Baedh Vapaaree Giaan Raas Karamee Palai Hoe ||
बेदु वपारी गिआनु रासि करमी पलै होइ ॥
The Vedas are only merchants; spiritual wisdom is the capital; by His Grace, it is received.

निमु बिरखु बहु संचीऐ अम्रित रसु पाइआ ॥
You can water a bitter neem tree with ambrosial nectar.
ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
Biseear Manthr Visaaheeai Bahu Dhoodhh Peeaaeiaa ||
बिसीअरु मंत्रि विसाहीऐ बहु दूधु पीआइआ ॥
You can feed a venomous snake lots of milk.
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਪਥਰੁ ਨਾਵਾਇਆ ॥
Manamukh Abhinn N Bhijee Pathhar Naavaaeiaa ||
मनमुखु अभिंनु न भिजई पथरु नावाइआ ॥
The self-willed manmukh is resistant; he cannot be softened. You might as well water a stone.
ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿੰਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Bikh Mehi Anmrith Sincheeai Bikh Kaa Fal Paaeiaa ||
बिखु महि अम्रितु सिंचीऐ बिखु का फलु पाइआ ॥
Irrigating a poisonous plant with ambrosial nectar, only poisonous fruit is obtained.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
Naanak Sangath Mael Har Sabh Bikh Lehi Jaaeiaa ||16||
नानक संगति मेलि हरि सभ बिखु लहि जाइआ ॥१६॥
O Lord, please unite Nanak with the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, so that he may be rid of all poison. ||16||

मरणि न मूरतु पुछिआ पुछी थिति न वारु ॥
Death does not ask the time; it does not ask the date or the day of the week.
ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥
Eikanhee Ladhiaa Eik Ladh Chalae Eikanhee Badhhae Bhaar ||
इकन्ही लदिआ इकि लदि चले इकन्ही बधे भार ॥
Some have packed up, and some who have packed up have gone.
ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥
Eikanhaa Hoee Saakhathee Eikanhaa Hoee Saar ||
इकन्हा होई साखती इकन्हा होई सार ॥
Some are severely punished, and some are taken care of.
ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
Lasakar Sanai Dhamaamiaa Shhuttae Bank Dhuaar ||
लसकर सणै दमामिआ छुटे बंक दुआर ॥
They must leave their armies and drums, and their beautiful mansions.
ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥

नानक ढेरी छारु की भी फिरि होई छार ॥१॥
O Nanak, the pile of dust is once again reduced to dust. ||1||

नानक ढेरी ढहि पई मिटी संदा कोटु ॥
O Nanak, the pile shall fall apart; the fortress of the body is made of dust.
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਖੋਟੁ ॥੨॥

Jin Andhar Nindhaa Dhusatt Hai Nak Vadtae Nak Vadtaaeiaa ||
जिन अंदरि निंदा दुसटु है नक वढे नक वढाइआ ॥
Those who are filled with vicious slander, shall have their noses cut, and be shamed.
ਮਹਾ ਕਰੂਪ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Mehaa Karoop Dhukheeeae Sadhaa Kaalae Muh Maaeiaa ||
महा करूप दुखीए सदा काले मुह माइआ ॥
They are totally ugly, and always in pain. Their faces are blackened by Maya.
ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥
Bhalakae Outh Nith Par Dharab Hirehi Har Naam Churaaeiaa ||
भलके उठि नित पर दरबु हिरहि हरि नामु चुराइआ ॥
They rise early in the morning, to cheat and steal from others; they hide from the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
Har Jeeo Thin Kee Sangath Math Karahu Rakh Laehu Har Raaeiaa ||
हरि जीउ तिन की संगति मत करहु रखि लेहु हरि राइआ ॥
O Dear Lord, let me not even associate with them; save me from them, O my Sovereign Lord King.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੭॥
Naanak Paeiai Kirath Kamaavadhae Manamukh Dhukh Paaeiaa ||17||
नानक पइऐ किरति कमावदे मनमुखि दुखु पाइआ ॥१७॥
O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs act according to their past deeds, producing nothing but pain. ||17||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:
ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥
Sabh Koee Hai Khasam Kaa Khasamahu Sabh Ko Hoe ||
सभु कोई है खसम का खसमहु सभु को होइ ॥
Everyone belongs to our Lord and Master. Everyone came from Him.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Hukam Pashhaanai Khasam Kaa Thaa Sach Paavai Koe ||
हुकमु पछाणै खसम का ता सचु पावै कोइ ॥
Only by realizing the Hukam of His Command, is Truth obtained.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
Guramukh Aap Pashhaaneeai Buraa N Dheesai Koe ||
गुरमुखि आपु पछाणीऐ बुरा न दीसै कोइ ॥
The Gurmukh realizes his own self; no one appears evil to him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
Naanak Guramukh Naam Dhhiaaeeai Sehilaa Aaeiaa Soe ||1||
नानक गुरमुखि नामु धिआईऐ सहिला आइआ सोइ ॥१॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Fruitful is his coming into the world. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:
ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
Sabhanaa Dhaathaa Aap Hai Aapae Maelanehaar ||
सभना दाता आपि है आपे मेलणहारु ॥
He Himself is the Giver of all; He unites all with Himself.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Sabadh Milae N Vishhurrehi Jinaa Saeviaa Har Dhaathaar ||2||
नानक सबदि मिले न विछुड़हि जिना सेविआ हरि दातारु ॥२॥
O Nanak, they are united with the Word of the Shabad; serving the Lord, the Great Giver, they shall never be separated from Him again. ||2||

Guramukh Hiradhai Saanth Hai Naao Ougav Aaeiaa ||
गुरमुखि हिरदै सांति है नाउ उगवि आइआ ॥
Peace and tranquility fill the heart of the Gurmukh; the Name wells up within them.
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
Jap Thap Theerathh Sanjam Karae Maerae Prabh Bhaaeiaa ||
जप तप तीरथ संजम करे मेरे प्रभ भाइआ ॥
Chanting and meditation, penance and self-discipline, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage - the merits of these come by pleasing my God.
ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
Hiradhaa Sudhh Har Saevadhae Sohehi Gun Gaaeiaa ||
हिरदा सुधु हरि सेवदे सोहहि गुण गाइआ ॥
So serve the Lord with a pure heart; singing His Glorious Praises, you shall be embellished and exalted.
ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥
Maerae Har Jeeo Eaevai Bhaavadhaa Guramukh Tharaaeiaa ||
मेरे हरि जीउ एवै भावदा गुरमुखि तराइआ ॥
My Dear Lord is pleased by this; he carries the Gurmukh across.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥
Naanak Guramukh Maelian Har Dhar Sohaaeiaa ||18||
नानक गुरमुखि मेलिअनु हरि दरि सोहाइआ ॥१८॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is merged with the Lord; he is embellished in His Court. ||18||

ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਇਵ ਹੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੀ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
Dhhanavanthaa Eiv Hee Kehai Avaree Dhhan Ko Jaao ||
धनवंता इव ही कहै अवरी धन कउ जाउ ॥
Thus speaks the wealthy man: I should go and get more wealth.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
Naanak Niradhhan Thith Dhin Jith Dhin Visarai Naao ||1||
नानकु निरधनु तितु दिनि जितु दिनि विसरै नाउ ॥१॥
Nanak becomes poor on that day when he forgets the Lord's Name. ||1||

सूरजु चड़ै विजोगि सभसै घटै आरजा ॥
The sun rises and sets, and the lives of all run out.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਭੋਗਿ ਕੋਈ ਹਾਰੈ ਕੋ ਜਿਣੈ ॥
Than Man Rathaa Bhog Koee Haarai Ko Jinai ||
तनु मनु रता भोगि कोई हारै को जिणै ॥
The mind and body experience pleasures; one loses, and another wins.
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਰਿਆ ਫੂਕਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੀਐ ॥
Sabh Ko Bhariaa Fook Aakhan Kehan N Thhanmheeai ||
सभु को भरिआ फूकि आखणि कहणि न थम्हीऐ ॥
Everyone is puffed up with pride; even after they are spoken to, they do not stop.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਫੂਕ ਕਢਾਏ ਢਹਿ ਪਵੈ ॥੨॥
Naanak Vaekhai Aap Fook Kadtaaeae Dtehi Pavai ||2||
नानक वेखै आपि फूक कढाए ढहि पवै ॥२॥
O Nanak, the Lord Himself sees all; when He takes the air out of the balloon, the body falls. ||2||

सतसंगति नामु निधानु है जिथहु हरि पाइआ ॥
The treasure of the Name is in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. There, the Lord is found.
