सलोक मः ५ ॥
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਹਦੇ ਖੁਹਦੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਾਰਿਅਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਹਰੁ ॥
Rehadhae Khuhadhae Nindhak Maarian Kar Aapae Aahar ||
रहदे खुहदे निंदक मारिअनु करि आपे आहरु ॥
By their own efforts, the slanderers have destroyed all remnants of themselves.
ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਹਰੁ ॥੧॥
Santh Sehaaee Naanakaa Varathai Sabh Jaahar ||1||
संत सहाई नानका वरतै सभ जाहरु ॥१॥
The Support of the Saints, O Nanak, is manifest, pervading everywhere. ||1||

मः ५ ॥
Fifth Mehl:
ਮੁੰਢਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਮੁੰਢ ਤੇ ਕਿਥੈ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਹਥੁ ॥
Mundtahu Bhulae Mundt Thae Kithhai Paaein Hathh ||
मुंढहु भुले मुंढ ते किथै पाइनि हथु ॥
Those who went astray from the Primal Being in the very beginning - where can they find refuge?
ਤਿੰਨੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥੨॥
Thinnai Maarae Naanakaa J Karan Kaaran Samarathh ||2||
तिंनै मारे नानका जि करण कारण समरथु ॥२॥
O Nanak, they are struck down by the All-powerful, the Cause of causes. ||2||

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਲੈ ਫਾਹੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੁਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
Lai Faahae Raathee Thurehi Prabh Jaanai Praanee ||
लै फाहे राती तुरहि प्रभु जाणै प्राणी ॥
They take the noose in their hands, and go out at night to strangle others, but God knows everything, O mortal.
ਤਕਹਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਈਆ ਲੁਕਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਠਾਣੀ ॥
Thakehi Naar Paraaeeaa Luk Andhar Thaanee ||
तकहि नारि पराईआ लुकि अंदरि ठाणी ॥
They spy on other men's women, concealed in their hiding places.
ਸੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਦੇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਵਿਖੰਮ ਥਾਇ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਦੁ ਮਾਣੀ ॥
Sannhee Dhaenih Vikhanm Thhaae Mithaa Madh Maanee ||
संन्ही देन्हि विखम थाइ मिठा मदु माणी ॥
They break into well-protected places, and revel in sweet wine.
ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥
Karamee Aapo Aapanee Aapae Pashhuthaanee ||
करमी आपो आपणी आपे पछुताणी ॥
But they shall come to regret their actions - they create their own karma.
ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀ ॥੨੭॥
Ajaraaeel Faraesathaa Thil Peerrae Ghaanee ||27||
अजराईलु फरेसता तिल पीड़े घाणी ॥२७॥
Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall crush them like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||27||

सलोक मः ५ ॥
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਸੇਵਕ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਸੇਈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
Saevak Sachae Saah Kae Saeee Paravaan ||
सेवक सचे साह के सेई परवाणु ॥
The servants of the True King are acceptable and approved.
ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੇ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਜਾਣ ॥੧॥
Dhoojaa Saevan Naanakaa Sae Pach Pach Mueae Ajaan ||1||
दूजा सेवनि नानका से पचि पचि मुए अजाण ॥१॥
Those ignorant ones who serve duality, O Nanak, rot, waste away and die. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Jo Dhhur Likhiaa Laekh Prabh Maettanaa N Jaae ||
जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु प्रभ मेटणा न जाइ ॥
That destiny which was pre-ordained by God from the very beginning cannot be erased.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਖਰੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੨॥
Raam Naam Dhhan Vakharo Naanak Sadhaa Dhhiaae ||2||
राम नामु धनु वखरो नानक सदा धिआइ ॥२॥
The wealth of the Lord's Name is Nanak's capital; he meditates on it forever. ||2||

ਨਾਰਾਇਣਿ ਲਇਆ ਨਾਠੂੰਗੜਾ ਪੈਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਰਖੈ ॥
Naaraaein Laeiaa Naathoongarraa Pair Kithhai Rakhai ||
नाराइणि लइआ नाठूंगड़ा पैर किथै रखै ॥
One who has received a kick from the Lord God - where can he place his foot?
ਕਰਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਅਮਿਤਿਆ ਨਿਤ ਵਿਸੋ ਚਖੈ ॥
Karadhaa Paap Amithiaa Nith Viso Chakhai ||
करदा पाप अमितिआ नित विसो चखै ॥
He commits countless sins, and continually eats poison.
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਖੈ ॥
Nindhaa Karadhaa Pach Muaa Vich Dhaehee Bhakhai ||
निंदा करदा पचि मुआ विचि देही भखै ॥
Slandering others, he wastes away and dies; within his body, he burns.
ਸਚੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰਖੈ ॥
Sachai Saahib Maariaa Koun This No Rakhai ||
सचै साहिब मारिआ कउणु तिस नो रखै ॥
One who has been struck down by the True Lord and Master - who can save him now?
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੈ ॥੨੮॥
Naanak This Saranaagathee Jo Purakh Alakhai ||28||
नानक तिसु सरणागती जो पुरखु अलखै ॥२८॥
Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Unseen Lord, the Primal Being. ||28||

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣਾ ਕਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
Narak Ghor Bahu Dhukh Ghanae Akirathaghanaa Kaa Thhaan ||
नरक घोर बहु दुख घणे अकिरतघणा का थानु ॥
In the most horrible hell, there is terrible pain and suffering. It is the place of the ungrateful.
ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਾਮੁ ॥੧॥
Thin Prabh Maarae Naanakaa Hoe Hoe Mueae Haraam ||1||
तिनि प्रभि मारे नानका होइ होइ मुए हरामु ॥१॥
They are struck down by God, O Nanak, and they die a most miserable death. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਅਵਖਧ ਸਭੇ ਕੀਤਿਅਨੁ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
Avakhadhh Sabhae Keethian Nindhak Kaa Dhaaroo Naahi ||
अवखध सभे कीतिअनु निंदक का दारू नाहि ॥
All kinds of medicines may be prepared, but there is no cure for the slanderer.
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
Aap Bhulaaeae Naanakaa Pach Pach Jonee Paahi ||2||
आपि भुलाए नानका पचि पचि जोनी पाहि ॥२॥
Those whom the Lord Himself misleads, O Nanak, putrefy and rot in reincarnation. ||2||

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਤੁਸਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ॥
Thus Dhithaa Poorai Sathiguroo Har Dhhan Sach Akhutt ||
तुसि दिता पूरै सतिगुरू हरि धनु सचु अखुटु ॥
By His Pleasure, the True Guru has blessed me with the inexhaustible wealth of the Name of the True Lord.
ਸਭਿ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਛੁਟੁ ॥
Sabh Andhaesae Mitt Geae Jam Kaa Bho Shhutt ||
सभि अंदेसे मिटि गए जम का भउ छुटु ॥
All my anxiety is ended; I am rid of the fear of death.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੁਟੁ ॥
Kaam Krodhh Buriaaeeaaan Sang Saadhhoo Thutt ||
काम क्रोध बुरिआईआं संगि साधू तुटु ॥
Sexual desire, anger and other evils have been subdued in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਹੁਇ ਮਰਸਨਿ ਬੁਟੁ ॥
Vin Sachae Dhoojaa Saevadhae Hue Marasan Butt ||
विणु सचे दूजा सेवदे हुइ मरसनि बुटु ॥
Those who serve another, instead of the True Lord, die unfulfilled in the end.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਨਾਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਟੁ ॥੨੯॥
Naanak Ko Gur Bakhasiaa Naamai Sang Jutt ||29||
नानक कउ गुरि बखसिआ नामै संगि जुटु ॥२९॥
The Guru has blessed Nanak with forgiveness; he is united with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||29||

सलोक मः ४ ॥
Shalok, Fourth Mehl:
ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਦ੍ਰਹੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਨਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਫਿਰੈ ਜਜਮਾਲਿਆ ॥
Thapaa N Hovai Andhrahu Lobhee Nith Maaeiaa No Firai Jajamaaliaa ||
तपा न होवै अंद्रहु लोभी नित माइआ नो फिरै जजमालिआ ॥
He is not a penitent, who is greedy within his heart, and who constantly chases after Maya like a leper.
ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਸਤੈ ਦੀ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਲਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਣਿ ਤਪੈ ਪੁਤੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
Ago Dhae Sadhiaa Sathai Dhee Bhikhiaa Leae Naahee Pishho Dhae Pashhuthaae Kai Aan Thapai Puth Vich Behaaliaa ||
अगो दे सदिआ सतै दी भिखिआ लए नाही पिछो दे पछुताइ कै आणि तपै पुतु विचि बहालिआ ॥
When this penitent was first invited, he refused our charity; but later he repented and sent his son, who was seated in the congregation.
ਪੰਚ ਲੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਹਸਣ ਲਗੇ ਤਪਾ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥
Panch Log Sabh Hasan Lagae Thapaa Lobh Lehar Hai Gaaliaa ||
पंच लोग सभि हसण लगे तपा लोभि लहरि है गालिआ ॥
The village elders all laughed, saying that the waves of greed have destroyed this penitent.
ਜਿਥੈ ਥੋੜਾ ਧਨੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਿਥੈ ਤਪਾ ਭਿਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਧਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੈ ਡਿਠੈ ਤਪੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
Jithhai Thhorraa Dhhan Vaekhai Thithhai Thapaa Bhittai Naahee Dhhan Bahuthai Ddithai Thapai Dhharam Haariaa ||
जिथै थोड़ा धनु वेखै तिथै तपा भिटै नाही धनि बहुतै डिठै तपै धरमु हारिआ ॥
If he sees only a little wealth, he does not bother to go there; but when he sees a lot of wealth, the penitent forsakes his vows.
ਭਾਈ ਏਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਹੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥
Bhaaee Eaehu Thapaa N Hovee Bagulaa Hai Behi Saadhh Janaa Veechaariaa ||
भाई एहु तपा न होवी बगुला है बहि साध जना वीचारिआ ॥
O Siblings of Destiny, he is not a penitent - he is only a stork. Sitting together, the Holy Congregation has so decided.
ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਤਪਾ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਏਤੁ ਦੋਖੈ ਤਪਾ ਦਯਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
Sath Purakh Kee Thapaa Nindhaa Karai Sansaarai Kee Ousathathee Vich Hovai Eaeth Dhokhai Thapaa Dhay Maariaa ||
सत पुरख की तपा निंदा करै संसारै की उसतती विचि होवै एतु दोखै तपा दयि मारिआ ॥
The penitent slanders the True Primal Being, and sings the praises of the material world. For this sin, he is cursed by the Lord.
ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਾ ਵੇਖੁ ਜਿ ਤਪੇ ਨੋ ਫਲੁ ਲਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਪੇ ਕਾ ਘਾਲਿਆ ॥
Mehaa Purakhaan Kee Nindhaa Kaa Vaekh J Thapae No Fal Lagaa Sabh Gaeiaa Thapae Kaa Ghaaliaa ||
महा पुरखां की निंदा का वेखु जि तपे नो फलु लगा सभु गइआ तपे का घालिआ ॥
Behold the fruit the penitent gathers, for slandering the Great Primal Being; all his labors have gone in vain.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਪੰਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਪਾ ਸਦਾਏ ॥
Baahar Behai Panchaa Vich Thapaa Sadhaaeae ||
बाहरि बहै पंचा विचि तपा सदाए ॥
When he sits outside among the elders, he is called a penitent;
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਪਾ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
Andhar Behai Thapaa Paap Kamaaeae ||
अंदरि बहै तपा पाप कमाए ॥
But when he sits within the congregation, the penitent commits sin.
