹ ॥
Dhuragam Sathhaan Sugaman Mehaa Dhookh Sarab Sookhaneh ||
दुरगम सथान सुगमं महा दूख सरब सूखणह ॥
The most difficult place becomes easy, and the worst pain turns into pleasure.
ਦੁਰਬਚਨ ਭੇਦ ਭਰਮੰ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਿਸਨੰ ਤ ਸੁਰਜਨਹ ॥
Dhurabachan Bhaedh Bharaman Saakath Pisanan Th Surajaneh ||
दुरबचन भेद भरमं साकत पिसनं त सुरजनह ॥
Evil words, differences and doubts are obliterated, and even faithless cynics and malicious gossips become good people.
ਅਸਥਿਤੰ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖੰ ਭੈ ਖੀਣੰ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਵਹ ॥
Asathhithan Sog Harakhan Bhai Kheenan Th Nirabhaveh ||
असथितं सोग हरखं भै खीणं त निरभवह ॥
They become steady and stable, whether happy or sad; their fears are taken away, and they are fearless.
