Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮੋੜੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਸਿਞਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ ॥
Rathae Saeee J Mukh N Morrannih Jinhee Sinjaathaa Saaee ||
रते सेई जि मुखु न मोड़ंन्हि जिन्ही सिञाता साई ॥
They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him.
ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥
Jharr Jharr Pavadhae Kachae Birehee Jinhaa Kaar N Aaee ||1||
झड़ि झड़ि पवदे कचे बिरही जिन्हा कारि न आई ॥१॥
The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1||
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
Dhhanee Vihoonaa Paatt Pattanbar Bhaahee Saethee Jaalae ||
धणी विहूणा पाट पट्मबर भाही सेती जाले ॥
Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire.
ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
Dhhoorree Vich Luddandharree Sohaan Naanak Thai Seh Naalae ||2||
धूड़ी विचि लुडंदड़ी सोहां नानक तै सह नाले ॥२॥
Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥
Gur Kai Sabadh Araadhheeai Naam Rang Bairaag ||
गुर कै सबदि अराधीऐ नामि रंगि बैरागु ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment.
ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥
Jeethae Panch Bairaaeeaa Naanak Safal Maaroo Eihu Raag ||3||
जीते पंच बैराईआ नानक सफल मारू इहु रागु ॥३॥
When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes frtuiful. ||3||
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥
Jaan Moon Eik Th Lakh Tho Jithee Pinanae Dhar Kitharrae ||
जां मूं इकु त लख तउ जिती पिनणे दरि कितड़े ॥
When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door.
ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥
Baaman Birathhaa Gaeiou Jananm Jin Keetho So Visarae ||4||
बामणु बिरथा गइओ जनमु जिनि कीतो सो विसरे ॥४॥
O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
Sorath So Ras Peejeeai Kabehoo N Feekaa Hoe ||
सोरठि सो रसु पीजीऐ कबहू न फीका होइ ॥
In Raga Sorat'h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
Naanak Raam Naam Gun Gaaeeahi Dharageh Niramal Soe ||5||
नानक राम नाम गुन गाईअहि दरगह निरमल सोइ ॥५॥
O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name, one's reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5||
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥
Jo Prabh Rakhae Aap Thin Koe N Maaree ||
जो प्रभि रखे आपि तिन कोइ न मारई ॥
No one can kill those whom God Himself protects.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
Andhar Naam Nidhhaan Sadhaa Gun Saaree ||
अंदरि नामु निधानु सदा गुण सारई ॥
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever.
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥
Eaekaa Ttaek Aganm Man Than Prabh Dhhaaree ||
एका टेक अगम मनि तनि प्रभु धारई ॥
They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body.
ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥
Lagaa Rang Apaar Ko N Outhaaree ||
लगा रंगु अपारु को न उतारई ॥
They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥
Guramukh Har Gun Gaae Sehaj Sukh Saaree ||
गुरमुखि हरि गुण गाइ सहजि सुखु सारई ॥
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥
Naanak Naam Nidhhaan Ridhai Our Haaree ||6||
नानक नामु निधानु रिदै उरि हारई ॥६॥
O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6||
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥
Karae S Changaa Maan Dhuyee Ganath Laahi ||
करे सु चंगा मानि दुयी गणत लाहि ॥
Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements.
ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥
Apanee Nadhar Nihaal Aapae Laihu Laae ||
अपणी नदरि निहालि आपे लैहु लाइ ॥
He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself.
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jan Dhaehu Mathee Oupadhaes Vichahu Bharam Jaae ||
जन देहु मती उपदेसु विचहु भरमु जाइ ॥
Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within.
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
Jo Dhhur Likhiaa Laekh Soee Sabh Kamaae ||
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु सोई सभ कमाइ ॥
Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny.
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
Sabh Kashh This Dhai Vas Dhoojee Naahi Jaae ||
सभु कछु तिस दै वसि दूजी नाहि जाइ ॥
Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥
Naanak Sukh Anadh Bheae Prabh Kee Mann Rajaae ||7||
नानक सुख अनद भए प्रभ की मंनि रजाइ ॥७॥
Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
Gur Pooraa Jin Simariaa Saeee Bheae Nihaal ||
गुरु पूरा जिन सिमरिआ सेई भए निहाल ॥
Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥
Naanak Naam Araadhhanaa Kaaraj Aavai Raas ||8||
नानक नामु अराधणा कारजु आवै रासि ॥८॥
O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8||
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥
Paapee Karam Kamaavadhae Karadhae Haaeae Haae ||
पापी करम कमावदे करदे हाए हाइ ॥
The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
Naanak Jio Mathhan Maadhhaaneeaa Thio Mathhae Dhhram Raae ||9||
नानक जिउ मथनि माधाणीआ तिउ मथे ध्रम राइ ॥९॥
O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9||
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥
Naam Dhhiaaein Saajanaa Janam Padhaarathh Jeeth ||
नामु धिआइनि साजना जनम पदारथु जीति ॥
Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
Naanak Dhharam Aisae Chavehi Keetho Bhavan Puneeth ||10||
नानक धरम ऐसे चवहि कीतो भवनु पुनीत ॥१०॥
O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one's world becomes sanctified. ||10||
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥
Khubharree Kuthhaae Mithee Galan Kumanthreeaa ||
खुभड़ी कुथाइ मिठी गलणि कुमंत्रीआ ॥
I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥
Naanak Saeee Oubarae Jinaa Bhaag Mathhaahi ||11||
नानक सेई उबरे जिना भागु मथाहि ॥११॥
O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥
Sutharrae Sukhee Savannih Jo Rathae Seh Aapanai ||
सुतड़े सुखी सवंन्हि जो रते सह आपणै ॥
They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੧੨॥
Praem Vishhohaa Dhhanee So Athae Pehar Lavannih ||12||
प्रेम विछोहा धणी सउ अठे पहर लवंन्हि ॥१२॥
Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12||
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥
Sutharrae Asankh Maaeiaa Jhoothee Kaaranae ||
सुतड़े असंख माइआ झूठी कारणे ॥
Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥
Naanak Sae Jaagannih J Rasanaa Naam Ouchaaranae ||13||
नानक से जागंन्हि जि रसना नामु उचारणे ॥१३॥
O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥
Mrig Thisanaa Paekh Bhulanae Vuthae Nagar Gandhhrab ||
म्रिग तिसना पेखि भुलणे वुठे नगर गंध्रब ॥
Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded.
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥
Jinee Sach Araadhhiaa Naanak Man Than Fab ||14||
जिनी सचु अराधिआ नानक मनि तनि फब ॥१४॥
Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14||
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
Pathith Oudhhaaran Paarabreham Sanmrathh Purakh Apaar ||
पतित उधारण पारब्रहमु सम्रथ पुरखु अपारु ॥
The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners.
