कहणै वाले तेरे रहे समाइ ॥१॥
Those who describe You, remain absorbed in You. ||1||
ਵਡੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥
Vaddae Maerae Saahibaa Gehir Ganbheeraa Gunee Geheeraa ||
वडे मेरे साहिबा गहिर ग्मभीरा गुणी गहीरा ॥
O my Great Lord and Master of Unfathomable Depth, You are the Ocean of Excellence.
ਕੋਈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਤਾ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਚੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Koee N Jaanai Thaeraa Kaethaa Kaevadd Cheeraa ||1|| Rehaao ||
कोई न जाणै तेरा केता केवडु चीरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
No one knows the greatness of Your expanse. ||1||Pause||
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
Sabh Surathee Mil Surath Kamaaee ||
सभि सुरती मिलि सुरति कमाई ॥
All the contemplators met together and practiced contemplation;
ਸਭ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
Sabh Keemath Mil Keemath Paaee ||
सभ कीमति मिलि कीमति पाई ॥
All the appraisers met together and tried to appraise You.
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਹਾਈ ॥
Giaanee Dhhiaanee Gur Gur Haaee ||
गिआनी धिआनी गुर गुर हाई ॥
The theologians, the meditators and the teachers of teachers
ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
Kehan N Jaaee Thaeree Thil Vaddiaaee ||2||
कहणु न जाई तेरी तिलु वडिआई ॥२॥
Could not express even an iota of Your Greatness. ||2||
ਸਭਿ ਸਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ॥
Sabh Sath Sabh Thap Sabh Changiaaeeaa ||
सभि सत सभि तप सभि चंगिआईआ ॥
All Truth, all austerities, all goodness,
ਸਿਧਾ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ॥
Sidhhaa Purakhaa Keeaa Vaddiaaeeaaan ||
सिधा पुरखा कीआ वडिआईआं ॥
And the greatness of the Siddhas, the beings of perfect spiritual powers
ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥
Thudhh Vin Sidhhee Kinai N Paaeeaa ||
तुधु विणु सिधी किनै न पाईआ ॥
Without You, none has attained such spiritual powers.
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈਆ ॥੩॥
Karam Milai Naahee Thaak Rehaaeeaa ||3||
करमि मिलै नाही ठाकि रहाईआ ॥३॥
They are obtained by Your Grace; their flow cannot be blocked. ||3||
ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥
Aakhan Vaalaa Kiaa Baechaaraa ||
आखण वाला किआ बेचारा ॥
What can the helpless speaker do?
ਸਿਫਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
Sifathee Bharae Thaerae Bhanddaaraa ||
सिफती भरे तेरे भंडारा ॥
Your bounties are overflowing with Your Praises.
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
Jis Thoon Dhaehi Thisai Kiaa Chaaraa ||
जिसु तूं देहि तिसै किआ चारा ॥
And the one, unto whom You give - why should he think of any other?
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

नानक सचु सवारणहारा ॥४॥१॥
O Nanak, the True Lord is the Embellisher. ||4||1||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਆਖਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
Aakhaa Jeevaa Visarai Mar Jaao ||
आखा जीवा विसरै मरि जाउ ॥
Chanting the Name, I live; forgetting it, I die.
ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
Aakhan Aoukhaa Saachaa Naao ||
आखणि अउखा साचा नाउ ॥
It is so difficult to chant the True Name.
ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੂਖ ॥
Saachae Naam Kee Laagai Bhookh ||
साचे नाम की लागै भूख ॥
If someone feels hunger for the True Name,
ਤਿਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥
Thith Bhookhai Khaae Chaleeahi Dhookh ||1||
तितु भूखै खाइ चलीअहि दूख ॥१॥
Then that hunger shall consume his pains. ||1||
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
So Kio Visarai Maeree Maae ||
सो किउ विसरै मेरी माइ ॥
So how could I ever forget Him, O my Mother?
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साचा साहिबु साचै नाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
True is the Master, and True is His Name. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
Saachae Naam Kee Thil Vaddiaaee ||
साचे नाम की तिलु वडिआई ॥
People have grown weary of trying to appraise the greatness of the True Name,
ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
Aakh Thhakae Keemath Nehee Paaee ||
आखि थके कीमति नही पाई ॥
But they have not been able to appraise even an iota of it.
ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
Jae Sabh Mil Kai Aakhan Paahi ||
जे सभि मिलि कै आखण पाहि ॥
Even if they were all to meet together and recount them,
ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
Vaddaa N Hovai Ghaatt N Jaae ||2||
वडा न होवै घाटि न जाइ ॥२॥
You would not be made any greater or lesser. ||2||
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
Naa Ouhu Marai N Hovai Sog ||
ना ओहु मरै न होवै सोगु ॥
He does not die - there is no reason to mourn.
ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
Dhaenadhaa Rehai N Chookai Bhog ||
देंदा रहै न चूकै भोगु ॥
He continues to give, but His Provisions are never exhausted.
ਗੁਣੁ ਏਹੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
Gun Eaeho Hor Naahee Koe ||
गुणु एहो होरु नाही कोइ ॥
This Glorious Virtue is His alone - no one else is like Him;
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
Naa Ko Hoaa Naa Ko Hoe ||3||
ना को होआ ना को होइ ॥३॥
There has never been anyone like Him, and there never shall be. ||3||
ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
Jaevadd Aap Thaevadd Thaeree Dhaath ||
जेवडु आपि तेवड तेरी दाति ॥
As Great as You Yourself are, so Great are Your Gifts.
ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
Jin Dhin Kar Kai Keethee Raath ||
जिनि दिनु करि कै कीती राति ॥
It is You who created day and night as well.
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਮਜਾਤਿ ॥
Khasam Visaarehi Thae Kamajaath ||
खसमु विसारहि ते कमजाति ॥
Those who forget their Lord and Master are vile and despicable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੨॥
Naanak Naavai Baajh Sanaath ||4||2||
नानक नावै बाझु सनाति ॥४॥२॥
O Nanak, without the Name, people are wretched outcasts. ||4||2||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਜੇ ਦਰਿ ਮਾਂਗਤੁ ਕੂਕ ਕਰੇ ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ॥
Jae Dhar Maangath Kook Karae Mehalee Khasam Sunae ||
जे दरि मांगतु कूक करे महली खसमु सुणे ॥
If a beggar cries out at the door, the Master hears it in His Mansion.
ਭਾਵੈ ਧੀਰਕ ਭਾਵੈ ਧਕੇ ਏਕ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥
Bhaavai Dhheerak Bhaavai Dhhakae Eaek Vaddaaee Dhaee ||1||
भावै धीरक भावै धके एक वडाई देइ ॥१॥
Whether He receives him or pushes him away, it is the Gift of the Lord's Greatness. ||1||
ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਜਾਤੀ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Jaanahu Joth N Pooshhahu Jaathee Aagai Jaath N Hae ||1|| Rehaao ||
जाणहु जोति न पूछहु जाती आगै जाति न हे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
Recognize the Lord's Light within all, and do not consider social class or status; there are no classes or castes in the world hereafter. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Aap Karaaeae Aap Karaee ||
आपि कराए आपि करेइ ॥
He Himself acts, and He Himself inspires us to act.
ਆਪਿ ਉਲਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥
Aap Oulaamhae Chith Dhharaee ||
आपि उलाम्हे चिति धरेइ ॥
He Himself considers our complaints.
ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
Jaa Thoon Karanehaar Karathaar ||
जा तूं करणहारु करतारु ॥
Since You, O Creator Lord, are the Doer,
ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੀ ਕਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
Kiaa Muhathaajee Kiaa Sansaar ||2||
किआ मुहताजी किआ संसारु ॥२॥
Why should I submit to the world? ||2||
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ॥
Aap Oupaaeae Aapae Dhaee ||
आपि उपाए आपे देइ ॥
You Yourself created and You Yourself give.
ਆਪੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Aapae Dhuramath Manehi Karaee ||
आपे दुरमति मनहि करेइ ॥
You Yourself eliminate evil-mindedness;
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
Gur Parasaadh Vasai Man Aae ||
गुर परसादि वसै मनि आइ ॥
By Guru's Grace, You come to abide in our minds,
ਦੁਖੁ ਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
Dhukh Anhaeraa Vichahu Jaae ||3||
दुखु अन्हेरा विचहु जाइ ॥३॥
And then, pain and darkness are dispelled from within. ||3||
ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
Saach Piaaraa Aap Karaee ||
साचु पिआरा आपि करेइ ॥
He Himself infuses love for the Truth.
ਅਵਰੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥
Avaree Ko Saach N Dhaee ||
अवरी कउ साचु न देइ ॥
Unto others, the Truth is not bestowed.
ਜੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੇਇ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਗੈ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਲੇਇ ॥੪॥੩॥
Jae Kisai Dhaee Vakhaanai Naanak Aagai Pooshh N Laee ||4||3||
जे किसै देइ वखाणै नानकु आगै पूछ न लेइ ॥४॥३॥
If He bestows it upon someone, says Nanak, then, in the world hereafter, that person is not called to account. ||4||3||

ਤਾਲ ਮਦੀਰੇ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਘਾਟ ॥
Thaal Madheerae Ghatt Kae Ghaatt ||
ताल मदीरे घट के घाट ॥
The urges of the heart are like cymbals and ankle-bells;
ਦੋਲਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਜ ॥
Dholak Dhuneeaa Vaajehi Vaaj ||
दोलक दुनीआ वाजहि वाज ॥
The drum of the world resounds with the beat.
ਨਾਰਦੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
Naaradh Naachai Kal Kaa Bhaao ||
नारदु नाचै कलि का भाउ ॥
Naarad dances to the tune of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;
ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਕਹ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥
Jathee Sathee Keh Raakhehi Paao ||1||
जती सती कह राखहि पाउ ॥१॥
Where can the celibates and the men of truth place their feet? ||1||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥
Naanak Naam Vittahu Kurabaan ||
नानक नाम विटहु कुरबाणु ॥
Nanak is a sacrifice to the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਅੰਧੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Andhhee Dhuneeaa Saahib Jaan ||1|| Rehaao ||
अंधी दुनीआ साहिबु जाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
The world is blind; our Lord and Master is All-seeing. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
Guroo Paasahu Fir Chaelaa Khaae ||
गुरू पासहु फिरि चेला खाइ ॥
The disciple feeds on the Guru;
ਤਾਮਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥
Thaam Pareeth Vasai Ghar Aae ||
तामि परीति वसै घरि आइ ॥
Out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home.
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵਣ ਖਾਣੁ ॥
Jae So Varihaaa Jeevan Khaan ||
जे सउ वर्हिआ जीवण खाणु ॥
If one were to live and eat for hundreds of years,
