ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਲੇਹੁ ਨ ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹ ॥

नित नित लेहु न छीजै देह ॥
Take it each and every day, and your body shall not waste away.
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਠੇਹ ॥੧॥
Anth Kaal Jam Maarai Thaeh ||1||
अंत कालि जमु मारै ठेह ॥१॥
At the very last instant, you shall strike down the Messenger of Death. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਖਾਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥
Aisaa Dhaaroo Khaahi Gavaar ||
ऐसा दारू खाहि गवार ॥
So take such medicine, O fool,
ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jith Khaadhhai Thaerae Jaahi Vikaar ||1|| Rehaao ||
जितु खाधै तेरे जाहि विकार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
By which your corruption shall be taken away. ||1||Pause||
ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਂਵ ॥
Raaj Maal Joban Sabh Shhaanv ||
राजु मालु जोबनु सभु छांव ॥
Power, wealth and youth are all just shadows,
ਰਥਿ ਫਿਰੰਦੈ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਥਾਵ ॥
Rathh Firandhai Dheesehi Thhaav ||
रथि फिरंदै दीसहि थाव ॥
As are the vehicles you see moving around.
ਦੇਹ ਨ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
Dhaeh N Naao N Hovai Jaath ||
देह न नाउ न होवै जाति ॥
Neither your body, nor your fame, nor your social status shall go along with you.
ਓਥੈ ਦਿਹੁ ਐਥੈ ਸਭ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੨॥
Outhhai Dhihu Aithhai Sabh Raath ||2||
ओथै दिहु ऐथै सभ राति ॥२॥
In the next world it is day, while here, it is all night. ||2||
ਸਾਦ ਕਰਿ ਸਮਧਾਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਘਿਉ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
Saadh Kar Samadhhaan Thrisanaa Ghio Thael ||
साद करि समधां त्रिसना घिउ तेलु ॥
Let your taste for pleasures be the firewood, let your greed be the ghee,
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਗਨੀ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
Kaam Krodhh Aganee Sio Mael ||
कामु क्रोधु अगनी सिउ मेलु ॥
And your sexual desire and anger the cooking oil; burn them in the fire.
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
Hom Jag Ar Paath Puraan ||
होम जग अरु पाठ पुराण ॥
Some make burnt offerings, hold sacred feasts, and read the Puraanas.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥
Jo This Bhaavai So Paravaan ||3||
जो तिसु भावै सो परवाण ॥३॥
Whatever pleases God is acceptable. ||3||
ਤਪੁ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥
Thap Kaagadh Thaeraa Naam Neesaan ||
तपु कागदु तेरा नामु नीसानु ॥
Intense meditation is the paper, and Your Name is the insignia.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥
Jin Ko Likhiaa Eaehu Nidhhaan ||
जिन कउ लिखिआ एहु निधानु ॥
Those for whom this treasure is ordered,
ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
Sae Dhhanavanth Dhisehi Ghar Jaae ||
से धनवंत दिसहि घरि जाइ ॥
Look wealthy when they reach their true home.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨਨੀ ਧੰਨੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੮॥
Naanak Jananee Dhhannee Maae ||4||3||8||
नानक जननी धंनी माइ ॥४॥३॥८॥
O Nanak, blessed is that mother who gave birth to them. ||4||3||8||

बागे कापड़ बोलै बैण ॥
You wear white clothes, and speak sweet words.
ਲੰਮਾ ਨਕੁ ਕਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨੈਣ ॥
Lanmaa Nak Kaalae Thaerae Nain ||
लमा नकु काले तेरे नैण ॥
Your nose is sharp, and your eyes are black.
ਕਬਹੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਭੈਣ ॥੧॥
Kabehoon Saahib Dhaekhiaa Bhain ||1||
कबहूं साहिबु देखिआ भैण ॥१॥
Have you ever seen your Lord and Master, O sister? ||1||
ਊਡਾਂ ਊਡਿ ਚੜਾਂ ਅਸਮਾਨਿ ॥
Ooddaan Oodd Charraan Asamaan ||
ऊडां ऊडि चड़ां असमानि ॥
O my All-powerful Lord and Master,
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਤੇਰੈ ਤਾਣਿ ॥
Saahib Sanmrithh Thaerai Thaan ||
साहिब सम्रिथ तेरै ताणि ॥
By Your power, I fly and soar, and ascend to the heavens.
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤੀਰ ॥
Jal Thhal Ddoongar Dhaekhaan Theer ||
जलि थलि डूंगरि देखां तीर ॥
I see Him in the water, on the land, in the mountains, on the river-banks,
ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਬੀਰ ॥੨॥

थान थनंतरि साहिबु बीर ॥२॥
In all places and interspaces, O brother. ||2||
ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਦੀਏ ਨਾਲਿ ਖੰਭ ॥
Jin Than Saaj Dheeeae Naal Khanbh ||
जिनि तनु साजि दीए नालि ख्मभ ॥
He fashioned the body, and gave it wings;
ਅਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਡਣੈ ਕੀ ਡੰਝ ॥
Ath Thrisanaa Ouddanai Kee Ddanjh ||
अति त्रिसना उडणै की डंझ ॥
He gave it great thirst and desire to fly.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਬੰਧਾਂ ਧੀਰ ॥
Nadhar Karae Thaan Bandhhaan Dhheer ||
नदरि करे तां बंधां धीर ॥
When He bestows His Glance of Grace, I am comforted and consoled.
ਜਿਉ ਵੇਖਾਲੇ ਤਿਉ ਵੇਖਾਂ ਬੀਰ ॥੩॥
Jio Vaekhaalae Thio Vaekhaan Beer ||3||
जिउ वेखाले तिउ वेखां बीर ॥३॥
As He makes me see, so do I see, O brother. ||3||
ਨ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਇਗਾ ਨ ਜਾਹਿਗੇ ਖੰਭ ॥
N Eihu Than Jaaeigaa N Jaahigae Khanbh ||
न इहु तनु जाइगा न जाहिगे ख्मभ ॥
Neither this body, nor its wings, shall go to the world hereafter.
ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਸਨਬੰਧ ॥
Pounai Paanee Aganee Kaa Sanabandhh ||
पउणै पाणी अगनी का सनबंध ॥
It is a fusion of air, water and fire.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ॥
Naanak Karam Hovai Japeeai Kar Gur Peer ||
नानक करमु होवै जपीऐ करि गुरु पीरु ॥
O Nanak, if it is in the mortal's karma, then he meditates on the Lord, with the Guru as his Spiritual Teacher.
ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥੪॥੪॥੯॥

सचि समावै एहु सरीरु ॥४॥४॥९॥
This body is absorbed in the Truth. ||4||4||9||

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ॥
Nirankaar Aakaar Hai Aapae Aapae Bharam Bhulaaeae ||
निरंकारु आकारु है आपे आपे भरमि भुलाए ॥
The Formless Lord is formed by Himself. He Himself deludes in doubt.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
Kar Kar Karathaa Aapae Vaekhai Jith Bhaavai Thith Laaeae ||
करि करि करता आपे वेखै जितु भावै तितु लाए ॥
Creating the Creation, the Creator Himself beholds it; He enjoins us as He pleases.
ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਏਹਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥੧॥
Saevak Ko Eaehaa Vaddiaaee Jaa Ko Hukam Manaaeae ||1||
सेवक कउ एहा वडिआई जा कउ हुकमु मनाए ॥१॥
This is the true greatness of His servant, that he obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command. ||1||
ਆਪਣਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
Aapanaa Bhaanaa Aapae Jaanai Gur Kirapaa Thae Leheeai ||
आपणा भाणा आपे जाणै गुर किरपा ते लहीऐ ॥
Only He Himself knows His Will. By Guru's Grace, it is grasped.
ਏਹਾ ਸਕਤਿ ਸਿਵੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Eaehaa Sakath Sivai Ghar Aavai Jeevadhiaa Mar Reheeai ||1|| Rehaao ||
एहा सकति सिवै घरि आवै जीवदिआ मरि रहीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
When this play of Shiva and Shakti comes to his home, he remains dead while yet alive. ||1||Pause||
ਵੇਦ ਪੜੈ ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸਾ ॥
Vaedh Parrai Parr Vaadh Vakhaanai Brehamaa Bisan Mehaesaa ||
वेद पड़ै पड़ि वादु वखाणै ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसा ॥
They read the Vedas, and read them again, and engage in arguments about Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
ਏਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਸਹਸਾ ॥
Eaeh Thrigun Maaeiaa Jin Jagath Bhulaaeiaa Janam Maran Kaa Sehasaa ||
एह त्रिगुण माइआ जिनि जगतु भुलाइआ जनम मरण का सहसा ॥
This three-phased Maya has deluded the whole world into cynicism about death and birth.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਨਹੁ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ॥੨॥
Gur Parasaadhee Eaeko Jaanai Chookai Manahu Andhaesaa ||2||
गुर परसादी एको जाणै चूकै मनहु अंदेसा ॥२॥
By Guru's Grace, know the One Lord, and the anxiety of your mind will be allayed. ||2||
ਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਤੁਮ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
Ham Dheen Moorakh Aveechaaree Thum Chinthaa Karahu Hamaaree ||
हम दीन मूरख अवीचारी तुम चिंता करहु हमारी ॥
I am meek, foolish and thoughtless, but still, You take care of me.
ਹੋਹੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਕਰਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਾਸਾ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
Hohu Dhaeiaal Kar Dhaas Dhaasaa Kaa Saevaa Karee Thumaaree ||
होहु दइआल करि दासु दासा का सेवा करी तुमारी ॥
Please be kind to me, and make me the slave of Your slaves, so that I may serve You.
ਏਕੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਅਪਣਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
Eaek Nidhhaan Dhaehi Thoo Apanaa Ahinis Naam Vakhaanee ||3||
एकु निधानु देहि तू अपणा अहिनिसि नामु वखाणी ॥३॥
Please bless me with the treasure of the One Name, that I may chant it, day and night. ||3||
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
Kehath Naanak Gur Parasaadhee Boojhahu Koee Aisaa Karae Veechaaraa ||
कहत नानकु गुर परसादी बूझहु कोई ऐसा करे वीचारा ॥
Says Nanak, by Guru's Grace, understand. Hardly anyone considers this.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਊਪਰਿ ਫੇਨੁ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
Jio Jal Oopar Faen Budhabudhaa Thaisaa Eihu Sansaaraa ||
जिउ जल ऊपरि फेनु बुदबुदा तैसा इहु संसारा ॥
Like foam bubbling up on the surface of the water, so is this world.
