Kaaeiaa Mittee Andhh Hai Pounai Pushhahu Jaae ||
काइआ मिटी अंधु है पउणै पुछहु जाइ ॥
The body is merely blind dust; go, and ask the soul.
ਹਉ ਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
Ho Thaa Maaeiaa Mohiaa Fir Fir Aavaa Jaae ||
हउ ता माइआ मोहिआ फिरि फिरि आवा जाइ ॥
The soul answers, ""I am enticed by Maya, and so I come and go, again and again.""
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਤੋ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਜਿ ਰਹਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक हुकमु न जातो खसम का जि रहा सचि समाइ ॥१॥

ਏਕੋ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
Eaeko Nihachal Naam Dhhan Hor Dhhan Aavai Jaae ||
एको निहचल नाम धनु होरु धनु आवै जाइ ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the only permanent wealth; all other wealth comes and goes.
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਨਾ ਓਚਕਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
Eis Dhhan Ko Thasakar Johi N Sakee Naa Ouchakaa Lai Jaae ||
इसु धन कउ तसकरु जोहि न सकई ना ओचका लै जाइ ॥
Thieves cannot steal this wealth, nor can robbers take it away.
ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜੀਐ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਜੀਐ ਨਾਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
Eihu Har Dhhan Jeeai Saethee Rav Rehiaa Jeeai Naalae Jaae ||
इहु हरि धनु जीऐ सेती रवि रहिआ जीऐ नाले जाइ ॥
This wealth of the Lord is embedded in the soul, and with the soul, it shall depart.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
Poorae Gur Thae Paaeeai Manamukh Palai N Paae ||
पूरे गुर ते पाईऐ मनमुखि पलै न पाइ ॥
It is obtained from the Perfect Guru; the self-willed manmukhs do not receive it.
ਧਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਆਇ ॥੨॥

धनु वापारी नानका जिन्हा नाम धनु खटिआ आइ ॥२॥

मेरा साहिबु अति वडा सचु गहिर ग्मभीरा ॥
My Master is so very great, true, profound and unfathomable.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਚੀਰਾ ॥
Sabh Jag This Kai Vas Hai Sabh This Kaa Cheeraa ||
सभु जगु तिस कै वसि है सभु तिस का चीरा ॥
The whole world is under His power; everything is the projection of Him.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥

गुर परसादी पाईऐ निहचलु धनु धीरा ॥
By Guru's Grace, the eternal wealth is obtained, bringing peace and patience to the mind.
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥
Kirapaa Thae Har Man Vasai Bhaettai Gur Sooraa ||
किरपा ते हरि मनि वसै भेटै गुरु सूरा ॥
By His Grace, the Lord dwells in the mind, and one meets the Brave Guru.
ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੭॥
Gunavanthee Saalaahiaa Sadhaa Thhir Nihachal Har Pooraa ||7||
गुणवंती सालाहिआ सदा थिरु निहचलु हरि पूरा ॥७॥

Dhhrig Thinhaa Dhaa Jeeviaa Jo Har Sukh Parehar Thiaagadhae Dhukh Houmai Paap Kamaae ||
ध्रिगु तिन्हा दा जीविआ जो हरि सुखु परहरि तिआगदे दुखु हउमै पाप कमाइ ॥
Cursed is the life of those who forsake and throw away the peace of the Lord's Name, and suffer pain instead by practicing ego and sin.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥
Manamukh Agiaanee Maaeiaa Mohi Viaapae Thinh Boojh N Kaaee Paae ||
मनमुख अगिआनी माइआ मोहि विआपे तिन्ह बूझ न काई पाइ ॥
The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in the love of Maya; they have no understanding at all.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਓਇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
Halath Palath Oue Sukh N Paavehi Anth Geae Pashhuthaae ||
हलति पलति ओइ सुखु न पावहि अंति गए पछुताइ ॥
In this world and in the world beyond, they do not find peace; in the end, they depart regretting and repenting.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Gur Parasaadhee Ko Naam Dhhiaaeae This Houmai Vichahu Jaae ||
गुर परसादी को नामु धिआए तिसु हउमै विचहु जाइ ॥
By Guru's Grace, one may meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and egotism departs from within him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਆਇ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक जिसु पूरबि होवै लिखिआ सो गुर चरणी आइ पाइ ॥१॥

मनमुखु ऊधा कउलु है ना तिसु भगति न नाउ ॥
The self-willed manmukh is like the inverted lotus; he has neither devotional worship, nor the Lord's Name.
ਸਕਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਉਪਾਉ ॥
Sakathee Andhar Varathadhaa Koorr This Kaa Hai Oupaao ||
सकती अंदरि वरतदा कूड़ु तिस का है उपाउ ॥
He remains engrossed in material wealth, and his efforts are false.
ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਮੁਖਿ ਫੀਕਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥
This Kaa Andhar Chith N Bhijee Mukh Feekaa Aalaao ||
तिस का अंदरु चितु न भिजई मुखि फीका आलाउ ॥
His consciousness is not softened within, and the words from his mouth are insipid.
ਓਇ ਧਰਮਿ ਰਲਾਏ ਨਾ ਰਲਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਓਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
Oue Dhharam Ralaaeae Naa Ralanih Ounaa Andhar Koorr Suaao ||
ओइ धरमि रलाए ना रलन्हि ओना अंदरि कूड़ु सुआउ ॥
He does not mingle with the righteous; within him are falsehood and selfishness.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੈ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
Naanak Karathai Banath Banaaee Manamukh Koorr Bol Bol Ddubae Guramukh Tharae Jap Har Naao ||2||
नानक करतै बणत बणाई मनमुख कूड़ु बोलि बोलि डुबे गुरमुखि तरे जपि हरि नाउ ॥२॥
O Nanak, the Creator Lord has arranged things, so that the self-willed manmukhs are drowned by telling lies, while the Gurmukhs are saved by chanting the Lord's Name. ||2||

बिनु बूझे वडा फेरु पइआ फिरि आवै जाई ॥
Without understanding, one must wander around the cycle of reincarnation, and continue coming and going.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨ ਕੀਤੀਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ॥
Sathigur Kee Saevaa N Keetheeaa Anth Gaeiaa Pashhuthaaee ||
सतिगुर की सेवा न कीतीआ अंति गइआ पछुताई ॥
One who has not served the True Guru, shall depart regretting and repenting in the end.
ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
Aapanee Kirapaa Karae Gur Paaeeai Vichahu Aap Gavaaee ||
आपणी किरपा करे गुरु पाईऐ विचहु आपु गवाई ॥
But if the Lord shows His Mercy, one finds the Guru, and ego is banished from within.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥
Thrisanaa Bhukh Vichahu Outharai Sukh Vasai Man Aaee ||
त्रिसना भुख विचहु उतरै सुखु वसै मनि आई ॥
Hunger and thirst depart from within, and peace comes to dwell in the mind.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੮॥
Sadhaa Sadhaa Saalaaheeai Hiradhai Liv Laaee ||8||
सदा सदा सालाहीऐ हिरदै लिव लाई ॥८॥
Forever and ever, praise Him with love in your heart. ||8||

सभना उपावा सिरि उपाउ है हरि नामु परापति होइ ॥
Of all efforts, the supreme effort is the attainment of the Lord's Name.

अंतरि सीतल साति वसै जपि हिरदै सदा सुखु होइ ॥
Peace and tranquility come to dwell within the mind; meditating within the heart, there comes a lasting peace.

अम्रितु खाणा अम्रितु पैनणा नानक नामु वडाई होइ ॥१॥
The Ambrosial Amrit is his food, and the Ambrosial Amrit is his clothes; O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, greatness is obtained. ||1||
