इआहू जुगति बिहाने कई जनम ॥
So many lifetimes are wasted in these ways.

तू ठाकुरु तुम पहि अरदासि ॥
You are our Lord and Master; to You, I offer this prayer.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
Jeeo Pindd Sabh Thaeree Raas ||
जीउ पिंडु सभु तेरी रासि ॥
This body and soul are all Your property.
ਤੁਮ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
Thum Maath Pithaa Ham Baarik Thaerae ||
तुम मात पिता हम बारिक तेरे ॥
You are our mother and father; we are Your children.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥

तुमरी क्रिपा महि सूख घनेरे ॥
In Your Grace, there are so many joys!
ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ॥

कोइ न जानै तुमरा अंतु ॥
No one knows Your limits.
ਊਚੇ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥

ऊचे ते ऊचा भगवंत ॥
O Highest of the High, Most Generous God,
ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੂਤ੍ਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
Sagal Samagree Thumarai Soothr Dhhaaree ||
सगल समग्री तुमरै सूत्रि धारी ॥
The whole creation is strung on Your thread.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ॥
Thum Thae Hoe S Aagiaakaaree ||
तुम ते होइ सु आगिआकारी ॥
That which has come from You is under Your Command.
ਤੁਮਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
Thumaree Gath Mith Thum Hee Jaanee ||
तुमरी गति मिति तुम ही जानी ॥
You alone know Your state and extent.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥੮॥੪॥

ਦੇਨਹਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਆਨ ਸੁਆਇ ॥
Dhaenehaar Prabh Shhodd Kai Laagehi Aan Suaae ||
देनहारु प्रभ छोडि कै लागहि आन सुआइ ॥
One who renounces God the Giver, and attaches himself to other affairs
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੂ ਨ ਸੀਝਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक कहू न सीझई बिनु नावै पति जाइ ॥१॥

ਦਸ ਬਸਤੂ ਲੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

दस बसतू ले पाछै पावै ॥
He obtains ten things, and puts them behind him;
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਬਿਖੋਟਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
Eaek Basath Kaaran Bikhott Gavaavai ||
एक बसतु कारनि बिखोटि गवावै ॥
For the sake of one thing withheld, he forfeits his faith.
ਏਕ ਭੀ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਦਸ ਭੀ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
Eaek Bhee N Dhaee Dhas Bhee Hir Laee ||
एक भी न देइ दस भी हिरि लेइ ॥
But what if that one thing were not given, and the ten were taken away?
ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Tho Moorraa Kahu Kehaa Karaee ||
तउ मूड़ा कहु कहा करेइ ॥
Then, what could the fool say or do?
ਜਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
Jis Thaakur Sio Naahee Chaaraa ||
जिसु ठाकुर सिउ नाही चारा ॥
Our Lord and Master cannot be moved by force.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਦ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾ ॥
Thaa Ko Keejai Sadh Namasakaaraa ||
ता कउ कीजै सद नमसकारा ॥
Unto Him, bow forever in adoration.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
Jaa Kai Man Laagaa Prabh Meethaa ||
जा कै मनि लागा प्रभु मीठा ॥
That one, unto whose mind God seems sweet
ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖ ਤਾਹੂ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠਾ ॥
Sarab Sookh Thaahoo Man Voothaa ||
सरब सूख ताहू मनि वूठा ॥
All pleasures come to abide in his mind.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਅਪਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਆ ॥
Jis Jan Apanaa Hukam Manaaeiaa ||
जिसु जन अपना हुकमु मनाइआ ॥
One who abides by the Lord's Will,
ਸਰਬ ਥੋਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
Sarab Thhok Naanak Thin Paaeiaa ||1||
सरब थोक नानक तिनि पाइआ ॥१॥
O Nanak, obtains all things. ||1||
ਅਗਨਤ ਸਾਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
Aganath Saahu Apanee Dhae Raas ||
अगनत साहु अपनी दे रासि ॥
God the Banker gives endless capital to the mortal,
ਖਾਤ ਪੀਤ ਬਰਤੈ ਅਨਦ ਉਲਾਸਿ ॥
Khaath Peeth Barathai Anadh Oulaas ||
खात पीत बरतै अनद उलासि ॥
Who eats, drinks and expends it with pleasure and joy.
ਅਪੁਨੀ ਅਮਾਨ ਕਛੁ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਸਾਹੁ ਲੇਇ ॥
Apunee Amaan Kashh Bahur Saahu Laee ||
अपुनी अमान कछु बहुरि साहु लेइ ॥
If some of this capital is later taken back by the Banker,
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Agiaanee Man Ros Karaee ||
अगिआनी मनि रोसु करेइ ॥
The ignorant person shows his anger.
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
Apanee Paratheeth Aap Hee Khovai ||
अपनी परतीति आप ही खोवै ॥
He himself destroys his own credibility,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
Bahur Ous Kaa Bisvaas N Hovai ||
बहुरि उस का बिस्वासु न होवै ॥
And he shall not again be trusted.
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
Jis Kee Basath This Aagai Raakhai ||
जिस की बसतु तिसु आगै राखै ॥
When one offers to the Lord, that which belongs to the Lord,
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਾਥੈ ॥
Prabh Kee Aagiaa Maanai Maathhai ||
प्रभ की आगिआ मानै माथै ॥
And willingly abides by the Will of God's Order,
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਚਉਗੁਨ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥
Ous Thae Chougun Karai Nihaal ||
उस ते चउगुन करै निहालु ॥
The Lord will make him happy four times over.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥੨॥
Naanak Saahib Sadhaa Dhaeiaal ||2||
नानक साहिबु सदा दइआलु ॥२॥
O Nanak, our Lord and Master is merciful forever. ||2||
ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
Anik Bhaath Maaeiaa Kae Haeth ||
अनिक भाति माइआ के हेत ॥
The many forms of attachment to Maya shall surely pass away -
ਸਰਪਰ ਹੋਵਤ ਜਾਨੁ ਅਨੇਤ ॥
Sarapar Hovath Jaan Anaeth ||
सरपर होवत जानु अनेत ॥
Know that they are transitory.
ਬਿਰਖ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
Birakh Kee Shhaaeiaa Sio Rang Laavai ||
बिरख की छाइआ सिउ रंगु लावै ॥
People fall in love with the shade of the tree,
ਓਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਉਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥
Ouh Binasai Ouhu Man Pashhuthaavai ||
ओह बिनसै उहु मनि पछुतावै ॥
And when it passes away, they feel regret in their minds.
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਾਲਨਹਾਰੁ ॥
Jo Dheesai So Chaalanehaar ||
जो दीसै सो चालनहारु ॥
Whatever is seen, shall pass away;
ਲਪਟਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਤਹ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥
Lapatt Rehiou Theh Andhh Andhhaar ||
लपटि रहिओ तह अंध अंधारु ॥
And yet, the blindest of the blind cling to it.
ਬਟਾਊ ਸਿਉ ਜੋ ਲਾਵੈ ਨੇਹ ॥
Battaaoo Sio Jo Laavai Naeh ||
बटाऊ सिउ जो लावै नेह ॥
One who gives her love to a passing traveler
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕੇਹ ॥
Thaa Ko Haathh N Aavai Kaeh ||
ता कउ हाथि न आवै केह ॥
Nothing shall come into her hands in this way.
ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
Man Har Kae Naam Kee Preeth Sukhadhaaee ||
मन हरि के नाम की प्रीति सुखदाई ॥
O mind, the love of the Name of the Lord bestows peace.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥

करि किरपा नानक आपि लए लाई ॥३॥
O Nanak, the Lord, in His Mercy, unites us with Himself. ||3||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
Mithhiaa Than Dhhan Kuttanb Sabaaeiaa ||
मिथिआ तनु धनु कुट्मबु सबाइआ ॥
False are body, wealth, and all relations.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
Mithhiaa Houmai Mamathaa Maaeiaa ||
मिथिआ हउमै ममता माइआ ॥
False are ego, possessiveness and Maya.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਬਨ ਧਨ ਮਾਲ ॥
Mithhiaa Raaj Joban Dhhan Maal ||
मिथिआ राज जोबन धन माल ॥
False are power, youth, wealth and property.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ॥
Mithhiaa Kaam Krodhh Bikaraal ||
मिथिआ काम क्रोध बिकराल ॥
False are sexual desire and wild anger.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰਥ ਹਸਤੀ ਅਸ੍ਵ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥
Mithhiaa Rathh Hasathee Asv Basathraa ||
मिथिआ रथ हसती अस्व बसत्रा ॥
False are chariots, elephants, horses and expensive clothes.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਪੇਖਿ ਹਸਤਾ ॥
Mithhiaa Rang Sang Maaeiaa Paekh Hasathaa ||
मिथिआ रंग संगि माइआ पेखि हसता ॥
False is the love of gathering wealth, and reveling in the sight of it.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ ਮੋਹ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
Mithhiaa Dhhroh Moh Abhimaan ||
मिथिआ ध्रोह मोह अभिमानु ॥
False are deception, emotional attachment and egotistical pride.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਆਪਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰਤ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
Mithhiaa Aapas Oopar Karath Gumaan ||
मिथिआ आपस ऊपरि करत गुमानु ॥
False are pride and self-conceit.
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਕੀ ਸਰਨ ॥
Asathhir Bhagath Saadhh Kee Saran ||
असथिरु भगति साध की सरन ॥
Only devotional worship is permanent, and the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ॥੪॥
Naanak Jap Jap Jeevai Har Kae Charan ||4||
नानक जपि जपि जीवै हरि के चरन ॥४॥
Nanak lives by meditating, meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Lord. ||4||
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸੁਨਹਿ ॥
Mithhiaa Sravan Par Nindhaa Sunehi ||
मिथिआ स्रवन पर निंदा सुनहि ॥
False are the ears which listen to the slander of others.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਹਸਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਕਉ ਹਿਰਹਿ ॥
Mithhiaa Hasath Par Dharab Ko Hirehi ||
मिथिआ हसत पर दरब कउ हिरहि ॥
False are the hands which steal the wealth of others.
