ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
Man Mehi Krodhh Mehaa Ahankaaraa ||
मन महि क्रोधु महा अहंकारा ॥
Within the mind dwell anger and massive ego.
ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
Poojaa Karehi Bahuth Bisathhaaraa ||
पूजा करहि बहुतु बिसथारा ॥
Worship services are performed with great pomp and ceremony.
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥
Kar Eisanaan Than Chakr Banaaeae ||
करि इसनानु तनि चक्र बणाए ॥
Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body.
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥
Anthar Kee Mal Kab Hee N Jaaeae ||1||
अंतर की मलु कब ही न जाए ॥१॥
But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1||
ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Eith Sanjam Prabh Kin Hee N Paaeiaa ||
इतु संजमि प्रभु किन ही न पाइआ ॥
No one has ever found God in this way.
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

भगउती मुद्रा मनु मोहिआ माइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause||
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
Paap Karehi Panchaan Kae Bas Rae ||
पाप करहि पंचां के बसि रे ॥
They commit sins, under the influence of the five thieves.
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥
Theerathh Naae Kehehi Sabh Outharae ||
तीरथि नाइ कहहि सभि उतरे ॥
They bathe at sacred shrines, and claim that everything has been washed off.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥
Bahur Kamaavehi Hoe Nisank ||
बहुरि कमावहि होइ निसंक ॥
Then they commit them again, without fear of the consequences.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥
Jam Pur Baandhh Kharae Kaalank ||2||
जम पुरि बांधि खरे कालंक ॥२॥
The sinners are bound and gagged, and taken to the City of Death. ||2||
ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥
Ghooghar Baadhh Bajaavehi Thaalaa ||
घूघर बाधि बजावहि ताला ॥
The ankle-bells shake and the cymbals vibrate,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥
Anthar Kapatt Firehi Baethaalaa ||
अंतरि कपटु फिरहि बेताला ॥
But those who have deception within wander lost like demons.
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥
Varamee Maaree Saap N Mooaa ||
वरमी मारी सापु न मूआ ॥
By destroying its hole, the snake is not killed.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥

प्रभु सभ किछु जानै जिनि तू कीआ ॥३॥
God, who created you, knows everything. ||3||

पूंअर ताप गेरी के बसत्रा ॥
You worship fire and wear saffron colored robes.
ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥
Apadhaa Kaa Maariaa Grih Thae Nasathaa ||
अपदा का मारिआ ग्रिह ते नसता ॥
Stung by your misfortune, you abandon your home.
ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥
Dhaes Shhodd Paradhaesehi Dhhaaeiaa ||
देसु छोडि परदेसहि धाइआ ॥
Leaving your own country, you wander in foreign lands.
ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
Panch Chanddaal Naalae Lai Aaeiaa ||4||
पंच चंडाल नाले लै आइआ ॥४॥
But you bring the five rejects with you. ||4||
ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥
Kaan Faraae Hiraaeae Ttookaa ||
कान फराइ हिराए टूका ॥
You have split your ears, and now you steal crumbs.
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥
Ghar Ghar Maangai Thripathaavan Thae Chookaa ||
घरि घरि मांगै त्रिपतावन ते चूका ॥
You beg from door to door, but you fail to be satisfied.
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
Banithaa Shhodd Badh Nadhar Par Naaree ||
बनिता छोडि बद नदरि पर नारी ॥
You have abandoned your own wife, but now you sneak glances at other women.
ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥
Vaes N Paaeeai Mehaa Dhukhiaaree ||5||
वेसि न पाईऐ महा दुखिआरी ॥५॥
God is not found by wearing religious robes; you are utterly miserable! ||5||
ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥
Bolai Naahee Hoe Baithaa Monee ||
बोलै नाही होइ बैठा मोनी ॥
He does not speak; he is on silence.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥
Anthar Kalap Bhavaaeeai Jonee ||
अंतरि कलप भवाईऐ जोनी ॥
But he is filled with desire; he is made to wander in reincarnation.
ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥
Ann Thae Rehathaa Dhukh Dhaehee Sehathaa ||
अंन ते रहता दुखु देही सहता ॥
Abstaining from food, his body suffers in pain.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥
Hukam N Boojhai Viaapiaa Mamathaa ||6||
हुकमु न बूझै विआपिआ ममता ॥६॥
He does not realize the Hukam of the Lord's Command; he is afflicted by possessiveness. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥
Bin Sathigur Kinai N Paaee Param Gathae ||
बिनु सतिगुर किनै न पाई परम गते ॥
Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme status.
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥
Pooshhahu Sagal Baedh Sinmrithae ||
पूछहु सगल बेद सिम्रिते ॥
Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Simritees.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥
Manamukh Karam Karai Ajaaee ||
मनमुख करम करै अजाई ॥
The self-willed manmukhs do useless deeds.
ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥
Jio Baaloo Ghar Thour N Thaaee ||7||
जिउ बालू घर ठउर न ठाई ॥७॥
They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
Jis No Bheae Guobindh Dhaeiaalaa ||
जिस नो भए गोबिंद दइआला ॥
One unto whom the Lord of the Universe becomes Merciful,
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥
Gur Kaa Bachan Thin Baadhhiou Paalaa ||
गुर का बचनु तिनि बाधिओ पाला ॥
Sews the Word of the Guru's Shabad into his robes.
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
Kott Madhhae Koee Santh Dhikhaaeiaa ||
कोटि मधे कोई संतु दिखाइआ ॥
Out of millions, it is rare that such a Saint is seen.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥

नानकु तिन कै संगि तराइआ ॥८॥
O Nanak, with him, we are carried across. ||8||
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
Jae Hovai Bhaag Thaa Dharasan Paaeeai ||
जे होवै भागु ता दरसनु पाईऐ ॥
If one has such good destiny, then the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥

सिमरत नामु किलबिख सभि काटे ॥
Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, all the sins are erased.
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਕਾਗਰ ਫਾਟੇ ॥
Dhharam Raae Kae Kaagar Faattae ||
धरम राइ के कागर फाटे ॥
The accounts held by the Righteous Judge of Dharma are torn up.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Saadhhasangath Mil Har Ras Paaeiaa ||
साधसंगति मिलि हरि रसु पाइआ ॥
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

पारब्रहमु रिद माहि समाइआ ॥१॥
I have found the Sublime Essence of the Lord. The Supreme Lord God has melted into my heart. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Raam Ramath Har Har Sukh Paaeiaa ||
राम रमत हरि हरि सुखु पाइआ ॥
Dwelling on the Lord, Har, Har, I have found peace.
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तेरे दास चरन सरनाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Your slaves seek the Sanctuary of Your Feet. ||1||Pause||
ਚੂਕਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੁ ॥
Chookaa Goun Mittiaa Andhhiaar ||
चूका गउणु मिटिआ अंधिआरु ॥
The cycle of reincarnation is ended, and darkness is dispelled.
ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
Gur Dhikhalaaeiaa Mukath Dhuaar ||
गुरि दिखलाइआ मुकति दुआरु ॥
The Guru has revealed the door of liberation.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਦ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
Har Praem Bhagath Man Than Sadh Raathaa ||
हरि प्रेम भगति मनु तनु सद राता ॥
My mind and body are forever imbued with loving devotion to the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਨਾਇਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
Prabhoo Janaaeiaa Thab Hee Jaathaa ||2||
प्रभू जनाइआ तब ही जाता ॥२॥
Now I know God, because He has made me know Him. ||2||
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Anthar Raviaa Soe ||
घटि घटि अंतरि रविआ सोइ ॥
He is contained in each and every heart.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੀਜੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
This Bin Beejo Naahee Koe ||
तिसु बिनु बीजो नाही कोइ ॥
Without Him, there is no one at all.
ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਛੇਦੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮਾਂ ॥
Bair Birodhh Shhaedhae Bhai Bharamaan ||
बैर बिरोध छेदे भै भरमां ॥
Hatred, conflict, fear and doubt have been eliminated.
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਆਤਮੈ ਕੀਨੇ ਧਰਮਾ ॥੩॥
Prabh Punn Aathamai Keenae Dhharamaa ||3||
प्रभि पुंनि आतमै कीने धरमा ॥३॥
God, the Soul of Pure Goodness, has manifested His Righteousness. ||3||
ਮਹਾ ਤਰੰਗ ਤੇ ਕਾਂਢੈ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
Mehaa Tharang Thae Kaandtai Laagaa ||
महा तरंग ते कांढै लागा ॥
He has rescued me from the most dangerous waves.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਂਢਾ ॥
Janam Janam Kaa Ttoottaa Gaandtaa ||
जनम जनम का टूटा गांढा ॥
Separated from Him for countless lifetimes, I am united with Him once again.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
Jap Thap Sanjam Naam Samhaaliaa ||
जपु तपु संजमु नामु सम्हालिआ ॥
Chanting, intense meditation and strict self-discipline are the contemplation of the Naam.
ਅਪੁਨੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੪॥

अपुनै ठाकुरि नदरि निहालिआ ॥४॥
My Lord and Master has blessed me with His Glance of Grace. ||4||
