जाप न ताप न करम कीति ॥
I have not practiced meditation, austerities or good actions.
ਆਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੂ ਰੀਤਿ ॥
Aavai Naahee Kashhoo Reeth ||
आवै नाही कछू रीति ॥
I do not know the way to meet You.
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਉ ਆਸ ਏਕ ॥
Man Mehi Raakho Aas Eaek ||
मन महि राखउ आस एक ॥
Within my mind, I have placed my hopes in the One Lord alone.
ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਤਰਉ ਟੇਕ ॥੨॥
Naam Thaerae Kee Tharo Ttaek ||2||
नाम तेरे की तरउ टेक ॥२॥
The Support of Your Name shall carry me across. ||2||
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥
Sarab Kalaa Prabh Thumh Prabeen ||
सरब कला प्रभ तुम्ह प्रबीन ॥
You are the Expert, O God, in all powers.
ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਜਲਹਿ ਮੀਨ ॥
Anth N Paavehi Jalehi Meen ||
अंतु न पावहि जलहि मीन ॥
The fish cannot find the limits of the water.
ਅਗਮ ਅਗਮ ਊਚਹ ਤੇ ਊਚ ॥
Agam Agam Oocheh Thae Ooch ||
अगम अगम ऊचह ते ऊच ॥
You are Inaccessible and Unfathomable, the Highest of the High.
ਹਮ ਥੋਰੇ ਤੁਮ ਬਹੁਤ ਮੂਚ ॥੩॥
Ham Thhorae Thum Bahuth Mooch ||3||
हम थोरे तुम बहुत मूच ॥३॥
I am small, and You are so very Great. ||3||
ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਸੇ ਗਨੀ ॥
Jin Thoo Dhhiaaeiaa Sae Ganee ||
जिन तू धिआइआ से गनी ॥
Those who meditate on You are wealthy.
ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇ ਧਨੀ ॥
Jin Thoo Paaeiaa Sae Dhhanee ||
जिन तू पाइआ से धनी ॥
Those who attain You are rich.
ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸੁਖੀ ਸੇ ॥
Jin Thoo Saeviaa Sukhee Sae ||
जिनि तू सेविआ सुखी से ॥
Those who serve You are peaceful.
ਸੰਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰੇ ॥੪॥੭॥

Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Saints. ||4||7||

ਤਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਸੇਵਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥

तिसु तू सेवि जिनि तू कीआ ॥
Serve the One who created You.
ਤਿਸੁ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਜੀਉ ਦੀਆ ॥
This Araadhh Jin Jeeo Dheeaa ||
तिसु अराधि जिनि जीउ दीआ ॥
Worship the One who gave you life.
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਚਾਕਰੁ ਹੋਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਡਾਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
This Kaa Chaakar Hohi Fir Ddaan N Laagai ||
तिस का चाकरु होहि फिरि डानु न लागै ॥
Become His servant, and you shall never again be punished.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੋਤਦਾਰੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੧॥
This Kee Kar Pothadhaaree Fir Dhookh N Laagai ||1||
तिस की करि पोतदारी फिरि दूखु न लागै ॥१॥
Become His trustee, and you shall never again suffer sorrow. ||1||
ਏਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਹਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
Eaevadd Bhaag Hohi Jis Praanee ||
एवड भाग होहि जिसु प्राणी ॥
That mortal who is blessed with such great good fortune,
ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਇਹੁ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
So Paaeae Eihu Padh Nirabaanee ||1|| Rehaao ||
सो पाए इहु पदु निरबाणी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Attains this state of Nirvaanaa. ||1||Pause||
ਦੂਜੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ॥
Dhoojee Saevaa Jeevan Birathhaa ||
दूजी सेवा जीवनु बिरथा ॥
Life is wasted uselessly in the service of duality.
ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਰਥਾ ॥
Kashhoo N Hoee Hai Pooran Arathhaa ||
कछू न होई है पूरन अरथा ॥
No efforts shall be rewarded, and no works brought to fruition.
ਮਾਣਸ ਸੇਵਾ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ॥
Maanas Saevaa Kharee Dhuhaelee ||
माणस सेवा खरी दुहेली ॥
It is so painful to serve only mortal beings.
ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ॥੨॥
Saadhh Kee Saevaa Sadhaa Suhaelee ||2||
साध की सेवा सदा सुहेली ॥२॥
Service to the Holy brings lasting peace and bliss. ||2||
ਜੇ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
Jae Lorrehi Sadhaa Sukh Bhaaee ||
जे लोड़हि सदा सुखु भाई ॥
If you long for eternal peace, O Siblings of Destiny,
ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਹਿ ਬਤਾਈ ॥
Saadhhoo Sangath Gurehi Bathaaee ||
साधू संगति गुरहि बताई ॥
Then join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; this is the Guru's advice.
ਊਹਾ ਜਪੀਐ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ॥
Oohaa Japeeai Kaeval Naam ||
ऊहा जपीऐ केवल नाम ॥
There, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is meditated on.
ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਰਗਰਾਮ ॥੩॥
Saadhhoo Sangath Paaragaraam ||3||
साधू संगति पारगराम ॥३॥
In the Saadh Sangat, you shall be emancipated. ||3||
ਸਗਲ ਤਤ ਮਹਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
Sagal Thath Mehi Thath Giaan ||
सगल तत महि ततु गिआनु ॥
Among all essences, this is the essence of spiritual wisdom.
ਸਰਬ ਧਿਆਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
Sarab Dhhiaan Mehi Eaek Dhhiaan ||
सरब धिआन महि एकु धिआनु ॥
Among all meditations, meditation on the One Lord is the most sublime.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਧੁਨਾ ॥
Har Keerathan Mehi Ootham Dhhunaa ||
हरि कीरतन महि ऊतम धुना ॥
The Kirtan of the Lord's Praises is the ultimate melody.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਇ ਗੁਨਾ ॥੪॥੮॥
Naanak Gur Mil Gaae Gunaa ||4||8||
नानक गुर मिलि गाइ गुना ॥४॥८॥
Meeting with the Guru, Nanak sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||8||

Basant, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਸੁ ਬੋਲਤ ਮੁਖੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Jis Bolath Mukh Pavith Hoe ||
जिसु बोलत मुखु पवितु होइ ॥
Chanting His Name, one's mouth becomes pure.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Jis Simarath Niramal Hai Soe ||
जिसु सिमरत निरमल है सोइ ॥
Meditating in remembrance on Him, one's reputation becomes stainless.
ਜਿਸੁ ਅਰਾਧੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥
Jis Araadhhae Jam Kishh N Kehai ||
जिसु अराधे जमु किछु न कहै ॥
Worshipping Him in adoration, one is not tortured by the Messenger of Death.
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥

जिस की सेवा सभु किछु लहै ॥१॥
Serving Him, everything is obtained. ||1||

राम राम बोलि राम राम ॥
The Lord's Name - chant the Lord's Name.
ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਸਗਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तिआगहु मन के सगल काम ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Abandon all the desires of your mind. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਧਾਰੇ ਧਰਣਿ ਅਕਾਸੁ ॥
Jis Kae Dhhaarae Dhharan Akaas ||
जिस के धारे धरणि अकासु ॥
He is the Support of the earth and the sky.
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
Ghatt Ghatt Jis Kaa Hai Pragaas ||
घटि घटि जिस का है प्रगासु ॥
His Light illuminates each and every heart.
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਹੋਇ ॥
Jis Simarath Pathith Puneeth Hoe ||
जिसु सिमरत पतित पुनीत होइ ॥
Meditating in remembrance on Him, even fallen sinners are sanctified;
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਨ ਰੋਇ ॥੨॥
Anth Kaal Fir Fir N Roe ||2||
अंत कालि फिरि फिरि न रोइ ॥२॥
In the end, they will not weep and wail over and over again. ||2||
ਸਗਲ ਧਰਮ ਮਹਿ ਊਤਮ ਧਰਮ ॥
Sagal Dhharam Mehi Ootham Dhharam ||
सगल धरम महि ऊतम धरम ॥
Among all religions, this is the ultimate religion.
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਕੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਮ ॥
Karam Karathooth Kai Oopar Karam ||
करम करतूति कै ऊपरि करम ॥
Among all rituals and codes of conduct, this is above all.
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਹਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦੇਵ ॥
Jis Ko Chaahehi Sur Nar Dhaev ||
जिस कउ चाहहि सुरि नर देव ॥
The angels, mortals and divine beings long for Him.
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਕੀ ਲਗਹੁ ਸੇਵ ॥੩॥
Santh Sabhaa Kee Lagahu Saev ||3||
संत सभा की लगहु सेव ॥३॥
To find Him, commit yourself to the service of the Society of the Saints. ||3||
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਕੀਆ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
Aadh Purakh Jis Keeaa Dhaan ||
आदि पुरखि जिसु कीआ दानु ॥
One whom the Primal Lord God blesses with His bounties,
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
This Ko Miliaa Har Nidhhaan ||
तिस कउ मिलिआ हरि निधानु ॥
Obtains the treasure of the Lord.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
This Kee Gath Mith Kehee N Jaae ||
तिस की गति मिति कही न जाइ ॥
His state and extent cannot be described.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੪॥੯॥
Naanak Jan Har Har Dhhiaae ||4||9||
नानक जन हरि हरि धिआइ ॥४॥९॥
Servant Nanak meditates on the Lord, Har, Har. ||4||9||

ਗੁਰਿ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਸ ॥
Gur Dhaeiaal Pooree Maeree Aas ||
गुरि दइआलि पूरी मेरी आस ॥
The Merciful Guru has fulfilled my hopes.
ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ॥
Kilavikh Kaattae Saadhhasang ||
किलविख काटे साधसंगि ॥
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all my sins have been taken away.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੧॥
Naam Japiou Har Naam Rang ||1||
नामु जपिओ हरि नाम रंगि ॥१॥
I chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord; I am in love with the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਬਸੰਤੁ ਬਨਾ ॥
Gur Parasaadh Basanth Banaa ||
गुर परसादि बसंतु बना ॥
By Guru's Grace, this spring of the soul has come.
