Gun Mehi Gunee Samaaeae Jis Aap Bujhaaeae Laahaa Bhagath Saisaarae ||
गुण महि गुणी समाए जिसु आपि बुझाए लाहा भगति सैसारे ॥
One's virtues merge into the virtues of the Lord; he comes to understand his own self. He earns the profit of devotional worship in this world.
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥
Bin Bhagathee Sukh N Hoee Dhoojai Path Khoee Guramath Naam Adhhaarae ||
बिनु भगती सुखु न होई दूजै पति खोई गुरमति नामु अधारे ॥
Without devotion, there is no peace; through duality, one's honor is lost, but under Guru's Instruction, he is blessed with the Support of the Naam.
ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਏਤੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ਲਾਏ ॥
Vakhar Naam Sadhaa Laabh Hai Jis No Eaeth Vaapaar Laaeae ||
वखरु नामु सदा लाभु है जिस नो एतु वापारि लाए ॥
He ever earns the profit of the merchandise of the Naam, whom the Lord employs in this Trade.
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜੀਅਹਿ ਜਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੧॥
Rathan Padhaarathh Vanajeeahi Jaan Sathigur Dhaee Bujhaaeae ||1||
रतन पदारथ वणजीअहि जां सतिगुरु देइ बुझाए ॥१॥
He purchases the jewel, the invaluable treasure, unto whom the True Guru has given this understanding. ||1||

The love of Maya is totally painful; this is a bad deal.
ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵਣੀ ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
Koorr Bol Bikh Khaavanee Bahu Vadhhehi Vikaaraa Raam ||
कूड़ु बोलि बिखु खावणी बहु वधहि विकारा राम ॥
Speaking falsehood, one eats poison, and the evil within increases greatly.
ਬਹੁ ਵਧਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
Bahu Vadhhehi Vikaaraa Sehasaa Eihu Sansaaraa Bin Naavai Path Khoee ||
बहु वधहि विकारा सहसा इहु संसारा बिनु नावै पति खोई ॥
The evil within increases greatly, in this world of doubt; without the Name, one's honor is lost.

पड़ि पड़ि पंडित वादु वखाणहि बिनु बूझे सुखु न होई ॥
Reading and studying, the religious scholars argue and debate; but without understanding, there is no peace.
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
Aavan Jaanaa Kadhae N Chookai Maaeiaa Moh Piaaraa ||
आवण जाणा कदे न चूकै माइआ मोह पिआरा ॥
Their comings and goings never end; emotional attachment to Maya is dear to them.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਖੋਟਾ ਇਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

Khottae Kharae Sabh Parakheean Thith Sachae Kai Dharabaaraa Raam ||
खोटे खरे सभि परखीअनि तितु सचे कै दरबारा राम ॥
The counterfeit and the genuine are all assayed in the Court of the True Lord.
ਖੋਟੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਨਿ ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
Khottae Dharageh Sutteean Oobhae Karan Pukaaraa Raam ||
खोटे दरगह सुटीअनि ऊभे करनि पुकारा राम ॥
The counterfeit are cast out of the Court, and they stand there, crying out in misery.
ਊਭੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
Oobhae Karan Pukaaraa Mugadhh Gavaaraa Manamukh Janam Gavaaeiaa ||
ऊभे करनि पुकारा मुगध गवारा मनमुखि जनमु गवाइआ ॥
They stand there, crying out in misery; the foolish, idiotic, self-willed manmukhs have wasted their lives.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
Bikhiaa Maaeiaa Jin Jagath Bhulaaeiaa Saachaa Naam N Bhaaeiaa ||
बिखिआ माइआ जिनि जगतु भुलाइआ साचा नामु न भाइआ ॥
Maya is the poison which has deluded the world; it does not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
Manamukh Santhaa Naal Vair Kar Dhukh Khattae Sansaaraa ||
मनमुख संता नालि वैरु करि दुखु खटे संसारा ॥
The self-willed manmukhs are resentful toward the Saints; they harvest only pain in this world.
ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥੩॥

खोटे खरे परखीअनि तितु सचै दरवारा राम ॥३॥
The counterfeit and the genuine are assayed in that True Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
Aap Karae Kis Aakheeai Hor Karanaa Kishhoo N Jaaee Raam ||
आपि करे किसु आखीऐ होरु करणा किछू न जाई राम ॥
He Himself acts; who else should I ask? No one else can do anything.
ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਸੀ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
Jith Bhaavai Thith Laaeisee Jio This Dhee Vaddiaaee Raam ||
जितु भावै तितु लाइसी जिउ तिस दी वडिआई राम ॥
As He pleases, He engages us; such is His glorious greatness.
ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਈ ਵਰੀਆਮੁ ਨ ਫੁਸੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
Jio This Dhee Vaddiaaee Aap Karaaee Vareeaam N Fusee Koee ||
जिउ तिस दी वडिआई आपि कराई वरीआमु न फुसी कोई ॥
Such is His glorious greatness - He Himself causes all to act; no one is a warrior or a coward.
ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋਈ ॥
Jagajeevan Dhaathaa Karam Bidhhaathaa Aapae Bakhasae Soee ||
जगजीवनु दाता करमि बिधाता आपे बखसे सोई ॥
The Life of the World, the Great Giver, the Architect of karma - He Himself grants forgiveness.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

गुर परसादी आपु गवाईऐ नानक नामि पति पाई ॥
By Guru's Grace, self-conceit is eradicated, O Nanak, and through the Naam, honor is obtained.

The True merchandise is the Lord's Name. This is the true trade.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਣਜੀਐ ਅਤਿ ਮੋਲੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
Guramathee Har Naam Vanajeeai Ath Mol Afaaraa Raam ||
गुरमती हरि नामु वणजीऐ अति मोलु अफारा राम ॥
Under Guru's Instruction, we trade in the Lord's Name; its value is very great.
ਅਤਿ ਮੋਲੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਸਚ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਸਚਿ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ਲਗੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
Ath Mol Afaaraa Sach Vaapaaraa Sach Vaapaar Lagae Vaddabhaagee ||
अति मोलु अफारा सच वापारा सचि वापारि लगे वडभागी ॥
The value of this true trade is very great; those who are engaged in the true trade are very fortunate.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
Anthar Baahar Bhagathee Raathae Sach Naam Liv Laagee ||
अंतरि बाहरि भगती राते सचि नामि लिव लागी ॥
Inwardly and outwardly, they are imbued with devotion, and they enshrine love for the True Name.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
Nadhar Karae Soee Sach Paaeae Gur Kai Sabadh Veechaaraa ||
नदरि करे सोई सचु पाए गुर कै सबदि वीचारा ॥
One who is blessed with the Lord's Favor, obtains Truth, and reflects upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੈ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

हंउमै माइआ मैलु है माइआ मैलु भरीजै राम ॥
Egotistical involvement in Maya is filth; Maya is overflowing with filth.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
Guramathee Man Niramalaa Rasanaa Har Ras Peejai Raam ||
गुरमती मनु निरमला रसना हरि रसु पीजै राम ॥
Under Guru's Instruction, the mind is made pure and the tongue tastes the subtle essence of the Lord.
ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
Rasanaa Har Ras Peejai Anthar Bheejai Saach Sabadh Beechaaree ||
रसना हरि रसु पीजै अंतरु भीजै साच सबदि बीचारी ॥
The tongue tastes the subtle essence of the Lord, and deep within, the heart is drenched with His Love, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਖੂਹਟਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਸਬਦੇ ਕਾਢਿ ਪੀਐ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
Anthar Khoohattaa Anmrith Bhariaa Sabadhae Kaadt Peeai Panihaaree ||
अंतरि खूहटा अम्रिति भरिआ सबदे काढि पीऐ पनिहारी ॥
Deep within, the well of the heart is overflowing with the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar; the water-carrier draws and drinks in the water of the Shabad.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥

जिसु नदरि करे सोई सचि लागै रसना रामु रवीजै ॥
One who is blessed with the Lord's favor is attuned to the Truth; with his tongue, he chants the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥੨॥

नानक नामि रते से निरमल होर हउमै मैलु भरीजै ॥२॥
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are immaculate. The others are full of the filth of egotism. ||2||
