रंना होईआ बोधीआ पुरस होए सईआद ॥
Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.
ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੁਚ ਭੰਨੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਹਾਜੁ ॥
Seel Sanjam Such Bhannee Khaanaa Khaaj Ahaaj ||
सीलु संजमु सुच भंनी खाणा खाजु अहाजु ॥
Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.
ਸਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
Saram Gaeiaa Ghar Aapanai Path Outh Chalee Naal ||
सरमु गइआ घरि आपणै पति उठि चली नालि ॥
Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

नानक सचा एकु है अउरु न सचा भालि ॥२॥

Baahar Bhasam Laepan Karae Anthar Gubaaree ||
बाहरि भसम लेपन करे अंतरि गुबारी ॥
You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.
ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
Khinthhaa Jholee Bahu Bhaekh Karae Dhuramath Ahankaaree ||
खिंथा झोली बहु भेख करे दुरमति अहंकारी ॥
You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥
Saahib Sabadh N Oocharai Maaeiaa Moh Pasaaree ||
साहिब सबदु न ऊचरै माइआ मोह पसारी ॥
You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥
Anthar Laalach Bharam Hai Bharamai Gaavaaree ||
अंतरि लालचु भरमु है भरमै गावारी ॥
Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥
Naanak Naam N Chaethee Jooai Baajee Haaree ||14||
नानक नामु न चेतई जूऐ बाजी हारी ॥१४॥
Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||

ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਉ ॥
Lakh Sio Preeth Hovai Lakh Jeevan Kiaa Khuseeaa Kiaa Chaao ||
लख सिउ प्रीति होवै लख जीवणु किआ खुसीआ किआ चाउ ॥
You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations?
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
Vishhurriaa Vis Hoe Vishhorraa Eaek Gharree Mehi Jaae ||
विछुड़िआ विसु होइ विछोड़ा एक घड़ी महि जाइ ॥
And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant.
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
Jae So Varihaaa Mithaa Khaajai Bhee Fir Kourraa Khaae ||
जे सउ वर्हिआ मिठा खाजै भी फिरि कउड़ा खाइ ॥
You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well.
ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਧਾਇ ਜਾਇ ॥
Mithaa Khaadhhaa Chith N Aavai Kourrathan Dhhaae Jaae ||
मिठा खाधा चिति न आवै कउड़तणु धाइ जाइ ॥
Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you.
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਉੜਾ ਦੋਵੈ ਰੋਗ ॥
Mithaa Kourraa Dhovai Rog ||
मिठा कउड़ा दोवै रोग ॥
The sweet and the bitter are both diseases.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥
Naanak Anth Viguthae Bhog ||
नानक अंति विगुते भोग ॥
O Nanak, eating them, you will come to ruin in the end.
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਝਾਖ ॥
Jhakh Jhakh Jhakhanaa Jhagarraa Jhaakh ||
झखि झखि झखणा झगड़ा झाख ॥
It is useless to worry and struggle to death.
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝਖਹਿ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

झखि झखि जाहि झखहि तिन्ह पासि ॥१॥
Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1||

ਕਾਪੜੁ ਕਾਠੁ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਂਗਿ ॥
Kaaparr Kaath Rangaaeiaa Raang ||
कापड़ु काठु रंगाइआ रांगि ॥
They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors.
ਘਰ ਗਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਬਾਗ ॥
Ghar Gach Keethae Baagae Baag ||
घर गच कीते बागे बाग ॥
Their houses are painted beautifully white.
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਖੇਲਾਇਆ ॥
Saadh Sehaj Kar Man Khaelaaeiaa ||
साद सहज करि मनु खेलाइआ ॥
In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games.
ਤੈ ਸਹ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥
Thai Seh Paasahu Kehan Kehaaeiaa ||
तै सह पासहु कहणु कहाइआ ॥
When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to.
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
Mithaa Kar Kai Kourraa Khaaeiaa ||
मिठा करि कै कउड़ा खाइआ ॥
They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter.
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਉੜੈ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥
Thin Kourrai Than Rog Jamaaeiaa ||
तिनि कउड़ै तनि रोगु जमाइआ ॥
The bitter disease grows in the body.
ਜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
Jae Fir Mithaa Paerrai Paae ||
जे फिरि मिठा पेड़ै पाइ ॥
If, later on, they receive the sweet,
ਤਉ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
Tho Kourrathan Chookas Maae ||
तउ कउड़तणु चूकसि माइ ॥
Then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Naanak Guramukh Paavai Soe ||
नानक गुरमुखि पावै सोइ ॥
O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed to receive
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

जिस नो प्रापति लिखिआ होइ ॥२॥

Jin Kai Hiradhai Mail Kapatt Hai Baahar Dhhovaaeiaa ||
जिन कै हिरदै मैलु कपटु है बाहरु धोवाइआ ॥
Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
Koorr Kapatt Kamaavadhae Koorr Paragattee Aaeiaa ||
कूड़ु कपटु कमावदे कूड़ु परगटी आइआ ॥
They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਨਹ ਛਪੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥
Andhar Hoe S Nikalai Neh Shhapai Shhapaaeiaa ||
अंदरि होइ सु निकलै नह छपै छपाइआ ॥
That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment.
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Koorrai Laalach Lagiaa Fir Joonee Paaeiaa ||
कूड़ै लालचि लगिआ फिरि जूनी पाइआ ॥
Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥
Naanak Jo Beejai So Khaavanaa Karathai Likh Paaeiaa ||15||
नानक जो बीजै सो खावणा करतै लिखि पाइआ ॥१५॥
O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||

ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Kathhaa Kehaanee Baedhanaee Aanee Paap Punn Beechaar ||
कथा कहाणी बेदीं आणी पापु पुंनु बीचारु ॥
The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue.
ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੈਣਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
Dhae Dhae Lainaa Lai Lai Dhaenaa Narak Surag Avathaar ||
दे दे लैणा लै लै देणा नरकि सुरगि अवतार ॥
What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell.
ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
Outham Madhhim Jaatheen Jinasee Bharam Bhavai Sansaar ||
उतम मधिम जातीं जिनसी भरमि भवै संसारु ॥
High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਈ ॥
Anmrith Baanee Thath Vakhaanee Giaan Dhhiaan Vich Aaee ||
अम्रित बाणी ततु वखाणी गिआन धिआन विचि आई ॥
The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥
Guramukh Aakhee Guramukh Jaathee Surathanaee Karam Dhhiaaee ||
गुरमुखि आखी गुरमुखि जाती सुरतीं करमि धिआई ॥
The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
Hukam Saaj Hukamai Vich Rakhai Hukamai Andhar Vaekhai ||
हुकमु साजि हुकमै विचि रखै हुकमै अंदरि वेखै ॥
By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥
Naanak Agahu Houmai Thuttai Thaan Ko Likheeai Laekhai ||1||
नानक अगहु हउमै तुटै तां को लिखीऐ लेखै ॥१॥
O Nanak, if the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is pre-ordained, then he is approved. ||1||

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਕਾ ਬੀਉ ॥
Baedh Pukaarae Punn Paap Surag Narak Kaa Beeo ||
बेदु पुकारे पुंनु पापु सुरग नरक का बीउ ॥
The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell.
ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਉਗਵੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
Jo Beejai So Ougavai Khaandhaa Jaanai Jeeo ||
जो बीजै सो उगवै खांदा जाणै जीउ ॥
Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
Giaan Salaahae Vaddaa Kar Sacho Sachaa Naao ||
गिआनु सलाहे वडा करि सचो सचा नाउ ॥
Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name.
ਸਚੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥
Sach Beejai Sach Ougavai Dharageh Paaeeai Thhaao ||
सचु बीजै सचु उगवै दरगह पाईऐ थाउ ॥
When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor.
