अनत तरंग भगति हरि रंगा ॥
Loving devotion to the Lord brings endless waves of joy and delight.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੂਚੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗਾ ॥
Anadhin Soochae Har Gun Sangaa ||
अनदिनु सूचे हरि गुण संगा ॥
One who dwells with the Glorious Praises of the Lord, night and day, is sanctified.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
Mithhiaa Janam Saakath Sansaaraa ||
मिथिआ जनमु साकत संसारा ॥
The birth into the world of the faithless cynic is totally useless.
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
Raam Bhagath Jan Rehai Niraaraa ||2||
राम भगति जनु रहै निरारा ॥२॥
The humble devotee of the Lord remains unattached. ||2||
ਸੂਚੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥
Soochee Kaaeiaa Har Gun Gaaeiaa ||
सूची काइआ हरि गुण गाइआ ॥
The body which sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord is sanctified.
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
Aatham Cheen Rehai Liv Laaeiaa ||
आतमु चीनि रहै लिव लाइआ ॥
The soul remains conscious of the Lord, absorbed in His Love.
ਆਦਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
Aadh Apaar Aparanpar Heeraa ||
आदि अपारु अपर्मपरु हीरा ॥
The Lord is the Infinite Primal Being, beyond the beyond, the priceless jewel.
ਲਾਲਿ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੩॥
Laal Rathaa Maeraa Man Dhheeraa ||3||
लालि रता मेरा मनु धीरा ॥३॥
My mind is totally content, imbued with my Beloved. ||3||
ਕਥਨੀ ਕਹਹਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਮੂਏ ॥
Kathhanee Kehehi Kehehi Sae Mooeae ||
कथनी कहहि कहहि से मूए ॥
Those who speak and babble on and on, are truly dead.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੈ ॥
So Prabh Dhoor Naahee Prabh Thoon Hai ||
सो प्रभु दूरि नाही प्रभु तूं है ॥
God is not far away - O God, You are right here.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
Sabh Jag Dhaekhiaa Maaeiaa Shhaaeiaa ||
सभु जगु देखिआ माइआ छाइआ ॥
I have seen that the whole world is engrossed in Maya.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੭॥

नानक गुरमति नामु धिआइआ ॥४॥१७॥
O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||17||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕਾ ॥
Aasaa Mehalaa 1 Thithukaa ||
आसा महला १ तितुका ॥
Aasaa, First Mehl, Ti-Tukas:
ਕੋਈ ਭੀਖਕੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥
Koee Bheekhak Bheekhiaa Khaae ||
कोई भीखकु भीखिआ खाइ ॥
One is a beggar, living on charity;
ਕੋਈ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
Koee Raajaa Rehiaa Samaae ||
कोई राजा रहिआ समाइ ॥
Another is a king, absorbed in himself.
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਅਪਮਾਨੁ ॥
Kis Hee Maan Kisai Apamaan ||
किस ही मानु किसै अपमानु ॥
One receives honor, and another dishonor.
ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਧਰੇ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
Dtaahi Ousaarae Dhharae Dhhiaan ||
ढाहि उसारे धरे धिआनु ॥
The Lord destroys and creates; He is enshrined in His meditation.
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਵਡਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
Thujh Thae Vaddaa Naahee Koe ||
तुझ ते वडा नाही कोइ ॥
There is no other as great as You.
ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾਲੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
Kis Vaekhaalee Changaa Hoe ||1||
किसु वेखाली चंगा होइ ॥१॥
So whom should I present to You? Who is good enough? ||1||
ਮੈ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
Mai Thaan Naam Thaeraa Aadhhaar ||
मै तां नामु तेरा आधारु ॥
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is my only Support.
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तूं दाता करणहारु करतारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
You are the Great Giver, the Doer, the Creator. ||1||Pause||
ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵਉ ਵੀਗਾ ਜਾਉ ॥
Vaatt N Paavo Veegaa Jaao ||
वाट न पावउ वीगा जाउ ॥
I have not walked on Your Path; I have followed the crooked path.
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥
Dharageh Baisan Naahee Thhaao ||
दरगह बैसण नाही थाउ ॥
In the Court of the Lord, I find no place to sit.
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
Man Kaa Andhhulaa Maaeiaa Kaa Bandhh ||
मन का अंधुला माइआ का बंधु ॥
I am mentally blind, in the bondage of Maya.
ਖੀਨ ਖਰਾਬੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਕੰਧੁ ॥
Kheen Kharaab Hovai Nith Kandhh ||
खीन खराबु होवै नित कंधु ॥
The wall of my body is breaking down, wearing away, growing weaker.
ਖਾਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸ ॥
Khaan Jeevan Kee Bahuthee Aas ||
खाण जीवण की बहुती आस ॥
You have such high hopes of eating and living
ਲੇਖੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ॥੨॥
Laekhai Thaerai Saas Giraas ||2||
लेखै तेरै सास गिरास ॥२॥
- your breaths and morsels of food are already counted! ||2||
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਦੇਇ ॥
Ahinis Andhhulae Dheepak Dhaee ||
अहिनिसि अंधुले दीपकु देइ ॥
Night and day they are blind - please, bless them with Your Light.
ਭਉਜਲ ਡੂਬਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Bhoujal Ddoobath Chinth Karaee ||
भउजल डूबत चिंत करेइ ॥
They are drowning in the terrifying world-ocean, crying out in pain.
ਕਹਹਿ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥
Kehehi Sunehi Jo Maanehi Naao ||
कहहि सुणहि जो मानहि नाउ ॥
I am a sacrifice to those who chant,
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
Ho Balihaarai Thaa Kai Jaao ||
हउ बलिहारै ता कै जाउ ॥
Hear and believe in the Name.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
Naanak Eaek Kehai Aradhaas ||
नानकु एक कहै अरदासि ॥
Nanak utters this one prayer;
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
Jeeo Pindd Sabh Thaerai Paas ||3||
जीउ पिंडु सभु तेरै पासि ॥३॥
Soul and body, all belong to You, Lord. ||3||
ਜਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਪੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
Jaan Thoon Dhaehi Japee Thaeraa Naao ||
जां तूं देहि जपी तेरा नाउ ॥
When You bless me, I chant Your Name.
ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥
Dharageh Baisan Hovai Thhaao ||
दरगह बैसण होवै थाउ ॥
Thus I find my seat in the Court of the Lord.
ਜਾਂ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jaan Thudhh Bhaavai Thaa Dhuramath Jaae ||
जां तुधु भावै ता दुरमति जाइ ॥
When it pleases You, evil-mindedness departs,
ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥
Giaan Rathan Man Vasai Aae ||
गिआन रतनु मनि वसै आइ ॥
And the jewel of spiritual wisdom comes to dwell in the mind.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
Nadhar Karae Thaa Sathigur Milai ||
नदरि करे ता सतिगुरु मिलै ॥
When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then one comes to meet the True Guru.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ॥੪॥੧੮॥
Pranavath Naanak Bhavajal Tharai ||4||18||
प्रणवति नानकु भवजलु तरै ॥४॥१८॥
Prays Nanak, carry us across the terrifying world-ocean. ||4||18||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪੰਚਪਦੇ ॥

आसा महला १ पंचपदे ॥
Aasaa, First Mehl, Panch-Padas:
ਦੁਧ ਬਿਨੁ ਧੇਨੁ ਪੰਖ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਕਾਮਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Dhudhh Bin Dhhaen Pankh Bin Pankhee Jal Bin Outhabhuj Kaam Naahee ||
दुध बिनु धेनु पंख बिनु पंखी जल बिनु उतभुज कामि नाही ॥
A cow without milk; a bird without wings; a garden without water - totally useless!
ਕਿਆ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਸਲਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਕੋਠੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥
Kiaa Sulathaan Salaam Vihoonaa Andhhee Kothee Thaeraa Naam Naahee ||1||
किआ सुलतानु सलाम विहूणा अंधी कोठी तेरा नामु नाही ॥१॥
What is an emperor, without respect? The chamber of the soul is so dark, without the Name of the Lord. ||1||
ਕੀ ਵਿਸਰਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Kee Visarehi Dhukh Bahuthaa Laagai ||
की विसरहि दुखु बहुता लागै ॥
How could I ever forget You? It would be so painful!
ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਸਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Dhukh Laagai Thoon Visar Naahee ||1|| Rehaao ||
दुखु लागै तूं विसरु नाही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
I would suffer such pain - no, I shall not forget You! ||1||Pause||
ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੰਨੀ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਵਾਜੈ ॥
Akhee Andhh Jeebh Ras Naahee Kannee Pavan N Vaajai ||
अखी अंधु जीभ रसु नाही कंनी पवणु न वाजै ॥
The eyes grow blind, the tongue does not taste, and the ears do not hear any sound.
ਚਰਣੀ ਚਲੈ ਪਜੂਤਾ ਆਗੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੨॥
Charanee Chalai Pajoothaa Aagai Vin Saevaa Fal Laagae ||2||
चरणी चलै पजूता आगै विणु सेवा फल लागे ॥२॥
He walks on his feet only when supported by someone else; without serving the Lord, such are the fruits of life. ||2||
ਅਖਰ ਬਿਰਖ ਬਾਗ ਭੁਇ ਚੋਖੀ ਸਿੰਚਿਤ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇਹੀ ॥
Akhar Birakh Baag Bhue Chokhee Sinchith Bhaao Karaehee ||
अखर बिरख बाग भुइ चोखी सिंचित भाउ करेही ॥
The Word is the tree; the garden of the heart is the farm; tend it, and irrigate it with the Lord's Love.
ਸਭਨਾ ਫਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਲੇਹੀ ॥੩॥
Sabhanaa Fal Laagai Naam Eaeko Bin Karamaa Kaisae Laehee ||3||
सभना फलु लागै नामु एको बिनु करमा कैसे लेही ॥३॥
All these trees bear the fruit of the Name of the One Lord; but without the karma of good actions, how can anyone obtain it? ||3||
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਫਲੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Jaethae Jeea Thaethae Sabh Thaerae Vin Saevaa Fal Kisai Naahee ||
जेते जीअ तेते सभि तेरे विणु सेवा फलु किसै नाही ॥
As many living beings are there are, they are all Yours. Without selfless service, no one obtains any reward.
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਰਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੪॥
Dhukh Sukh Bhaanaa Thaeraa Hovai Vin Naavai Jeeo Rehai Naahee ||4||
दुखु सुखु भाणा तेरा होवै विणु नावै जीउ रहै नाही ॥४॥
Pain and pleasure come by Your Will; without the Name, the soul does not even exist. ||4||
ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੈਸਾ ਜਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਤਾਂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
Math Vich Maran Jeevan Hor Kaisaa Jaa Jeevaa Thaan Jugath Naahee ||
मति विचि मरणु जीवणु होरु कैसा जा जीवा तां जुगति नाही ॥
To die in the Teachings is to live. Otherwise, what is life? That is not the way.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਜੀਆ ਜਹ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਹ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੫॥੧੯॥
Kehai Naanak Jeevaalae Jeeaa Jeh Bhaavai Theh Raakh Thuhee ||5||19||
कहै नानकु जीवाले जीआ जह भावै तह राखु तुही ॥५॥१९॥
Says Nanak, He grants life to the living beings; O Lord, please keep me according to Your Will. ||5||19||
