ਦੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਗੈ ਦੂਣੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
Dhukh Lagai Ghar Ghar Firai Agai Dhoonee Milai Sajaae ||
दुखि लगै घरि घरि फिरै अगै दूणी मिलै सजाइ ॥
Afflicted with pain, he wanders from house to house, and in the world hereafter, he receives double punishment.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਲੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
Andhar Sehaj N Aaeiou Sehajae Hee Lai Khaae ||
अंदरि सहजु न आइओ सहजे ही लै खाइ ॥
Peace does not come to his heart - he is not content to eat what comes his way.
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਲੈਣਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮਨਾਇ ॥
Manehath Jis Thae Manganaa Lainaa Dhukh Manaae ||
मनहठि जिस ते मंगणा लैणा दुखु मनाइ ॥
With his stubborn mind, he begs, and grabs, and annoys those who give.
ਇਸੁ ਭੇਖੈ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਗਿਰਹੋ ਭਲਾ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਕੋ ਵਰਸਾਇ ॥
Eis Bhaekhai Thhaavahu Gireho Bhalaa Jithhahu Ko Varasaae ||
इसु भेखै थावहु गिरहो भला जिथहु को वरसाइ ॥
Instead of wearing these beggar's robes, it is better to be a householder, and give to others.
ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
Sabadh Rathae Thinaa Sojhee Pee Dhoojai Bharam Bhulaae ||
सबदि रते तिना सोझी पई दूजै भरमि भुलाइ ॥
Those who are attuned to the Word of the Shabad, acquire understanding; the others wander, deluded by doubt.
ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Paeiai Kirath Kamaavanaa Kehanaa Kashhoo N Jaae ||
पइऐ किरति कमावणा कहणा कछू न जाइ ॥
They act according to their past actions; it is useless to talk to them.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਥਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक जो तिसु भावहि से भले जिन की पति पावहि थाइ ॥१॥

Sathigur Saeviai Sadhaa Sukh Janam Maran Dhukh Jaae ||
सतिगुरि सेविऐ सदा सुखु जनम मरण दुखु जाइ ॥
Serving the True Guru, one finds a lasting peace; the pains of birth and death are removed.
ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
Chinthaa Mool N Hovee Achinth Vasai Man Aae ||
चिंता मूलि न होवई अचिंतु वसै मनि आइ ॥
He is not troubled by anxiety, and the carefree Lord comes to dwell in the mind.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥
Anthar Theerathh Giaan Hai Sathigur Dheeaa Bujhaae ||
अंतरि तीरथु गिआनु है सतिगुरि दीआ बुझाइ ॥
Deep within himself, is the sacred shrine of spiritual wisdom, revealed by the True Guru.
ਮੈਲੁ ਗਈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
Mail Gee Man Niramal Hoaa Anmrith Sar Theerathh Naae ||
मैलु गई मनु निरमलु होआ अम्रित सरि तीरथि नाइ ॥
His filth is removed, and his soul becomes immaculately pure, bathing in the sacred shrine, the pool of Ambrosial Nectar.
ਸਜਣ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਜਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
Sajan Milae Sajanaa Sachai Sabadh Subhaae ||
सजण मिले सजणा सचै सबदि सुभाइ ॥
The friend meets with the True Friend, the Lord, through the love of the Shabad.
ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
Ghar Hee Parachaa Paaeiaa Jothee Joth Milaae ||
घर ही परचा पाइआ जोती जोति मिलाइ ॥
Within the home of his own being, he finds the Divine Self, and his light blends with the Light.
ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਈ ਲੈ ਜਾਸੀ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
Paakhandd Jamakaal N Shhoddee Lai Jaasee Path Gavaae ||
पाखंडि जमकालु न छोडई लै जासी पति गवाइ ॥
The Messenger of Death does not leave the hypocrite; he is led away in dishonor.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

Thith Jaae Behahu Sathasangathee Jithhai Har Kaa Har Naam Biloeeai ||
तितु जाइ बहहु सतसंगती जिथै हरि का हरि नामु बिलोईऐ ॥
Go, and sit in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, where the Name of the Lord is churned.
ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਖੋਈਐ ॥
Sehajae Hee Har Naam Laehu Har Thath N Khoeeai ||
सहजे ही हरि नामु लेहु हरि ततु न खोईऐ ॥
In peace and poise, contemplate the Lord's Name - don't lose the essence of the Lord.
ਨਿਤ ਜਪਿਅਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਢੋਈਐ ॥
Nith Japiahu Har Har Dhinas Raath Har Dharageh Dtoeeai ||
नित जपिअहु हरि हरि दिनसु राति हरि दरगह ढोईऐ ॥
Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, constantly, day and night, and you shall be accepted in the Court of the Lord.
ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਲਿਖੋਈਐ ॥
So Paaeae Pooraa Sathaguroo Jis Dhhur Masathak Lilaatt Likhoeeai ||
सो पाए पूरा सतगुरू जिसु धुरि मसतकि लिलाटि लिखोईऐ ॥
He alone finds the Perfect True Guru, on whose forehead such a pre-ordained destiny is written.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੰਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਲ ਗਲੋਈਐ ॥੪॥

तिसु गुर कंउ सभि नमसकारु करहु जिनि हरि की हरि गाल गलोईऐ ॥४॥

सजण मिले सजणा जिन सतगुर नालि पिआरु ॥
The friends who love the True Guru, meet with the Lord, the True Friend.
ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਤਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਸਚੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Mil Preetham Thinee Dhhiaaeiaa Sachai Praem Piaar ||
मिलि प्रीतम तिनी धिआइआ सचै प्रेमि पिआरु ॥
Meeting their Beloved, they meditate on the True Lord with love and affection.
ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਪਾਰਿ ॥
Man Hee Thae Man Maaniaa Gur Kai Sabadh Apaar ||
मन ही ते मनु मानिआ गुर कै सबदि अपारि ॥
Their minds are appeased by their own minds, through the incomparable Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਏਹਿ ਸਜਣ ਮਿਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥
Eaehi Sajan Milae N Vishhurrehi J Aap Maelae Karathaar ||
एहि सजण मिले न विछुड़हि जि आपि मेले करतारि ॥
These friends are united, and will not be separated again; they have been united by the Creator Lord Himself.
ਇਕਨਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਈਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Eikanaa Dharasan Kee Paratheeth N Aaeeaa Sabadh N Karehi Veechaar ||
इकना दरसन की परतीति न आईआ सबदि न करहि वीचारु ॥
Some do not believe in the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan; they do not contemplate the Shabad.
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਜਿਨਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Vishhurriaa Kaa Kiaa Vishhurrai Jinaa Dhoojai Bhaae Piaar ||
विछुड़िआ का किआ विछुड़ै जिना दूजै भाइ पिआरु ॥
The separated ones are in love with duality - what more separation can they suffer?
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੇਤੀ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਥੋੜੜਿਆ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
Manamukh Saethee Dhosathee Thhorrarriaa Dhin Chaar ||
मनमुख सेती दोसती थोड़ड़िआ दिन चारि ॥
Friendship with the self-willed manmukhs lasts for only a few short days.
ਇਸੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਤੁਟਦੀ ਵਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਇਤੁ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਚਲਨਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
Eis Pareethee Thuttadhee Vilam N Hovee Eith Dhosathee Chalan Vikaar ||
इसु परीती तुटदी विलमु न होवई इतु दोसती चलनि विकार ॥
This friendship is broken in an instant; this friendship leads to corruption.
ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
Jinaa Andhar Sachae Kaa Bho Naahee Naam N Karehi Piaar ||
जिना अंदरि सचे का भउ नाही नामि न करहि पिआरु ॥
They do not fear the True Lord within their hearts, and they do not love the Naam.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਚੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

नानक तिन सिउ किआ कीचै दोसती जि आपि भुलाए करतारि ॥१॥
O Nanak, why become friends with those whom the Creator Lord Himself has misled? ||1||

ਇਕਿ ਸਦਾ ਇਕਤੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
Eik Sadhaa Eikathai Rang Rehehi Thin Kai Ho Sadh Balihaarai Jaao ||
इकि सदा इकतै रंगि रहहि तिन कै हउ सद बलिहारै जाउ ॥
Some remain constantly imbued with the Lord's Love; I am forever a sacrifice to them.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਰਪੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਿਵਿ ਨਿਵਿ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥
Than Man Dhhan Arapee Thin Ko Niv Niv Laago Paae ||
तनु मनु धनु अरपी तिन कउ निवि निवि लागउ पाइ ॥
I dedicate my mind, soul and wealth to them; bowing low, I fall at their feet.
ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥
Thin Miliaa Man Santhokheeai Thrisanaa Bhukh Sabh Jaae ||
तिन मिलिआ मनु संतोखीऐ त्रिसना भुख सभ जाइ ॥
Meeting them, the soul is satisfied, and one's hunger and thirst all depart.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
