आसा महला १ ॥
Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਕਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੈ ਧੋਤੀ ॥
Kaaeiaa Brehamaa Man Hai Dhhothee ||
काइआ ब्रहमा मनु है धोती ॥
Let the body be the Brahmin, and let the mind be the loin-cloth;
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਸਪਾਤੀ ॥
Giaan Janaeoo Dhhiaan Kusapaathee ||
गिआनु जनेऊ धिआनु कुसपाती ॥
Let spiritual wisdom be the sacred thread, and meditation the ceremonial ring.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਸੁ ਜਾਚਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
Har Naamaa Jas Jaacho Naao ||
हरि नामा जसु जाचउ नाउ ॥
I seek the Name of the Lord and His Praise as my cleansing bath.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੧॥
Gur Parasaadhee Breham Samaao ||1||
गुर परसादी ब्रहमि समाउ ॥१॥
By Guru's Grace, I am absorbed into God. ||1||
ਪਾਂਡੇ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
Paanddae Aisaa Breham Beechaar ||
पांडे ऐसा ब्रहम बीचारु ॥
O Pandit, O religious scholar, contemplate God in such a way
ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਚਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਪੜਉ ਨਾਮੇ ਚਜੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Naamae Such Naamo Parro Naamae Chaj Aachaar ||1|| Rehaao ||
नामे सुचि नामो पड़उ नामे चजु आचारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
That His Name may sanctify you, that His Name may be your study, and His Name your wisdom and way of life. ||1||Pause||
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨੇਊ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
Baahar Janaeoo Jichar Joth Hai Naal ||
बाहरि जनेऊ जिचरु जोति है नालि ॥
The outer sacred thread is worthwhile only as long as the Divine Light is within.
ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Dhhothee Ttikaa Naam Samaal ||
धोती टिका नामु समालि ॥
So make the remembrance of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, your loin-cloth and the ceremonial mark on your forehead.
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
Aithhai Outhhai Nibehee Naal ||
ऐथै ओथै निबही नालि ॥
Here and hereafter, the Name alone shall stand by you.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
Vin Naavai Hor Karam N Bhaal ||2||
विणु नावै होरि करम न भालि ॥२॥
Do not seek any other actions, except the Name. ||2||
ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਰਜਾਲਿ ॥
Poojaa Praem Maaeiaa Parajaal ||
पूजा प्रेम माइआ परजालि ॥
Worship the Lord in loving adoration, and burn your desire for Maya.
ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
Eaeko Vaekhahu Avar N Bhaal ||
एको वेखहु अवरु न भालि ॥
Behold only the One Lord, and do not seek out any other.
ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਗਨ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
Cheenhai Thath Gagan Dhas Dhuaar ||
चीन्है ततु गगन दस दुआर ॥
Become aware of reality, in the Sky of the Tenth Gate;
ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥
Har Mukh Paath Parrai Beechaar ||3||
हरि मुखि पाठ पड़ै बीचार ॥३॥
Read aloud the Lord's Word, and contemplate it. ||3||
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
Bhojan Bhaao Bharam Bho Bhaagai ||
भोजनु भाउ भरमु भउ भागै ॥
With the diet of His Love, doubt and fear depart.
ਪਾਹਰੂਅਰਾ ਛਬਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
Paaharooaraa Shhab Chor N Laagai ||
पाहरूअरा छबि चोरु न लागै ॥
With the Lord as your night watchman, no thief will dare to break in.
ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ॥
Thilak Lilaatt Jaanai Prabh Eaek ||
तिलकु लिलाटि जाणै प्रभु एकु ॥
Let the knowledge of the One God be the ceremonial mark on your forehead.
ਬੂਝੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ॥੪॥
Boojhai Breham Anthar Bibaek ||4||
बूझै ब्रहमु अंतरि बिबेकु ॥४॥
Let the realization that God is within you be your discrimination. ||4||
ਆਚਾਰੀ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
Aachaaree Nehee Jeethiaa Jaae ||
आचारी नही जीतिआ जाइ ॥
Through ritual actions, God cannot be won over;
ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
Paath Parrai Nehee Keemath Paae ||
पाठ पड़ै नही कीमति पाइ ॥
By reciting sacred scriptures, His value cannot be estimated.
ਅਸਟ ਦਸੀ ਚਹੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
Asatt Dhasee Chahu Bhaedh N Paaeiaa ||
असट दसी चहु भेदु न पाइआ ॥
The eighteen Puraanas and the four Vedas do not know His mystery.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੨੦॥
Naanak Sathigur Breham Dhikhaaeiaa ||5||20||
नानक सतिगुरि ब्रहमु दिखाइआ ॥५॥२०॥
O Nanak, the True Guru has shown me the Lord God. ||5||20||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
Saevak Dhaas Bhagath Jan Soee ||
सेवकु दासु भगतु जनु सोई ॥
He alone is the selfless servant, slave and humble devotee,
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
Thaakur Kaa Dhaas Guramukh Hoee ||
ठाकुर का दासु गुरमुखि होई ॥
Who as Gurmukh, becomes the slave of his Lord and Master.
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
Jin Sir Saajee Thin Fun Goee ||
जिनि सिरि साजी तिनि फुनि गोई ॥
He, who created the Universe, shall ultimately destroy it.
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
This Bin Dhoojaa Avar N Koee ||1||
तिसु बिनु दूजा अवरु न कोई ॥१॥
Without Him, there is no other at all. ||1||
ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
Saach Naam Gur Sabadh Veechaar ||
साचु नामु गुर सबदि वीचारि ॥
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Gurmukh reflects upon the True Name;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Guramukh Saachae Saachai Dharabaar ||1|| Rehaao ||
गुरमुखि साचे साचै दरबारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
In the True Court, he is found to be true. ||1||Pause||
ਸਚਾ ਅਰਜੁ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
Sachaa Araj Sachee Aradhaas ||
सचा अरजु सची अरदासि ॥
The true supplication, the true prayer
ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
Mehalee Khasam Sunae Saabaas ||
महली खसमु सुणे साबासि ॥
- within the Mansion of His Sublime Presence, the True Lord Master hears and applauds these.
ਸਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
Sachai Thakhath Bulaavai Soe ||
सचै तखति बुलावै सोइ ॥
He summons the truthful to His Heavenly Throne
ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
Dhae Vaddiaaee Karae S Hoe ||2||
दे वडिआई करे सु होइ ॥२॥
And bestows glorious greatness upon them; that which He wills, comes to pass. ||2||
ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
Thaeraa Thaan Thoohai Dheebaan ||
तेरा ताणु तूहै दीबाणु ॥
The Power is Yours; You are my only Support.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
Gur Kaa Sabadh Sach Neesaan ||
गुर का सबदु सचु नीसाणु ॥
The Word of the Guru's Shabad is my true password.
ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
Mannae Hukam S Paragatt Jaae ||
मंने हुकमु सु परगटु जाइ ॥
One who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, goes to Him openly.
ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
Sach Neesaanai Thaak N Paae ||3||
सचु नीसाणै ठाक न पाइ ॥३॥
With the password of truth, his way is not blocked. ||3||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਵੇਦੁ ॥
Panddith Parrehi Vakhaanehi Vaedh ||
पंडित पड़हि वखाणहि वेदु ॥
The Pandit reads and expounds on the Vedas,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਦੁ ॥
Anthar Vasath N Jaanehi Bhaedh ||
अंतरि वसतु न जाणहि भेदु ॥
But he does not know the secret of the thing within himself.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Gur Bin Sojhee Boojh N Hoe ||
गुर बिनु सोझी बूझ न होइ ॥
Without the Guru, understanding and realization are not obtained;
ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
Saachaa Rav Rehiaa Prabh Soe ||4||
साचा रवि रहिआ प्रभु सोइ ॥४॥
But still God is True, pervading everywhere. ||4||
ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਆਖਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
Kiaa Ho Aakhaa Aakh Vakhaanee ||
किआ हउ आखा आखि वखाणी ॥
What should I say, or speak or describe?
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
Thoon Aapae Jaanehi Sarab Viddaanee ||
तूं आपे जाणहि सरब विडाणी ॥
Only You Yourself know, O Lord of total wonder.
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
Naanak Eaeko Dhar Dheebaan ||
नानक एको दरु दीबाणु ॥
Nanak takes the Support of the Door of the One God.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਹਾ ਗੁਦਰਾਣੁ ॥੫॥੨੧॥
Guramukh Saach Thehaa Gudharaan ||5||21||
गुरमुखि साचु तहा गुदराणु ॥५॥२१॥
There, at the True Door, the Gurmukhs sustain themselves. ||5||21||

ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
Kaachee Gaagar Dhaeh Dhuhaelee Oupajai Binasai Dhukh Paaee ||
काची गागरि देह दुहेली उपजै बिनसै दुखु पाई ॥
The clay pitcher of the body is miserable; it suffers in pain through birth and death.
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
Eihu Jag Saagar Dhuthar Kio Thareeai Bin Har Gur Paar N Paaee ||1||
इहु जगु सागरु दुतरु किउ तरीऐ बिनु हरि गुर पारि न पाई ॥१॥
How can this terrifying world-ocean be crossed over? Without the Lord - Guru, it cannot be crossed. ||1||
ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਰੇ ॥
Thujh Bin Avar N Koee Maerae Piaarae Thujh Bin Avar N Koe Harae ||
तुझ बिनु अवरु न कोई मेरे पिआरे तुझ बिनु अवरु न कोइ हरे ॥
Without You, there is no other at all, O my Beloved; without you, there is no other at all.
ਸਰਬੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਰੂਪੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Sarabee Rangee Roopee Thoonhai This Bakhasae Jis Nadhar Karae ||1|| Rehaao ||
सरबी रंगी रूपी तूंहै तिसु बखसे जिसु नदरि करे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
You are in all colors and forms; he alone is forgiven, upon whom You bestow Your Glance of Grace. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਸੁ ਬੁਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਪਿਰ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਣ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਰੀ ॥
Saas Buree Ghar Vaas N Dhaevai Pir Sio Milan N Dhaee Buree ||
सासु बुरी घरि वासु न देवै पिर सिउ मिलण न देइ बुरी ॥
Maya, my mother-in-law, is evil; she does not let me live in my own home. The vicious one does not let me meet with my Husband Lord.
ਸਖੀ ਸਾਜਨੀ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਧਰੀ ॥੨॥
Sakhee Saajanee Kae Ho Charan Saraevo Har Gur Kirapaa Thae Nadhar Dhharee ||2||
सखी साजनी के हउ चरन सरेवउ हरि गुर किरपा ते नदरि धरी ॥२॥
I serve at the feet of my companions and friends; the Lord has showered me with His Mercy, through Guru's Grace. ||2||
ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤੁਮ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
Aap Beechaar Maar Man Dhaekhiaa Thum Saa Meeth N Avar Koee ||
आपु बीचारि मारि मनु देखिआ तुम सा मीतु न अवरु कोई ॥
Reflecting upon my self, and conquering my mind, I have seen that there is no other friend like You.
