ਖਸਮ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
Khasam Pashhaanai So Dhin Paravaan ||2||
खसम पछाणै सो दिनु परवाणु ॥२॥
That day alone would be auspicious, when he recognizes his Lord and Master. ||2||
ਦਰਸਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦਇਆ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
Dharasan Dhaekhiai Dhaeiaa N Hoe ||
दरसनि देखिऐ दइआ न होइ ॥
Beholding the sight of the petitioner, compassion is not aroused.
ਲਏ ਦਿਤੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
Leae Dhithae Vin Rehai N Koe ||
लए दिते विणु रहै न कोइ ॥
No one lives without give and take.
ਰਾਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਹਥਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
Raajaa Niaao Karae Hathh Hoe ||
राजा निआउ करे हथि होइ ॥
The king administers justice only if his palm is greased.
ਕਹੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥
Kehai Khudhaae N Maanai Koe ||3||
कहै खुदाइ न मानै कोइ ॥३॥
No one is moved by the Name of God. ||3||
ਮਾਣਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
Maanas Moorath Naanak Naam ||
माणस मूरति नानकु नामु ॥
O Nanak, they are human beings in form and name only;
ਕਰਣੀ ਕੁਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ॥
Karanee Kuthaa Dhar Furamaan ||
करणी कुता दरि फुरमानु ॥
By their deeds they are dogs - this is the Command of the Lord's Court.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥
Gur Parasaadh Jaanai Mihamaan ||
गुर परसादि जाणै मिहमानु ॥
By Guru's Grace, if one sees himself as a guest in this world,
ਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੪॥
Thaa Kishh Dharageh Paavai Maan ||4||4||
ता किछु दरगह पावै मानु ॥४॥४॥
Then he gains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||4||4||

Jaethaa Sabadh Surath Dhhun Thaethee Jaethaa Roop Kaaeiaa Thaeree ||
जेता सबदु सुरति धुनि तेती जेता रूपु काइआ तेरी ॥
As much as the Shabad is in the mind, so much is Your melody; as much as the form of the universe is, so much is Your body, Lord.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਰਸਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਸਨਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਹਉ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

तूं आपे रसना आपे बसना अवरु न दूजा कहउ माई ॥१॥
You Yourself are the tongue, and You Yourself are the nose. Do not speak of any other, O my mother. ||1||

आपे मारे आपे छोडै आपे लेवै देइ ॥
He Himself kills, and He Himself emancipates; He Himself gives and takes.
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੨॥
Aapae Vaekhai Aapae Vigasai Aapae Nadhar Karaee ||2||
आपे वेखै आपे विगसै आपे नदरि करेइ ॥२॥
He Himself beholds, and He Himself rejoices; He Himself bestows His Glance of Grace. ||2||
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
Jo Kishh Karanaa So Kar Rehiaa Avar N Karanaa Jaaee ||
जो किछु करणा सो करि रहिआ अवरु न करणा जाई ॥
Whatever He is to do, that is what He is doing. No one else can do anything.
ਜੈਸਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੩॥
Jaisaa Varathai Thaiso Keheeai Sabh Thaeree Vaddiaaee ||3||
जैसा वरतै तैसो कहीऐ सभ तेरी वडिआई ॥३॥
As He projects Himself, so do we describe Him; this is all Your Glorious Greatness, Lord. ||3||
ਕਲਿ ਕਲਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਪੀਵਤੁ ਰਹੈ ॥
Kal Kalavaalee Maaeiaa Madh Meethaa Man Mathavaalaa Peevath Rehai ||
कलि कलवाली माइआ मदु मीठा मनु मतवाला पीवतु रहै ॥
The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the bottle of wine; Maya is the sweet wine, and the intoxicated mind continues to drink it in.
ਆਪੇ ਰੂਪ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤੀਂ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਏਵ ਕਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥

आपे रूप करे बहु भांतीं नानकु बपुड़ा एव कहै ॥४॥५॥
He Himself assumes all sorts of forms; thus poor Nanak speaks. ||4||5||

Make your intellect your instrument, and love your tambourine;
ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥
Hoe Anandh Sadhaa Man Chaao ||
होइ अनंदु सदा मनि चाउ ॥
Thus bliss and lasting pleasure shall be produced in your mind.
ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਏਹੋ ਤਪ ਤਾਉ ॥
Eaehaa Bhagath Eaeho Thap Thaao ||
एहा भगति एहो तप ताउ ॥
This is devotional worship, and this is the practice of penance.

पूरे ताल जाणै सालाह ॥
Know that the perfect beat is the Praise of the Lord;

सतु संतोखु वजहि दुइ ताल ॥

Pairee Vaajaa Sadhaa Nihaal ||
पैरी वाजा सदा निहाल ॥
Let your ankle bells be the lasting Vision of the Lord.
ਰਾਗੁ ਨਾਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
Raag Naadh Nehee Dhoojaa Bhaao ||
रागु नादु नही दूजा भाउ ॥
Let your harmony and music be the elimination of duality.

भउ फेरी होवै मन चीति ॥
Let the fear of God within your heart and mind be your spinning dance,
ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤਿ ॥
Behadhiaa Outhadhiaa Neethaa Neeth ||
बहदिआ उठदिआ नीता नीति ॥
And keep up, whether sitting or standing.
ਲੇਟਣਿ ਲੇਟਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਤਨੁ ਸੁਆਹੁ ॥
Laettan Laett Jaanai Than Suaahu ||
लेटणि लेटि जाणै तनु सुआहु ॥
To roll around in the dust is to know that the body is only ashes.

Keep the company of the disciples, the students who love the teachings.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਣਣਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
Guramukh Sunanaa Saachaa Naao ||
गुरमुखि सुणणा साचा नाउ ॥
As Gurmukh, listen to the True Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਰਾ ਵੇਰ ॥

ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਦਹਸਿਰਿ ਮੂੰਡੁ ਕਟਾਇਆ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਵਡਾ ਭਇਆ ॥੧॥
Andhhulai Dhehasir Moondd Kattaaeiaa Raavan Maar Kiaa Vaddaa Bhaeiaa ||1||
अंधुलै दहसिरि मूंडु कटाइआ रावणु मारि किआ वडा भइआ ॥१॥
The blind, ten-headed Raavan had his heads cut off, but what greatness was obtained by killing him? ||1||

जीअ उपाइ जुगति हथि कीनी काली नथि किआ वडा भइआ ॥
You created all beings, and You hold the world in Your Hands; what greatness is it to put a ring in the nose of the black cobra, as Krishna did?
ਕਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜੋਰੂ ਕਉਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੨॥

किसु तूं पुरखु जोरू कउण कहीऐ सरब निरंतरि रवि रहिआ ॥२॥
Whose Husband are You? Who is Your wife? You are subtly diffused and pervading in all. ||2||
ਨਾਲਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਵਰਦਾਤਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਭਾਲਣ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਗਇਆ ॥
Naal Kuttanb Saathh Varadhaathaa Brehamaa Bhaalan Srisatt Gaeiaa ||
नालि कुट्मबु साथि वरदाता ब्रहमा भालण स्रिसटि गइआ ॥
Brahma, the bestower of blessings, entered the stem of the lotus, with his relatives, to find the extent of the universe.
ਆਗੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕੰਸੁ ਛੇਦਿ ਕਿਆ ਵਡਾ ਭਇਆ ॥੩॥
Aagai Anth N Paaeiou Thaa Kaa Kans Shhaedh Kiaa Vaddaa Bhaeiaa ||3||
आगै अंतु न पाइओ ता का कंसु छेदि किआ वडा भइआ ॥३॥
Proceeding on, he could not find its limits; what glory was obtained by killing Kansa, the king? ||3||
ਰਤਨ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੇ ਖੀਰੁ ਮਥਿਆ ਹੋਰਿ ਭਖਲਾਏ ਜਿ ਅਸੀ ਕੀਆ ॥
Rathan Oupaae Dhharae Kheer Mathhiaa Hor Bhakhalaaeae J Asee Keeaa ||
रतन उपाइ धरे खीरु मथिआ होरि भखलाए जि असी कीआ ॥
The jewels were produced and brought forth by churning the ocean of milk. The other gods proclaimed ""We are the ones who did this!""
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਛਪੈ ਕਿਉ ਛਪਿਆ ਏਕੀ ਏਕੀ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੀਆ ॥੪॥੭॥
Kehai Naanak Shhapai Kio Shhapiaa Eaekee Eaekee Vandd Dheeaa ||4||7||
कहै नानकु छपै किउ छपिआ एकी एकी वंडि दीआ ॥४॥७॥
Says Nanak, by hiding, how can the Lord be hidden? He has given each their share, one by one. ||4||7||
