Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਠਾਂਢੀ ॥
Har Kae Naam Kee Gath Thaandtee ||
हरि के नाम की गति ठांढी ॥
The Name of the Lord is cooling and soothing.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਕਾਢੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Baedh Puraan Simrith Saadhhoo Jan Khojath Khojath Kaadtee ||1|| Rehaao ||
बेद पुरान सिम्रिति साधू जन खोजत खोजत काढी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Searching, searching the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, the Holy Saints have realized this. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਵ ਬਿਰੰਚ ਅਰੁ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਜਲਤੌ ਫਿਰਿਆ ॥
Siv Biranch Ar Eindhr Lok Thaa Mehi Jalatha Firiaa ||
सिव बिरंच अरु इंद्र लोक ता महि जलतौ फिरिआ ॥
In the worlds of Shiva, Brahma and Indra, I wandered around, burning up with envy.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਏ ਸੀਤਲ ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥੧॥
Simar Simar Suaamee Bheae Seethal Dhookh Dharadh Bhram Hiriaa ||1||
सिमरि सिमरि सुआमी भए सीतल दूखु दरदु भ्रमु हिरिआ ॥१॥
Meditating, meditating in remembrance on my Lord and Master, I became cool and calm; my pains, sorrows and doubts are gone. ||1||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਤਰਿਓ ਪੁਰਾਤਨੁ ਨਵਤਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
Jo Jo Thariou Puraathan Navathan Bhagath Bhaae Har Dhaevaa ||
जो जो तरिओ पुरातनु नवतनु भगति भाइ हरि देवा ॥
Whoever has been saved in the past or the present, was saved through loving devotional worship of the Divine Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੨॥੫੨॥੭੫॥
Naanak Kee Baenanthee Prabh Jeeo Milai Santh Jan Saevaa ||2||52||75||
नानक की बेनंती प्रभ जीउ मिलै संत जन सेवा ॥२॥५२॥७५॥
This is Nanak's prayer: O Dear God, please let me serve the humble Saints. ||2||52||75||

ਜਿਹਵੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਗੁਣ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਉ ॥
Jihavae Anmrith Gun Har Gaao ||
जिहवे अम्रित गुण हरि गाउ ॥
O my tongue, sing the Ambrosial Praises of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਉਚਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Har Har Bol Kathhaa Sun Har Kee Oucharahu Prabh Ko Naao ||1|| Rehaao ||
हरि हरि बोलि कथा सुनि हरि की उचरहु प्रभ को नाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, listen to the Lord's Sermon, and chant God's Name. ||1||Pause||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਭਾਉ ॥
Raam Naam Rathan Dhhan Sanchahu Man Than Laavahu Bhaao ||
राम नामु रतन धनु संचहु मनि तनि लावहु भाउ ॥
So gather in the jewel, the wealth of the Lord's Name; love God with your mind and body.
ਆਨ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥
Aan Bibhooth Mithhiaa Kar Maanahu Saachaa Eihai Suaao ||1||
आन बिभूत मिथिआ करि मानहु साचा इहै सुआउ ॥१॥
You must realize that all other wealth is false; this alone is the true purpose of life. ||1||
ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕਸ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਉ ॥
Jeea Praan Mukath Ko Dhaathaa Eaekas Sio Liv Laao ||
जीअ प्रान मुकति को दाता एकस सिउ लिव लाउ ॥
He is the Giver of the soul, the breath of life and liberation; lovingly tune in to the One and Only Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਦੇਤ ਸਗਲ ਅਪਿਆਉ ॥੨॥੫੩॥੭੬॥
Kahu Naanak Thaa Kee Saranaaee Dhaeth Sagal Apiaao ||2||53||76||
कहु नानक ता की सरणाई देत सगल अपिआउ ॥२॥५३॥७६॥
Says Nanak, I have entered His Sanctuary; He gives sustenance to all. ||2||53||76||

ਹੋਤੀ ਨਹੀ ਕਵਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
Hothee Nehee Kavan Kashh Karanee ||
होती नही कवन कछु करणी ॥
I cannot do anything else.
ਇਹੈ ਓਟ ਪਾਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤਹ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਏਕ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Eihai Outt Paaee Mil Santheh Gopaal Eaek Kee Saranee ||1|| Rehaao ||
इहै ओट पाई मिलि संतह गोपाल एक की सरणी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
I have taken this Support, meeting the Saints; I have entered the Sanctuary of the One Lord of the World. ||1||Pause||
ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਇਆ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਕੀ ਕਰਣੀ ॥
Panch Dhokh Shhidhr Eiaa Than Mehi Bikhai Biaadhh Kee Karanee ||
पंच दोख छिद्र इआ तन महि बिखै बिआधि की करणी ॥
The five wicked enemies are within this body; they lead the mortal to practice evil and corruption.
ਆਸ ਅਪਾਰ ਦਿਨਸ ਗਣਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਜਾਤ ਬਲੁ ਜਰਣੀ ॥੧॥
Aas Apaar Dhinas Gan Raakhae Grasath Jaath Bal Jaranee ||1||
आस अपार दिनस गणि राखे ग्रसत जात बलु जरणी ॥१॥
He has infinite hope, but his days are numbered, and old age is sapping his strength. ||1||
ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਭੈ ਹਰਣੀ ॥
Anaathheh Naathh Dhaeiaal Sukh Saagar Sarab Dhokh Bhai Haranee ||
अनाथह नाथ दइआल सुख सागर सरब दोख भै हरणी ॥
He is the Help of the helpless, the Merciful Lord, the Ocean of Peace, the Destroyer of all pains and fears.
ਮਨਿ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਪੇਖਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਰਣੀ ॥੨॥੫੪॥੭੭॥
Man Baanshhath Chithavath Naanak Dhaas Paekh Jeevaa Prabh Charanee ||2||54||77||
मनि बांछत चितवत नानक दास पेखि जीवा प्रभ चरणी ॥२॥५४॥७७॥
Slave Nanak longs for this blessing, that he may live, gazing upon the Feet of God. ||2||54||77||

ਫੀਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਦ ॥
Feekae Har Kae Naam Bin Saadh ||
फीके हरि के नाम बिनु साद ॥
Without the Lord's Name, flavors are tasteless and insipid.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਈਐ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਾਦ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Anmrith Ras Keerathan Har Gaaeeai Ahinis Pooran Naadh ||1|| Rehaao ||
अम्रित रसु कीरतनु हरि गाईऐ अहिनिसि पूरन नाद ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Sing the Sweet Ambrosial Praises of the Lord's Kirtan; day and night, the Sound-current of the Naad will resonate and resound. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਮਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਖਾਦ ॥
Simarath Saanth Mehaa Sukh Paaeeai Mitt Jaahi Sagal Bikhaadh ||
सिमरत सांति महा सुखु पाईऐ मिटि जाहि सगल बिखाद ॥
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, total peace and bliss are obtained, and all sorrows are taken away.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਆਵਹੁ ਲਾਦਿ ॥੧॥
Har Har Laabh Saadhhasang Paaeeai Ghar Lai Aavahu Laadh ||1||
हरि हरि लाभु साधसंगि पाईऐ घरि लै आवहु लादि ॥१॥
The profit of the Lord, Har, Har, is found in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy; so load it and bring it on home. ||1||
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚੋ ਅੰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਜਾਦ ॥
Sabh Thae Ooch Ooch Thae Oocho Anth Nehee Marajaadh ||
सभ ते ऊच ऊच ते ऊचो अंतु नही मरजाद ॥
He is the Highest of all, the Highest of the high; His celestial ecomony has no limit.
ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥੨॥੫੫॥੭੮॥
Baran N Saako Naanak Mehimaa Paekh Rehae Bisamaadh ||2||55||78||
बरनि न साकउ नानक महिमा पेखि रहे बिसमाद ॥२॥५५॥७८॥
Nanak cannot even express His Glorious Grandeur; gazing upon Him, he is wonder-struck. ||2||55||78||

ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
Aaeiou Sunan Parran Ko Baanee ||
आइओ सुनन पड़न कउ बाणी ॥
The mortal came to hear and chant the Word of the Guru's Bani.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Naam Visaar Lagehi An Laalach Birathhaa Janam Paraanee ||1|| Rehaao ||
नामु विसारि लगहि अन लालचि बिरथा जनमु पराणी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
But he has forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and he has become attached to other temptations. His life is totally worthless! ||1||Pause||
ਸਮਝੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਥੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥
Samajh Achaeth Chaeth Man Maerae Kathhee Santhan Akathh Kehaanee ||
समझु अचेत चेति मन मेरे कथी संतन अकथ कहाणी ॥
O my unconscious mind, become conscious and figure it out; the Saints speak the Unspoken Speech of the Lord.
ਲਾਭੁ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਅਰਾਧਹੁ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੧॥
Laabh Laihu Har Ridhai Araadhhahu Shhuttakai Aavan Jaanee ||1||
लाभु लैहु हरि रिदै अराधहु छुटकै आवण जाणी ॥१॥
So gather in your profits - worship and adore the Lord within your heart; your coming and going in reincarnation shall end. ||1||
ਉਦਮੁ ਸਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
Oudham Sakath Siaanap Thumharee Dhaehi Th Naam Vakhaanee ||
उदमु सकति सिआणप तुम्हरी देहि त नामु वखाणी ॥
Efforts, powers and clever tricks are Yours; if You bless me with them, I repeat Your Name.
ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੇ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣੀ ॥੨॥੫੬॥੭੯॥
Saeee Bhagath Bhagath Sae Laagae Naanak Jo Prabh Bhaanee ||2||56||79||
सेई भगत भगति से लागे नानक जो प्रभ भाणी ॥२॥५६॥७९॥
They alone are devotees, and they alone are attached to devotional worship, O Nanak, who are pleasing to God. ||2||56||79||

धनवंत नाम के वणजारे ॥
Those who deal in the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are wealthy.
ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Saanjhee Karahu Naam Dhhan Khaattahu Gur Kaa Sabadh Veechaarae ||1|| Rehaao ||
सांझी करहु नाम धनु खाटहु गुर का सबदु वीचारे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
So become a partner with them, and earn the wealth of the Naam. Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause||
