Keecharr Haathh N Booddee Eaekaa Nadhar Nihaal ||
कीचड़ि हाथु न बूडई एका नदरि निहालि ॥
One who sees the One and Only Lord with his eyes - his hands shall not get muddy and dirty.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਾਲਿ ॥੮॥
Naanak Guramukh Oubarae Gur Saravar Sachee Paal ||8||
नानक गुरमुखि उबरे गुरु सरवरु सची पालि ॥८॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; the Guru has surrounded the ocean with the embankment of Truth. ||8||
ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਲੋੜਿ ਲਹੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਨਿਧਿ ਜਲੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Agan Marai Jal Lorr Lahu Vin Gur Nidhh Jal Naahi ||
अगनि मरै जलु लोड़ि लहु विणु गुर निधि जलु नाहि ॥
If you wish to put out the fire, then look for water; without the Guru, the ocean of water is not found.
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
Janam Marai Bharamaaeeai Jae Lakh Karam Kamaahi ||
जनमि मरै भरमाईऐ जे लख करम कमाहि ॥
You shall continue to wander lost in reincarnation through birth and death, even if you do thousands of other deeds.
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥
Jam Jaagaath N Lagee Jae Chalai Sathigur Bhaae ||
जमु जागाति न लगई जे चलै सतिगुर भाइ ॥
But you shall not be taxed by the Messenger of Death, if you walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਮਰ ਪਦੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੈ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥੯॥
Naanak Niramal Amar Padh Gur Har Maelai Maelaae ||9||
नानक निरमलु अमर पदु गुरु हरि मेलै मेलाइ ॥९॥
O Nanak, the immaculate, immortal status is obtained, and the Guru will unite you in the Lord's Union. ||9||
ਕਲਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਛਪੜੀ ਕਊਆ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
Kalar Kaeree Shhaparree Kooaa Mal Mal Naae ||
कलर केरी छपड़ी कऊआ मलि मलि नाइ ॥
The crow rubs and washes itself in the mud puddle.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਅਵਗੁਣੀ ਚਿੰਜੁ ਭਰੀ ਗੰਧੀ ਆਇ ॥
Man Than Mailaa Avagunee Chinj Bharee Gandhhee Aae ||
मनु तनु मैला अवगुणी चिंजु भरी गंधी आइ ॥
Its mind and body are polluted with its own mistakes and demerits, and its beak is filled with dirt.
ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹੰਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਕਾਗ ਕੁਪੰਖੀ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
Saravar Hans N Jaaniaa Kaag Kupankhee Sang ||
सरवरु हंसि न जाणिआ काग कुपंखी संगि ॥
The swan in the pool associated with the crow, not knowing that it was evil.
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
Saakath Sio Aisee Preeth Hai Boojhahu Giaanee Rang ||
साकत सिउ ऐसी प्रीति है बूझहु गिआनी रंगि ॥
Such is the love of the faithless cynic; understand this, O spiritually wise ones, through love and devotion.
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥
Santh Sabhaa Jaikaar Kar Guramukh Karam Kamaao ||
संत सभा जैकारु करि गुरमुखि करम कमाउ ॥
So proclaim the victory of the Society of the Saints, and act as Gurmukh.
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਵਣੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥੧੦॥
Niramal Nhaavan Naanakaa Gur Theerathh Dhareeaao ||10||
निरमलु न्हावणु नानका गुरु तीरथु दरीआउ ॥१०॥
Immaculate and pure is that cleansing bath, O Nanak, at the sacred shrine of the Guru's river. ||10||
ਜਨਮੇ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਉ ॥
Janamae Kaa Fal Kiaa Ganee Jaan Har Bhagath N Bhaao ||
जनमे का फलु किआ गणी जां हरि भगति न भाउ ॥
What should I account as the rewards of this human life, if one does not feel love and devotion to the Lord?
ਪੈਧਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
Paidhhaa Khaadhhaa Baadh Hai Jaan Man Dhoojaa Bhaao ||
पैधा खाधा बादि है जां मनि दूजा भाउ ॥
Wearing clothes and eating food is useless, if the mind is filled with the love of duality.
ਵੇਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥
Vaekhan Sunanaa Jhooth Hai Mukh Jhoothaa Aalaao ||
वेखणु सुनणा झूठु है मुखि झूठा आलाउ ॥
Seeing and hearing is false, if one speaks lies.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧੧॥
Naanak Naam Salaahi Thoo Hor Houmai Aavo Jaao ||11||
नानक नामु सलाहि तू होरु हउमै आवउ जाउ ॥११॥
O Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; everything else is coming and going in egotism. ||11||
ਹੈਨਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਣੇ ਫੈਲ ਫਕੜੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੧੨॥
Hain Viralae Naahee Ghanae Fail Fakarr Sansaar ||12||
हैनि विरले नाही घणे फैल फकड़ु संसारु ॥१२॥
The Saints are few and far between; everything else in the world is just a pompous show. ||12||
ਨਾਨਕ ਲਗੀ ਤੁਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਜੀਵਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾਣੁ ॥
Naanak Lagee Thur Marai Jeevan Naahee Thaan ||
नानक लगी तुरि मरै जीवण नाही ताणु ॥
O Nanak, one who is struck by the Lord dies instantaneously; the power to live is lost.
ਚੋਟੈ ਸੇਤੀ ਜੋ ਮਰੈ ਲਗੀ ਸਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
Chottai Saethee Jo Marai Lagee Saa Paravaan ||
चोटै सेती जो मरै लगी सा परवाणु ॥
If someone dies by such a stroke, then he is accepted.
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਲਗੀ ਤਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
Jis No Laaeae This Lagai Lagee Thaa Paravaan ||
जिस नो लाए तिसु लगै लगी ता परवाणु ॥
He alone is struck, who is struck by the Lord; after such a stroke, he is approved.
ਪਿਰਮ ਪੈਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ॥੧੩॥
Piram Paikaam N Nikalai Laaeiaa Thin Sujaan ||13||
पिरम पैकामु न निकलै लाइआ तिनि सुजाणि ॥१३॥
The arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing Lord, cannot be pulled out. ||13||
ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧੋਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਿ ਕਚਾ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥
Bhaanddaa Dhhovai Koun J Kachaa Saajiaa ||
भांडा धोवै कउणु जि कचा साजिआ ॥
Who can wash the unbaked clay pot?
ਧਾਤੂ ਪੰਜਿ ਰਲਾਇ ਕੂੜਾ ਪਾਜਿਆ ॥
Dhhaathoo Panj Ralaae Koorraa Paajiaa ||
धातू पंजि रलाइ कूड़ा पाजिआ ॥
Joining the five elements together, the Lord made a false cover.
ਭਾਂਡਾ ਆਣਗੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਜਾਂ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥
Bhaanddaa Aanag Raas Jaan This Bhaavasee ||
भांडा आणगु रासि जां तिसु भावसी ॥
When it pleases Him, He makes it right.
ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਾਗਾਇ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੪॥
Param Joth Jaagaae Vaajaa Vaavasee ||14||
परम जोति जागाइ वाजा वावसी ॥१४॥
The supreme light shines forth, and the celestial song vibrates and resounds. ||14||
ਮਨਹੁ ਜਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਘੂਪ ਕਹਿਆ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ॥
Manahu J Andhhae Ghoop Kehiaa Biradh N Jaananee ||
मनहु जि अंधे घूप कहिआ बिरदु न जाणनी ॥
Those who are totally blind in their minds, do not have the integrity to keep their word.
ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਊਂਧੈ ਕਵਲ ਦਿਸਨਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥
Man Andhhai Oonadhhai Kaval Dhisan Kharae Karoop ||
मनि अंधै ऊंधै कवल दिसनि खरे करूप ॥
With their blind minds, and their upside-down heart-lotus, they look totally ugly.
ਇਕਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥
Eik Kehi Jaanan Kehiaa Bujhan Thae Nar Sugharr Saroop ||
इकि कहि जाणनि कहिआ बुझनि ते नर सुघड़ सरूप ॥
Some know how to speak and understand what they are told. Those people are wise and good-looking.
ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦੁ ਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥
Eikanaa Naadh N Baedh N Geea Ras Ras Kas N Jaananth ||
इकना नादु न बेदु न गीअ रसु रसु कसु न जाणंति ॥
Some do not know the Sound-current of the Naad, spiritual wisdom or the joy of song. They do not even understand good and bad.
ਇਕਨਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥
Eikanaa Sidhh N Budhh N Akal Sar Akhar Kaa Bhaeo N Lehanth ||
इकना सिधि न बुधि न अकलि सर अखर का भेउ न लहंति ॥
Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they know nothing about the mystery of the Word.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਲਿ ਖਰ ਜਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤ ॥੧੫॥
Naanak Thae Nar Asal Khar J Bin Gun Garab Karanth ||15||
नानक ते नर असलि खर जि बिनु गुण गरबु करंत ॥१५॥
O Nanak, those people are really donkeys; they have no virtue or merit, but still, they are very proud. ||15||
ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਜੋ ਬਿੰਦੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥
So Brehaman Jo Bindhai Breham ||
सो ब्रहमणु जो बिंदै ब्रहमु ॥
He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕਰਮੁ ॥
Jap Thap Sanjam Kamaavai Karam ||
जपु तपु संजमु कमावै करमु ॥
He chants and meditates, and practices austerity and good deeds.
ਸੀਲ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਰਖੈ ਧਰਮੁ ॥
Seel Santhokh Kaa Rakhai Dhharam ||
सील संतोख का रखै धरमु ॥
He keeps to the Dharma, with faith, humility and contentment.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਕਤੁ ॥
Bandhhan Thorrai Hovai Mukath ||
बंधन तोड़ै होवै मुकतु ॥
Breaking his bonds, he is liberated.
ਸੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੁ ਪੂਜਣ ਜੁਗਤੁ ॥੧੬॥
Soee Brehaman Poojan Jugath ||16||
सोई ब्रहमणु पूजण जुगतु ॥१६॥
Such a Brahmin is worthy of being worshipped. ||16||
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਸੋ ਜੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾ ਸੂਰੁ ॥
Khathree So J Karamaa Kaa Soor ||
खत्री सो जु करमा का सूरु ॥
He alone is a Kh'shaatriyaa, who is a hero in good deeds.
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਾ ਕਰੈ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥
Punn Dhaan Kaa Karai Sareer ||
पुंन दान का करै सरीरु ॥
He uses his body to give in charity;
ਖੇਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੀਜੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Khaeth Pashhaanai Beejai Dhaan ||
खेतु पछाणै बीजै दानु ॥
He understands his farm, and plants the seeds of generosity.
ਸੋ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
So Khathree Dharageh Paravaan ||
सो खत्री दरगह परवाणु ॥
Such a Kh'shaatriyaa is accepted in the Court of the Lord.
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਜੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
Lab Lobh Jae Koorr Kamaavai ||
लबु लोभु जे कूड़ु कमावै ॥
Whoever practices greed, possessiveness and falsehood,
ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧੭॥
Apanaa Keethaa Aapae Paavai ||17||
अपणा कीता आपे पावै ॥१७॥
Shall receive the fruits of his own labors. ||17||
ਤਨੁ ਨ ਤਪਾਇ ਤਨੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਣੁ ਹਡ ਨ ਬਾਲਿ ॥
Than N Thapaae Thanoor Jio Baalan Hadd N Baal ||
तनु न तपाइ तनूर जिउ बालणु हड न बालि ॥
Do not heat your body like a furnace, or burn your bones like firewood.
ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਫੇੜਿਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਿਰੀ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥੧੮॥

सिरि पैरी किआ फेड़िआ अंदरि पिरी सम्हालि ॥१८॥
What have your head and feet done wrong? See your Husband Lord within yourself. ||18||
